Vincent Chin is the Asian Emmett Till.
Of course, being the Asian Emmett Till is a little like being the Asian LeBron James. In case you are wondering, going back through the last ten years, the Times has mentioned “Vincent Chin” 24 times but “Emmett Till” 433 times.
What about black-on-white racist hate crimes, such as the Zebra Murders in Northern California in the 1970s in which Nation of Islam offshoot Death Angels murdered at least 15 (and perhaps as many as 60 or more) random whites? Looking for Zebra Murder/s or Zebra Killing/s, I find two mentions in the New York Times over the last decade. Why would the Newspaper of Record want to mention a local police blotter triviality like that when there are always late-breaking Emmett Till newsflashes?

Freeberg nails it.
I can’t think of a worse political opinion to have, than one that has recently prevailed right before everything got worse, with demonstrable and definable lines of cause-and-effect between what you wanted done & what got worse. One should expect even the faintest desire to have a good opinion, would inspire serious introspection. If not “I can see my idea wasn’t good,” then at the very least, “I can see my idea was open to misinterpretation in ways I did not foresee.” There should be some kind of learning…
But in American politics, we often don’t get that. Instead, the constant shelter of the bad-idea-people, the architects of pain, is some running narrative about nuance and complexity. Oh no, just because I wanted to get rid of Trump, doesn’t mean I’m pro-Biden, Oh no, just because I’m pro-Biden doesn’t mean I hold him blameless for the high gas prices. Oh no, just because I hold Biden blameless for high gas prices, doesn’t mean I want them to be high. Oh no, just because I want gas prices to be high, doesn’t mean I want the economy to sputter. Oh no, just because I want the economy to be wrecked, doesn’t mean I hate people. Oh no…you misunderstand…

The Boston Globe’s Jeff Jacoby has written a valuable and scrupulously detailed column exploring the handiwork of BDS Boston in “A roadmap for Jew-haters.” You may not have heard much about the roadmap. The news would have been blasted around the world and repeated for days on end if some American minority group other than Jews were the subject of the map. The derangement it manifests is familiar to Power Line readers and yet the baldness here is shocking.

ZMan turns over a rock.
If you were to go back in time to the 1980’s, scoop up a group of conservatives and show them this post from the National Conservatives, those retro-conservatives would be very confused. For starters. they would be puzzled as to why such a thing was even necessary in 2022. Surely by this late date everyone would know the general framework of the American Right. More important, it would be the general framework of the nation, given the trajectory of the conservative movement.
Once the present situation in America was explained to them, they would no doubt want to know what went wrong? Was there a horrible calamity that derailed conservatives and sent the nation reeling into authoritarian degeneracy? Did the Left stage a revolt and seize the country by force? Did we lose the Cold War? At this point, the room would fall silent as none of the signatories of that post could provide a coherent explanation for why things have gone so horribly wrong.

Lindsey Kornick at Fox News reports that Joy Reid and others in the liberal media orbit found another reason to rage against Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis: when South African-born billionaire Elon Musk suggested he could support DeSantis for president in 2024, DeSantis said while he’s primarily focused on the 2022 gubernatorial election, he welcomes “support from African-Americans.”
Scott Adams is fond of saying that DeSantis has ‘Trump-level’ genius in communicating.

There’s a flag for nearly everything left-wing nowadays, and now the newly Biden-mandated federal holiday “Juneteenth” has one of its own. Vox reports the flag has been around since the 1990s, but of course, no one cared until now, as the left pushes the faux holiday upon all Americans.

