Re: “When I was at the article I linked in the above post, I saw a link to an article about a Trump-menacing interview with Colombia’s president.”
It is probably not an exaggeration to state that the narcoterroristas wield more power in that South American nation than its president. Indeed, the holder of that office may have been speaking as a cutout or surrogate for those groups when the statement in question was made. The men holding his puppet-strings not wishing to show themselves in the light of day. So, this shocking statement – and in most times it would qualify as shocking – is perhaps not as shocking as might be expected. The U.S. President is threatening a very profitable and powerful status quo. First in Mexico, then in Venezuela, and now Colombia – all three nations are or have been deeply involved in narcotics trafficking through criminal organizations which rival or even surpass the government in power.
That these organizations are fourth-generation entities makes them that much more threatening.

A very good point. At this point, drug cartels are no longer just commercial enterprises that happen to be engaged in criminal activities, but subcultures, much like La Cosa Nostra–it is significant that the common internal term for a Mafia family is “borgata”, which formally means “village”. Such entities have a natural advantage over a government in the same way that a smaller business has an advantage over a giant corporation–they can move faster to create and implement policies, and that can be very dangerous to the larger entity. If a competitor of Apple decided to snuff Tim Cook and all of his direct reports, what effect would that have on Apple’s operations? Trump is in the same position. Take him out, and “Trumpism” might not “fall apart”, but it would be in serious disarray for a considerable period of time. The people who realize this are the people most to be worried about, as the various assassination plots make clear.
