Walking the dog every day now, I don’t get to the book store very often anymore. But I left the dog behind and went today.
Didn’t find anything new of interest. It looks like the two main topics of new books are “We Wish We Still Had Trump to Kick Around Because Without Him We Don’t Have Anything Interesting to Say” and “I’m a Black Person and Here’s My Story About How Hard It Is Being Black.”
That’s about all that’s available these days.

As I asked back in 2013, why were the Boston Bomb Brothers in America anyway? My best guess is because their Uncle Ruslan, was, for four years, the son-in-law of CIA insider Graham E. Fuller, the former CIA station chief in Kabul. Uncle Ruslan is a D.C. lawyer involved in negotiating energy deals in Central Asia. If Chechnya ever breaks away from Russia and becomes an American client state, Uncle Ruslan would be a reasonable candidate for Minister of Energy in the new state.
This is not to say that the Boston Marathon Bombing was a false flag or a Washington operation, but that there remain a lot of interesting questions about who let in the Bomb Brothers and why.
I should like to point out that the younger of the two is still alive.

The following article (translated from the German) concerns the demographic crisis in France, which is well on its way to becoming a third-world country.
It’s all very well for the alarmists to issue their warnings now, but in my opinion it will make no practical difference. The point of no return was passed a long time ago, probably more than a decade ago. Nothing can prevent the dénouement now. The situation will inevitably end in a general collapse or civil war, or more likely a combination of the two. Assuming we don’t hit a nuclear winter before that.
The rest of the West is headed for the same destination. France and Sweden may be a couple of cars ahead of us, but we’re all on the same train.

In case you didn’t know that, Benjamin “Bibi” Netanyahu, prime minister of Israel, makes sure you’re apprised in the very first pages of Bibi: My Story, his compellingly told memoir of a lifetime in politics, business, diplomacy, and a lot of shooting wars.
In 1972 he led a group of special forces soldiers in the elite Sayeret Matkal unit of the Israeli military in a raid on a hijacked Sabena plane that had been diverted to an airport outside Tel Aviv, Israel. He recounts with evident pride how he tussled with his older brother Yoni, also in the elite unit, who wanted to pull rank on him and lead the raid himself. Bibi resisted, and prevailed.
Netanyahu’s elder brother, Yoni, was an American citizen and died leading the Entebbe raid–the only Israeli to do so.
When did a Biden ever expose himself to that sort of risk?

You have to give Roxanna Asgarian credit for laying all her cards on the table. The author of We Were Once a Family: A Story of Love, Death, and Child Removal in America tells readers at the outset that “as a journalist, I was most interested in looking at who has power and who does not.” In some ways, this places Asgarian in a long tradition of muckraking reporters looking out for the little guy. But then she adds that “journalists are often taught … to get out of the way of the story. This ethic has its merits, but it has costs as well.” Asgarian has weighed the options and decided that she is not a “passive observer of injustice.”

Newsbsusters.
Tax day is Tuesday this year, so millions of Americans will spend this weekend poring over their records, filling out their returns and writing checks payable to the U.S. Treasury. Last year, the federal government took in a record $4.9 trillion in revenue, more than triple the $1.58 trillion the government collected just 25 years earlier (1997).
That’s an average increase of more than eight percent a year, far more than the rate of inflation (which has averaged 2.4% annually over the past 25 years) plus the increase in the U.S. population (roughly 0.7% annually). The total of all economic activity in the United States per year (GDP) is currently $26.1 trillion, which means the federal government now claims nearly one-fifth (19.6%) of all dollars for itself, a much higher rate than the long-term average of 16.5 percent.
Yet, it’s still not enough money to fulfill all the promises dreamed up by politicians looking for votes. The federal budget hasn’t been balanced since 2001; decades of deficit spending has led to a cumulative national debt of more than $31 trillion.
Yet instead of holding politicians accountable for their impossible promises and reckless stewardship of the nation’s finances, the media lobby for more punishing taxes to be imposed on the public. This has been true during both Democratic and Republican administrations, wartime and peacetime, and in boom times and busts.
The media don’t have the power to raise taxes, but they do have the ability to steer the national conversation toward the solutions they prefer. And instead of making over-spending an issue, the news media have relentlessly pushed for even more of the nation’s wealth to be handed over to the federal government to spend….

