We have seen the future, and it sucks.

Say Goodbye to Swing Districts. Lawmakers Are Drawing Easy Wins in Dozens of States.

20th November 2021

Politico is upset.

The only people who benefit from ‘swing districts’ are the Narrative Media, who need the political ‘horse race’ in other to garner the attention that is the cornerstone of their business model.

An elected representative doesn’t (popular mythology to the contrary notwithstanding) everybody in that district; he (or she) (or it) only ‘represents’ the people who voted for that representative. (Mouths make noises but we all know the truth.) So the more people vote for a winning candidate, the greater the portion of the electorate is actually ‘represented’ by that candidate.

It is therefore obvious that so-called ‘gerrymandering’ promotes effective democracy, rather than being the moral failing that the Chattering Class would have you believe. Ideally, districts ought to be arranged so that the winning candidate gets as close to 100% as possible. That’s actual democracy in action.

So the next time an outlet like Politico complains about ‘gerrymandering’, know that they are consulting their wallets rather than some abstract principle of good-government.
