For anyone who’s curious, America has defaulted several times in her history. In fact, twice within the lives of a few people still living:
In 1933 the US reneged on gold at $20/oz., arbitrarily devluing the dollar to $35/oz of gold.
In 1971 Nixon gave up the whole charade and unlinked the dollar from gold at any price.
There were earlier revaluations and some suspensions too.
