ZMan’s weekly podcast revisits an old favorite. Highly recommended.

When you read the work product of the academy, the thing you see right away is much of it is nonsense busy work. These are people with no useful skills and nothing to do so they fritter away their time in a game of make believe. They imagine themselves as academic and intellectuals. Their specialty is basically a hobby of their own creation, which is an offshoot of their mentor’s hobby. You could eliminate the social science and humanities and no one outside the academy would notice.

The other thing you notice about these nonsense fields is the struggle to apply these boutique theories to anything resembling reality. Queer studies makes perfect sense within the extremely narrow scope of academic queerness. Outside of that narrow scope it makes no sense whatsoever. Much of what is produced in these pseudo-intellectual fields – that is a generous description – is a desperate attempt to apply these crackpot theories to real world situations.

Killer Lesbians: British Couple Sentenced to Prison in Death of Toddler Daughter

17th December 2021

The Other McCain does the reporting that American media won’t do.

In October, we told you about New York City cop Yvonne Wu, accused of shooting to death her ex-girlfriend and wounding the ex’s new girlfriend. Then in November, we told you about Pennsylvania couple Marie Snyder and Echo Butler, accused of murdering Snyder’s two young daughters. The Killer Lesbian phenomenon continues this month with news from Yorkshire, England.

You understand that I’m not implying that all lesbians are murderers, nor even that lesbians are more likely than heterosexual women to commit murder. My point is that media bias is such that journalists will never use the words “lesbian” and “murder” in the same story, unless a lesbian is a victim of murder. The belief that journalists must always act the part of publicity agents for the “LGBTQ community,” results in a one-sided portrayal of gay life — everything’s wonderful and everybody’s happy under the rainbow flag — which is just unrealistic. So when I get a story like this (and thanks to the regular reader who emailed me the tip), it’s my duty to give it an appropriate headline, for the sake of balance.

Marginalized and Underserved

17th December 2021

Read it.

I know quite a few retired people who are “comfortable,” maybe even have one or two million dollars to leave their kids after a LIFETIME of work, saving, and investing. I know ONE person who has several tens of millions of dollars. And not a one of those people has any real political power, despite being white and well-off.

Not a one of those people, even the multimillionaire, could afford to give half a BILLION dollars (pocket change for Zuckerberg) to distort the election returns. Even though I bet a forensic audit would turn up well over half of Zuckerberg’s donation was just stolen. Good. Who’s keeping track of five hundred million dollars without dipping in?

Setting aside the butcher paper over the windows at vote-counting time, and the sudden giant leap of late-breaking machine votes ONLY for Biden, and the “toilet malfunction” in Atlanta, just having half a billion dollars to do whatever is claimed they did legitimately to “get out the vote” is a horrendous amount of power wielded by one homely, expressionless dweeb. Not to worry about his half-billion, he has $134 billion MORE. There’s somebody firmly on the INSIDE of those elusive goldarned margins.

D.C. Bar Goes fo Bat for Convicted Anti-Trump Felon

17th December 2021

Read it.

Kevin ( “Viva la Resistance!”) Clinesmith is the convicted felon who radically altered a document in the Trump-Russia investigation to justify spying on an American citizen. At the time, Clinesmith was an assistant general counsel at the FBI.

In order to receive court approval for surveillance of Carter Page, Clinesmith took a document that said Page WAS a CIA source and altered it say Page WAS NOT a CIA source. He then submitted the fake document to the federal court to support obtaining a FISA warrant that would enable the FBI to spy not just on Page but quite possibly on the Trump campaign for which he had worked.

It is hard to imagine a more blatant fraud on the court. Perpetuating that fraud should have meant an end to Clinesmith’s legal career or at least a lengthy cessation of it.

However, fraud on the court in service of “La Resistance” to Donald Trump doesn’t bother the left-wing D.C. bar one bit. It has restored Clinesmith as a member in “good standing” of the District of Columbia Bar Association — this despite the fact that he has yet to finish serving out his probation as a convicted felon.

San Francisco Mayor Finally Blasts “All the Bulls**t That’s Destroyed” the City, Demands More Money For Cops

17th December 2021

Read it.

After Black Lives Matter protesters last year demanded that cities “Defund the Police,” San Francisco Mayor London Breed held a press conference to announce that her city would be one of the first to do exactly that. Breed announced $120 million in cuts to the budgets of both San Francisco’s police and sheriff’s departments. A spokesperson for the police officers’ union warned the cuts “could impact our ability to respond to emergencies,” but the police chief assured the public that the cuts “will not diminish our ability to provide essential services.”

