In general, the name of a Congressional act is the opposite of what will actually happen.
Inflation happens when too much money is chasing too few goods and services. The government’s policies over the last two years have been a perfect recipe for the highest inflation in four decades: trillions of dollars in government spending financed by the Federal Reserve’s printing presses coupled with lockdowns, new regulations, a war on energy, and anti-work programs that drove down supply.
Biden’s $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan Act, a stimulus spending bill in March 2021, proved to be the match that lit the inflationary fire.
Biden and his big-spending allies in Congress are now back for more.

The CHIPS Act, originally designed to provide $52B in incentives for chipmakers to open US plants, has now passed a Senate vote, with bipartisan support. It is expected to pass a House vote as early as next week, but has gained weight in its journey through Congress.
A billion here, a billion there, and pretty soon you’re talking about real money.
Apple lobbied in favor of the original plan, stating that it was vital to the construction of a TSMC plant in Arizona, which is expected to make chips for the Cupertino company …
Well, if Red China invades Taiwan, that chip plant will certainly come in handy. You’ll not that ‘the Cupertino company’ isn’t pushing for something to be built in California.
A cynic might suggest that a much larger pot of money will see funds sent to a greater number of Senate constituencies, allowing senators to boast about how many jobs they’ve created in their state – just in time for the midterms.
Oh, ya think?

We may be seeing one of the terrible side effects of narrative politics. This is the belief that a good story often repeated can change reality. Elites have come to believe that saying it makes it real. This is why they invest so heavily in creating narratives and having them repeated by their media organs. Everything is about messaging rather than objective measures. Team Biden is now selling the story that gas prices are falling at historic rates, despite record high gas prices.
In a world where the people in charge are sure that all they have to do is create a really good story and that story will become true, there is no reason for them to ever reconsider the narrative. Once they commit, they are committed. This means anyone questioning the narrative is an enemy. Public policy ceases to be about trade-offs and is instead about the friend-enemy distinction. Friends repeat the narrative and enemies question the narrative.

Rather an unusual story for a publication called WIRED.
Although the European bison belongs to the same family as the domestic cow, you’d never mistake one for the other. Weighing in at up to a tonne, the bison is one beefy bovine. It has its own mannerisms, too: It scratches against tree trunks, rolls on the ground to take dust baths, and wraps its tongue around almost any vegetation—grass, leaves, branches—to feed.
These traits make the bison a dominating force on its surroundings. It can reshape ecosystems, refurbishing existing habitats and laying foundations for new ones. One rewilding project in Kent hopes to harness the bison’s natural engineering abilities in order to better manage the local woodland and increase its biodiversity, by bringing the herbivorous megafauna to the UK for the first time in thousands of years (and possibly ever).
I love the concept of “Iron Age pigs”.

A culture-enriching rapist in the German city of Neustrelitz was convicted of raping an 11-year-old girl in a park. The young fellow was allegedly sixteen at the time, but like so many recent migrants in Germany, he is thought to be older.

Dozens of former Republican and Democratic officials announced on Wednesday a new national political third party to appeal to millions of voters they say are dismayed with what they see as America’s dysfunctional two-party system.
The new party, called Forward and whose creation was first reported by Reuters, will initially be co-chaired by former Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang and Christine Todd Whitman, the former Republican governor of New Jersey. They hope the party will become a viable alternative to the Republican and Democratic parties that dominate U.S. politics, founding members told Reuters.
This could prove entertaining. I’ve always liked Andrew Yang, and I’ve always disliked Whitman, so I will be paying attention as to how this discomfort with the current UniParty translates into policy. Typically such ‘third parties’ are started by people who aren’t getting what they believe to be Their Fair Share of the political pie, so they have short life-spans; Teddy Roosevelt’s Bull Moose Party, Ross Perot’s Independence Party, and the Dixiecrat party in the late 1940s being the poster children here.
Historically these only survive because one of the two national parties has disintegrated, and the Federalists and Whigs did before the Civil War. Despite gleeful cacklings on the part of activists, I don’t see that happening these days, although the Democrats are skating close to the edge with their embrace of Woke ideology that only a proglodyte could love. But we’ll see.

Conservative leaders are calling on senators to reject the House-passed Respect for Marriage Act, which aims to codify into federal law the Supreme Court’s 2015 legalization of same-sex marriage in Obergefell v. Hodges.
“The Act, which was suddenly rushed through the House without any public hearings or input, is an attack on millions of Americans, particularly people of faith, who believe marriage is between one man and one woman,” wrote more than 80 conservative leaders, along with the legal advocacy group Alliance Defending Freedom, in a letter Tuesday to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.
The letter writers believe the bill would threaten the religious freedom rights of individuals and groups across the nation if it becomes law.
Over half of the states have amended their constitutions to provide that marriage is only between one man and one woman. Ineffective under the Supreme Court’s Obergefell decision, these would come back into effect if that decision were overturned, as the various abortion-limiting laws still on the books sprang back into life once Roe was overturned.

