Sex Differences in the Brain and the Mind

Sex differences in many aspects of behavior and cognition are now well-established. These include women’s more communal (formation of intimate relationships) and men’s more agentic (goal achievement) approach to life, as well as men’s advantage in spatial abilities and women’s advantage in memory for personal experiences (episodic memory). Current debates focus on their origin and range from evolved biases to adherence to socially imposed gender roles.

Sex differences in brain organization and functions are the last frontier in this line of research, and their study is shaping up to be a ruckus. The results will eventually resolve the issue of the relative contributions of biological and cultural influences on sex differences. The associated scientific and social policy stakes are high and far-reaching. Minimal sex differences in brain organization and functions would help to affirm the importance of socially imposed gender roles and support the use of policy interventions to reduce sex differences in important social outcomes. Substantive biological contributions, on the other hand, would raise consequential questions about the wisdom of such interventions.

What If Baldness Isn’t Permanent After All? Scientists Found What Actually Stops Hair from Growing—And How to Restart It

Hair follicles go through repeated cycles of growth, rest, and shedding. At the heart of these cycles are hair follicle stem cells (HFSCs), which are responsible for producing new hair after the old ones fall out. In the new study, scientists discovered that these stem cells require a protein known as MCL-1 to function properly. When MCL-1 was deleted in mice, HFSCs quickly underwent stress and died. Without the stem cells, the process of hair regrowth halted completely.

In experiments where MCL-1 was removed from adult mice, researchers also shaved small patches of fur to test recovery. They found that in the absence of MCL-1, the shaved patches did not regrow any hair. In contrast, mice with normal MCL-1 expression experienced routine regeneration. This points to the protein’s essential role in maintaining healthy HFSC populations in adults.

Viewing Life Through a Peephole

Many people have made admirable efforts to characterize and understand the irrational, hysterical and bizarre behavior of people on the Left. Still, trying to understand the reasons they perceive life as they do is challenging. The other day, however, I had an insight that might, at least in part, explain how the Left sees the world, and why their view is so limited and selective. First, let’s look at typical descriptions of the Left by the Right. The Left is usually described as an elitist, utopian-thinking, Marxist group. All of those attributes, I believe, are true. Missing from the description are the reasons why these beliefs are so easy to maintain, in view of real-life events:

The Left views life through a peephole.

You know, the tiny hole that is built into hotel room doors. (Let’s ignore for the moment that some of those peepholes have been tampered with.)

What does it mean to see life through a peephole like the view of a visitor to a room?

First, the view is extremely limited and permanent; a person from the outside can’t make adjustments to get a more complete and undistorted view.

Second, the view through the peephole allows the viewer to assume that the story that the view presents is true and legitimate; after all, it’s the only view available in this setting.

Third, the peephole doesn’t allow for any adjustments, such as binoculars or a telescope provide; a person can only see what is right in front of him or her and the view may be distorted.

So, how would the “view through the peephole” create a reality for a person of the Left? We can take three current scenarios and overlay them on the criteria listed above.

“It is this fear that the people within the party, within the primary system will have about voting for a woman, because every time we voted for a woman we’ve lost so far. And I think that that’s a natural fear, because we just want to win,” said Crockett on SiriusXM’s “Urban View.”

Apparently Democrats have learnd that crazy racist black women aren’t electable. Who knew?

Islamist Youths Storm Church, Threaten Priest in Avignon

A Catholic priest in southern France was surrounded, insulted, and threatened by a mob of young men shouting “Allahu Akbar” after evening Mass on Saturday, in what he has condemned as a brazen act of anti-Christian intimidation.

The attack took place on the evening of Saturday, May 10th, in Montfavet, near Avignon in Provence. The priest was ambushed. Early in the evening, after celebrating Mass, he was approached by a young man who told him of his desire to convert to Christianity. Behind him stood around ten teenagers or young adults, asking if they could enter the church. “Some claimed to be Muslims and said they just wanted to visit,” said the victim, Father Laurent Milan.