Yesterday, Breed reversed herself in dramatic fashion, announcing that she was making an emergency request to the city’s Board of Supervisors for more money for the police to support a crackdown on crime, including open air drug dealing, car break-ins, and retail theft. The plan contains much of what the California Peace Coalition, which Environmental Progress and I cofounded last spring, has been demanding, including in a series of protests by parents of homeless addicts, parents of children killed by fentanyl, and recovering addicts.

More Dangerous Americans

17th December 2021

Read it.

Four people were arrested in NYC for burning and looting an Applebee’s restaurant.

Just kidding. We know that sort of thing is tolerated under the New Justice System. Heck, the Vice President of the United States contributed to a bail fund for violent rioters and that wasn’t a deal-breaker, even for people who work within the Justice System. No, the actual crime they were arrested for was protesting the city’s Vaccine Passport requirement.

Artificial Photosynthesis Turns CO2 Into Sustainable Fuel

16th December 2021

Read it.

At Dimensional Energy, the method involves a reactor that houses a proprietary nanocatalyst material that effectively replaces the plant components that facilitate natural photosynthesis. Inside the reactor, the nanocatalyst and CO2 are exposed to sunlight and water, allowing the CO2 and water to break apart and reform into organic compounds called hydrocarbons, which can be used to make jet fuel.

The 60-day trial was a success, demonstrating not only that the technology works, but also that it could soon be cost competitive with traditional fuels.

We’ll find out.

Democrats Are Destroying Public Schools. Republicans Should Help Them.

16th December 2021

Read it.

During the pandemic, millions of upper middle class white parents experienced for the first time the high quality education that minority public students had been receiving for generations.

The Left smears this as systemic racism, but the only systemic thing is the sheer amount of money and effort that suburban parents put into maintaining schools that fail to meet the basic educational standards of virtually every previous generation, but still give their children a future.

What if There Were No Hypothetical Questions?

16th December 2021

Read it.

Democrats generally gain support by imagining what would happen if hypothetical conservatives were to win hypothetical control. They don’t talk about real conservatives or real elections. For good reason. “The Handmaid’s Tale” may seem a bit over the top, but there are people who believe that the Brett Kavanaugh Supreme Court nomination led us inexorably to such a fate. The governing principle of modern American conservatism is individual liberty and the pursuit of happiness. But still, Democrats believe that what Sen. Mitch McConnell really wants is a return to slavery, like Alabama in 1825. Why do Democrats promote such absurd fears?

Because the real ones are less scary: “A Trump presidency is an extinction-level event for democracy. Imagine the agony of being happy, healthy, wealthy, and free. My God. Vote Democrat, and you won’t have to screw up your life — we’ll do it for you!” Absolutely no one (who does not have a Ph.D.) will vote for that. So Democrats are forced to make stuff up, based on hypothetical possibilities that have never happened and make no sense. Which seems silly. But what else can they do?

The Democracy Panic

16th December 2021

Read it.

All at once, progressives are wailing that an “anti-democratic” movement poses a serious threat to the United States. David Leonhardt of the New York Times averred last Monday that, “An anti-democratic movement, inspired by Donald Trump but much larger than him, is making significant progress” and “has encountered surprisingly little opposition”. A writer in The Atlantic informs his readers that “Trump has built the first American mass political movement in the past century that is ready to fight by any means necessary, including bloodshed, for its cause.”

ABC Rediscovers Afghanistan Crisis, Ignores Americans Still Trapped

16th December 2021

Read it.

On Tuesday, the State Department and the White House drew scrutiny after they disclosed that there were still Americans and legal residents trapped in Afghanistan over three months after President Biden abandoned them there. Yet on Wednesday, when ABC was the only network to cover the ongoing humanitarian crisis there, they failed to mention those Americans.

ABC originally ignored the Tuesday discloser. And as NewsBusters reported, World News Tonight, along with CBS Evening News and NBC Nightly News, spent a combined four minutes and six seconds covering holiday shipping and carrier deadlines.

US Drug Agents Ramp Up Fentanyl Counterattack on Chinese Mainland (as DEA Faces Its Own Troubles at Home)

16th December 2021

Read it.

U.S. drug agents are expanding operations in China – six years after America’s largest trading partner and global rival emerged as the main source of chemicals used to make highly lethal fentanyl. It’s now claiming 65,000 American lives a year.

