There have been a reported 2,000,000 illegal migrants in the recent surges (total illegals here already is certainly a multiple of that but let’s go with the most recent Biden-induced numbers).
Martha’s Vineyard has a population of 15,000.
The USA population is 332,000,000
The Vineyard’s share of new illegals is therefore 90.34.
People may point out that if the richest community in the US cannot handle a little over half of its share of illegals (50), what can the rest of them be expected to do? Blah, blah. Throw in the 26 homeless that comprise our allotted share of the national homeless population if it comes to that. Are we ready to spend to build a compound for 116 people who–let’s be honest–are not our sort at all?

ZMan’s weekly podcast. Highly recommended.
On YouTube there is a genre of video about living off-grid. That is, living in a rural area without electricity, gas, internet and so on. Many, if not most, are fake because most everything is fake these days. Some are legitimate and they make for interesting viewing because it is mostly problem solving. Watching a guy noodle through how to make a tiny hydroelectric system is interesting.

Foldscope combines low-cost materials with precision optics to create inexpensive microscopes that are affordable for communities worldwide. With a magnification of 140X, Foldscope can visualize tiny things like bacteria and microorganisms as well as larger samples like insects, plants, fabrics, and tissues. Foldscope can also attach to mobile phones for imaging. This portable microscope is also waterproof. With that versatility, the possibilities are endless!
If, of course, that’s what you want to do.
I received a microscope kit when I was a child, my parents apparently concluding from the fact that I was worthless at (and even less interested in) sports that I was destined for a Nobel Prize.
I looked at a bug. I looked at a leaf. I looked at the multicolored dots on a comic book illustration. Then I went back to reading. Three degrees later, I still don’t have that Nobel Prize (primarily because I’m even more worthless at math than I am at sports). Still, it was a kind thought.

In his campaign materials, Democrat Josh Riley is a flannel-wearing, beer-drinking, fifth-generation upstate New Yorker with blue-collar values. In real life, Riley spent years at an elite Washington, D.C., law firm and returned upstate just months ago to launch his congressional run.
Riley’s campaign site says the Democrat is “running for Congress to give working families a Square Deal” and touts his upbringing “in a working-class neighborhood” in upstate New York. Riley’s campaign launch video, meanwhile, features the flannel-and-hoodie-clad candidate alongside run-down factories and modest homes. Later in the spot, before clinking a Miller Lite glass in a dimly-lit dive bar, Riley pledges to put himself “back at the kitchen table” with his “neighbors [in] upstate New York and ask what’s best for them.”

A vulnerable Maine Democrat spearheaded an effort to make migrants eligible for his state’s welfare program, a policy that may hurt him at the ballot box in November given that it has resulted in a costly overflow of asylum seekers in the city of Portland.
As a state legislator, Rep. Jared Golden championed a bill in 2015 that declared asylum-seeking immigrants eligible for the state’s General Assistance program, which provides free hotels, meals, and other essentials to elderly and homeless Mainers. As a result, an estimated 1,200 immigrants are now receiving emergency housing in Portland and are unable to work until they receive government approval, a process that can take several months. Portland officials in May informed federal immigration agencies that the city’s hotels reached full capacity and are unable to shelter additional asylum seekers—just as federal funds for the program are set to expire.

John Hinderaker at Power Line.
It is no secret that our federal, state and local governments waste enormous amounts of money. Neither is it a secret that outright fraud accounts for a significant part of that waste. My organization, which conducts quarterly polling in Minnesota, has twice asked the question, “What is your best estimate of the percentage of state spending that is wasted?” The results were identical: the first time, the median answer was 29%. The second time, it was 30%.
Why are Americans so skeptical of government spending? In part, because of scandals like the Feeding Our Future fiasco, which we have written about before, in which hundreds of millions of dollars were funneled to community groups that purported to be feeding ridiculous numbers of poor children. The FBI has been investigating this scandal for some time, but so far the only criminal charge is a passport violation brought against a perpetrator who was trying to flee the country.

I’ve never been blessed enough to vacation on Martha’s Vineyard, but if you’re an illegal alien who’s always dreamed of biking with the Obamas, you might be in luck. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has just sent two planeloads of migrants to the New England paradise.
You’d think the residents of Martha’s Vineyard would be thrilled at the opportunity to increase the diversity of the approximately 80 percent white island. Oddly, there have been reports of elderly women in straw hats and kaftans packing up their “no human is illegal” signs and marking their doors with the blood of slaughtered lambs.