Once inside the building, the young men, some of whom were likely minors, showered the priest with insults and shouted “Allah Akhbar,” before threatening to set fire to his church and then fleeing. The local press (La Provence) reported that there were around ten young men aged between 15 and 20. Valeurs actuelles noted that some of them were hooded.

The victim filed a complaint, and the next day, police were deployed to secure the Sunday Mass.

Imagine how peaceful the world would be if the Religion of Peace didn’t exist.

Justices to Weigh Birthright Citizenship-Related Injunctions, But Won’t Consider Underlying Issue

The Supreme Court will hear oral arguments Thursday in a case that stems from President Donald Trump’s order on birthright citizenship. But the court won’t be ruling on the constitutionality of Trump’s executive order, but rather on the issue of nationwide injunctions.

“This case is not about the underlying merits,” GianCarlo Canaparo, a Heritage Foundation senior legal fellow, said on a call with reporters last week, adding that the acting U.S. solicitor general was very strategic in asking the Supreme Court to look at the nationwide injunctions issue, instead of the merits of the broader case.

On his first day in office, Trump signed an executive order limiting the interpretation of birthright citizenship.

Historically, the 14th Amendment, which reads, “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside,” has been interpreted to mean anyone born within the borders of the U.S. is a citizen. But Trump’s executive order focuses on the phrase “subject to the jurisdiction thereof,” and holds that those born to parents who are not in the U.S. legally are not subject to U.S. jurisdiction and are therefore not legal citizens.

Almost immediately after Trump signed the order, lawsuits were filed to block it. Three courts have now issued nationwide injunctions on the order, meaning the courts ruled that not only can the order not be enforced against the parties who brought the lawsuit, nor against anyone else in the nation.

For years, there has been debate among legal experts as to whether nationwide injunctions are lawful or not, and now the Supreme Court has the opportunity to provide a definitive answer.

Mark Halperin reports on what is likely the real reason behind Joe Biden’s return to the public spotlight in recent days, which some have suggested is an attempt to “fight back” against damning revelations about his cognitive decline. “Biden, Inc., needs a source of revenue,” he said, citing a source familiar with the Biden family. “The trough is empty, the spigot has shut down. They need a way to get back in the game to make big money to have the grandchildren fed and clothed and flown first class.” Joe and his wife, Dr. Jill Biden, are both working on books that no one will want to read. (A Jill Biden biography released in 2022 sold just 250 copies in its first week.) Joe’s debut on the paid speaking circuit did not go well, and most Democrats want nothing to do with him, for obvious reasons. “The country would be better served if he rode off into the sunset,” one Democrat operative told Politico last month.

Most Americans would agree that what’s happening to the Bidens is painfully tragic and unfair. That explains why Jill Biden was so desperate to stay in the White House, her husband’s dementia be damned. The Biden family went from living large to begging for pardons to stay out of prison. Biden’s exit from the political arena means his son, Hunter, and brother, Jim, no longer have anything of value to offer the world. The prospects for maintaining the “lavish lifestyle” to which the Bidens have grown accustomed are not especially bright, Halperin said, noting that Hunter “does not have great earning capacity” these days. The degenerate crackhead admitted in court that he’s struggling with “significant” debts due the decline in “sales” of his “artwork,” which have failed to cover his hefty child support bill for the daughter he denied was his while (falsely) denouncing her mother as a common prostitute he didn’t remember sleeping with.

Diversity Is Not Our Strength

A nation of groups is thus an oxymoron. In the best of times, it will be a festering federation. In the worst, it will dissolve into warring tribes.

People used to get this. It was part of our popular understanding.

Toward the end of the 1952 Hollywood classic “Ivanhoe,” King Richard the Lionheart asks those assembled before him to kneel as Saxons, Normans, Danes, and Jews and then commands them to rise as “Englishmen.” Nobody had to explain why.

Today, we have set up a system in which we seemingly ask Americans to kneel and then rise as members of groups.

This baleful system dates to the 1970s. Activists intimidated the bureaucracy into creating new racial groups, which the Office of Management and Budget did in the 1970s, crafting umbrella clusters such as “Hispanics” or “Asian Americans” to include in the 1980 census. To these were later added groups based on sex, gender, sexual preferences, etc.

