Quentin Crisp Was Trans, Activists Claim
28th February 2026
The British gay icon Quentin Crisp was transgender, activists have claimed.
Pro-trans campaigners appear to have edited the author and raconteur’s entry on the website Wikipedia to describe him as a “she” throughout.
It has sparked a row with gender-critical gay rights activists, who have lambasted the online encyclopaedia for allowing history to be “rewritten”.
In a 1977 interview, Crisp, who lived his life as an effeminate gay man, said sex was immutable and that he was not a woman, even though he wished he had been one.
However, just before he died at the age of 90, he said he was a “woman trapped in a man’s body” and accepted he was transgender.
He said he knew he was not “physically a woman” and did not ask to be referred to as “she”.