I love books. If I go to the bookstore to check a price, I walk out with three books I probably didn’t know existed beforehand. I buy second-hand books by the bagful at the Friends of the Library sale, while explaining to my wife that it’s for a good cause. Even the smell of books grips me, that faint aroma of earthy vanilla that wafts up at you when you flip a page.
The problem is that my book-buying habit outpaces my ability to read them. This leads to FOMO and occasional pangs of guilt over the unread volumes spilling across my shelves. Sound familiar?
But it’s possible this guilt is entirely misplaced. According to statistician Nassim Nicholas Taleb, these unread volumes represent what he calls an “antilibrary,” and he believes our antilibraries aren’t signs of intellectual failings. Quite the opposite.
Better too many books than too few.

A number of financial institutions in and around New York City are dealing with a rash of super-thin “deep insert” skimming devices designed to fit inside the mouth of an ATM’s card acceptance slot. The card skimmers are paired with tiny pinhole cameras that are cleverly disguised as part of the cash machine. Here’s a look at some of the more sophisticated deep insert skimmer technology that fraud investigators have recently found in the wild.
…
These skimmers do not attempt to siphon chip-card data or transactions, but rather are after the cardholder data still stored in plain text on the magnetic stripe on the back of most payment cards issued to Americans.

The FBI appears content with its role as the enforcement arm of the Democratic Party, somewhat like–although, so far, not as bad as–the role the Ku Klux Klan played years ago. The Mar-a-Lago raid was a low point, but the FBI has followed up with more intimidation tactics. Subpoenas reportedly have been served on dozens of Republicans, apparently fishing for some evidence of a connection to the almost entirely peaceful protest in Washington on January 6, 2021.
The day after Joe Biden’s notorious Nuremberg speech, three armed FBI agents visited the home of a New Jersey woman named Lisa Gallagher. Why? The FBI had an anonymous tip that Gallagher had something to do with the January 6 demonstration. She also had a pro-Trump sign on her lawn.

Joe Biden and Kamala Harris might be the single worst pair of communicators to occupy the White House. Both Joe and Kamala are wedded to teleprompters because he has too much to say and she has nothing to say. Teleprompters are there to keep Joe Biden from telling wildly inappropriate stories about his leg hairs or announcing an impromptu surrender to China, but they’re also there because in her natural state Kamala is incapable of saying anything at all.
Presidents and their veeps are supposed to be a balance of strengths and weaknesses like a good marriage, but instead Biden and Kamala are a bad marriage in which their weaknesses are mirror opposites, but also so far apart that they’re incapable of balancing each other out.
Neither Joe or Kamala have any real skills. They both got to where they are as a combination of political accidents by men who were attracted to their weakness and incompetence.

ZMan tightens the belt.
The American stock exchanges dropped sharply yesterday when it was announced that the inflation reduction act had not reduced inflation. The consumer price index came in higher than expected. This triggered the robots to sell on the expectation that the Federal Reserve will keep tightening the money supply. The DOW dropped 3.94% bringing the decline for the year to 14.4%. Luckily, they have changed the definition of a bear market so this is still a bull market.
The inflation report was all bad news. Gasoline prices declined ten percent, but all other energy increased for the period. That probably means two things. One is the gas price decline is due to less driving. In other words, people are adjusting their spending because inflation is not starting to take a bite out of their budgets. Instead of a weekend car trip, people are staying home. According to AAA, over all sales of gasoline declined in August to levels last seen during the lockdowns.
Another piece of the gasoline puzzle is the dumping of cheap crude on the domestic refineries by the Biden administration. They panicked when gasoline hit five bucks a gallon nationally so they started releasing crude from the SPR. This drives down the price of gasoline a little. The taps run dry at the end of next month, just before the election, so prices will tick back up. In other words, some of the bad news has been pushed out to after the November elections.

On Bastille Day of 2016, a 31-year-old Tunisian named Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel deliberately drove his truck into a crowd of people celebrating France’s national day in Nice. A total of 86 people were killed. The attacker was killed by police. Eight people are currently on trial in Paris, charged with aiding the terrorist.
Today, police in the French town of Auxerre in the Yonne Department arrested a 20-year-old man for disseminating hateful messages on social media against the victims of that attack, and supporting the attack itself.

For much of the 20th century, Los Angeles symbolised the future. Over the course of the century, the population grew 40-fold to nearly four million people.
But now, for the first time in its history, the population of Los Angeles is in decline, falling by 204,000 between July 2020 and July 2021. LA was once a magnet for investors. But recently many of the area’s corporate linchpins – including aerospace giant Northrop Grumman, Occidental Petroleum and Hilton Hotels – have left, taking with them high-paying jobs and philanthropic resources.