The small crew of about a dozen Drug Enforcement Administration agents, including those in new outposts in Shanghai and Guangzhou, is nearly double the number in 2018. They face what seems like mission impossible: collaborating with Chinese agents to try to bust traffickers hidden somewhere in a sprawling export supply chain that’s linked to 160,000 companies.

“It’s such a massive chemical industry, and then there are layer upon layer of traders, brokers and freight forwarders,” says Russ Holske, the DEA’s director for the Far East, who set up the new offices in China before he retired. “It’s a daunting challenge.”

Divesting in Crude Oil Guarantees Shortages and Inflation

16th December 2021

Read it.

President Biden continues to do everything possible within his executive powers to restrict the domestic supply of crude oil, even though it’s inconceivable that we would divest away from crude oil, just because 2 of the products manufactured from crude oil are gasoline and diesel fuels for the short-range and light-weight equipment like cars and trucks.

As environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors climb up the agenda there is a lost reality that the primary usage of crude oil is NOT for the generation of electricity, but to manufacture derivatives and fuels which are the ingredients of everything needed by economies and lifestyles to exist and prosper.

Deadly Delays in Treatment

15th December 2021

Read it.

Amid the fear, I’m surprised that we haven’t heard more about two drugs that could make COVID-19 much less of a threat.

In blind tests, Pfizer’s Paxlovid was found to reduce the risk of hospitalization and death by 89%! It was so effective that Pfizer was advised to stop the tests.

“They halted the clinical trials!” exclaims Michael Cannon, director of health policy at the Cato Institute in my new video.

“They decided it would be unethical (not to give the drug to people in the control group.) But if it’s unethical to deny them the drug, it’s unethical to deny the American public that drug!”

Excellent point. Yet that’s what the Food and Drug Administration is doing. They force us to wait until they’re sure all drugs “meet the agency’s rigorous standards.”

How long might they delay?

“If the FDA is following its current practice,” says Cannon, “it’ll be a matter of months.”

Months is an improvement over the 10 years it usually takes the FDA. During the pandemic, the FDA loosened regulations to get some medicines to people faster.

“(But) we’re still losing thousands of lives unnecessarily,” complains Cannon.

What’s a life or two lost, compared to Following The Rules?

The New Segregation

15th December 2021

ZMan does some sociology.

Walk around in public and it is increasingly obvious that Americans now live in at least two parallel worlds. For the bare-faced, the masked are a strange and alien people who are starting to fade into the scenery. The weirdness of these people strapping amulets to their faces has faded and it is now just something to be ignored, along with the person wearing the amulet. In fact, the weird collection of beliefs that lie behind the bizarre face-gear are also fading into obscurity.

The mask is no longer about following directions, complying with authority, concerns over public health and so on. It is about membership in a parallel universe that occupies the same physical space as this universe. If you want to know what segregation in the South was really like, go to a grocery store. Jim Crow was mostly two groups of people operating under mostly the same rules but living psychologically apart from one another in the same public spaces.

A Virginia Democrat who railed against school choice on the campaign trail failed to report that she once was president of a private high school or that her daughter attends a private middle school.

Rep. Elaine Luria (D., Va.) slammed charter schools and voucher programs during her 2018 campaign, saying they pull funding from public schools. But Virginia corporation filings show Luria served as the president of Tidewater Montessori High School, Inc. in Norfolk, Va., from at least 2015 to 2019. Luria did not list her position on her 2018 and 2019 financial disclosure forms, a violation of House Ethics rules. Her daughter attends a Montessori school in Norfolk that can cost more than $12,000 per year.

The New Dark Ages

15th December 2021

Joel Kotkin.

If ignorance is bliss, the Western world should be ecstatic. Even as colleges churn out degrees and collect fees, and technology makes information instantly accessible, the basic level of literacy, as measured by such things as reading books and acquainting oneself with the past, is in a precipitous decline. Rather than building a vital world with our technological culture, we are repeating the memes of feudal times, driven by illiteracy, bias and a rejection of the West’s past.

Over half of American adults have a reading level below the equivalent of sixth-grade level (11- to 12-year-olds), and book reading outside of school or work among the young in particular has declined markedly. A survey conducted in 2014 found slightly over half of American children saying they liked to read books ‘for fun’, down from 60 per cent in 2010. This is not just an American trend. A landmark study by University College London tracked 11,000 children born in 2000 up to age 14 and found that only one in 10 ever did any reading in their spare time as teenagers. The Covid-related lockdowns, notes one recent UN study, raised the number of children experiencing reading difficulties from 460million to 584million.

Why Not A $118 Minimum Wage?

