I doubt that it would work, because in the modern world nobody believes in that level of commitment.
Trump would actually do it, so he could threaten to do it and people would believe him. But I doubt that it would work for the current government of Taiwan. (It would be different if they were Japanese, of course.)

This year, the Biden administration joined many in the United States in criticizing the mass disqualification of 583 candidates in Iran by the Guardian Council. The Iranian elections (like elections in other countries like China and Venezuela) are democratic only in the most artificial sense: You can freely vote from a pre-selected list of candidates.
Electoral disqualification systems are generally anathema to democratic values, but some in the United States are now toying with the idea for the 2022 or 2024 elections. While more modest than the Iranian model, the Democratic calls for disqualification are just as dangerous. What is most maddening is that this anti-democratic effort is cloaked in democratic doublespeak.

The World’s Best Rice comes in a sturdy, gold-embossed box containing six slender packages. Sold for ¥10,800 for 840 grams (that’s $95 for less than 2 pounds), it’s nearly 30 times more expensive than what you’d pay at a supermarket in Japan. The Guinness World Records named it the priciest rice on the planet in 2016. Japan’s rice milling and processing giant Toyo Rice Corporation, which sells the product mainly to well-to-do customers in Japan, the United States, and Singapore, commands the princely sum by blending several of the top-placed finalists chosen by judges in a blind tasting of the International Contest on Rice Taste Evaluation, the country’s most prestigious rice competition, which takes place each November. The winning batches are stored in temperature-controlled rooms for at least six months before the kernels are milled to remove the tawny outer bran—but never the ultrathin umami layer around the starchy core. The price is justified, Toyo Rice officials say, because you simply won’t find better-tasting short-grain white rice anywhere.
If that’s all you have to eat, you tend to focus on it.

ZMan takes a long view.
Interestingly, the administrative state in modern liberal democracies looks and acts much like the bureaucracy that evolved with the Soviet system. Both were driven by ideology and both were designed to micromanage the life of the people. The fascist systems that sprung up in the interwar years showed the signs of developing an administrative state as well. Like communism and liberal democracy, fascism embraced the rational management of society.
The other not so obvious similarity between liberal democracy and communism is their respective administrative states evolved as a response to democracy. Running a country where everyone has a say can only be done if the overwhelming majority are saying the same thing. Therefore, a primary duty of the state is to train people to hold the same beliefs, to share the same common sense. The administrative state is as much about promoting ideology as administration.

Love to see what the incandescent Marvin Gaye would make of these times. We are hitting a new fever pitch of tension and craziness. Schools are doing virtual or remote “learning”; parents are at their wit’s end on how they are supposed to cope with children at home and work. Children continue to be deprived of a real education, are being terrified for no reason, forced to hide their faces behind masks, being vaccinated against a virus which is a non-existent threat to them. People are getting tested for having cold symptoms and are isolating and quarantining pointlessly. We are pushing people past the breaking point.
So here is the question. How long are you going to take this crap? When are you going to tell the politicians and the public health experts and the teachers’ unions and all the others who won’t let go of their obsession with this epidemic that enough is enough. How many children have to literally go crazy or commit suicide or overdose on drugs? How many lives ruined is enough for the teachers’ union? It is clear these people have no principles, no shame, no courage, no convictions, only politics and self-interest.

On the cusp of an absolute glut of liberal-media anniversary coverage of the January 6 riot, CNN media reporter Brian Stelter was cranky. “We live in a world where Donald Trump’s top supporters malign the media for being ‘obsessed’ with January 6.”
You don’t have to be a Trump supporter to see it. The media obsession with January 6 is easily quantifiable. Saying there’s not an obsession is like claiming the media didn’t do enough coverage of Princess Di’s car crash and funeral. The New York Times editorial board posted an article titled “Every Day Is Jan. 6 Now,” and the daily media coverage reflects that mentality.
Sounds like a theme.

The ruling Assad clan has been making visible, and some less public, moves to demonstrate their efforts to curb Iranian activity in Syria. There is a lot of that in Syria and not all of it has anything to do with the Assads. Iran does not, and never did, share details of all its operations in Syria with the Assad government. That was how the Iranians operated and the Assads were expected to accept that. The Assads are now attempting the difficult, and often fatal, act of leaving a partnership with Iran.

The true agenda of what has become known as the “transgender movement” is to abolish sex, according to author and self-declared feminist Kara Dansky.
Dansky, author of the new book “The Abolition of Sex: How the ‘Transgender’ Agenda Harms Women and Girls,” not only takes issue with the objective to destroy the concept of sex, but also with the use of the term “transgender.”
The term “transgender” was invented, but the “word has no coherent meaning whatsoever,” Dansky says, adding that “every single person on the face of the planet, all 8 billion of us, are either female or male, and that’s it.”