Ever since Stonewall, formerly known as a gay rights organisation, decided to focus on trans rights at the expense of all others, anyone articulating a reasonable objection to this change of direction has been subject to abuse, threats, and even loss of livelihood. The charity’s activists have effectively forced big corporations, public bodies and independent employers to write policies on diversity and inclusion which put trans ideology above all else.
But the barrister and lesbian Allison Bailey may have put a stop to this. Yesterday’s ruling in her case Bailey v Stonewall and Garden Court Chambers found that she had been victimised and discriminated against by her employer for expressing gender critical beliefs. Such was the oppressiveness of Garden Court’s actions against her, she was awarded aggravated damages: £22,000. These are only granted where a discriminator’s actions are particularly unnecessary, high-handed or oppressive.

Cocoa flavanols have previously been found to lower blood pressure and arterial stiffness as much as some blood pressure medication. However, how effective flavanols are in everyday life in reducing blood pressure has remained unknown, as previous studies in this area have been performed in tightly controlled experimental settings.
Surrey’s new research reduces concerns that cocoa as a treatment for raised blood pressure could pose health risks by decreasing blood pressure when it is not raised, paving the way for it to be potentially used in clinical practice.

It’s a witch-hunt show trial. Is anybody supposed to take it seriously?
The question all along was the extent to which the public’s views of Donald Trump’s effort to stay president would be changed by the committee’s work. Might the committee be able to convince non-Democrats of Trump’s culpability for the worst elements of that day? Could it persuade Republicans to see Trump’s efforts as unacceptable?
Not without proof, proof that was never presented.
New polling from CNN, conducted by SSRS, suggests that views of Trump within his party have eroded a bit since the hearings began. Overall, though, many Republicans don’t see Trump as having done anything wrong — and a plurality still somehow believe the purported predicate for Trump’s objections, that there’s solid evidence the 2020 election was stolen.
Gee, I wonder why?

A group of 45 self-proclaimed “Republicans” rolled out by Democratic senator Mark Kelly’s (Ariz.) reelection campaign to showcase his bipartisan appeal is filled with Democratic donors.
A Washington Free Beacon review of FEC filings dating back to 2016 found that three-quarters of the roughly $300,000 in federal political donations made by “Republicans for Kelly” members went to Democrat-endorsed candidates and Democratic-aligned PACs. Less than a quarter of contributions went to Republicans, with most GOP donations coming from a single couple. The majority of the donations to Republicans were directed to politicians who supported efforts to remove former president Donald Trump from office.

On Wednesday hundreds of followers of the hardline Iraqi Shia cleric, militia leader, and politician Muqtada al-Sadr overwhelmed security in Baghdad’s Green Zone, where they were able to breach and storm the country’s parliament building.
The protests came amid political friction which pits al-Sadr’s bloc, which won a majority as the largest faction in the 329-seat parliament during prior October elections, against the pro-Iran Coordination Framework faction. The latter group’s nomination for prime minister, Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, is being fiercely opposed by al-Sadr’s followers.

I set up a fake dog that barks if my surveillance cameras are triggered while I’m out of town on vacation. It’s a pair of computer speakers plugged into a Raspberry Pi, which is an inexpensive single-board computer. One speaker faces the front door and the other faces the side door.
When the front door camera is triggered my surveillance camera system sends a message to the Raspberry Pi. A simple program plays an audio clip of a big dog barking through the side speaker and then the front speaker. The change in speakers simulates a dog moving towards the front door. The opposite happens if the side door camera is triggered.

ZMan turns over a rock.
Given that we live in an age of universal deceit, at least by those in positions of authority, the evolution of lying suddenly matters a great deal. Part of it is that we are better able to see the lying of the people in charge. Before the mass media age, it was hard for people to get information on official lies. Of course, it was also much harder to promote official lies. Mass media results in a sense of mass cooperation, which means the communications revolution has revolutionized mass lying.
Even adjusting for our natural recency bias, institutional lying has exploded over the last thirty years in America. Every day someone from the government stands in front of cameras and blatantly lies about things. They know they are lying. The people in the press room know they are lying. Everyone in the room knows that the people watching it know everyone involved is lying. There is the sense that the people in these positions look at lying as a game where the biggest liar wins the day.
This is not a new thing. For twenty years the drug companies have said that serotonin levels are responsible for depression. It turns out to be wrong and the studies they relied upon were obviously wrong. In other words, they should have known their claims were false, but they had a billion reasons to lie, so they lied. This sort of deception has become the norm.

After two years of unprecedented government tyranny in the name of fighting a virus, the prime instigators of this infamy are walking free, writing books, and openly pretending they never said the things they clearly said over and over.
Take Trump’s White House Covid response coordinator Deborah Birx, for example. She was, as the Brownstone Institute’s Jeffrey Tucker points out in a recent article, the principal architect of the disastrous “lockdown” policy that destroyed more lives than Covid itself. Birx knew that locking a country down in response to a virus was a radical move that would never be endorsed.
So, as she admits in her new book, she lied about it.

Are Democrats trying to incite an insurrection? The party’s rhetoric on the “existential threat” of so-called climate change has grown increasingly radical and vitriolic of late, its policy solutions alarmingly anti-democratic in nature. Given the way some Democratic politicians have implicitly endorsed subversive tactics to enact their controversial agenda, one can’t help but wonder why outraged liberal voters aren’t storming the U.S. Capitol building at this very moment.
“This is our last chance to prevent the most catastrophic—and costly—effects of climate change,” Sen. Ron Wyden (D., Ore.) told the New York Times earlier this month. “We can’t come back in another decade and forestall hundreds of billions—if not trillions—in economic damage and undo the inevitable human toll … failure really is not an option here.”
