The socialist mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, recently organised a ‘citizens’ vote’ (votation citoyenne) to ask Parisians about the appropriateness of a particularly punishing parking fee for SUVs, which she considers too bulky and too polluting. The vote in favour of a specific tax won the day, but in a highly questionable ballot and with an ideology emblematic of the disastrous way in which Hidalgo is managing France’s capital city.
SUVs, or sport utility vehicles, are large motor vehicles with four-wheel drive and off-road capability. Initially designed as leisure vehicles, they have become increasingly popular in recent years, including in cities where the road infrastructure (narrow streets, car parks) is not necessarily suited to their size. They get bad press because they are considered too bulky and too polluting—some towns are even considering banning them. In Paris, Mayor Anne Hidalgo has come up with the plan to subject them to a punitive parking fee—significantly higher than that for ordinary vehicles. But before introducing these regulations, she wanted to put the measure to the people of Paris for their approval.
An enthusiast of ‘participatory democracy,’ Anne Hidalgo has been holding an increasing number of impromptu votes on specific issues relating to the organisation of urban life since she took office as mayor of Paris. The stated aim is to give Parisians a say, but the methods used are highly questionable. While the proliferation of ‘participatory’ opportunities has not aroused the enthusiasm of Parisians, who have become accustomed to shunning these untimely elections, it has triggered hilarity in the Swiss, who know a thing or two about direct democracy.

The first time the New York Times ever mentioned the phrase “Black Lives Matter” in its history going back to 1851 was August 21, 2014, twelve days after Michael Brown’s death at Ferguson, MO. Since then, it has run 5,915 more articles with the phrase “Black Lives Matter.”
As you can see, there were two eras in which Black Lives Matter was ascendant: 2015-2016 (the Ferguson Effect), after which Soros and other smart money funders let it slowly fizzle, followed by the utter insanity of 2020-21 (the Floyd Effect), after which, I’m guessing, the Biden White House got the word through to the NYT than it was no longer in the Democratic Party’s electoral best interests to continue harping on BLM.
…
For reasons utterly baffling to the New York Times, this barrage of concern for black lives led to a big boost in black deaths in BLM Era I and then a huge boost in black deaths in BLM Era II. It’s almost as if the cops got the message that the Establishment didn’t want them to hassle as many black drivers for driving badly, so they didn’t. In turn, blacks drove worse, died more in car crashes, and carried more illegal handguns when they went out, which led to more blacks shooting more blacks.

Few would have contended, just some years ago, that it would come to this. Armed with Rawlsian gibberish, the liberal establishment has finally decided to do away with the masquerade. Liberalism’s own altarpieces of political liberty, freedom of the press, and the rule of law have finally been cast aside with liberating frankness.
The examples are, by now, too many and too egregious to describe in detail. It likely began in France, that nation of liberty so adept in the ugly art of persecution. Many were surprised when, in 2017, France’s leader of the opposition, Marine Le Pen, had her European parliamentary immunity rescinded on the shamelessly bogus charge of ‘publicizing ISIS.’ She had, instead, tweeted gruesome images of the Salafist group’s crimes precisely in order to denounce it. Having enjoyed this first taste of judicial abuse, the international establishment took note and readied itself for more. It was not long until what had once been taboo became the new norm. In the U.S., President Trump had to undergo the ignominy of having his Mar-a-Lago home searched by the FBI. Democrats have, more recently, been playing judicial games to bar him from the 2024 Republican ticket.

ZMan’s weekly podcast. Highly recommended.
A recurring theme in the parade of madness that passes for the public life of late empire America is the lawlessness. Every week we get some new outrageous subversion of the law from the courts or from the government. These are the institutions charged with defending the law because it is the law that ultimately defends the people. The reason we have government is to defend the law.
The Steyn case is the latest example, but hardly a surprising one. Slowly people are coming to understand that if you go into a courtroom it is a lottery and that assumes they cannot accuse you of heresy. Even under ideal conditions you could be faced with a deranged lunatic as a judge or a jury full of morons. Trial by combat is now a preferable option than the American court system.
We also got word from the government that Joe Biden cannot and will not be charged with mishandling government secrets because he is non compos mentis, but he can be president, while Trump can be charged because he is not insane or demented, but he cannot be president. You have to wonder if we are in a simulation and the people running it have been dropping acid.
Actually, if they were on acid, we’d be better off.