15th December 2021

Read it.

Here we go again. The latest scheduled round of minimum-wage increases, to $15 per hour ($14 for small companies), starts Jan. 1. It hasn’t even gone into effect, yet calls are going out for a $18 wage. Why not $28? Or $58? Or $118?

Joe Sanberg, identified by the Sacramento Bee as a “Los Angeles anti-poverty activist and entrepreneur,” is working to put on the November 2022 ballot an initiative that would boost the minimum wage to $18 by 2025. Actually, a real, “anti-poverty activist” is anyone who favors America’s free-market system that has produced all the wealth in this country, including that used to help the poor.

How to Build a Low-tech Solar Panel?

14th December 2021

Read it.

George Cove, a forgotten solar power pioneer, may have built a highly efficient photovoltaic panel 40 years before Bell Labs engineers invented silicon cells. If proven to work, his design could lead to less complex and more sustainable solar panels.

Nice Neighborhood, Except for the Houses

Why are the most attractive urban residential areas the ones that were built decades or even centuries ago?

If It’s All About Public Safety…

14th December 2021

Read it.

Imagine this scenario: In response to rising crime, retail gang theft, and outbreaks of violence at concerts and sporting events; a Government decree went out declaring that entry to shopping centers and public events would be denied to anyone who did not have a Government-issued “Crime Passport” confirming that they had no criminal history. Air travel would also be denied to those who did not have a “Crime Passport,” in the interest of protecting the safety of air travelers.

Explain to me why this would be wrong, but the “Vaccine Passports” being mandated in urban areas like Philadelphia are OK.

I like it. It has texture, and scope.

Free Beacon Alum Triggers Fragile Libs Into Canceling Subscriptions to the Atlantic

14th December 2021

Read it.

Dozens of fragile libs have canceled their subscriptions to the Atlantic after the storied media outlet published a guest column by Washington Free Beacon alum Matthew Walther.

The libs were triggered by Walther’s suggestion that “outside the world inhabited by the professional and managerial classes in a handful of major metropolitan areas, many, if not most, Americans are leading their lives as if COVID is over.” As anticipated, the professional and managerial classes seethed with rage on Twitter, aghast at the Atlantic for daring to publish Walther’s “nihilistic, genocidal” opinion.

Tesla’s High-Beam Assist Feature Surprised by Swedish Moose

14th December 2021

Read it.

The moose was visible because the car’s high-beam assist feature, which determines when it’s safe to use high beam without dazzling oncoming traffic, had decided to activate high beam.

But the system suddenly disengaged high beam and switched to low beam, for no obvious reason. There was no oncoming traffic and the system shouldn’t react to the reflective markings since they’ve been visible by the side of the road all along.

Right when high beam is needed the most, the car switches to low beam. And it keeps switching, as you can see in the clip.

Hammer tech.

It’s Like “The Purge”: Murder Records Are Being Shattered All Over America, And Next Year Could Be Even Worse

14th December 2021

Read it.

t is often said that life imitates art, and these days that is particularly true on the mean streets of our major cities. Violent criminals just keep getting more brazen, and murder rates are soaring all over the nation. As you will see below, one official in Los Angeles is actually comparing what is now happening to a horror movie that came out a number of years ago called “The Purge”.

But in that movie, violent criminals only had one night each year to run wild. Unfortunately, in America today they are running wild every single night.

Where Are You Going?

14th December 2021

Read it.

Flying cars are still the stuff of Jetsonian dreams, but self-driving cars are already here. But these semi-autonomous vehicles come with a host of issues. For instance, they must be able to deal with the erratic driving behaviors of humans, as well as unexpected obstacles on the road, such as a wild deer crossing the highway. But a critical though lesser discussed problem associated with self-driving cars involves surveillance. These vehicles look likely to be used as surveillance tools, closely monitoring our every move. Worse still, China, a country that has expanded mass surveillance and integrated it into every part of Chinese life, is leading the self-driving revolution.

“Self-driving cars will represent a new mode for surveillance,” says Luis F. Alvarez León, an assistant professor of geography at Dartmouth College, New Hampshire. “Through a self-driving car’s global positioning, system, navigational tools, and other data collection mechanisms, companies will be able to gain access to highly contextual data about passengers’ habits, routines, movements, and preferences.” According to León, whose research interests center around “the geographic, political, and regulatory dimensions of the informational and digital economy,” driverless vehicles provide companies with veritable treasure chests of “personal, locational, and financial data.” In turn, such data can be instantly leveraged and mercilessly monetized.