Scouring the labels of what their children had eaten, both mothers were horrified to discover that sesame was now listed as an ingredient in the cheeseburger, the bread and other baked products that had previously been sesame-free. “I’d been unknowingly poisoning [Mia] for several weeks,” said McDermott, who lives in Philadelphia.
What happened? On Jan. 1, a law intended to safeguard the more than 1.5 million Americans with a sesame allergy — including the McDermott and Tibbs children (and, full disclosure, my son as well) — took effect. The law mandates, among other things, careful cleaning to prevent cross-contact between food products with and without sesame.
In a twist few would have expected, however, many food companies have chosen to add small amounts of sesame flour to products that were previously sesame-free, instead of conducting the careful cleaning required for foods without sesame.
The result? Foods that sesame-allergic kids and adults have eaten safely for years are now potentially life-threatening.
Proglodyte regulators always believe that people will just comply with their rules and not figure out a way around them. That old Law of Unintended Consequences bites people–other than the regulators, of course–on the butt again.

Modern colleges are training grounds for political insurrectionists.
The pro-crime movement that swept America began in part with an article by Angela Davis, “Racialized Punishment and Prison Abolition.” Davis, a UCLA academic, started by quoting Michel Foucault, a French academic with the Collège de France.
Foucault’s ‘Discipline and Punish’, which Davis described as “arguably the most influential text in contemporary studies of the prison system” remains widely studied on college campuses along with Davis’ racial spin that long since entered politics and pop culture in the form of police defunding and other allied efforts to eliminate prisons, prosecutions and the justice system.
The two activist academics were not really interested in crime and the penal system as a field of research. They were bent on fomenting a civil war that would put the Left in power.

When University of Kentucky swimmer Riley Gaines was accosted by a pro-trans mob at San Francisco State University, it revealed the irrational anger displayed by so many on the Left. We have seen it directed against conservatives all across the nation. So, what explains the anger and its justification of canceling all those who oppose them?
First and foremost, it is a characteristic of the Manichean worldview of the postmodern Left. The forces arrayed against them, which are essentially White Anglo-Saxon civilization along with its traditional values, are considered evil incarnate. They see them as the forces behind racism, misogyny, colonialism, exploitation, and the destruction of the environment. Who in his right mind would want to be “nice” to such thoroughly evil people? There is no small amount of righteous indignation behind their calls to “cancel” their opponents.
Second, since at least the 1960s, protest for the Left came to be seen as “shutting down” the opposition, taking over their buildings, preventing them from speaking. Much of this goes back to the conventional wisdom of the radical left expressed by Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals, which took the Marxist approach of eliminating opponents rather than “debating” them. This is not a battle about ideas and influence, it is the pursuit of advantage and power. The Left has, for a long time, used violence and intimidation as a strategy for “taking over” and gaining control. The occupied zone in Seattle was not a bug, it was a feature of the anarchist, Antifa Left.

Ibtihaj Muhammad made history as the first hijab-clad athlete on the U.S. Olympic team. The bronze medal winning fencer from the 2016 summer games was featured on magazine covers, spawned a line of sportswear and even a Barbie doll.
But in court papers filed late Tuesday, a New Jersey elementary school teacher says Muhammad deserves a different reputation: Liar.
In October 2021 social media posts, Muhammad accused veteran schoolteacher Tamar Herman of abusing a 7-year-old Muslim student by “forcibly” pulling off her hijab as “the young student resisted.” After exposing the girl’s hair to the class, Herman then told her that “her hair was beautiful and she did not have to wear hijab to school anymore,” Muhammad wrote.
Herman insists that didn’t happen and contacted Muhammad to offer her side of the story. But when Herman, who had Muhammad’s cell phone number, texted to say her post was “completely false and terribly damaging,” Muhammad ignored her. Now, Muhammad says she had no idea who Herman was.
Muhammad’s claims, filed last month, “are outright falsehoods,” Herman says. And they are “further evidence [of] her actual malice, i.e. reckless disregard for the truth.”

