Young Graduates ‘Must Not Be Paid Less Than Welfare Claimants’
18th September 2025
Ministers have been urged not to give up on welfare reform and end a system where a new graduate can take home less than someone on sickness benefits.
Pat McFadden, the work and pensions secretary, has said that he wants to focus on helping young people find work and is expected to make a push for better employment support his early priority after taking over the job this month.
A backbench revolt forced Sir Keir Starmer to retreat on an attempt to cut £5 billion from disability benefits, and McFadden said this week that there would be no further action to reform personal independence payments (Pip) for another year.
Ponder a world in which such a headline reflects reality.
