A family dispute in the French city of Lyon took an unfortunate turn today when a young man decapitated his father in a parking lot. It was an “Allahu Akhbar” moment for the youngster, but French citizens were reassured by the police that the youth was not thought to have been radicalized.
They use the term ‘radicalized’ as if it were a disease you could catch, like COVID, or a process that was applied to you, like ‘simonized’. No–it’s a choice to do evil.

The answer to that question is, sometimes. One would think this is clearly such an instance: Minneapolis teachers union contract calls for layoffs of white teachers first. That sounds like naked race discrimination by a government entity, but is it illegal?
Apparently not, in a Blue State.

That costly, boxy bin is among six trash cans hitting San Francisco’s streets this summer in the city’s long saga in search of the perfect can. Overflowing trash cans are a common sight in the Northern California city, along with piles of used clothes, shoes, furniture and other items strewn about on sometimes-impassable sidewalks.
City officials hired a Bay Area industrial firm to custom-design the pricey trash can along with two other prototypes that cost taxpayers $19,000 and $11,000 each. This summer, residents have the opportunity to evaluate them along with three off-the-shelf options added to the pilot program after officials faced criticism.

Why people develop the autoimmune disorder has been a long-standing question. Studies have pointed to certain gene variations and environmental factors. For decades, a common virus called Epstein-Barr virus has also been high on the list of culprits.
Now recent studies paint a clearer picture that Epstein-Barr virus instigates MS when the central nervous system gets caught in the cross hairs of an immune response to the virus’s attack. This recognition opens new options for treatment, or even vaccines. Perhaps therapies that target Epstein-Barr itself — or remove the cells in the body where the virus camps out — could jettison the virus before damage is done.
In modern ‘journalism’, it is somehow mandatory to start off even a ‘news’ story with a bit of narrative, as if the old who-what-when-where-why isn’t enough; we have to have a ‘story’ to anchor it. Everything has to be a narrative. Feh.

FARMERS AROUND THE world have turned to tractor hacking so they can bypass the digital locks that manufacturers impose on their vehicles. Like insulin pump “looping” and iPhone jailbreaking, this allows farmers to modify and repair the expensive equipment that’s vital to their work, the way they could with analog tractors. At the DefCon security conference in Las Vegas on Saturday, the hacker known as Sick Codes is presenting a new jailbreak for John Deere & Co. tractors that allows him to take control of multiple models through their touchscreens.
The only way to make money farming with the few people willing to work the land is by using very expensive computerized equipment (a combine will run you the price of a Range Rover), and that locks you into the eco-system of a single manufacturer (watch Apple turn green with envy). Farmers wouldn’t mind that so much if they could only get manufacturers to provide repair services in a timely manner – if there’s a crop to get in and a storm on the horizon, a two-week backlog of parts doesn’t really help a great deal.
“Farmers prefer the older equipment simply because they want reliability. They don’t want stuff to go wrong at the most important part of the year when they have to pull stuff out of the ground,” Sick Codes says. “So that’s what we should all want too. We want farmers to be able to repair their stuff for when things go wrong, and now that means being able to repair or make decisions about the software in their tractors.”
A perfectly reasonable position.
Facing mounting pressure, John Deere announced in March that it would make more of its repair software available to equipment owners. The company also said at the time that it will release an “enhanced customer solution” next year so customers and mechanics can download and apply official software updates for Deere equipment themselves, rather than having John Deere unilaterally apply the patches remotely or force farmers to bring products to authorized dealerships.
An illustration of what frustrated farmers have to put up with.
John Deere did not respond to WIRED’s request for comment about the research.
Gee, I wonder why?

All told, there are now fewer competitive districts than at any point in the last 52 years. If the good news is that both parties emerged with reasonable opportunities in coming years to win control of a closely divided House, the bad news is that they will fight that battle on the narrowest of terrains under maps artificially engineered to reduce competition.
They say that like it was a bad thing. Competitive districts disfranchise the losers. Let me say that again. Competitive districts disfranchise the losers.
If you are interested in representative democracy at all, the ideal system is to put all of the voters from one side in the same districts, and all of the voters from the other in the same districts. That maximizes the number of people who are represented by the legislator that they agree with. (Oh, sure, politicians make a lot of mouth noise about ‘representing everybody in the district’, but only the simple-minded believe that rot.)
This is why courts are so fond of ruling that State X has to create another majority-minority district: They know that spreading out voters of a particular viewpoint so that they are the lesser number in a district means that they are effectively shut out. We’ve been fighting this fight since the Sixties.
The only people who profit from ‘competitive districts’ are the media outlets who get to report on elections as if they were horse races. “Can the dark-horse candidate come from behind and win? STAY TUNED TO FIND OUT!” That’s why you’ll never read an article in any newspaper or hear any opinion on TV regarding the undoubted virtues of gerrymandering.

A virulently anti-Israel group with an active U.S. presence on Tuesday glorified a top Palestinian terrorist reported to be a commander of the U.S.-designated Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades.
“The Lion of Nablus, Ibrahim Nabulsi was beloved by all in the city, emerging from an early age as one of its foremost defenders and resistance fighters,” said a post on the Palestinian Youth Movement’s (PYM) Facebook page. “Nabulsi gave his life to protect and guard Nablus from zionist [sic] incursion,” the post added, describing him as “a prime example of the sacrifice routinely given by the youth of the city to ensure its continued freedom from the occupation.”

UPDATE: ‘Satanic Verses’ Author Salman Rushdie Attacked at Event in Western New York
Rushdie’s book “The Satanic Verses” has been banned in Iran since 1988, as many Muslims consider it to be blasphemous. A year later, Iran’s late leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issued a fatwa, or edict, calling for Rushdie’s death.
A bounty of over $3 million has also been offered for anyone who kills Rushdie.
Iran’s government has long since distanced itself from Khomeini’s decree, but anti-Rushdie sentiment lingered. In 2012, a semi-official Iranian religious foundation raised the bounty for Rushdie from $2.8 million to $3.3 million.

After the recent annual Conservative Political Action Conference convention in Dallas, CNN published a video with the following headline: “Election deniers take over CPAC after primary victories.” In a recent appearance on CBS, Republican Rep. Paul Kinzinger, R-Ill., who voted to impeach former President Donald Trump and serves on the House Jan. 6 committee, said: “The only thing we need for democracy to survive is the knowledge that you can vote, that that vote counts, and we live with the winner and loser. Twitter continued to crackdown on dissenting political views this week with the permanent suspension of columnist and commentator Paul Sperry. The suspension came down after Sperry allegedly tweeted about the FBI’s raid on Mar-a-Lago. Sperry said that Twitter gave “No warning, no explanation, reason given.” That is a signature for the company, which has little transparency or ability to challenge such private censorship.
Twitter has a long and documented history of suspending those with dissenting political, social, or scientific views, particularly before major elections. Sperry says that he tweeted the following:
Funny, don’t remember the FBI raiding Chappaqua or Whitehaven to find the 33,000 potential classified documents Hillary Clinton deleted. And she was just a former secretary of state, not a former president.
DEVELOPING: Investigators reportedly met back in June w Trump & his lawyers in Mar-a-Lago storage rm to survey docs & things seemed copasetic but then FBI raids weeks later. Speculation on Hill FBI had PERSONAL stake & searching for classified docs related to its #Spygate scandal.
Sperry went on to note that “the current deputy general counsel at Twitter is also the former general counsel at FBI HQ under Comey. His name as you may know is James Baker, and he was the top attorney who reviewed the fraudulent anti-Trump FISA wiretap warrants for probable cause.”
