We need to stop letting people ‘tell their stories’. Why should random people get half an hour to tell what Oprah would call ‘their truth’? There are so many podcasts out there that simply broadcast people’s rambling anecdotage about the worst thing that ever happened to them — going for that salacious, daytime-TV vibe, but with the authority of journalism, which means narrating traumatic and often outlandish stories while the hosts offer weighty reflections like ‘huh’ and ‘crazy’.

Five Oregon counties approved measures Tuesday to secede and join Idaho, despite the chances of it actually becoming a reality.
Voters in Lake, Grant, Baker, Sherman and Malheur counties approved measures requiring county officials to take steps to secede and move the Idaho border further west in order to encompass the counties, according to The Hill. Two other counties, Jefferson and Union, voted in favor of the measure back in November.

Within President Joe Biden’s infrastructure plan is $174 billion that would both extend the electric vehicle tax credit as well as replace government cars with electric ones. To put this level of waste into perspective: $174 billion is more than practically every state budget.
The proposal would federalize the failed climate mandates in California. It’s not hard to see what’s being forced on states (like my homestate, Kansas) next from the state that has become a socialist laboratory for bad policy experiments. California’s governor even recently signed an order that will phase out gas-powered cars by 2035. This is not based on reality.

The U.S. military is having trouble finding recruits that aren’t too heavy to meet guidelines because of the growing childhood obesity rates across the country, so Army recruiters are working to identify potential soldiers who need to lose dozens of pounds before they can qualify to join the military.
“You’re even recruiting in a population that is obese,” retired Maj. Gen. Malcolm Frost, who served for 35 years in the Army and works with the nonprofit group “Mission Readiness” to prepare potential recruits, told NPR. “That’s what our recruiters around the nation are dealing with.”
According to the Department of Defense, a full third of young adults ages 17-24, the optimal age for recruits, are simply too heavy to sign up.

According to video accounts of the incident posted on Twitter, the pro-Palestinian mob approached a group of men dining at a sushi restaurant in West Hollywood and asked if they were Jewish. When the men replied, “Yes,” they attacked them. The mob hurled bottles and yelled anti-Semitic slurs. One bystander said they repeatedly struck one of the Jewish men “with a pole.” Police are investigating whether the incident was a hate crime.

Severian is delightfully dyspeptic today.
Robert Putnam’s Bowling Alone is one of those books everyone knows, but no one has read (I haven’t). It’s quite a trick, really, to have something so “in the air” like that, such that nobody actually has to read it. If you’ve been to college, or read even a BoomerCon or CivNat site, you know it, in the same way everyone who has been to college knows stuff like Orientalism and Manufacturing Consent. But in case you’ve forgotten, Putnam’s thesis is that social cohesion is real, it’s important, and it is rapidly degrading. His metaphor is bowling leagues — these things used to be everywhere (I was in one in junior high, meaning, the phenomenon was so widespread they could have youth leagues); now they’re not.
…
Mandatory, government-sponsored fun has been on the European Left’s agenda practically since the Estates General. All of that stuff — hiking clubs, guitar clubs, model this-and-that clubs — falls under “building Socialism,” and the idea is either to totally replace a community’s organic ties with State-mandated bonds, or to restore a community’s organic ties via State-mandated bonds, depending on whether the “Socialism” you’re building is of the Soviet or Nazi variety.

A member of the House of Lords in England is currently under investigation for refusing to participate in a mandatory anti-sexual harassment training.
Lord David James, Baron of Blackheath, said that if he took part in the training it would be an act of “treason” against the Queen, according to Insider. James is one of four Lords who are under investigation for not taking part in the program, which was due to be completed by April 1.
…
James, a life peer, said he took an oath to uphold the Queen’s coronation oath and that he thinks the training would breach said oath. He said the training threatens the principle of free speech under the Privilege of Parliament Act 1512.

‘The Amish communities of Pennsylvania, despite the retro image of horse-drawn buggies and straw hats, have long been engaged in a productive debate about the consequences of technology,’ noted Wired magazine in 1999. In 2013, an NPR reporter observed that the ‘Amish community [is] not anti-technology, just more thoughtful’. Kevin Kelly, the co-founder of Wired, spent time geeking out with ‘Amish hackers’ and peeking into workshops whose modern machines are powered by compressed air for his book What Technology Wants (2010). He concluded that: ‘In any discussion about the merits of avoiding the addictive grip of technology, the Amish stand out as offering an honourable alternative.’
The foundation of this ‘honourable alternative’ is to not adopt every single new technology, or use cars, phones and social media as soon as they become the norm. Instead, the Amish make slow and deliberate decisions as a collective. Rather than rushing optimistically or blindly into the future, they move forward cautiously, open but sceptical.
Sorry about the ‘we have to tell a story before getting to the point’ article — that’s the way ‘journalists’ are learning to write these days. I blame the Narrative Media.

“It seemed to me that people have to stand up. Each and every one of us needs to stand up and say we are not sheep, we are a free people,” McCloskey further commented.

Steve Hayward at Power Line.
The Democratic Party’s current obsession with anti-racism uber alles reminds me of the old apocryphal story of the woman who challenged a lecturer (usually said to have been Bertrand Russell) with the proposition that “the entire universe is balanced on the shell of a giant turtle.” To which Russell asked, “What’s the turtle standing on then?”
Answer: “You’re very clever young man, but it’s turtles all the way down.”
For the left, it’s racism all the way down. It explains everything, and has to be incorporated into everything now. Except when climate change explains everything, and has to be incorporated into everything.
Totalitarians always focus on language, as Goebbels and Lenin knew well.