I was disappointed in 2021 to read that Stanford had been sued by a number of its athletes when the school, without warning, told them it had decided to drop 11 varsity sports teams. Those sports included men’s volleyball, wrestling and rowing. Women were to lose sports like synchronized swimming, rowing and fencing. President Marc Tessier-Lavigne, Provost Persis Drell and Athletic Director Bernard Muir said the cut was a budget necessity, and was needed to keep Stanford “competitive” with other schools. That turned out not to be true. In fact, the school rejected alumni financing of the sports. I was further angered when I read that Tessier-Lavigne may have co-authored a number of scientific papers with “manipulated images.” I was then saddened to read about Stanford soccer player Katie Meyer, who had committed suicide last March after a badly botched disciplinary action Stanford attempted to take against her. Her parents filed a lawsuit against Stanford in October.
These are some of the more serious scandals involving the school in the last three years. There have been less severe missteps taken by those who are supposedly in the business of running an elite, world renowned university, but even these smaller mistakes seem to indicate a larger problem. One of my classmates (I graduated in 1970) complains that the administration is of late “rudderless,” stumbling from one crisis to another. He may not make his annual donation to the school as a result. I think it is time to ask: exactly who manages Stanford? And how are they making decisions? Is it the President? The Board of Trustees? Or a small group of individuals known only to a few?

Democrats and liberal pundits want Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D., Calif.) to resign immediately. She’s absurdly old (89), cognitively impaired, and her frequent health problems are preventing the U.S. Senate from confirming President Joe Biden’s extreme left-wing judicial nominees.
Feinstein’s critics already bullied her out of running for reelection in 2024. That’s a good thing. We don’t need a bunch of doddering octogenarians in charge of the world’s most powerful country.
Alas, many of the same people who want Feinstein gone are going to spend the next year and a half insisting that Biden, 80, deserves another term as president.

The American Mind.
Yesterday National Public Radio (NPR) announced that it is leaving Twitter, after the platform “falsely labeled” it as “state-affiliated media.” This is the “the same term it uses for propaganda outlets in Russia, China and other autocratic countries,” the indignant NPR huffed. Twitter CEO Elon Musk had the label changed to “government funded,” but this was still too much for NPR, which claims that—while it does receive government funds—such a label would tarnish its “credibility” and could somehow even “endanger journalists.”
Meanwhile the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) is also throwing a hissy fit over being pasted with the same label, saying it “is, and always has been, independent,” and is merely “funded by the British public.” Also complaining is Voice of America (VOA), which, despite literally being run by an arm of the U.S. federal government, the U.S. Agency for Global Media, claims that, “The label ‘government funded’ is potentially misleading and could be construed as also ‘government-controlled’—which VOA is most certainly not.”
Each outlet claims it maintains “editorial independence” from the state despite receiving government funding, and so doesn’t deserve to be called “state-affiliated.” Regardless of what you think of Musk or Twitter, this is absurd. Let’s leave aside VOA, which was literally founded to conduct information warfare abroad on behalf of the United States, first in WWII and then during the Cold War, and is therefore so obviously state-affiliated that its claims otherwise are not really worth addressing. The BBC and NPR are only marginally less obvious in being state media.

