Unmarried women without children have been moving toward the Democratic Party for several years, but the 2022 midterms may have been their electoral coming out party as they proved the chief break on the predicted Republican wave. While married men and women as well as unmarried men broke for the GOP, CNN exit polls found that 68% of unmarried women voted for Democrats.
The Supreme Court’s August decision overturning Roe v. Wade was certainly a special factor in the midterms, but longerterm trends show that single, childless women are joining African Americans as the Democrats’ most reliable supporters.
Their power is growing thanks to the demographic winds. The number of never married women has grown from about 20% in 1950 to over 30% in 2022, while the percentage of married women has declined from almost 70% in 1950 to under 50% today. Overall, the percentage of married households with children has declined from 37% in 1976 to 21% today.

The debt ceiling was created during the World War I under the Second Liberty Bond Act of 1917. Prior to establishing the debt ceiling, Congress had to vote to approve each issuance of Treasury bonds, which can be a cumbersome process.
A debt ceiling allows the Treasury Department to issue bonds without having to go through Congress each time until the ceiling is reached. It thus makes the government’s fundraising process more efficient and encourages fiscal responsibility because, in theory, there is a limit on how much the Treasury can borrow.
In reality, however, the debt ceiling has been raised or suspended numerous times since its creation—from $11.5 billion in 1917 to $31.4 trillion as of 2021 (unadjusted for inflation). Over the past decade alone, the debt ceiling was raised or suspended eight times to avoid a government default, leading its critics to question its effectiveness and necessity.

Democrats may have lost control of the House of Representatives, but it appears Republicans are embracing their legacy of so-called diversity and inclusion.
Republican congressman Patrick McHenry (N.C.), now the chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, announced earlier this month that there would be six subcommittees—and all of them will count advancing “diversity and inclusion” as one of their top priorities, according to the committee’s announcement.
With Republicans like these, who needs Democrats?

A Syrian asylum seeker was arrested in the Netherlands on Tuesday on suspicion of acting as one of the Islamic State’s top security chiefs during the terror cell’s infamous rise to power in the Middle East.
The 37-year-old man was arrested in the village of Arkel, approximately 40 kilometers east of Rotterdam, where he had resided since entering the Netherlands and claiming asylum back in 2019.
The suspect is believed to have been in a senior position in the security services of both the Islamic State and, prior to this, Jabhat al-Nusra, another proscribed Salafist jihadist terror group, according to the Dutch Public Prosecution Service (OM).

ZMan’s weekly podcast. Highly recommended.
Ten years ago, if you asked people if the government was involved in manipulating public opinion or leaning on social media companies or spying on presidential candidates, very few people would have agreed. Those who did think this was the case were branded conspiracy theorists. Today, most people just seem to accept that this is now the way things are done in our democracy.
It is hard to know if this is really the case, but the lack of public outrage over the stream of revelations about government pressure on social media companies suggests people are not surprised by it. Maybe most people are still processing it, as no one was raised to think they lived in a police state. Possibly the lack of mainstream coverage lets the public ignore what they would prefer not to face.

The rhetoric of the political left often invokes the name of the common man, but their interest in ordinary people is at best like the ASPCA’s interest in dogs and cats. No one at the ASPCA has ever suggested putting cats and dogs on their board of directors. Running left-wing movements has always been the prerogative of spoiled rich kids.

Republicans enter the debt ceiling fight with no leader, no strategy, and no specific proposal. They face a president who refuses to negotiate, a Democratic Senate, and a hostile media. When the Treasury Department’s “extraordinary measures” to avoid default come to an end this spring, markets are sure to tremble, and business and investors will pressure Congress for a quick fix. If the crisis isn’t handled properly, outcomes include a government shutdown, economic contagion, downgraded U.S. debt, and renewed GOP infighting. Oh, yes—in the worst-case scenario, federal spending would remain uncontrolled.

Seven militants have been arrested and charged with domestic terrorism following a deadly shootout with law enforcement at their “autonomous zone” in a wooded area south of Atlanta. They are all from out of state.
On Wednesday morning, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and other law enforcement agencies conducted a raid on the so-called autonomous zone at the site of the future Atlanta Public Safety Training Center. Since June 2021, Antifa and other far-left extremists from across the US have occupied the area to prevent the construction of what they call a “cop city.” The GBI says a Georgia State Patrol trooper was shot and severely injured during Wednesday’s raid by a man camped in the area. Officers returned fire and killed the gunman, who allegedly used a pistol.