In certain ways, it must be fun to be a left-winger. Pushing for any policy that seems socially just without the constraint of how it actually works out for people (i.e., ignoring the horrors left behind in socialism’s wake throughout history) makes things a whole lot easier. Sounds fun, too.
Just going with your heart and hoping for the best must be liberating. But the most fun leftists have must be when they sit around to talk about some of the dumb ways conservatives talk.
Language is, of course, crucial in a political debate. The left understands this better than the right. The left is also aided by the media, which will always use the left’s preferred phrasing.
To use one prominent example, if the left likes to use the word “pro-choice” and the right prefers “pro-abortion,” the press will go with “pro-choice.” On the other side of the debate, if those on the right prefer to be called “pro-life” but the left defines them as “anti-abortion,” the press will again defer to left-wing terminology and refer to those on the pro-life side as “anti-abortion,” even though that’s not the term they use to describe themselves.

Severian peers behind the curtain.
The great thing about industrial work, though, is that you don’t have to be particularly bright to do it. There’s always going to be a fraction of the population that fails the IQ test, no matter how low you set the bar, but in the early Industrial Revolution that bar was pretty low indeed. So much so, in fact, that pretty soon places like America were experiencing drastic labor shortages, and there’s your history of 19th century immigration. The problem, though, isn’t the low IQ guys. It’s the high-IQ guys whose high IQs don’t line up with remunerative skills.
My academic colleagues were a great example, which is why they were all Marxists. I make fun of their stupidity all the time, but the truth is, they’re most of them bright enough, IQ-wise. Not geniuses by any means, but let’s say 120 IQ on average. Alas, as we all know, 120-with-verbal-dexterity is a very different thing from 120-and-good-with-a-slide-rule. Academics are the former, and any society that wants to remain stable HAS to find something for those people to do. Trust me on this: You do not want to be the obviously smartest guy in the room when everyone else in the room is, say, a plumber. This is no knock on plumbers, who by and large are cool guys, but it IS a knock on the high-IQ guy’s ego. Yeah, maybe I can write you a mean sonnet, or a nifty essay on the problems of labor over-supply in 16th century England, but those guys build stuff. And they get paid.

Every once in a while, a post or series of posts comes along that captures why conservatism never amounted to much. This post in the ironically named American Conservative is a good example of the genre. The topic is how to deal with the privatization of authoritarian power, primarily in Silicon Valley. The argument put forward is that using the state to tame these rogue companies is morally wrong, so we have to find some new way to contend with these out-of-control tech firms.
The first thing you should notice is the style is exactly what we get whenever the topic of immigration in on the table. The obvious answer is dismissed. In the case of immigration, that means shutting down the border and cracking down on employers who use helot labor. The open borders crowd always says that is impossible or harmful in some way. Instead, they offer a collection of overly complex solutions that have no chance of succeeding but will keep the punditry busy.

Once, long ago, in a land far away, the best journalists tried to stand aloof from the stories they reported. The idea was simple and powerful. If journalists tried to be neutral and kept their reporting separate from their opinions, analysis, and speculation, the public would believe them.
Those days are long gone, along with the media’s credibility gone. Journalists and media organizations are now smack in the middle of many stories they cover, in part because they want to be. They want to spin them, to set the narrative.

The researchers have described their new “optical rectennas” in a paper published today (May 18, 2021) in the journal Nature Communications. These devices, which are too small to see with the naked eye, are roughly 100 times more efficient than similar tools used for energy harvesting. And they achieve that feat through a mysterious process called “resonant tunneling” — in which electrons pass through solid matter without spending any energy.
“They go in like ghosts,” said lead author Amina Belkadi, who recently earned her PhD from the Department of Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering (ECEE).
Rectennas (short for “rectifying antennas”), she explained, work a bit like car radio antennas. But instead of picking up radio waves and turning them into tunes, optical rectennas absorb light and heat and convert it into power.
I’ll believe it when I can buy one at Walmart.

I guess we’ll be told we’re unseemly if we giggle at the cancellation of useless stooge Don Lemon’s low-rated airport lounge video muzak, or at how the Israelis leveled the Gaza high-rise housing the AP and Al-Jazeera. Well, color us unseemly, because when the media suffers, we celebrate.
And we’re not going to apologize for it. Half of America, at least, now cares about the media precisely as much as the media cares about us – that is, not at all. In fact, we actively wish it ill. We cheer when some trash website or paper folds. The frequent layoff announcements make us giddy. Sad journalists whining about how people on Twitter dare criticize them cause us to howl in delight.
Our contempt for them is a result of their contempt for us. And as individuals and collectively, we should do whatever we lawfully can to hasten the collapse of the mainstream media as an institution.
Harsh? Nah.

A reminder: Businesses don’t pay taxes — businesses merely collect taxes from their customers for the government. Like any cost, the cost of taxes is incorporated into the price of goods sold; corporations really don’t care one way or another, since it doesn’t come off of their bottom line.
‘Taxing business’ is merely another shuck-and-jive on the part of politicians to disguise the fact that they are actually increasing taxes on ordinary citizens. Such taxes are regressive, hitting low-income people more than high-income people (who are less affected by high prices). Governments are constantly looking for ways to pick taxpayers’ pockets without getting noticed, which is why VAT is so popular in Europe.
