Whenever the Narrative Media uses the code-phrase ‘dog whistle’, prepare for them to attempt to persuade you that something means other than what it actually says. Somehow these purported ‘dog-whistles’ are perceptible only by BadWhites and the supreme intellects that write for the Narrative Media. Isn’t that amazing?
Remember: When you hear the dog-whistle, you’re the dog.

Politico is upset.
The only people who benefit from ‘swing districts’ are the Narrative Media, who need the political ‘horse race’ in other to garner the attention that is the cornerstone of their business model.
An elected representative doesn’t (popular mythology to the contrary notwithstanding) everybody in that district; he (or she) (or it) only ‘represents’ the people who voted for that representative. (Mouths make noises but we all know the truth.) So the more people vote for a winning candidate, the greater the portion of the electorate is actually ‘represented’ by that candidate.
It is therefore obvious that so-called ‘gerrymandering’ promotes effective democracy, rather than being the moral failing that the Chattering Class would have you believe. Ideally, districts ought to be arranged so that the winning candidate gets as close to 100% as possible. That’s actual democracy in action.
So the next time an outlet like Politico complains about ‘gerrymandering’, know that they are consulting their wallets rather than some abstract principle of good-government.

Rare mass protests have hit a large central Iranian city over persisting water shortages and continued economic woes which is fast creating a humanitarian crisis as farmers are losing their crops.
Thousands gathered in central Isfahan, outraged over government mismanagement which has allowed a key river to dry up completely. “Footage broadcast by state television and dozens of videos circulating on social media on Friday showed a sea of farmers and other people standing on a huge barren strip of dirt where the major Zayandeh Rud River used to flow, near the iconic Khaju Bridge in Isfahan province,” Al Jazeera reports.

One day, when sufficient distance has been gained from the Current Year to permit sober reflection on our own era, the recent past will no doubt be seen as a watershed in American political history. The election of Barack Obama in 2008 gave politics a religious sheen for Millennials just coming of age, and for Boomers hoping to avoid confronting the wreckage left in the wake of their rule. The election of Donald Trump in 2016 gave the new religion its devil. From Russia collusion to #MeToo, from Covington Catholic to Judge Kavanaugh, American culture and politics in the years since has been an unbroken series of witch crazes, lynch mobs, and human sacrifices (some successfully carried out, others not). The Democratic Party, the corporate press, and progressive activists openly embraced political violence as a means to achieve policy goals, block political appointments, and now, to attempt to affect court decisions.
Conservatives have compromised, cowered, negotiated, and denied in the face of the Left’s radicalization, but 2020 was the year when the Right finally began to realize it was backed up against a wall.

Paul Mirengoff at Power Line.
To leftists and the prosecutors who did their bidding, Kyle Rittenhouse’s offense wasn’t any of the things he was charged with. He clearly had an unassailable defense to all of the charges against him. But that didn’t matter because Rittenhouse was guilty of something else — showing up armed at a leftist riot or, as the left called it, “vigilantism.”
As the left and the prosecution see it, Rittenhouse never should have gone to Kenosha. Once there, he shouldn’t have defended property from the rioters. And having done that, he certainly shouldn’t have left the property and entered the street. Indeed, the prosecution saw fit to show the jury that the group defending the property was warned by the mob not to enter the street.
When those charged with ensuring public order and defending people’s lives and property, the essential first duty of a government, refuse to act, the citizenry have the right (and some would say the obligation) to act for themselves. Unless people can go about their daily business in confidence that they won’t be assaulted or robbed, society disintegrates, and we wind up with government by criminal gangs — as Mexico and other Latin American countries make clear.

Moving from the subtle, at worst, to the gross, at best, we learn from former University of Pennsylvania trustee Peter Levy writing in the Wall Street Journal that after Biden left the vice presidency in 2017, Penn created the Biden Center for Diplomacy and Global Engagement and appointed Biden to the bespoke position of Benjamin Franklin Presidential Practice Professor. Penn paid Professor Biden $371,159 in 2017 and $540,484 in 2018 and early 2019 before Professor Biden retired from teaching and launched his presidential campaign.
In short, Penn paid Biden nearly a cool million over two years for the privilege of associating his name with Benjamin Franklin and the university. Professor Biden served “a vaguely defined role that involved no regular classes and around a dozen public appearances on campus, mostly in big, ticketed events” (here Levy was quoting the Philadelphia Inquirer story reporting the arrangement).
In other words, it was pretty much the same sort of ‘n0-show’ job that Michelle Obama got when her hubby was elected to the state legislature.