The Biden administration appears to be heading in the direction of waging a two-front Cold War over Ukraine in Eastern Europe and Taiwan in East Asia, both of which could turn “hot” any day. The imprudence of such an approach should be obvious, but the great danger is that such “crises” could get out of hand before the leaders involved step back from the brink.
The problem with Trump no longer being President is that the ‘invade the world, invite the world’ people are back in charge. If for no other reason, this inclines me to vote for him again (if he runs).

Men are just so much more nostalgic and loyal to their heroes than women are to their heroines. Some guy in Uruguay watched Die Hard when he was 13 and now he’ll pay via Video-On-Demand to see an action movie in which a 65 year old Bruce Willis appears for nine minutes.
Do any actresses generate that kind of loyalty among women? Maybe Bette Davis long ago … My father always complained about my mother dragging him to Bette Davis movies. But I don’t recall my mother being that much of a Bette Davis die-hard.

America has a huge “Fake Indian” problem. It’s hard to know exactly how many people, often white leftists, falsely claim to be descended from the nation’s early Indian population, but census numbers show either a massive population boom or a sharp growth in fake Indians.
According to the 2010 census, there were 2.9 million American Indians and Alaskans, and another 2.3 million who claimed to be a combination of Indians and another race or races.
The 2020 census however shows that 3.7 million claimed to be American Indians or Alaskans, and another 5.9 million described themselves as part Indian.
I rather like the term ‘Pretendian’.

April 16 is Emancipation Day in Washington, D.C. The holiday commemorates the date in 1862 when President Abraham Lincoln signed the District of Columbia Compensated Emancipation Act, freeing 3,000 slaves in the D.C. area. It has been celebrated in the nation’s capital since 2005.
Because the April 16 holiday this year falls on a Saturday, it will officially be observed on the closest weekday – Friday, April 15 – closing city and federal offices in D.C. That means the tax day deadline is getting pushed back to Monday, April 18 for everyone except residents of Maine and Massachusetts. Residents in those states must file by April 19 since April 18 is Patriots’ Day.

Blue rhetoric toward Red America—unquestionably the target of the above outburst—has been unrelentingly punitive since at least 2015, and increasingly so in recent months. As one illustration, when offered the opportunity to “walk back” the above statement, the White House doubled down, and its media allies followed suit. Clearly, they’re committed to this kind of talk.

ZMan, who is not fluent in French.
One of the iron laws of the universe is that whatever the America Left is warning about is usually something they are plotting. Alternatively, whatever they are accusing others of doing is something they have already done. The Russian collusion stuff is the most recent example of this. They accused Trump of plotting with a foreign government, the Russians, but we learned it was official Washington all mobbed up with the Ukrainians, Chinese and anyone else with extra cash.
Of course, for the last year the ruling class has been yammering about the insurrection and the ongoing threat to “our” democracy. Meanwhile, they have been dragging people off to secret dungeons, harassing citizens for their politics, throwing people off social media and all the things we associate with a thug regime. Go back further and they spent four years claiming the 2016 election was rigged and then committed massive election fraud in the 2020 election.
This is how you can discern the future in regime rhetoric. Regime-ology, like Kremlinology in the Cold War, is becoming a skill in this age. You read the regime organs like the Washington Post or New York Times not for the literal content, but for the esoteric content, the stuff between the lines. In order to be prepared for what they will do next, we have all been forced to be Straussian. Of course, we also have the opposite rule of liberalism to guide us.

What is the greatest danger in 2022? Global warming? Inflation? The pandemic? A major war? My answer is the tyranny of the thought police — because, without the ability to engage in free thought and discussion, solutions to the other problems are unlikely to be found.
The tyranny of the thought police caused the impoverishment and loss of basic liberties of billions of people who were — and many still are — under the yoke of communist leaders for decades. It is a basic characteristic of mankind to try to control the speech and thoughts of others. Those who voluntarily sign on to religious orders or organizations such as the communist party agree to abide by the group’s rules. If people have a choice as to what to believe and say, and when they find themselves in disagreement with the other members or leadership of the group, and if they can voluntarily resign, there is no problem.
But what happens if people find themselves as members of a group without their free consent, and the penalties for disagreement or withdrawal are severe? When Martin Luther expressed his very public disagreement with the Catholic hierarchy, in part, by nailing 95 Theses to the church door in Wittenberg, Germany, in 1517, he set in motion what would become the Reformation, whose unintended effect was a series of civil wars which ultimately claimed the lives of a third of the population in some parts of Europe.

Joel Kotkin is not afraid to ask the interesting questions.
Over the past several decades, the progressive Left has successfully fulfilled Antonio Gramsci’s famed admonition of a “long march through the institutions”. In almost every Western country, its adherents now dominate the education system, media, cultural institutions, and financial behemoths.
But what do they have to show for it? Not as much as they might have expected. Rather than a Bolshevik-style assumption of power, there’s every chance this institutional triumph will not produce an enduring political victory, let alone substantially change public opinion.

