Two Syrian brothers are on trial in the Netherlands accused of murdering their teenage sister over her “Western behaviour”.
Mohamed Najjar, 23, and Muhanad Al Najjar, 25, are alleged to have gagged, bound and thrown 18-year-old Ryan Al Najjar in a swamp after discovering she had a boyfriend, which prosecutors claim brought “shame” on the family.
Their father, Khaled, is accused of ordering the “honour killing” and has reportedly fled to Syria.
Ryan’s body was found submerged in a swamp six days after she disappeared from the family home in Joure.
The discovery was made by a passer-by on May 28 in Lelystad, around 25 miles north-east of Amsterdam.DNA belonging to her father was found lodged under Ryan’s fingernails by investigators, suggesting that she had fought back before she was killed.
Her father is set to be tried in absentia.
Muslims seem to have this difficulty with assimilation.
