The deteriorating relationship between Britain and China in the years after David Cameron’s “golden era” of close economic relations did not stop Beijing from pouring billions of pounds into the UK to secure its place in the country’s critical national infrastructure.
From nuclear power plants to transport infrastructure, Chinese companies have been able to buy stakes in crucial projects, despite the potential security risks.
Britain is the third largest recipient of Chinese investment over the past two decades, behind the US and Australia, according to figures from the American Enterprise Institute.
