The Western View of Taiwan’s Defense

26th February 2026

Real Clear Defense.

As the Taiwanese legislature continues to debate the merits of a major defense spending bill by the Democratic Progressive Party (DDP). Taiwan must be aware that it risks being viewed by the West as an ally with a credible chance of being rapidly overwhelmed. As an alternative to the DDP’s proposed legislation, the Taiwan People’s Party (TPP) introduced a bill which capped defence spending at NT$400 billion (12.6 billion USD) instead of NT$1.25 trillion (39.74 billion USD), while also omitting the provisions of the larger bill which called for the procurement of drone platforms, a larger integrated air defense system (IADS) know as the T-Dome, spare parts for attack helicopters, and more. Such a lack of preparation would reduce the opportunities allies have to come to its defense, especially if Taiwan seems politically weak, and the military balance of power appears too lop-sided in favor of China.

‘People’s Party’ tells you all you need to know about what they stand for.

The Hydrogen Truck Problem Isn’t the Truck

26th February 2026

Read it.

This post is about “real” hydrogen. Produced externally, at scale, using dedicated energy sources. Stored on the vehicle in high-pressure or cryogenic tanks. Consumed in a fuel cell that produces electricity to drive the wheels. No exhaust but water vapour.

This technology works. Hyundai has 165 XCIENT fuel cell trucks running commercially across Switzerland, Germany, France, the Netherlands and Austria, with another 63 in North America. The European fleet hit 20 million kilometres in January 2026. They haul food, beverages, textiles, and construction materials. They refuel in 10-20 minutes. They carry meaningful payloads over real distances.

None of them operate in the UK. That fact alone tells you something about where the problem lies.

The truck is not the problem. The problem is everything around it.

The Dingo’s Fate

26th February 2026

Read it.

The convoluted story of how a species of dog first arrived in Australia and subsequently took over the Outback challenges fundamental notions about what it means to be “native.”

Indeed, the claim has been made that the dingo, whatever its origins, is now a fully wild animal, enmeshed in its ecosystem — and it cannot, therefore, be equated with domestic livestock or be condemned as a mere escaped dog. So the argument goes. This, however, is exactly the difficulty: The status “feral” almost by definition means it cannot be outgrown. Wildness and domesticity constitute a sharp, ontological binary, and the state of “feral-ness” is a catch-all label for any member of the latter group caught attempting to escape — quite hopelessly — the original sin of human companionship. The Midas touch of our species, whose brush invariably transmutes nature into artifice, can take lineages out of the wild, but it cannot put them back. Once a domestic, always a domestic. There is no requiem for the stray dog.

Every time I see a dingo I think “Carolina Yellow Dog”.

Coincidence? I think not….

What Made America Great in the Gilded Age

26th February 2026

Read it.

“We were at our richest from 1870 to 1913. That’s when we were a tariff country,” said President Donald Trump recently, and he’s not wrong. But tariffs aren’t the whole story. The genius of the Gilded Age was interstate regulatory and tax competition.

That economy boomed. From 1870 to 1913, America’s gross domestic product grew at nearly 5% per year. Even though America’s population nearly tripled during that time, with 30 million immigrants, per capita GDP doubled. Steel production boomed, surpassing Britain, France, and Germany combined. Railway miles quadrupled. A period that began amid the ruins of civil war ended with America in first place among the world’s great economic powers.

Washington collected lots of tariffs then, but little else. Before the 16th Amendment paved the way for federal income taxes in 1913, Congress was spending barely 1% of GDP—compared with nearly 25% today. Meanwhile, the federal power to regulate commerce was limited to transactions that actually crossed state lines, leaving the vast majority of regulation to the states.

The year 1913 was the year America went to shit: 16th Amendment (income tax), 17th Amendment (direct popular election of Senators, turning a republic into a democracy), Woodrow Wilson (fascism comes to America), the Federal Reserve (government gets to pee in the soup by printing money whenever it wants to).

Then 1919 put the last nails in the coffin: 18th Amendment (prohibition, giving us the Mafia), 19th Amendment (votes for women, giving us emotion-driven politics), and the Treaty of Versailles (giving us Hitler and eventually World War II).

Music and the Decline of Civilization

26th February 2026

Read it.

