Having been coached by Snopes to scope out the different angles that might portray the president in a more flattering light, I have checked out a few views of the intervention of the Easter bunny in Biden’s conversation yesterday on the White House lawn. Each angle confirms that White House staff do not trust the president to wing it and that he does not take their supervision amiss. He dutifully follows the lead of his minders who know him best. What a message.

ProPublica, the left-wing journalism nonprofit bankrolled by billionaires, appears to have violated its ethics policy when it hosted an event last week sponsored by the white-shoe consulting firm McKinsey & Company.
ProPublica says it does not “accept sponsorship of news applications, series, or other targeted sections of our website from any participant in the industry or sector covered within that section of the site.” Yet the April 12 event—”The Billionaire Playbook,” an evening chat with reporters about how the world’s richest people ostensibly evade taxes—was sponsored by McKinsey, a firm that provides many of these people with corporate consulting and has been the subject of many ProPublica reports.

Of all the hilarious freakouts over Elon Musk’s bid to buy Twitter, my personal favorite comes from journalism professor and self-styled “NYC insider” Jeff Jarvis (as noticed by The Spectator‘s Bill Zeiser last week). Jarvis tweeted — and I quote — “Today on Twitter feels like the last evening in a Berlin nightclub at the twilight of Weimar Germany.”
One imagines Mehdi Hasan and Molly Jong-Fast manically jazz-dancing as the Bruenigs belt out a song from a cabaret stage. And surely nothing calls down the specter of fascist totalitarianism quite like Musk’s pledge to end Big Tech censorship. Because that’s what the Nazis did, right? They kicked down the door to the nightclub, stormed through the horrified crowd, and barked, “ATTENTION PLEASE! YOU ARE NOW FREE TO SAY WHATEVER THE HELL YOU WANT!”
Jarvis’s tweet should have been a regrettable one-off. But of course it wasn’t. This is Twitter, after all. Thus did several users spend the start of a perfectly lovely Easter weekend debating whether the dark night of fascism was about to descend by means of looser content moderation. And while the analogy is obviously insane, there’s a point to be made about style here too. Because the thing about elite Twitter is that it actually makes Weimar look pretty good by comparison.
Jeff Jarvis is a Professor of Journalism at NYU. Now you know why they are the way they are.
Jarvis is also a fan of Habermas, which tells you pretty much all you need to know. (Frankfurt School? Where have I heard that before?)

When Roland Barthes wrote his 1967 essay “The Death of the Author,” he probably didn’t intend that, fifty-five years later, a major American news outlet would be provocatively suggesting that the world’s bestselling author should be de-personed, de-platformed or de-materialized from history. And yet that is exactly what has happened with the New York Times. They recently ran a series of advertisements on the subway featuring a reader named “Lianna” who is, as much of their subscriber base now are, “breaking the binary,” experiencing “queer love in color” and meditating on “heritage in rich cues.”
So far, so predictable. But the ads took a grimmer turn when one suggested that Lianna was “imagining Harry Potter without its creator.” This example of what the Times calls “independent journalism for an independent life” has taken up one of the most disquieting contemporary developments in the culture wars, as the newspaper has shamelessly monetized it for promotional purposes. Ever since J.K. Rowling wrote a long, thoughtful essay in June 2020 to explain her views on gender-identity issues, she has been a hate figure of almost comical proportions to the woke. And now, the Times’s advertisement has given succor, even encouragement, to those who despise her opinions.
Under the Narrative, either you are on board with the totality of Wokeness, or you are one of the enemy. There is no grey area, no nuance, no middle ground.

For the vast majority of Americans, the IRS already knows what we owe in taxes. Instead of telling us, though, the IRS tasks us with filling out a slew of complicated forms and doing a bunch of arithmetic, which drives many people to tax-prep services.
Government regulation invariably leads to a complicated and burdensome web of restrictions and requirements. This, in turn, creates a service industry of ‘experts’ devoted to helping people to cope with that burden. This, in turn, motivates that industry to impede any attempt to make that burden any lighter and easier to navigate without the help of the ‘experts’. It also motivates the businesses in that industry to lobby their favorite politicians to preserve, and if possible extend, the scope of the regulatory burden so as to provide further business opportunities for the existing service industry players. The ordinary citizen invariably winds up with more stress and a much lighter wallet.

Small, deployable nuclear reactors, an idea that the United States military has been experimenting with for decades, will receive new life under a program the Defense Department announced Thursday.
And unlike previous efforts to deploy alternatives to diesel and other fossil-fuel generators, which were stalled by high costs and little political support, this new effort may succeed in helping the military, and eventually commercial energy providers, wean themselves off carbon-intensive power. As one expert explained, while the physics haven’t changed, increasing concerns about the geopolitics of fossil fuels coupled with growing concerns about climate change have made the effort more critical.
Imagine the fights when localities try to set up one of these and the NIMBY/EcoNazi crowd attempt to regulate it to death:
But a number of nuclear scientists and watchdogs have questioned the need for such a device. In recent years, they have publishing scathing reports, commentary and analyses about the potential contamination should the reactor or its fuel be damaged during an attack, stolen or experience a catastrophic failure.
“Not only have my concerns not been alleviated, they’ve actually grown,” Professor Alan J. Kuperman told Military Times.

“Don’t teach kids what to think, teach them how to think.” There is some truth to this. Any decent teacher knows that if a student arrives at an answer by themselves, instead of simply being given it, there is a better chance they’ll remember it. Students have the right to develop their own opinions, and should be offered tools to aid critical thinking.
But is this warm, cuddly mantra as profound as it appears? In their new book Dumbing Down, economist Magnus Henrekson and political scientist Johan Wennström assess the decline of Swedish education in the context of its starry-eyed departure from classical knowledge to the realms of “post-truth” schooling.