Then, these groups were kept apart by pursuing a diversity policy in the schools that deters assimilation. Finally, you instill actual grievances into the members of some groups by teaching them that members of others are oppressing them.

The High-School Juniors With $70,000-a-Year Job Offers

Rios, 17 years old, is a junior taking welding classes at Father Judge, a Catholic high school in Philadelphia that works closely with companies looking for workers in the skilled trades. Employers are dealing with a shortage of such workers as baby boomers retire. They have increasingly begun courting high-school students like Rios—a hiring strategy they say is likely to become even more crucial in the coming years.

Employers ranging from the local transit system to submarine manufacturers make regular visits to Father Judge’s welding classrooms every year, bringing branded swag and pitching students on their workplaces. When Rios graduates next year, he plans to work as a fabricator at a local equipment maker for nuclear, recycling and other sectors, a job that pays $24 an hour, plus regular overtime and paid vacations.

“Sometimes it’s a little overwhelming—like, this company wants you, that company wants you,” says Rios, who grew up in the Philadelphia neighborhood of Kensington around drug addicts and homelessness, and says he was determined to build a better life for himself. “It honestly feels like I’m an athlete getting all this attention from all these pro teams.”

Trump’s ‘Nuclear’ Deportation Options

The outlines are clear. Biden and his corrupt cronies left the U.S. southern border wide open for four years. Estimates vary but it’s likely 8 million illegal aliens crossed the border. But the actual number could be 10 million or higher. Of course, some just came for a better opportunity, but many were murderers, terrorists, rapists, sex traffickers, Chinese spies and every sort of violent low life you can imagine.

It’s nearly impossible to find and deport 8 million people. Biden made sure of that by ignoring the procedures for tracking and documenting the alien invasion. Trump’s policy of “remain in Mexico” while immigration cases were pending was abandoned by Biden. Many of the illegals got court dates, but those were scheduled years in advance. The expectation was that the court notices would be thrown in the trash, the illegals would not show up in court, and no enforcement action would be conducted.

Trump has launched a major deportation effort despite these handicaps. In any situation where you can accomplish part of the task but not all, the first move is to prioritize elements so you can devote resources to the best effect. Trump has done that also. He has prioritized the worst of the worst – criminals and terrorists – for early deportation. That reduces crime and violence in the U.S. and gives Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) a chance to hone their techniques for the larger task ahead.

How Wall Street Loopholes Funnel US Capital to Chinese Communist Party

American investors are unwittingly funding Chinese Communist Party activities through Wall Street loopholes, according to a securities expert who recently testified before Congress.

Chris Iacovella, CEO of the American Securities Association, told The Daily Signal these activities include “the internment of Uyghurs, funding [People’s Liberation Army] weapons systems, a cyber army that relentlessly attacks this country, our businesses, and our people, as well as numerous other atrocities from a human rights perspective, including genocide.”

Iacovella testified in April at a joint House-Senate hearing on the CCP about loopholes that allow Chinese companies to access U.S. capital markets despite a Chinese prohibition on foreign ownership.

Even as Pope, Leo XIV Might Have to Deal With U.S. Tax Returns

Pope Leo XIV, the newly elected pontiff, must answer to at least one more higher power: the IRS.

The United States generally requires all citizens to file an annual tax return, even those who live out of the country. But assuming he doesn’t renounce his U.S. citizenship, Leo — born in the Chicago area and known until this week as Robert Prevost — has special tax considerations, both as a clergyman and now as the head of a foreign government.

Leo’s situation differs from that of other popes in recent memory, because many countries do not assess taxes on citizens living abroad. “Recent popes from Poland, Germany and Argentina were not taxed by their home countries,” said Jared Walczak, a vice president of the Tax Foundation, a nonpartisan think tank in Washington, who called the first American pope’s accounting situation “uncharted.”

The U.S. is the only non-Turd-World country that does this.