The ascent of AI has naturally lent itself to the rise of AI adult content, which people have used to get their jollies off by employing the hot new technology to craft women in various states of undress. Obviously, this has come with some serious ethical issues, but it isn’t all that surprising, as new technology tends to cut its teeth in NSFW content before becoming mainstream.
This has made a recent trend where people appear to be doing the opposite and use AI to make real women more clothed peculiar, and this new #DignifAI trend has sparked intense debate on social media.
Apparently putting virtual clothes on half-naked women is mysoginist. Who knew?

“No reasonable prosecutor”: remember him? He’s back! No, not James “Higher Loyalty” Comey. He’s sitting in a corner somewhere counting his doubloons. But like some inky creatures of the deep, he emitted lots of spawn. They’re maturing now and taking after dear old dad.
Remember the original sitcom. Despite the best efforts of every one from the country’s “intelligence” chiefs to its fawning media, news emerged that Hillary Clinton had essentially run the State Department from an insecure server in her home.
On that server, it transpired, there were thousands of classified documents (along, of course, with yoga routines and plans for her daughter’s wedding). Presented with a subpoena to turn in the classified docs — there were some 30,000 of them. Hillary simply BleachBit the lot and dared Comey to do something about it.
He didn’t, of course. “No reasonable prosecutor,” you see would pursue such a case. Now James Comey’s spiritual heir has strode into the limelight. Meet Robert Hur, the very, extra-special, supercalifragilisticexpialidocious special counsel charged with looking into Joe Biden’s possession of classified (many “top secret” and above) in his den, basement, in his garage behind his vroom-vroom Corvette and in sundry other places in Washington’s Chinatown.

In a Congressional hearing last spring, Gil Cisneros, then-Under Secretary for Military Readiness, announced that the Pentagon was closing its newly formed Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion within its K-12 school system and reassigning its controversial DEI chief after a ten-month internal investigation.
The Pentagon’s climb-down was a big win for OpenTheBooks.com. We had worked alongside whistleblowers, journalists, other investigative non-profits, and ranking members of Congress to expose alleged conflicts of interest, violations of military ethics policies, and radical ideologies being forced on the kids of servicemen and servicewomen.
Today, we are announcing Cisneros was actually faking. The radical curriculum was not dismantled. Instead, it was stealthily embedded into the lesson plans and classrooms throughout the entire school system.

When I visit foreign countries, I often go into bookstores. They provide a window into how cultures think. Thumbing through high-school history books in Japan, I noticed that many were divided into two sections: one dedicated to Japanese history, and the other resembling a Western history textbook, including material on ancient Greece, the medieval feudal system, the Renaissance, the Enlightenment, and so on. They covered the same core Western Civilization topics that are the focus in classical schools in the US.
It seems strange that citizens of many non-Western countries recognize a value in Western civilization that many in the West themselves cannot or will not see. An OECD survey of over 20 of the most advanced countries in the world found that Japan scored highest of all in “proficiency in literacy and numeracy among adults.” But the current proliferation of classical schools across America indicates that there are many other Westerners who do recognize the value of Western culture and want to ensure that it is passed on to future generations.
It is also odd that the classical education movement is sometimes described as elitist. In point of fact, it is driven by millions of everyday working parents, homeschool mothers, and local community leaders. Critical theory is the opposite: a product of ideologues who shelter in elite universities but claim to represent the oppressed masses. Classical schools have been expanding rapidly due to demand from millions of families; critical theory is pushed on millions of families despite resistance, as illustrated at countless contentious school-board meetings publicized on YouTube. Critical theory requires the uncritical consumption of ideological dogma; classical education asks us to accept the value of a dialogue of ideas that has transpired in the West over millennia, a value recognized in foreign countries like Japan.