California has always been like a trendy nightclub that can get away with a hefty cover charge because everyone wants in. I once asked Arthur Laffer, of the famous curve, how California could keep getting away with such a high cover charge—i.e., high taxes and crushing regulation—when virtually no other state could get away with it. I was expecting a technical economic term—”exploitable asymmetries”—that is, the great climate and abundant natural beauty that many people are willing to pay a premium to enjoy (like me), but no. Instead, he said, “That’s like asking why pretty girls are mean. Answer: Because they can.”
But maybe California can’t any more. Even the pretty mean girls age, and start to show wrinkles, gray hair, and such. The Census data showing more middle class people leaving California than coming in reminds of the old Yogi Berra line about a popular New York restaurant: “Nobody goes there any more; it got too crowded.”

Washington DC has just received its fourth busload of ‘undocumented’ migrants from Texas – a ‘special delivery’ from Texas Gov. Greg Abbott that contained roughly 10 passengers, according to Fox News.
The buses are being sent by dint of an order from Abbott imposed earlier this month week tasking the Texas Division of Emergency Management with providing charter buses or flights to transport illegal immigrants released into the US by the Feds over to Washington DC.
Greg Abbot has got my vote.
While some in the media have questioned the legality of Gov. Abbott’s order, it’s worth remembering that transportation of illegal migrants from one state to another part of the country isn’t new or unique. In fact, as has been widely reported, the federal government has been transporting thousands of migrants across the country to different states via bus and plane as part of a plan that was initially kept quiet until the whistle was blown by the media.
What’s more, as even MSNBC acknowledges, the trips to Washington DC are “completely voluntary”.

Scott Adams (on his Locals podcast COFFEE WITH SCOTT ADAMS, which I highly recommend) points out that the reason Twitter has power in this world is that it has both Left and Right arguing with each other. If one side went away, it would just be one side talking to themselves and it would fail. (This is why the various right-wing alternatives to Twitter never succeed; nobody from the Left ever goes there, or ever will go there, so there is no chance of it ever having power.) This is why the Elon Musk thing is seen as such a threat — Mommeee! Billy hit me back!
Why do ‘right-wing’ people fight so hard not to Get Canceled on Twitter? Because they want to be on Twitter so badly that they’ll fight to be there, even when they are being regularly and routinely abused. It reminds me of the classic story of the guy whose job was shoveling up elephant shit all day. When somebody suggested that he go into another line of work, he responed ‘What? And give up show business?’ If this kind of ‘show business’ is so important to you that you are willing to spend your days shoveling up elephant shit, THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH YOU>
This is psychotic. Twitter (in its present form) is an stage for left-wing people to abuse right-wing people; the right-wing people are necessary for this process because their Role In Life is to serve as whipping-boys for the proglodytes. The same can be said of alleged ‘conservatives’ who accept invitations to appear on networks like CNN and MSNBC when everybody and his dog knows that the only reason for such an invitation is that it provides the Usual Suspects with a target for abuse. Why put up with that? A character defect is the only reason I can think of.
Conservatives, stop using Twitter. If you did, it would die, and yet another arena for the Left to abuse their natural victims would cease to exist. You have the key to Hell in your own hands; leave whenever you decide to do so. That’s all it takes.

I think one of the great misconceptions about economic crisis is that solutions are always dependent on centralized government action. In truth, most financial disasters are actually caused by too much government action and involvement. Central banks like the Federal Reserve are also primary culprits; as I outlined in last week’s article their machinations, which are independent of government oversight, fall into the category of deliberate sabotage. The Fed bankrolls corruption through fiat money creation while government officials and corporations utilize that money to wreak havoc on our living standards.

It is amazing. Certain politically pregnant phrases are repeated nearly verbatim, over and over by a multitude of pundits, politicians, news anchors, podcasters, talk show hosts, etc. It’s as if they’re all reading from the same script. (They are.) The worst of these is the declaration of a “threat to our democracy.” It’s as if this is the definitive, final, word. Except that they all must say it, just in case it didn’t quite take in first time. Just in case we didn’t hear it. Just in case someone, aghast, challenged the idea of it, declared it not just unoriginal, but also just plain wrong.
Challenge is an ugly thing. It is “a threat to our democracy!”

he central bank of France has covertly repatriated 221 tonnes of gold between 2013 and 2016. Since then, all its monetary gold is stored in La Souterraine in Paris. Repatriating all gold is related to France’s aim to revamp Paris as a gold trading center.
They used to keep their gold in New York just in case the Soviets invaded Western Europe. I guess that’s no longer a concern.

Greg Pulles was the long-time general counsel of TCF Financial Corporation. (I worked for Greg in that capacity for 12 years.) Greg is something of a Renaissance man, however, in dogged pursuit of truth, beauty, and the American way. Most recently, Greg undertook the review of all 2020 and 2021 Minnesota death certificates which bear the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) code for COVID-19 (U07.1).
Having reviewed all 10,903 such certificates, Greg’s analysis supports the conclusion that the vast majority of Minnesotans was not at serious risk of death from COVID-19 and that the campaign of fear and intimidation was simply wrong. Greg’s viral Alpha News column setting forth his analysis is “Who died of COVID-19 in Minnesota?” Subhead: “Only 291, or 2.67% of the 10,903 certificates we examined, were ‘COVID only’ with no comorbidity listed.”

Shoulda burned a Bible instead. Nobody could possibly object to that.