Lately, in the last couple years especially, there has been a surge of fact checking services. Instagram and Facebook use these services to warn users of “misinformation” and “falsehoods”, and many other media cite these services as credible sources. For a long while, these warnings on IG and FB were of little matter to me and sometimes they would even pop up on completely irrelevant posts that the algorithms would detect as “misinformation” to my amusement. However something I saw recently finally tipped me over the edge.
I saw Dr. Peter A. McCullough speak on Joe Rogan’s Podcast and so I went to his Wikipedia page to see what his credentials were, and to see a general summary of his work. First two sentences are a quite basic, innocent summary of the man, however the third sentence (which also shows up in the little information box when you search his name on Google) is where things take a turn for the worse. The third sentence reads: “During the COVID-19 pandemic, McCullough promoted misinformation about COVID-19, the COVID-19 vaccine, and COVID-19 treatments.” Now, they cite 3 sources for these claims, and I have gone through all 3 of these in detail. The first 2 are not quite as egregious (and maybe even sinister) as the 3rd one1 so I will be focusing on that to make my point. The first claim of his that they analyze is “Once an individual recovers from Covid-19, they have robust, complete and durable immunity with a negligible risk of ever getting Covid-19 again.” Their so-called debunk of this claim quotes the WHO “The World Health Organization (WHO) states that infected people without symptoms can still transmit the virus.” Notice how these statements have absolutely nothing to do with each other, McCullough is discussing recovered individuals, and WHO currently infected individuals. Coming from the world’s oldest news agency calling this negligence would be underplaying their malice. This is an obvious attack on a scientist nonetheless in order to discredit him and his knowledge.

Increasingly, I’ve been alarmed at the number of people in my own circle who wear their symbols of fear: the mask. They are all smart women, rational under most life circumstances, but refuse to let go of wearing their masks. It is like a comfort blanket, even an amulet, that will protect them from the evil forces of COVID. No matter how much information they receive on the minimal protection that masks provide, they persist. My biggest concern is that these people are living in a hyper condition of fear, and they don’t even recognize it. It’s also interesting that they will sacrifice wearing their masks in certain circumstances. I wanted to explore whether prolonging the donning of masks, which could be practiced for the foreseeable future, might have a permanent negative effect on their well-being. The news does not suggest a bright future.

The sudden spread of carjackings has cast a net of fear over the Twin Cities. The Star Tribune explored it in the page-one story yesterday by David Chanen: “Carjackings sweep through Twin Cities communities.” Subhead: “Police struggle to keep with the latest crime trend.” In the paper’s hard copy, the headline asked: “Who is stealing so many vehicles?” It answered in the subhead: “Carjacking surge is blamed on armed teens who seize, ditch cars for a quick thrill.”
Chanen purports to be interested in the perpetrators’ demographics. The carjackers are identified as teenage boys. So far as I have been able to tell from video and from the few who have been apprehended so far, the perpetrators have been black. Yet Chanen studiously avoids any mention of race. It is taboo in this context — more taboo than public reference to sex in Victorian England. I wrote our friend Howard Root to ask if he noticed the omission of race from Chanen’s story and, if so, what he made of it.

A mere three days later, Scientific American—or more precisely, the zombie clickbait rag that now flaunts that name—published a shameful hit-piece, smearing Wilson for his “racist ideas” without, incredibly, so much as a single quote from Wilson, or any other attempt to substantiate its libel (see also this response by Jerry Coyne). SciAm‘s Pravda-like attack included the following extraordinary sentence, which I thought worthy of Alan Sokal’s Social Text hoax:
The so-called normal distribution of statistics assumes that there are default humans who serve as the standard that the rest of us can be accurately measured against.
There are intellectually honest people who don’t know what the normal distribution is. There are no intellectually honest people who, not knowing what it is, figure that it must be something racist.
Scientific American has been a Woke Narrative Media rag for some time now.

Yesterday, I had to take an antibody test in order to get into the studio in Austin. The good news is that my natural immunity from my last round of COVID is robust – with IgA and even IgM Antibodies present.
This brings me again to one of my biggest issues with the public policy response. Natural immunity equals or trumps immunity from the genetic vaccines, because the natural immune response is broad (against the all 29 proteins of the SAVS-CoV-2 virus) and appears to hold up better against Omicron. This sustained and robust natural immunity also applies to children. We all know it. Why won’t our government and the main stream media admit it?
Why is it that the CDC website that lists 146 million people having already had COVID-19 in the USA has not been updated since October 2, 2021? A quick, back of the napkin calculation projects at least another 20-30 million have had COVID since then. Bringing the number of people who have had COVID to around 170 million. Well over half the people in the USA.
They never will, so long as Big Pharma holds their purse strings. KA-CHING!
