After all, those guns just run around killing people.
If we were going to be ‘honest about guns’ we would ban young black males from possessing firearms.

Attorney General Merrick Garland has just announced the appointment of special counsel Jack Smith.
But Smith’s team will not look into the Biden family quid pro quo syndicate nor its incriminating confessionals on Hunter Biden’s laptop.
Instead, it will further investigate Donald Trump’s possession of presidential records that were hauled off from Mar-a-Lago, as well as his purported role in the January 6 “insurrection.”

Nah, just kidding. Open Threads are for blogs that are interested in conversation. That ain’t this.
This blog is not intended to spark ‘conversations’ among readers. (If it were, I’d have one of those snazzy plug-ins that actually threaded reader responses, rather than just tipping them into a pile.) It exists to be a dumping ground for stuff with which I would otherwise pester my friends. (Note to self: Do rant on ending sentences with a preposition. Also one on using ‘if’ where you ought to use ‘ought’.)(Maybe one on what preposition to use after ‘different’.)
This blog is intended to publicize things that I find interesting, and in passing document some of the more absurd things that the Evil Party are doing to this country. (If you can’t remember the latest thing that a Stupid Democrat Or Worse did, come here and search. You might find it.) You will note a certain imbalance. That is because Stupid People do more Stupid Things than Interesting People do Interesting Things. (Not My Fault.) Or you could just read the Babylon Bee.
Think of it as a political Ted Talk, without the Wokeness and on-stage preening.
You want to make a snarky comment, feel free. You want to call me names, get banned.
Those are the only rules we have. Take whatever action you deem appropriate.

A new government in Italy was elected partly because of promises to do something about the people smuggling from North Africa used corrupt North African governments. Italian gangsters and EU (European Union) countries far from the Mediterranean back NGOs (non-government organizations) which operate boats to take the illegal migrants directly to European (mainly Italian) ports where the migrants are deposited and claim asylum. According to EU rules that means they can stay, often in Italy. This becomes a problem for local Italians who are not prepared to absorb so many migrants, who become an economic burden for Italy and contribute to a rising crime rate.
The new government in Italy refused to allow an NGO “rescue boat” to unload its 230 passengers in Italy. For a while the NGOs were able to land their illegal migrants in Malta, which lies between North Africa and Italy. Malta joined the EU in 2003 and found that EU rules obliged it to accept illegal migrants from North Africa who were picked up by NGO rescue boats and taken to the nearest EU nation where they were they could claim asylum. This was quite a burden for Malta, with a population of only half a million. In contrast Italy has 60 million and France 65 million. In 2015 Malta began refusing to allow the NGO boats to land, so the NGO boats took their passengers to Italy, The EU criticized Malta but did not try to force Malta to accept the illegals. At first Italy went along with accepting the illegals but eventually that became a political issue in Italy and now the NGO boats must take their passengers to France, which protested when 230 illegals were landed at a French port. The NGO boats are sponsored by EU members far from the problem, mainly Norway and Germany. Most EU members would prefer that all these illegals land in Italy, where most of the migrants will stay and become a problem for Italy but not the rest of the EU nations.

The White House has twitted (why hasn’t it yet migrated to Mastodon?) a list of “some talking points when ‘that Uncle’ comes ‘at you’ about @POTUS”. I leave mockery of the substance (and it is eminently mockable) to others. What immediately strikes me is the assumption that “Uncles” (capitalized to emphasize the menace, I suppose, like “The Thing”) are particularly prone to start disruptive arguments at family gatherings.

After several decades, therapeutic cancer vaccines now show signs of efficacy and potential to help patients resistant to other standard-of-care immunotherapies, but they have yet to realize their full potential and expand the oncologic armamentarium. Here, we classify cancer vaccines by what is known of the included antigens, which tumors express those antigens and where the antigens colocalize with antigen-presenting cells, thus delineating predefined vaccines (shared or personalized) and anonymous vaccines (ex vivo or in situ). To expedite clinical development, we highlight the need for accurate immune monitoring of early trials to acknowledge failures and advance the most promising vaccines.