In almost every description of a declining civilization we find the same tropes: an excess of liberty, a confusion of social norms, and the weakening of authority that soon descends into lawlessness. The medieval Muslim sociologist Ibn Khaldun, who developed one of the first theories of anacyclosis—the rise and fall of political regimes—explained this phenomenon as the loss of ¢a?abiyyah (group consciousness or social unity). Exactly what it is that undermines cohesion in the first place, however, has been the subject of almost mythic speculation. Some accounts attribute it to the presence of foreign cultures and the “confusion of tongues”; others to the spread of witchcraft or deviant spiritual forces that cast doubt over religious and natural laws. A popular anthropological theory, proposed by J. D. Unwin, is that social breakdown begins with an increase in prosperity and the weakening of sexual restraint.

Hmmm. Sounds familiar…,.

But another theory, perhaps overshadowed by these, once exerted a powerful influence over the premodern world: that the decline of a civilization can begin in the decline of its music. Indeed, unhealthy societies are often described as “discordant” in figurative terms. But in ancient civilizations—especially classical Greece and China—the relationship between musical and social harmony was much more than a metaphor. It was believed that exposure to disorderly music could lead directly to the collapse of the political order. This degeneration, Plato warned in his dialogue the Laws,3 occurs when the taste for sensational music creates a “theatrocracy”: a society ruled by the irrational whims of the audience rather than any objective standard of the good.

“Take but degree away, untune that string / And hark what discord follows!” —Ulysses, Troilus and Cressida, Act 1 Scene 3.

The idea of theatrocracy, or “rule by the audience,” finds itself curiously relevant to nations in the modern West that are no longer, at least in the classical sense, strictly democracies. In a genuine democracy, there may be a diversity of individuals and communities—being, as Plato described it, “a coat of many colours”4—but the state must be unified by a shared consensus about virtue and justice. It follows that democracy requires the participation of rational, autonomous citizens who will always act in the interests of the common good. With the rise of individualism and a thinning definition of “citizenship,” this has ceased to be the case. Especially in an age of technology—when algorithms prey on our most irrational whims and political opinion is swayed by emotional reaction—the conditions that make for rational citizenship, and thus for genuine democracy, have been compromised. What we have instead may turn out to be much closer to the quasi-anarchic theatrocracy that Plato warned against in the Laws.

Ain’t that the truth.

One might even say that our society started turning to shit when our music started turning to shit.

Most people these days would count ‘classic rock’ (the kind of music that was popular when I was a young man) as still being popular today—a time span of about fifty years.

None of my contemporaries when I was a young man gave a shit what was popular in music half a century before.

Music went from ‘big band’ to ‘doo-wop’ to ‘rock & roll’ in the span of about ten years; rock & roll still dominates among the general population, however much ‘rap’ and ‘hip-hop’ attempt to displace it. (Try to find ‘rap’ or ‘hip-hop’ that is as musically compex and harmonious as the Beatles, CSN/Y, the Moody Blues, or even Styx or Kansas. Can’t be done.)

About the only thing that has remained constant is the American Bandstand Criterion: “It’s got a good beat and you can dance to it.”

But all of this changed, so goes the dialogue, with the arrival of a certain kind of poet. Much confusion surrounds Plato’s criticism of poetry, which the philosopher and novelist Iris Murdoch attempts to resolve.7 Murdoch explains that Plato did not, contrary to a common misconception, condemn genuine poets: men of technical skill who received divine inspiration from the Muses. He did, however, condemn another kind of poet who had “native genius”8 but abused his talent to subvert order and harmony—much like a sophist who abused language to distort the truth. Such were the poets who took to the Attican stage, and thanks to them, “an unmusical licence set in.”

Two words: Maya Angelou. ‘Nuff said.

Mathematicians Uncover the Logic Behind How People Walk in Crowds

26th February 2026

MIT News.

Next time you cross a crowded plaza, crosswalk, or airport concourse, take note of the pedestrian flow. Are people walking in orderly lanes, single-file, to their respective destinations? Or is it a haphazard tangle of personal trajectories, as people dodge and weave through the crowd?

MIT instructor Karol Bacik and his colleagues studied the flow of human crowds and developed a first-of-its-kind way to predict when pedestrian paths will transition from orderly to entangled. Their findings may help inform the design of public spaces that promote safe and efficient thoroughfares.