On Thursday, a federal judge ruled that a lawsuit filed by a Texas woman whose home was destroyed by a SWAT team may move forward. This is a first step toward holding the city of McKinney accountable for destroying Vicki Baker’s home.
“The court recognized that the city of McKinney is not exempt from the Constitution,” said IJ Attorney Jeffrey Redfern. “This is the first step towards Vicki getting her due, but it’s a big one. The government must compensate individuals when it deliberately destroys their property.”
…
In July 2020, police were pursuing a fugitive who decided to hide out in a home that was listed for sale in the Dallas suburb of McKinney. That home belonged to Vicki Baker. After a lengthy standoff, the SWAT team stormed the home, shattering windows, setting off tear-gas grenades, tearing down doors and destroying the fence. The home was in ruins and Vicki’s daughter’s dog was left deaf and blind from the explosions.
Vicki had renovated the house and it was under contract to be sold. The SWAT team left it uninhabitable; every window was destroyed, and she had to hire a hazmat team to dispose of what was left inside. All in all, it was over $50,000 worth of damage. Upon seeing the destruction that occurred, the potential buyer backed out, Vicki’s insurance company did not cover most of the expenses and the city offered no remedy to her.

Before HTML/XML, database design and informatics were necessary skills to have or understand to work in libraries, there was a crucial requirement to obtain a job: mastery of library hand. Library hand, a specific style of handwriting, was once a highly-sought and praised manner of lettering and spacing and a requirement for many eager to enter the field.
As a young lad I remember encountering library hand on card catalog entries at our local Carnegie library.

Richard Ayvazyan and his wife, Marietta Terabelian, were facing prison for their role in a massive covid relief fraud scheme when they cut off their electronic tracking bracelets and fled their California home, abandoning their three teenage children.
They left a typewritten note for the kids, ages 13, 15 and 16. “We will be together again one day,” it read, according to Ayvazyan’s attorney. “This is not a goodbye but a brief break from each other.”
This was late August. Almost three months later — and five months after their convictions in June — the couple still have not been found. The FBI is searching for them.
Too busy looking for January 6 ‘insurrectionists’, I guess.

A federal indictment was unsealed on Thursday charging two Iranians “for their involvement in a cyber-enabled campaign to intimidate and influence American voters, and otherwise undermine voter confidence and sow discord, in connection with the 2020 U.S. presidential election,” according to a Department of Justice press release.
Iranian nationals Seyyed Mohammad Hosein Musa Kazemi, 24, and Sajjad Kashian, 27, are accused of obtaining “U.S. voter information from at least one state election website” and sending “threatening email messages to intimidate and interfere with voters,” according to the indictment. The pair also attempted to gain unauthorized access to state voting sites and accessed an unnamed U.S. media company’s computer network.

Ok. So President Biden, the Democrat Party, and major media outlets all agree that the greatest threat of domestic terrorism comes from right-wing militias and white supremacists. That’s what they say. Well, ok.
As the Rittenhouse jury deliberates, the National Guard has moved several hundred troops nearby, to handle possibly violent riots after the verdict is released. Well, ok.
So I presume that the leaders of the National Guard are thinking, “Ok, if Rittenhouse is found innocent, Black Lives Matter and Antifa will be upset, but they’ll use peaceful and legitimate means to air their grievances. No problem. But if he’s found guilty, the right-wing whackos out there are going to start burning down fast food joints and attacking bystanders. We’d better be ready.”
Ok. Maybe. But I really, really, really doubt that.
Me, too.

As day three of jury deliberations in the Kyle Rittenhouse murder trial began, Judge Bruce Schroeder banned MSNBC from his courtroom for the duration of the trial, after an employee claiming to be a producer with the outlet reportedly followed the van taking jurors home on Wednesday evening and was pulled over after running a red light.
“No one from MSNBC news will be permitted in this building … this is an extremely serious matter and will be referred to the proper authorities,” said Schroeder.
Apparently ‘journalists’ think that the rules don’t apply to them.
Earlier this month, a self-described ‘honorary nephew of George Floyd’ identified as Cortez Rice posted a disturbing video threatening to doxx Rittenhouse jurors if they don’t return a guilty verdict.
Totally unrelated, I’m sure.

ZMan lays it out.
It seems that some of the empire’s rich people have noticed that the walls are down, so they are coming up with solutions. One is a new university in Texas that will gather up various exiles from the establishment into something of a think tank. Their stated claim is they will challenge the orthodoxy of the academy. The money for this is coming from a guy calling himself Joe Lonsdale. He is part of the Peter Thiel network, so it is safe to assume that Thiel money is involved too.
When you look at the list of people involved, it is basically civic nationalism gathering the remaining troops for one last stand. The “left-wing” people involved are the old liberals who never embraced cultural Marxism. The “right-wing” types are mostly people who never had a chance to work at AEI or Heritage. The one thing all of these people have in common is they are exiles from the establishment foundations. This project is an effort to create their own version of Heritage.

The Other McCain does not mince words.
It’s either going to be an acquittal or a hung jury, as I see it, because the evidence so clearly shows Rittenhouse fired in self-defense in each of the three cases — killing the deranged criminal JoJo Rosenbaum, killing skateboard punk Anthony Huber, and wounding Gaige Grosskreutz, who was pointing a Glock pistol at Rittenhouse. By the way, they have identified “Jump Kick Man,” the mystery figure who attacked Rittenhouse right before Huber got shot. “Jump Kick Man” is a convicted felon with a lengthy rap sheet. Rittenhouse fired two shots at him but unfortunately missed, and it was this incident that may have encouraged Huber’s subsequent attack on Rittenhouse. “Jump Kick Man” is reportedly behind bars now, because of a probation violation, but his involvement in the case indicates what I’ve said all along — these rioting mobs weren’t composed of “social justice” idealists, but rather criminal scum looking to engage in mayhem. Democrats, in other words.