Broadly speaking, the recent electoral tremors have been based on an education split, graduates voting for the status quo, non-graduates seeking to overturn it. In Brexit, 29 of the 30 areas with the highest proportion of graduates voted Remain, while the cohort overall split 57%-43% compared to 48%-52% for the country as a whole. Hilary Clinton won graduates by 11% while losing non-graduates by 7%. By the 2020 election, the gap had widened to 14% and 15% respectively. In the recent French election, there was an almost linear relationship between education level and voting, with President Macron winning the run-off votes of 78% of higher degree-holders, 63% of degree-holders, 53% of those with a baccalaureate, but just 44% of those with no qualifications.
The commentator David Goodhart attempted to explain these data by introducing the notion of “Anywheres” and “Somewheres”. The former are those who do well at school, go to good universities before progressing to well-paying jobs in big cities or overseas. The latter, leaving school with few or no qualifications, find the university route blocked so are forced into low-paying jobs in their hometowns with little or no opportunity for progression. The modern globalised world works for “Anywheres”. It does not for “Somewheres”. To Goodhart, Brexit and the other political upheavals of recent years represent an attempted revolution by a group who finds itself in a world which no longer caters to its needs.

Our elections are an embarrassing third-world mess.
On top of that, there’s no mechanism to test or improve the accuracy of elections. Nobody’s even talking about improving them. And every change that gets implemented makes the system more susceptible to fraud. (Like that wasn’t the whole point.)

The Empire State Building and the World Trade Center make for an interesting comparison. In many ways, they’re similar. They’re both iconic Manhattan skyscrapers (they were built just 3 miles apart) that sit right next to each other in the sequence of “world’s tallest building”. Both started out as projects aimed at creating (among other things) a large amount of commercial office space, and were later nudged by their owners into becoming the world’s tallest building. Both were completed in the midst of a severe economic downturn (the Great Depression and the 1973 Oil Shock, respectively), and took many years to be fully occupied. The Empire State Building would be only partially occupied through the 1930s (making money largely from visitors to the observation deck), and the owners were only saved from bankruptcy because the lender (MetLife) didn’t want the building. It wouldn’t start to turn a profit until after WWII. Similarly, the World Trade Center didn’t reach full occupancy in 1980. In both cases the building owners had to coerce government agencies to use much of the available space.

The recent mass shooting in Colorado Springs is the 601st mass shooting in 2022. There have been four mass shootings since then, but you likely haven’t about them. Ann Coulter.
For more than 50 years, our country has been engaged in systemic discrimination against the nation’s most despised racial group, whites. Recently, the Supreme Court heard cases challenging legal race discrimination in a pair of lawsuits brought against Harvard and the University of North Carolina for their “affirmative action” policies.
Despite the oft-repeated claim that affirmative action “hurts black people the most,” for the past half-century, it’s whites who’ve been bringing lawsuit after lawsuit for being rejected — solely because of their race — from universities (not to mention jobs, promotions, government contracts, scholarships, executive suites, homecoming queens, etc.).
In response, the Supreme Court announced this fundamental principal of constitutional law: Could you guys try hiding what you’re doing a little better?

The common person, equipped with a superb neural system as the result of millions of years of animal evolution, cringes at large structures (i.e. buildings) that communicate a psychological threat. There are sound medical reasons for not ignoring such a negative reaction, since experiencing long-term stress is known to generate pathologies in the body.
The hegemony of the architecture-industrial complex — consisting of building financing, global construction, media-certified “star” architects, real-estate speculators and a machinery of architectural education resolutely stuck in dogma and ideology — crushes public opinion. It has managed to silence the occasional protesting voices for decades.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is now capable of judging what sort of buildings and environments are good for our health and psychological wellbeing. The tests are ridiculously easy to perform. We finally possess a set of powerful tools that are ready to finish off a century of absurdly inhuman architecture.