The pope’s job as a member of the clergy does not exempt him from U.S. taxes. American citizens abroad must generally file tax returns if their income level and other personal circumstances would require them to file if they were living in the U.S., according to the Internal Revenue Service.

Now that’s comedy. The obvious move is for the Pope to renounce his American citizenship and remain only a citizen of the Vatican City State … but many Americans can’t climb that particular curb, as the people at Nomad Capitalist have discovered to their frustration.

They’ve Destroyed Jobs and Opportunity for Black Chicagoans

Illinois and Chicago politicians have made a mess of opportunities for blacks in Chicago. In preparation for my Chicago Tonight’s Black Voices appearance last week – more on that later – I pulled together several key facts on how Chicago blacks were fairing vs. the nation’s other big cities. The data, straight from the U.S. Census or the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, is dismal.

Chicago is stuck in a vicious spiral, where too much spending has led to too much debt, including massive pension debts. Taxes, as a result, have become increasingly punitive. Pile on top of that failing schools and crime, and that’s chased out people and businesses, driving down job creation and investment. Based on the data, minorities are paying a big price relative to their peers in other big cities.

The ‘N’ in SNAP Means Nutrition

SNAP, or the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, also known as food stamps, is one of the nation’s largest welfare programs.

And, like all welfare programs, it is massive, it has grown prodigiously over the years and it is inefficient.

One glaring issue, which is gaining attention as a result of new Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s Make America Healthy Again campaign, is the kinds of foods that recipients of SNAP funds can purchase.

And here we have convergence of bodily health and fiscal health.

The “N” in SNAP stands for nutrition. The point of the whole program is to help poor Americans eat and not forgo nutrition as result of insufficient funds to buy food. So why should government funds be used to purchase foods that are not fundamental to meeting the requirements of basic nutrition?

The program is funded by the federal government but administered by the states.

Any government program inevitably descends into cronyism, waste, fraud, and corruption–especially if Democrats are involved to any extent.

Freight Fraud, Cargo Theft, Deadly Collisions – Ghost Carriers Are Growing National Security Threat

On Tuesday, May 6, another in a pattern of horrific crashes involving 18-wheelers in America took place, this time in the small town of Thomasville, Alabama, about a hundred miles north of Mobile. In a video that went viral earlier this week, we see a tractor-trailer drive full speed into stopped traffic at an intersection, almost as if on purpose. Cars appeared to be vaporized in the crash, or flung aside as if toys. Two innocent motorists were killed instantly, and four others sent to the hospital.

Report: Body of American Journalist Austin Tice Found in Syria

The body of American journalist Austin Tice, who has been missing since 2012, was found in a cemetery in northern Syria, sources told Sky News Arabia on Sunday.Tice was kidnapped in Damascus, Syria in August of 2012, according to the FBI.

Results: Immunohistochemical analysis was performed to evaluate the expression of transforming growth factor beta-1 (TGF-?1), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), caspase-3, and anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) in ovarian follicles. Both vaccines induced significant increases in TGF-?1, VEGF, and caspase-3 expression, with more pronounced effects in the mRNA vaccine group. Conversely, AMH expression in the granulosa cells of primary, secondary, and antral follicles showed marked reductions (p < 0.001). The counts of primordial, primary, and secondary follicles decreased significantly in the inactivated vaccine group relative to controls and further in the mRNA vaccine group compared to the inactivated group (p < 0.001). Additionally, the mRNA vaccine group exhibited a decrease in antral and preovulatory follicles and an increase in atretic follicles compared to the other groups (p < 0.05). The serum AMH level was diminished with the mRNA vaccination in comparison with the control and inactivated groups.

The Costs and Consequences of Sexual Liberation

In brief, pithy chapters, Perry outlines persistent fallacies about the sexual revolution, including the idea that the contraceptive pill, access to abortion, and freedom from supposedly restrictive norms about sex out of wedlock would liberate women. The revolution in morals did bring new freedoms, she concedes, but they were not enjoyed equally. “The sexual revolution has not, in fact, freed all of us,” Perry writes. “It has freed some of us, at a price. Which is exactly what we should expect from such a massive change.” She argues that it is past time we set aside the popular narrative about the sexual revolution, which sees it “as a story only of progress.”