Alex Tabarrok, a Real Economist.
Notice how often the words “opportunity”, “freedom” and “choice” appear. Indeed the testimony from the Urban Institute refers to “the freedom to choose.” Excellent.
I agree with these conclusions. Now here is what is strange. Exactly the same arguments apply to school vouchers and school choice. School vouchers give students the freedom to choose the kinds of schooling and locations that best meet their needs. Yet, while many on the left agree that vouchers are superior to public housing, which tends to freeze the poor into low-quality, poorly maintained housing in poor neighborhoods with a host of cognate problems, they are more reluctant to support education vouchers as superior to public schooling. But all the arguments against public housing also apply to public schooling. Public Housing=Public Schooling. (The right are also strangely reluctant to take credit for housing vouchers even though they have mostly worked in just the way that Milton Friedman would have predicted!)
I suggest that the key is the fact that realtors don’t have a union that is a key Democrat constituency. Getting reliable votes trumps helping poor people every time.

Local officials in the northwest (Niger state) claim that more Boko Haram gunmen have been arriving and have taken control of five villages. A security task force is being organized to eliminate that Boko Haram problem. For over a decade Niger State has seen increasing tribal violence and banditry. Both usually involve Fulani tribesmen, who have been active in raiding throughout northern and central Nigeria for generations. The violence is mainly about land use disputes between the nomadic Fulani herders and local farmers. The banditry and raiding are often opportunistic, with locals taking advantage of the chaos, which keeps the security forces occupied, to steal cattle to raid a remote village of another tribe and carry off anything portable of value.
In the last five years the fatalities from this tribal violence have exceeded those caused by Boko Haram, which suffered obvious and massive defeats between 2015 and 2017. That eliminated Boko Haram control of any territory and the group has been surviving through banditry ever since. Boko Haram suffered even greater losses from internal battles. In 2015 a large portion of Boko Haram declared itself part of ISIL (Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant) as ISWAP (Islamic State West Africa Province). In 2018 a smaller ISIL group ISGS (Islamic State in Greater Sahara) occasionally showed up in Borno.

Jeff Bezos, the world’s second-richest man, gave a donation at a star-studded Hollywood charity gala Saturday night—and reportedly got some ribbing for it. The Amazon billionaire, accompanied by girlfriend Lauren Sanchez, still gifted a substantial sum to the Baby 2 Baby charity—$500,000. In all, the event reportedly raised $8.5 million, honoring Kobe Bryant’s widow, Vanessa, with its “Giving Tree” award. An insider who attended the socially conscious bash told Page Six, “Everyone was waiting for him to donate something, but he didn’t. Then someone donated a million dollars. And then a little later, [Bezos] donated $500,000. There was an audible groan from the room. If someone else can donate a million, Jeff Bezos can donate more than a million.”
Update: On Wednesday, a source close to the event clarified that no one donated $1 million. The amount was input incorrectly due to a clerical error.

John Hinderaker at Power Line.
It takes an epic level of chutzpah for a president to do his best to suppress production of oil and gas by blocking pipelines and putting federal lands off limits, and then complain when the prices of oil and gas rise. President Biden achieved the ultimate absurdity by blocking production of petroleum products in the U.S, and then begging Russia and Saudi Arabia to increase their production to bring prices down. This is a level of cosmic stupidity that we may not see again in our lifetimes.
There is more going on than sheer incompetence, however. The truth is that the Democrats want oil and gas to be more expensive. They have been admitting as much, in their more candid moments, for the last twenty years. This is a key part of their grand design to force the rest of us to depend on expensive, unreliable and environmentally damaging “green” energy.

I just watched several hours of testimony from big shots at the NIH and the CDC. It might as well have been a paid advertisement from Moderna and Pfizer. Nearly every word out of the bureaucrats’ mouths was structured to push the vaccines that most everyone knows by now have failed to live up to their promise.
Indeed, if they were as good and safe as they say, government would not need to mandate them. The mandates, ironically, undermine public confidence. It’s hard to imagine that public confidence in everything could fall further, but it will.
To top it off, making all the above much worse, the vaccination is now coming for the kids.
Mandates will surely follow. You want revolution in this country? This is a good way to foment one. The current regime has another year of unchecked power. It seems unfathomable. So far, they have not been deterred by anything, not the courts, not public opinion, not even sinking election prospects.

Families, and the lack of them, are emerging as one of the great political dividing lines in America, and much of the high-income world. The familial ideal was once embraced by all political factions, except on the extremes, but that is no longer the case.
This is among the biggest lessons from the Republicans’ big electoral wins earlier this month. Areas close to Washington DC, where singles predominate and birth rates are negligible, remained Democratic, but in the suburbs, from Northern Virginia to Dallas to Long Island, where the families roam, voters shifted to the centre-right. It’s a poor omen for Democrats, who made strong gains in these areas in 2018.