One of the tricks the Clintons popularized for getting around rules and protocols was the sudden collapse in enforcement of the rules and protocols. Instead of violating one specific rule that was hindering them, they would violate all the rules. This way they could blame the system or just unintended errors. This made it hard to see the specific rule they were violating, which made it hard to see the caper. They hid their crimes in an avalanche of sloppiness.
This seems to be what the Bidens were up to when Joe was Vice President. His brother and son wanted to trade access for cash, a common political crime. Influence peddling is probably the second oldest crime. If you can get some important guy to do something or entertain doing something, that has tremendous value, so you sell that ability to people who want to influence the important guy. This is pretty much how all legislation is devised and passed into law in Washington.

California Governor Gavin Newsom refuses to address the hydrocarbon elephant in the room, namely that The End of Oil Would be the End of Civilization as the products manufactured from crude oil played a major role in building the world from one billion to eight billion people in the past 200 years.
With his narrow focus on the useless transition to so-called renewables, no matter what, Newsom is apparently unable to understand that renewables of wind turbines and solar panels cannot manufacture anything.
Today’s dangerous emphasis on wind and solar power for intermittent electricity is creating a lack of products in the future. It is also causing a shortage of fuels for planes, ships, militaries, and space programs, all of which are manufactured from the substance Newsom seems to hate most — oil, that is, black gold, Texas Tea, or petroleum. But Newsom stubbornly refuses to talk about the “products crisis” his energy policies are creating.

Scientists at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and IBM Research have created a virtual library of thousands of “command sentences” for cells using machine learning. These “sentences” are based on combinations of “words” that direct engineered immune cells to find and continuously eliminate cancer cells.
This research, which was recently published in the journal Science, is the first time that advanced computational techniques have been applied to a field that has traditionally progressed through trial-and-error experimentation and the use of pre-existing molecules rather than synthetic ones to engineer cells.
The advance allows scientists to predict which elements – natural or synthesized – they should include in a cell to give it the precise behaviors required to respond effectively to complex diseases.

Institutional momentum continues to build in wealthy parts of the country where blacks were historically least oppressed by slavery and Jim Crow for cashing in white guilt over George Floyd as racial reparations before whites wise up (or cynical Asians and Hispanics take over).
For example, posh Evanston, Illinois (where 91 percent voted for Biden in 2020), has already handed out $25,000 reparation vouchers to sixteen black residents, with The Washington Post complaining that’s not fast enough. And the state of Illinois (Biden 58 percent) is gearing up its African Descent-Citizens Reparations Commission.
Likewise, the state of California (Biden 63 percent) has a Reparations Task Force assigned to come up with a proposed payout to blacks (not that California was ever a slave state), with the chairwoman currently talking about six or even seven figures.

Geraldine Tyler is a 94-year-old woman spending the twilight of her life in retirement, as 94-year-olds typically do. But there isn’t much that’s typical about it.
Tyler has spent the last several years fighting the government from an assisted living facility after falling $2,300 behind on her property taxes. No one disputes that she owed a debt. What is in dispute is if the government acted constitutionally when, to collect that debt, it seized her home, sold it, and kept the profit.
If that sounds like robbery, it’s because, in some sense, it is. But it’s currently legal in at least 12 states across the country, so long as the government is doing the robbing.
Note that this is in a blue state.

With the enormous advances in machine learning over the last few years, it feels like we are now not only on the cusp of big things, but that the world is already a genuinely different place than it was just a little while ago. I mean, how does even just assigning homework work in a world of LLMs?
There’s one product I haven’t seen discussed yet that I’m really looking forward to. I call it the Next button. It’s an app one might install on their computer that can access the keyboard and mouse and which puts just a single button in the system tray. When you click it, the model does whatever it thinks is most useful to do next, conditioned on things like the contents of one’s email accounts, calendar, files on my computer and cloud storage, text messages — ideally, any digital content associated with me.
In the Good Old Days, some computers had a button labelled DWIM, which stood for ‘Do What I Mean’. It didn’t work all that well. But the technology has advanced since then.