Central to Perry’s argument is the quietly radical acknowledgment of differences between the sexes. The longstanding feminist message that, when it comes to sex, girls can do anything boys can do, is dangerously simplistic. “I accept the fact that men and women are different,” Perry writes. “They have different goals and interests. Those differences aren’t going away.”

These differences, moreover, spring from biological realities that feminism has either ignored or attempted to replace with specious claims: “Liberal feminism promises women freedom,” Perry writes. “But female biology imposes, in reality, limits on that freedom. Women get pregnant, and being pregnant and having children is not compatible with complete freedom.”

“What I didn’t like about becoming famous overnight,” Mallory McMorrow writes in her new book Hate Won’t Win: Find Your Power and Leave This Place Better Than You Found It, “is that you might assume that I had always done this, that somehow it came naturally.”

Unless you’re a journalist or a celebrity (or some other form of partisan Democrat who obsessively follows politics), you’re probably wondering: Who the hell is Mallory McMorrow??? And why is she famous???

McMorrow is a two-term state senator from Michigan and a former Hot Wheels designer for Mattel. She was filled with “rage” after Donald Trump beat Hillary Clinton in 2016, so she started writing mean postcards to Betsy DeVos, the secretary of education. When that didn’t work, she decided to run for office. In 2022, she became a liberal superstar after a Republican colleague accused her of trying to “groom” children. The angsty five-minute speech McMorrow gave in response, which the author proudly dubs “The Speech,” was a rousing defense of Democratic efforts to prevent the removal of overly sexualized content from kindergarten classrooms. It was the primal scream of a “straight, white, Christian, married, suburban mom” who refused to let “hate win.” It was profound. “The room froze as those words hit the towering walls of the chamber like shots out of a cannon,” McMorrow recalls with Obamaesque self-pride. Naturally, this sent thrills up the legs of MSNBC employees and viewers alike. “I felt it in my soul,” Jonathan Capehart gushed.

Trump Fires Director of U.S. Copyright Office, Sources Say

The Trump administration has fired the head of the U.S. Copyright Office, two sources familiar with the situation confirmed to CBS News Saturday.

The firing of Register of Copyrights Shira Perlmutter came after Perlmutter and her office earlier this week issued part three of a lengthy report about artificial intelligence and expressed some concerns and questions about the usage of copyrighted materials by AI technology.

“It is an open question, however, how much data an AI developer needs, and the marginal effect of more data on a model’s capabilities,” the report read. “Not everyone agrees that further increases in data and test performance will necessarily lead to continued real world improvements in utility.”

The Real Reason Universities Want Foreign Students and Oppose Deporting Troublemakers

The State Department had revoked about 1,500 visas throughout the United States as of late April, Inside Higher Ed estimates. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has investigated some of them, and some visa holders will be asked to leave or be deported if they have broken the conditions of their student status per U.S. immigration law. A small number may be deported if the secretary of state, Marco Rubio, deems their presence detrimental to U.S. foreign policy.

Two professors at Cornell and Yale claimed in The Washington Post that “our foreign students are terrified, and they’re right to be.”

Please. No foreign student who is obeying the conditions of his visa and staying focused on his studies has anything to worry about.

Who else should worry? Yale professors such as Erika and Nicholas Christakis, who treat students as adults, only to then deal with tantrums and Ivy League cancel culture. A decade ago, the Christakises were hounded by students for telling them that a Halloween costume probably wasn’t an intentional hate crime. Don’t think Yale has gotten more tolerant since then. Students from Yalies4Palestine recently tried to build an encampment and reportedly blocked Jewish students from going to class.

DERELICTION OF DUTY: Chief Justice John Roberts Admits It’s His Job to Rein in the Judicial Insurrection—and He’s Not Doing It

The deep state and its allies have launched a judicial insurrection against President Donald Trump, and Chief Justice John Roberts effectively just admitted he’s not doing his job to stop it.