Linguists Tested 191 Universal Grammar Rules. Only One-Third Survived

26th February 2026

SciTechDaily.

Although the world’s languages differ enormously in sound systems, vocabulary, and structure, researchers have long observed that certain grammatical patterns appear repeatedly across cultures. A new study finds that many of these recurring features may be more than a coincidence.

After applying advanced evolutionary modeling techniques, the researchers report that about one-third of the long-proposed “linguistic universals”—patterns believed to exist across all languages—show clear statistical support.

The international research team, led by Annemarie Verkerk (Saarland University) and Russell D. Gray (Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology), analyzed data from Grambank, the most extensive global database of grammatical features. They tested 191 proposed universals across more than 1,700 languages, making this one of the broadest examinations of cross-linguistic structure to date.

Heat Pumps: Efficient on Paper, Complicated in Reality

26th February 2026

Read it.

Heat pumps are having a moment. Governments promote them, utilities love them, and they are, now more often than ever, described as an obvious replacement for fossil fuels (oil, coal, gas), fueled heating. The basic idea sounds great…a heat pump works like a reverse refrigerator. Instead of “pushing heat out, it pulls heat in”. That heat can come from the air outside your house or from the ground below it.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) sums up the enthusiasm nicely. “Heat pumps, powered by low?emissions electricity, are the central technology in the global transition to secure and sustainable heating. Heat pumps currently available on the market are three?to?five times more energy efficient than natural gas boilers. That statement contains three big claims:

(1) heat pumps are three to five times more efficient,

(2) they run on “low-emission” electricity, and

(3) they are secure and sustainable

All three deserve a closer look, so here we go…

Elon, Pete, and the Drone Wars

26th February 2026

Richard Vigilante.

71 days.

That’s how long it took Venom, a powerful, new, U.S. autonomous strike aircraft (aka a drone) to move from concept to flying prototype.

71 days. In traditional aerospace terms, that is almost indecent.

For decades, the path from concept to first flight has stretched across years. Requirements proliferated with each committee’s two cents. Design reviews accumulated. Tooling lead times expanded. Certification protocols hardened. Oversight layered on top. The system evolved to prevent embarrassment, not accelerate learning.

All that is going away. Elon Musk and Pete Hegseth are driving a radical improvement in how the U.S. military develops and acquires weapons, which, in turn, will radically change U.S. war fighting doctrine and ultimately transform U.S. manufacturing.

Russia Sends Migrants Into Europe Through Secret Tunnels

26th February 2026

The Telegraph (UK).

Russia is sending migrants through underground tunnels from Belarus into Europe as part of its hybrid war on the West.

Belarus, a Russian puppet state led by dictator Alexander Lukashenko, has used specialists from the Middle East with “a high level of expertise” to design the tunnels, Polish officials have told The Telegraph.

The Great Escape-style tactic marks a new escalation in the Kremlin’s hybrid war on Europe, in which Minsk has tried to send tens of thousands of migrants across Poland’s eastern frontier.

NHS Waste Is ‘Moral and Economic Disaster’ for Britain

26th February 2026

The Telegraph (UK)

Britain is facing “a social, moral and economic disaster” because billions of pounds are being wasted by the NHS, a former health minister has warned.

Lord Bethell said a doubling in NHS spending in the past 17 years had had “no impact” on the nation’s health, with outcomes getting worse for many and life expectancy flatlining.

The Conservative peer made the comments during a joint interview with Prof Sir Jonathan Van-Tam, a former deputy chief medical officer (CMO), who said the health service was failing to address a “demographic timebomb”.

This is what happens with all government programs—witness the same result in America of throwing more money at public education. Government programs are a money sink in which any increase in funding creates a matching increase in waste, fraud, and abuse.

Green Party Targets Gorton & Denton Voters With Leaflets in Urdu

26th February 2026

The Times (UK).

Parked outside Longsight Market, a big-screen-topped van shows scenes of humanitarian aid being delivered to Gaza. Trestle tables filled with badges and pamphlets on ending “British support for Zionism” crowd the pavements.

