Children’s clothes of all shapes, sizes and colours hang on rails along the walls of the second-hand clothes shop in Al-Khiyam. Parents who live in what remains of this part of southern Lebanon are grateful for the hand-me-downs.
A small square hole in the floor, however, betrays a more sinister purpose.
It’s a squeeze, but once you are through it, a tight spiral staircase descends a metal-lined shaft. It opens up at a depth of perhaps 10 to 15 metres into a formidably well-organised Hezbollah tunnel complex, connecting multiple buildings in the village.
Of course they don’t. Who would be such a fool as to think they might?