Hedge fund billionaire Ken Griffin is an alumnus of Harvard who is grateful for his education. He has given millions to Harvard. Most recently, he gave an unrestricted gift of $300 million to Harvard’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences. Harvard’s Graduate School of Arts and Sciences is to be renamed in his honor. It’s hard to believe he couldn’t resist the temptation, find a worthier object of his charity, or distinguish between friends and enemies.
One might think that a simple thank-you from Harvard would be in order, but that is not the way of the world in our elite institutions of higher learning. Griffin is also a substantial Republican donor. Griffin’s departure from the party line at Harvard does not go down well with the renaming. Washington Free Beacon.
Transgender professor Deirdre McCloskey backed out of a debate at the University of Pittsburgh with conservative commentator Michael Knowles, despite expressing confidence in winning the debate in the weeks prior.
McCloskey, who identifies as a transgender woman, said the debate with Knowles, originally scheduled for April 18 at the University of Pittsburgh, “would not be a rational debate but a fascist rally,” Campus Reform reported. Knowles announced the change on Tuesday.
“I’ve just learned that Prof. McCloskey has dropped out of our debate scheduled for next week,” Knowles tweeted Tuesday. “For weeks, he’s baselessly smeared me as a ‘fascist’ but nonetheless insisted upon the importance of debating ideas rather than running from them. Apparently he’s changed his mind.”
“It’s telling that even a distinguished scholar with three Harvard degrees and half a dozen honorary doctorates cannot defend transgenderism,” Knowles added. “Of course: The ideology is indefensible.”
McCloskey explained his decision to back out of the debate, saying, “I decided not to participate in giving him a platform” and claiming Knowles is “utterly uninterested in finding the truth.”

The New Republic.
You’ll never guess because the author pulled it out of his ass.
The inflation crisis is over, and you can thank the poorest among us for delivering what (so far at least) is a soft landing. That isn’t the mainstream view yet, but eventually I think it will be.
No, it won’t, because the poor have nothing to do with inflation. Inflation is done by the people with power over the money supply: The government. (Biden and his handlers.)
Timothy Robert Noah (born 1958), an American journalist and author, is a staff writer at The New Republic. Previously he was labor policy editor for Politico, a contributing writer at MSNBC.com, a senior editor of The New Republic assigned to write the biweekly “TRB From Washington” column, and a senior writer at Slate, where for a decade he wrote the “Chatterbox” column. In April 2012, Noah published a book, The Great Divergence, about income inequality in the United States.
No training or expertise in economics, then, but plenty of experience pushing the Narrative.

The United States, under the leadership of President Joe Biden, has launched a hard diplomatic offensive against Hungary, with the U.S. Embassy in Budapest—headed by Ambassador David Pressman—funding a nationwide billboard campaign that seeks to undermine the Hungarian government’s position on the Russo-Ukrainian war.
News of the Washington-financed billboard campaign comes amid dismally poor—and seemingly ever-deteriorating—relations between the two countries and alongside media reports that U.S. Ambassador to Hungary David Pressman, who is holding a press conference this afternoon, April 12th, is expected to announce the U.S.’ plan to take punitive measures against the Hungarian government.
Citing several independent diplomatic sources, the Hungarian opposition news portal 444 wrote that the Biden administration is planning to take new measures in order to punish the Hungarian government for its position on the Russo-Ukrainian war. The news site suggests the sanctions—similar to those leveled against Hungary in 2014—are likely to be imposed on influential people.

Steve Sailer.
About thirty years ago I attended a presentation by an executive at a vast snack and beverage company. She announced that her firm’s goal was to have their delicious sugary and salty products within arm’s reach of every American at all times. Maybe they’d never quite fully succeed, but damn it, they were going to try.
“Uh-oh,” I said to myself. “The future is going to be fatter.”
And so it was.
America, with 42 percent of our population being obese as of 2017–2020, up from 31 percent at the turn of the century, is now the fattest country outside of some beefy Pacific islands. We’re even worse off than traditionally sedentary Muslim cultures like Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Turkey. But the rest of the Anglosphere isn’t too far behind us. Countries that I long associated in my mind with healthy outdoor exercise, such as Australia and New Zealand, are now tipping the scales too.