This is one of the most ethnically diverse parts of Manchester. According to census data, more than half of Longsight residents are Muslim. It holds the city’s lowest percentage of white residents — 23 per cent — and the highest number of residents who do not speak English — some 371 people.

To target these voters, who form part of the Gorton & Denton constituency heading to the polls on Thursday, the Green Party has been producing material in languages including Urdu and Bengali, which calls on residents to “punish” Labour over Gaza.

Britain under Labour is what Democrats are attempting to create in America.

F-16s Arrive To Protect Diego Garcia, F-22s Forward Deploy To Israel

26th February 2026

The War Zone.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio updated U.S. legislators on Iran just hours before President Donald Trump issued warnings over Tehran’s nuclear ambitions in his State of the Union address. In the past days, U.S. military forces in the region have grown to the highest levels seen since the lead-up to the invasion of Iraq in 2003. New assets that have arrived include U.S. Air Force F-22 Raptors, reportedly in Israel, while F-16s have been deployed to Diego Garcia to protect the Indian Ocean outpost against potential Iranian attacks.

Rubio provided a rare intelligence briefing for congressional leaders — the so-called “gang of eight” — which includes the senior lawmakers from both parties in the House and Senate, as well as the chairs and ranking members of the House and Senate intelligence committees. The contents of the briefing are classified, but it underscores the wider preparations for potential significant military action against Iran.

‘It’s a Disgrace’: Vance Reveals Playbook for Combatting Fraud in United States

25th February 2026

Vice President JD Vance announced he is withholding Medicaid reimbursements from Minnesota while the administration investigates fraud in the state.

When asked by The Daily Signal if this plan should be viewed as a playbook for fighting fraud in the rest of the country, Vance said, “I think you can, certainly.”

“There are certain things that we’re doing in Minneapolis and Minnesota that I’m not gonna be able to do in other parts of the country, because the fraud is gonna be different in each place,” he said. “But yeah, I get this basic model of saying to people, ‘Hey, you get a massive amount of money to provide a service to people.’ Did you actually provide that service?”

Soros-Backed Prosecutor Approves Unusually High Number of Insanity Pleas in Murder Cases

25th February 2026

The Foundry.

Last week, a man who allegedly shot the founder of a charity 10 times while he lay in bed with his wife got off without a prison sentence—because the prosecutor, backed by groups funded by Hungarian-American billionaire George Soros, agreed to let him plead not guilty by reason of insanity.

Gret Glyer had founded DonorSee, a charity platform that allowed donors to support specific people while giving video updates to show the donor’s concrete impact. Joshua Danehower, 37, who had gone on one date with Glyer’s wife Heather about 10 years previously, allegedly broke into the family’s house, snuck into the bedroom, and fired 10 shots into Gret Glyer, leaving his wife a widow and his two young children fatherless.

Due to the plea agreement, however, Danehower will move from a jail cell to a mental health facility. After a year, he will receive a psychological evaluation and may then gain his freedom.

Swedish TV Censured for Saying “Illegal Migrants”

Sweden’s state broadcaster SVT has been ruled against—twice—for referring to illegal migrants as “illegal migrants” during a news report.

The decision came from the country’s media watchdog, Granskningsnämnden, after two viewers complained about the wording used in a segment on SVT’s flagship programme Rapport last September.

The report covered protests in Britain against immigration. Viewers were told that “right-wing extremist groups” were behind the demonstrations before interviews were aired with participants.

Berlin: Nearly 40% of Police Applicants Fail Basic German Test

25th February 2026

Read it.

Recent internal data from the Berlin police department for 2024 and 2025 reveals a significant challenge in recruitment: a large portion of prospective officers are struggling to meet basic linguistic standards. According to official figures, 4,271 out of 10,874 candidates failed the mandatory German language examination, marking a total failure rate of 39.3%.

Interestingly, higher academic qualifications do not guarantee success. Even among those with high school diplomas or university degrees, 30.1% failed to pass the test. This trend has created a ripple effect in personnel planning, leaving approximately 25% of the 1,224 planned training positions unfilled last year. The department maintains that language proficiency is non-negotiable, as “written reports, protocols, and effective communication with citizens” are essential core competencies for daily police work.