By some counts, the Biden Junta has allowed more than eight million foreign nationals to enter the United States illegally. Donald Trump and others contend that Democrats are “signing them up” to vote. As legal immigrants and legitimate citizens should know, illegals have been voting for a long time in California, the model Democrats now seek for the entire country.
In 1996, illegals cast 784 votes against Republican Robert Dornan in a congressional race Democrat Loretta Sanchez won by only 984 votes. Spearheading the voter fraud was the Stalinist Bert Corona, founder of Hermandad Mexicana Nacional. He failed to comply with a subpoena and the Justice Department declined to take any action. For the vote fraudsters it was more steps forward with no steps back.
In 2013 the state passed Assembly Bill 60 the “Safe and Responsible Drivers Act,” which enabled false-documented foreign nationals to get driver’s licenses. In 2015 California passed Assembly Bill 1461, the “California New Motor Voter Act” which automatically registered the illegals to vote. “At the latest, for the 2018 election cycle,” Secretary of State Alex Padilla told the Los Angeles Times, “I expect millions of new voters on the rolls in the state of California.”

One of the underappreciated aspects of the French Revolution is how the ruling class system became detached from the overall social system. The people in the ruling class were ignorant of what was happening in the country and not just the social unrest, but the economic changes that were coming. The people were just as ignorant about why their rulers were doing the things they were doing. Pre-revolutionary France was two black boxes left to guess about the contents of the other.
The United States is entering a similar period. Much of what makes up internet political content is either a reaction to some new emission from the managerial elite or an effort to contextualize those emissions. No one can be sure why the ruling class is doing the things they are doing, as it is not tied to anything normal people experience, so the Dirt People are left to produce their own explanations. Dirt People political culture is a debate about what in the hell is going on in the clouds.
The people in charge could very well be holographic projections from an alien world as far as anyone knows. Their actions and statements rarely correspond to their stated interests or the social interests. You see it in this big drama they are staging for themselves over the failed Senate bill on immigration. Somehow, official Washington convinced themselves that bundling Israel money, Ukraine money and open borders money was a winning formular with the Dirt People.

Something I’m increasingly sceptical of in modern mental health culture is this constant insistence to open up. Share your story! says every celebrity. Speak out! says every company. Men aren’t opening up enough, says pretty much every mainstream publication. In fact last week in the UK it was #TimeToTalk Day, urging us to “be more open about mental health and share how we really feel”.
My main concern with this is that Gen Z are very lonely and screen-addicted and so often take this advice and start opening up online. All over the internet, my generation are sharing their autism traits, ADHD habits and Tourette’s tics. Plus deeply personal moments: traumatic events, anxiety attacks and mental breakdowns. On TikTok #mentalhealth has over 127 billion views; #trauma alone has almost 30 billion.
The chief problem with ‘social media’ is that it encourages everybody to be LAME (“Look At Me, Everybody”), and NOBODY CARES.

From the end of the Second World War until early 2022, the geopolitics of our world followed a very similar pattern. The pattern was that borders were sacred, they could not change, and this narrative was enforced by the United Nations and America’s military might. This meant rival ethnicities and religious sects were often forced together into nations they despised—as in the example of Iraq—where different groups have fought continuously since independence in 1932. Any attempt by the Sunnis, Shias, or Kurds to break off has been met by Western condemnation, yet military intervention by the latter exacerbated the chaos.
The problem is that the West’s foreign policy is informed by liberalism, the central pillar being that people should get along. This is why Washington disapproved of Serbia annexing areas of Kosovo populated by Serbs, and why it despised the idea of reshaping the Middle East’s boundaries so that Kurds, Shias and Sunnis could have their own states. Even though such moves make sense from an ethnic and religious perspective—and would certainly make peace more likely—the option is always repudiated. This is because redrawing the maps would entail admitting an obvious truth: that some cultures are incompatible with each other.
Iraq is three nations crammed into one country; Libya is three; Afghanistan is closer to five.

Slavery is white history. How we survived it is black history.
Matt Walsh answers:
Slavery is world history. White people did not invent it, and were not the first to practice it, but were the first to abolish it. The last place in the world to still have legal slavery was Africa. It wasn’t fully legally abolished on the continent until 1981.
The most ironic aspect of ‘black history’ is the affection among African Americans for Islam and Muslim names, since Arabs were one of the major participants in the black slave trade; black slavery existed in Saudi Arabia until at least 1964.