ZMan does some anthropology.
Whether it is getting the gang symbols tattooed on your face, wearing an unofficial uniform or committing yourself to a way of life, every cause requires something from the members as a payment. This sacrifice is not only a signal to the other members, showing their shared commitment to the cause, it is also a form of advertising to potential members of the cause. More important, it adds a sense of value to membership in the cause. The members feel committed.
The people displaying their pronouns in their e-mail signature and social media profile are signaling their commitment by sacrificing some portion of their dignity. There is a noticeable discomfort in these people then they say “I go by they/them” because they know what they are doing is foolish. It is as ridiculous as wearing a flowerpot on their head, but that is the point of the ritual. They are making a fool of themselves in public as a way to show their commitment to this cause.
The same thing is at play when white people take to the stage and begin hectoring their fellow white people about racism. It is patently absurd for a white person to stand up and condemn their ancestors for being white or for the crime of having created a culture that is now called white supremacy. Some of what drives this is mental illness, for sure, and some is the “my fellow white people” act. Much of it, however, is the need for the adherent to show their faith by committing an act of lunacy.
Wokery As A Cult does make a certain degree of sense.

On Monday’s The Lead, host Jake Tapper was the first on CNN to admit that former Florida Health Department website operator Rebekah Jones was found to have fabricated her claims that state officials with ties to Republican Governor Ron DeSantis pressured her to manipulate COVID data, according to an investigation by the Health Department’s inspector general. But even with this revelation, Tapper failed to apologize for how he and the “facts first” network helped to elevate the lies and disinformation. “In our health lead now, ‘insufficient evidence,’ that’s what a new inspector general report says it found in response to Rebekah Jones’ accusations she was asked to falsify COVID data on Florida’s dashboard,” Tapper announced before handing the actual reporting to national correspondent Kristen Holmes; instead of going off on one of his infamous, self-righteous diatribes.

With periods of extended dryness and water curtailments occurring more frequently due to climate change, growers in California’s Central Valley — one of the most productive agricultural regions on the planet — are increasingly looking to fallow fields or uproot orchards and vineyards for lack of irrigation. Once gathered into towering pyres, the vegetation is then set ablaze, sending lung- and heart-aggravating haze across the valley.
San Joaquin Valley air regulators have struggled for nearly 20 years to outlaw the practice of agricultural burning, encouraging farmers instead to grind up forsaken crops in wood chippers and spread them as mulch. But amid a third year of drought, some fear a resurgence in large-scale burning because it’s cheaper than grinding, and because so many acres are being abandoned due to drought.
Already, 395,000 acres of farmland have been fallowed across California because of the drought, according to UC Merced research. Industry groups estimate 60,000 acres of almond trees and 15,000 acres of vineyards will be removed statewide this year as well.
“If you’re not able to get water, then you’re gonna have a lot of dry stuff that’s potentially going to die. And then what’s gonna happen with that waste?” asked Catherine Garoupa White, executive director of the Central Valley Air Quality Coalition. “It’s easier to just strike a match and light it on fire.”

Linguistic inflation is analogous to economic inflation, but it concerns a devaluation in meaning rather than price.
Inflation lies behind the popular use of such words as genius, epic, awesome, totally, and incredible. What they mean is often more modest than their traditional senses suggest: genius means clever, epic is impressive, incredible is surprising. Such is our need to imbue our words with force and significance, that we use hyperbole to entice people to pay attention – and the hyperbolic terms gradually normalise.
Say we’re sharing a link on the internet. Can we trust people to heed us if we say it’s “pretty good” or “rather interesting”? These intensifiers, which Orin examined last week, will seem mild in the midst of phrases like “insanely amazing” (which Google tells me has been applied to hair extensions and cheese dip recipes). So more people begin inflating their own lexical choices. Eventually the exaggerated forms become mundane.
The problem is the intersection of rampant narcissism and what might be called an evolving ‘attention society’. Status and remuneration flow toward those whose strident cries of ‘Look at me! Look at me!’ are most successful, therefore all the incentives are aligned toward ‘turning it up to eleven’.