The selection process utilizes a 200-word computer-based dictation exercise where candidates must accurately transcribe text read with pauses. Under current internal guidelines, anyone making more than 14 errors fails the assessment. Despite the availability of online practice materials, the need for linguistic support remains high even for those who pass; many trainees require supplemental German instruction during their first three semesters.

The federal government refuses to offer preparatory courses before the application phase. State Secretary of the Interior Christian Hochgrebe emphasizes the need for individual accountability, stating: “Applicants are expected to prepare for the selection process independently, as they are entering a profession characterized by a high degree of personal motivation.”

Why Subsidized Housing Costs So Much

25th February 2026

The Antiplanner.

Oregon Housing and Community Services, the agency that hands out state and federal subsidized housing grants, is biased toward developers who support the agency’s ideology regarding social services, a former affordable housing developer emailed to me. Responding to my recent posts about Portland’s affordable housing projects, this developer notes that “the most expensive project I ever built [was] 50 units of two story garden apartments” that averaged 1,000-square-feet in size and cost just “$88 per square foot.”

That was in 2008. As I reported in my previous post, costs in the Portland area are now averaging nearly $700 per square foot. “How is it that very profitable development went from under $100/SF in rural towns to over $600/SF in big cities in less than two decades?” this developer asks rhetorically.

Dems Sit in Protest After Trump Demands Americans Be Placed Over Illegal Aliens

25th February 2026

Read it.

The House chamber broke out in U.S.A. chants after President Donald Trump called on all elected officials to place American citizens over illegal immigrants during his State of the Union address, but the cheers were from only one side of the aisle: that of the Republicans.

“One of the great things about the SOTU is how it gives a chance to see what their representatives want them to believe,” Trump said. “So tonight, I’m inviting every legislature to join with my administration in reaffirming a fundamental principle.

“If you agree with this statement, please stand up,” Trump added. “The first duty of the American government is to protect American citizens and not illegal aliens.”

Despite the chants and cheers from Republicans, Democrats did not stand.

Multiple congressional Democrats refused to stand for the U.S. men’s hockey team, who just won the gold medal in the 2026 Winter Olympics, at President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address.

Trump welcomed the team to the first State of the Union address of his second term on Tuesday evening. Most of the other attendees gave the team a standing ovation.

“That’s the first time I’ve ever seen them get up, and actually not all of them did get up,” Trump noted of the Democrats in attendance.

Border Patrol Union Blames Biden Admin for Cartel’s Possession of ‘Military-Grade Weapons’

25th February 2026

The National Border Patrol Council is blaming the Biden administration for a Mexican criminal cartel obtaining “military-grade weapons.”

“For the entire [four] years of the Biden administration’s destructive term, his team allowed unfettered access and ceded complete control of our border to the Mexican cartels, so it’s no surprise to anyone that the cartels were able to obtain the military-grade weapons [and] equipment that they currently possess,” the National Border Patrol Council, the official union of the U.S. Border Patrol, wrote on X.

Mexican authorities discovered and seized rifles with grenade launchers, rocket launchers, and mortar shells during a raid Sunday that left a top cartel leader dead, Reuters reports.

According to Reuters, Iran is in advanced negotiations with Beijing to purchase Chinese-made CM-302 anti-ship cruise missiles – which are supersonic weapons (projectiles which go faster than the speed of sound) designed to skim low over the water and evade naval defenses.

Are Transfers Replacing Work For America’ Poor?

25th February 2026

Read it.

President John F. Kennedy once said, “We must find ways of returning far more of our dependent people to independence.”

President Lyndon B. Johnson sought to meet that challenge by launching the War on Poverty in 1964, insisting that its purpose was not to make people “dependent on the generosity of others,” nor merely to “relieve the symptom of poverty,” but to “cure it and, above all, to prevent it.”

Sixty years and some $20 trillion in welfare spending later, that message appears to have gotten lost. Rather than helping the poor climb out of poverty toward self-reliance, government handouts have instead pulled the ladder away by supplanting work as their primary source of income.

Where Did It All Go Wrong?

24th February 2026

Navy Matters.

Clearly, today’s Navy is badly broken in almost every respect but that wasn’t always the case. In WWII, the Navy was an efficient, deadly, fighting force that knew how to produce warriors and ships on a routine basis. What changed between then and now? Where did it all go wrong?