The use of the word “coach” as a synonym for tutor emerged from Oxford University during the 1830s to convey the idea of someone carrying a student through their exams. Initially associated with sports and organisational efficiency, today the realm of the coach has expanded to include everything falling under the banner of life.
A form of personal development ostensibly intended to help individuals achieve personal and professional success, the rapid growth of the life-coaching industry has accelerated exponentially since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. At a time when the global shutdown prompted many people to question values around work and relationships, the life coach—aided by Instagram, TikTok, and Zoom—has emerged as a fashionably new response to the age-old question of how to live the good life. But the popularity of this trend raises questions about the ethics of a nascent industry and the potential damage it may inflict on vulnerable people.
I’d use the term ‘grift’ rather than ‘sophistry’, but, yeah, pretty much. Any0ne who thinks that he or she needs a ‘life coach’ needs a lot more help than just a ‘life coach’.

The open border has enabled the Left to amass more political power. Democratic-controlled states have gained congressional seats by welcoming and harboring illegal aliens.
As president, Donald Trump tried to halt this wrongdoing by ordering the census to exclude all noncitizens from apportionment. But one of President Joe Biden’s first acts in office was to reverse this policy as he began to open the border to millions of illegal aliens.
Barring the census from including noncitizens in apportionment is critical in making sure that American citizens—the only population who can and should vote in U.S. elections—are picking America’s leaders.

While fighting Russian electronic warfare (EW), Ukrainian forces have developed new electronic warfare systems faster than Russia can create countermeasures or attack methods. The objective of EW is to tap into enemy electronic signals and hijack or block them while preventing the enemy from doing the same to you. The electronic signals here chiefly involve radio for communicating with or controlling UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles). These signals can be blocked by the enemy or even hijacked so the enemy can take control of your UAVs. This can be done so that the owner of the UAV doesn’t realize it until the enemy suddenly takes control and uses your UAV against you.
The same method can be used with radar to either manipulate the signal so that it makes the enemy radar user believe nothing is out there or that what the enemy radar shows is not where it actually is or that there are multiple items indicated when there is actually only one. Radar jamming has become increasingly sophisticated, and aircraft can carry a container of EW equipment, like a bomb underneath a wing. These EW pods contain a wide variety of EW options. These pods are often updated to detect and manipulate certain signals. The Americans obtained current Russian EW equipment and scrutinized them. Their findings were shared with the Ukrainians and some NATO allies.

In the 1930s, the world had three powers that aspired to dominate the world: the communists of the Soviet Union under Stalin, who sought a worldwide proletariat revolution that redistributed wealth to the masses; the Nazis of Germany under Hitler, who sought to establish a global top-down fascist regime; and the United States under FDR, who sought to spread free-market capitalism throughout the world.
Although these three powers competed for global dominance with each other, they nonetheless sought alliances of convenience when it served their interests. Stalin tried to form an alliance with the West to counter Hitler’s rise, and when rebuffed he entered into a non-aggression pact with Hitler. Later, the capitalist West and communist Russia allied against fascist Germany.
Today, the world has five globalist elites with worldwide aspirations—communist China and Islamists have joined refashioned successors of the three of the 1930s. As in the 1930s, the elites form alliances and cooperate in numerous areas, often to crush opposition from their own subjects.

Why have so many American leftists spent the last nine years dunking on Donald Trump’s supporters instead of seeking to understand them? With Trump likely to become the Republican nominee in this year’s US presidential election, it’s a question worth asking.
In many online spaces, Trump supporters are routinely dismissed as cult members and white supremacists consumed with misogyny. In the best case, the idea goes, they want to take America back to the 1950s. In the worst case, they want to demolish our liberal democracy altogether and replace it with either fascism or theocracy.
Of course, there are radicals and bigots in all political movements. But the idea that these intellectual pathologies extend to Trump’s entire voting base is inaccurate and unhelpful. Moreover, these attitudes only seem to further energize Trump’s supporters, who’ve come to believe (not unreasonably) that they’re despised by American “elites.”

Connolly, a member of the committee, said he didn’t favor the bill in its current form because it failed to encompass a broader condemnation of all persecution in Nigeria, including against “the gay and lesbian community.”