Roberts made a rare public statement back in March, criticizing Trump and other Republicans who have suggested impeaching judges to prevent them from taking it upon themselves to make national policy through injunctions. Yet Roberts refused to address the underlying issue, and he dodged again in public remarks Wednesday.

“What do you think of these calls for impeachment of judges based on the decisions that they’ve made?” Judge Lawrence Vilardo asked Roberts in an interview in Buffalo, New York.

“Impeachment is not how you register disagreement with decisions,” the chief justice said, repeating the substance of his comments in March.

“That’s what you’re there for,” Vilardo responded.

“That’s what we’re there for,” Roberts agreed.

Again, Roberts overlooked the underlying issue. Republicans aren’t calling for the impeachment of justices because they disagree with one particular decision—they’re exasperated because judge after judge after judge is effectively usurping the president’s authority by issuing so many nationwide injunctions.

11 Percent of Columbia Library Arrestees Identify as They/Them—Nearly 7 Times America’s Trans Population

At least 9 of the 81 people, or 11 percent, arrested in connection with storming a Columbia University library Wednesday use “they/them” pronouns, a review of public records by the Washington Free Beacon shows. That share is well above the 1.6 percent of Americans who identify as transgender or nonbinary, according to the Pew Research Center, and more than double the 5 percent of people who identify as transgender or nonbinary under 30.

The brood of agitators run the gamut from longtime professional protesters, to otherwise carefree writers and poets. Most have long histories steeped in transgender activism. The group was part of a mob that raided and vandalized Butler Library, handed out pro-Hamas pamphlets, and injured two security officials. They were offered a chance to leave peacefully if they showed their identification, but the radicals refused and were arrested after a standoff.

The disproportionate numbers come amid growing awareness of transgender-inspired violence which has in recent years included shootings in Covenant School in Tennessee, STEM School Highlands Ranch shooting in Colorado, and a 2018 mass shooting in Aberdeen, Maryland, which left four dead. Ted Kaczynski, the Unabomber, also famously suffered from gender dysphoria, and once attempted a sex change.

The charge from NIH Director Jay Bhattacharya came during an uncomfortable and confusing interview with Science Magazine reporter Jocelyn Kaiser last week. The DisInformation Chronicle is releasing a recording of the interview and a transcript.

During almost 20 minutes of back and forth, Kaiser pressed Bhattacharya several times to account for canceled grants as well as news accounts of turmoil inside the agency, while Bhattacharya asked Kaiser to clarify and explain exactly what she was asking. Kaiser’s interview then ended up in two Science Magazine articles that falsely implied Bhattacharya misled Kaiser about a new policy on NIH grants.

DHS Secretary Kristi Noem Defends Massive Change for Exposed Anti-Free Speech Agency

A Democratic representative mourned a huge change to a government agency responsible for massive censorship. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem put him in his place.

Rep. Ed Case (D-HI) went after Noem during a House Appropriations Committee hearing on Tuesday, criticizing President Donald Trump’s proposed $491 million funding cut for the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA). In response, Noem told Case that the DHS would stop wasting money and funding censorship.

“We have focused on making sure that we’re going forward with a Department of Homeland Security that focuses on what our mission is and that is to secure America’s homeland and do that while being accountable to taxpayers,” Noem said.

She added, “So every single component I have—23 different departments—we’ve gone back to their mission statement and what they were intended to do and put them back on mission. So in CISA instead of doing censorship, misinformation [and] disinformation, they’re back to securing our critical infrastructure.”

Carville Joins Vance in Slamming Rep. Omar

Vice President JD Vance has found an unlikely ally in condemning Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn.: Democrat strategist James Carville.

In a post Monday on X, Vance shared a video clip from another post of Omar saying in a 2018 interview with Al Jazeera: “Our country should be more fearful of white men across our country because they are actually causing most of the deaths within this country. We should be profiling, monitoring, and creating policies to fight the radicalization of white men.”

Vance wrote: “This isn’t just sick; it’s actually genocidal language. What a disgrace this person is.”

Imagine the plight of a country where one can make a political career in that country out of hating it.