Let’s start with the “what changed”.

From the early 1900’s (pre-WWI) on, the Navy had an intense focus on combat effectiveness (with a few notable exceptions such as the WWII faulty torpedo fiasco). After the late 1950’s and early 1960’s, the war veterans (those who understood combat and designed ships to meet that requirement) retired leaving people whose focus shifted from combat to career. The focus became empire building, budget pursuit, and career enhancement rather than combat-effective ship and fleet design and procurement. Without the crucible and filter of combat to weed out the incompetent, idiots who were politically adroit took over and foolish policies became the norm.

“The Perversion of Aid”: How the EU’s NGO Funding Model Fuels Political Activism

24th February 2026

Read it.

“What we are looking at today is the perversion of aid: the use of aid money to attain political objectives which cannot be obtained openly by other means,” declared John O’Sullivan, president of the Danube Institute that hosted the conference “The Politicization of Aid,” held in Budapest on Tuesday, February 24th.

The speakers of the event elaborated on the central topic of the conference: how foreign aid has shifted from traditional humanitarian relief to supporting activist networks and the promotion of progressive causes. According to many of the speakers, aid has long been shaped by political and ideological interests, but in recent decades it has taken on a more explicitly political character.

Although this “perversion” has been apparent for quite a while, with the closing down of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) under the new U.S. president Donald Trump in 2025, public awareness of this transformation has accelerated.

How Many Times Have Democrats Disrupted a Trump State of the Union Address?

24th February 2026

Read it.

As Americans tune in to President Donald Trump’s fourth official State of the Union address Tuesday, they may expect Democrats to make a scene of one sort or another.

Twelve Democrats have announced they will boycott the speech and instead attend the “People’s State of the Union,” an event organized by the leftist group MoveOn.org.

About 60 Democrats boycotted Trump’s first inauguration in 2017, and Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., boycotted his address to a joint session of Congress that year (Trump’s speeches in 2017 and 2025 did not count as official State of the Union addresses).

Eleven Democrats said they would boycott the State of the Union in 2018, and others boycotted the 2020 speech (including Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and Al Green, D-Texas).

Many Democrats, however, stayed and disrupted the speeches—as many likely will on Tuesday.

Voter ID Requirements Across the Globe Shatter Democrat Narratives

24th February 2026

The Foundry.

Senate Democrat leader Chuck Schumer of New York relentlessly smears the GOP-sponsored SAVE Act as “Jim Crow 2.0.” This bill requires that citizens show a photo ID to vote in federal elections. Schumer mendaciously decries this as the Republicans’ freshest flavor of hate, aimed chiefly at blacks.

The GOP, Schumer insinuates, stole this idea from Bull Connor, George Wallace, and the other Southern Democrats who brutally enforced Jim Crow 1.0.

“Well, we find it racist,” Rep. Yvette Clarke, D-N.Y., told Lindell TV. She recalled Jim Crow 1.0 poll tests that suppressed black votes “because we didn’t know how many bubbles were in a soap bar.”

Sen. Alex Padilla, D-Calif., called the SAVE Act a “show-me-your-papers law,” thus heating the rhetoric to full boil atop a “Republicans are Nazis” burner.

But if photo ID is a GOP plot to disenfranchise blacks, why is it so common worldwide?

The Media Lie About Trans Shooters

24th February 2026

Read it.

We just saw another tragic shooting in Rhode Island, this time at a high school hockey game. What people want to know in the immediate aftermath of such tragedies is who did it, where, and why—and how many people were injured or died. We instinctively want to know how close it was to us, if it could have happened to us, and if we could avoid a similar fate.

Flying in the face of this human need for truth is the woke legacy media, which puts ideology ahead of facts.

The Daily Mail, a British paper, reported early on that the Pawtucket perpetrator was a trans-identifying man in his 50s, the chief victims his wife and children, and the motive was likely connected with his gender identification and family conflict about it. Their photos supported this.

U.S. legacy media, meanwhile, tried to avoid the above facts. Their reason? The woke dogma the media adhere to is that “trans” people are an oppressed minority and always victims. Thus, the growing instances of mass shootings from people suffering from gender-related mental troubles must be given as little coverage and detail as possible.