The prototype “particle beam cannon” recently completed by Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Modern Physics may sound like science fiction, but it is a novel new technology that promises to recycle dangerous waste produced by a nuclear reactor. A product of China’s huge investment in advanced nuclear-energy systems, the breakthrough could move the country toward energy independence and further cement its global leadership in climate-friendly technology.
In a typical fission reactor, atoms of heavy isotopes such as uranium-235 are broken apart, releasing energy. The process also releases extra neutrons, which collide with other atoms and break them apart in a chain reaction. The broken atoms are spent fuel that is cooled for a few years and then carefully stored for a few centuries. But a proposed new type of reactor built with this “cannon”—formally, a proton accelerator—could recycle this spent fuel, making it cheaper and safer to generate electricity.

What happens when the workforce no longer wants to work? We’re about to find out. As with all cultural sea changes, macro statistics don’t tell the full story. The sea change is better illuminated by anecdotal evidence: workers constantly quitting to take better jobs; zero loyalty to corporate employers; workers cutting hours from full-time to part-time; workers going out for lunch and never coming back; workers giving up on selling sugar-water for the rest of their lives (echoing Steve Jobs’ famous challenge to John Scully: “Do you want to sell sugared water for the rest of your life? Or do you want to come with me and change the world?”) and giving up on owning an insanely over-valued house.
Workers may sell sugar-water but their hearts are no longer in it. Some are interested in changing the world, and others are interested in changing their own lives as the means to change the world.

Jihadist militants imprisoned in the United States are receiving cash and legal assistance from a website similar to Facebook that connects them with terrorist sympathizers and publicizes their location, including “GPS-coordinated satellite imagery of the facilities at which the inmates are held,” according to a watchdog group.

Can you have bread and circuses without the bread? A group of rabid lefties want to find out. James Martin, CEO of Martin’s, whose potato rolls are popular in both supermarkets and restaurants, supports a conservative candidate for Pennsylvania governor. So, according to The Washington Post on Sunday, Martin’s must be destroyed.
Apparently Martin, his wife, and his daughter donated money to GOP gubernatorial nominee Doug Mastriano. Mastriano is a Pennsylvania state senator, a retired army colonel, and a Trump supporter.
The most notable person to boycott was author and chef J. Kenji Lopez-Alt, known for not only having a large YouTube following and public presence but for banning MAGA hat-wearing customers from his restaurant, San Mateo Eatery, in 2019, saying the MAGA hat was “Same as if you come in wearing a swastika, white hood, or any other symbol of intolerance and hate.” (How does he feel about Che Guevara tee shirts?) Although this is a British story, the U.S. is infected with the same disease.
the same: a minor politician, surrounded by half a dozen beaming activists, thrilled at spending 5 minutes in the company of the Junior Minister for Potholes and Verges. “Residents agreed it was time to get on with the job,” they tweet, in a giddy flurry — wisely skirting over the twenty doors slammed in their faces, and the woman who set her Dobermann on them. Can having the seat of your trousers sewn back on be claimed on expenses?
Regardless of party, the image is universal. The gauchely held placards, the rictus grins. One or two people looking very serious indeed: elect Fleur de Rozarieux, your Lib Dem candidate for Abbyvale Ward — stop Brexit now. (Fleur will make herself available to help residents at all times, in between completing her A-Levels.) Labour activists follow the same blueprint, but with more colourful hair. And the promise of far greater influence over the Gaza Strip.
It’s hard not to wonder, as the various machines splutter into campaign mode for yet another election, what possesses a subsection of our fellow citizens to devote so much time to pushing leaflets through letterboxes — in exchange for little more than a selfie with Oliver Dowden, or a brief, stolen glimpse of Angela Rayner uncrossing her legs.
Maybe AOC will make you a cup of coffee and demonstrate her qualifications for being in Congress.
The young people who fall into party politics are not joining something, therefore, but escaping. They are on the run: from school or university; from their home lives; from personal disappointment; from themselves. They insert themselves into an esoteric and largely hidden fraternity, where nutty proclamations and whacky behaviour are met not just with acceptance but prestige. I asked a friend, who spent much of their youth submersed in left-wing politics, what they thought motivated their young comrades. “Oh mental illness,” came the response.
