Nick Norwitz discusses a problem with modern scientific discussions that has implications for modern political discussions.
Most scientific studies these days deal with correlation, and the studies themselves acknowledge this by using terms such as ‘linked to’ rather than ’causes’, which would be an overreach. Dimwit journalists, many of whom ought to know better, jump right in and claim “X causes Y” and then head off into the stratosphere in laying down “things we must do to prevent Y”.
Dimwit journalists even cut out the middleman and go from “X is linked to Y” to “Therefore in order to prevent Bad Thing Y we must ban X, which is insane.
Look at the news and you can find all of the evidence of this that you might desire.