What used to be considered “hotspots” for workers on those apps, feel a little colder since Jan. 13, according to several drivers we heard from. That includes Gary Lardizabal, a longtime, app-based, food delivery driver in Seattle.
“Sundays before the ordinance,” Lardizabal. “You know, we’d be thinking breakfast. Today, I didn’t even touch it. They’re not going to order. It is definitely backfiring.”
Since the ordinance went into effect last month, Mia Shagen said her delivery opportunities have been slashed.
“I’ve got nothin,” Shagen said. “I’m not gonna sit here for hours for one frickin’ order.”
Even on typically busy delivery days, groups of drivers can be seen waiting around together in groups in high-density restaurant areas.
“Instead of it stopping at 2:30 or 3:00, it’s stopping at like one o’clock, sometimes even a little bit before,” Shagen said. “So literally at like one o’clock, suddenly, there are no orders anymore.”
Gee, you’d think that raising the price would cut the demand or something! What’s up with that?
Pass a law, fix a problem! That’s all it takes, right? “Think it through!” said no politician, ever.

In an attempt to ease campus “tension” following Hamas’s Oct. 7 attack on Israel, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is slated to bring a series of guest speakers to campus—including one who endorsed Hamas terrorism as an act of lawful “resistance.”
As part of its “Standing Together Against Hate” initiative, MIT is slated to hold a March 18 talk on Islamophobia featuring Boston University antibigotry fellow Dalia Mogahed. While MIT says the talk will help “bring our community together” by addressing “real tension between some groups and individuals,” Mogahed’s hostile rhetoric toward the Jewish state suggests her speech will have the opposite effect.
On Jan. 19, for example, Mogahed argued that Hamas is allowed to terrorize Israel under international law because Palestinians are “living under occupation.”

Britain now has the highest level of recorded acid attacks in the world, at 710, rising 45% from 2021-2022. Despite desperate attempts by multiculturalism apologists to link this to crimes in Victorian times, honour-based acid attacks are not a native English pastime. Ninety percent of acid attacks occur in low-income countries in Asia and Africa—where Britain has sourced most of its record influx of immigrants after Brexit. The imported practice has gained salience since Afghan asylum seeker Abdul Ezedi doused a mother and her two children with a corrosive substance in Clapham, South London. These crimes are themselves a solvent for cultural cohesion and faith in politics and the rule of law—but our political class insists on turning a blind eye to them. They would rather weaponise it as a wedge issue for their existing political ambitions.

Last week, the American journalist Tucker Carlson interviewed Bret Weinstein, a professional biologist who became a public intellectual after he and his scientist wife were driven out of their woke university for refusing to cooperate with a diversity program they regarded as racist. Though he has been a lifelong leftist and atheist, Weinstein’s iconoclastic observations and commentaries have been embraced by conservatives who are more interested in truth than ideological conformity. It turns out that people like him, who find themselves thrust outside the bubble of epistemic closure, often see things that the rest of us do not.
On the Carlson program, Weinstein reported on his recent visit to the Darién Gap, the densely forested patch of land in Panama, through which all migrants headed north from South America must pass. For most of the millions of migrants who have passed this way headed to the United States in recent years, this is the most perilous part of their journey. Weinstein, who is familiar with the area from his field research there as a biologist, was shocked to see NGOs everywhere in the Darién Gap, and also the United Nations migration office.
“The United States Government is facilitating this economic migration,” he said on the show. “It’s unmistakable.”
Of course they are. Duh.
Even more shocking was a separate refugee transit camp for Chinese migrants. This was the only camp that Weinstein and his companion were not allowed to visit by the Panamanian government. These are all men who made their way from China to Ecuador (where they can be admitted without a visa), and then northward towards the United States. When the Americans approached Chinese men who had left their camp to buy supplies, the Chinese set themselves apart from all other migrants by refusing to talk about their journey.
Weinstein concluded that these Chinese men are not interested in reaching America for the sake of economic opportunity, like most of the migrants. Theirs, he believes, is an “invasion” cloaked within an economic migration—one that the Biden administration has taken no actions to stop. What’s more, he says, this cloaking makes it hard to discuss the Chinese issue.
The scientist was shocked to see no mainstream U.S. journalists on the ground there, reporting on this extraordinary event—the presence of large numbers of fighting-age men from an enemy superpower making their way to the U.S. border. Why is the U.S. government not only letting this happen, but paying for it? Why doesn’t the media care?
