ZMan looks at the economy.
Inflation is one of those things that everyone feels. Even if you are a rich guy, you notice that steak is more expensive. The money is meaningless to you, but the price hike does not go unnoticed. Poor people, of course, feel it straight away. As a result, everyone starts to notice things in the market, like the shrinkflation, for example. A pint of ice cream is 14-ounces now. The potato chip bag is much larger, but there are fewer chips inside the bag. This stuff gets more obvious in bad times.
The thing is, prices going up because of demand or shortages is an honest result that people may not like, but they can accept. Changing the shape of containers to make it look bigger, but reducing the contents is dishonest. It is a fraud. Inflation will bring new scrutiny to this practice that has become common. This sort of institutional fraud is everywhere, but it has gone unnoticed for decades. With inflation, people will start noticing and they will not like it.

I have posted two previous editions of footnotes to our coverage of the trial of Derek Chauvin for the death of George Floyd. My purpose here is to provide background on the legal issues in the case for those who seek to understand them. If you are certain that the issues constitute nothing more than a smokescreen for a predetermined outcome, these footnotes are not for you.
Scott is an actual Minnesota attorney.

More than 180 years ago, John Quincy Adams gave a speech to mark 50 years since the presidential inauguration of George Washington. “If the day should ever come, (may Heaven avert it) when the affections of the people of these states shall be alienated from each other; when the fraternal spirit shall give away to cold indifference, or collisions of interest shall fester into hatred,” he told a New York audience, “far better will it be for the people of the disunited states, to part in friendship from each other, than to be held together by constraint.” Collisions of interest festering into hatred? That sounds familiar. The Trump years were famously light on fraternal spirit and, as the divisions deepened, “parting in friendship” started to look awfully attractive to a growing number of Americans.

The news that six states will gain seats in the House of Representatives and another seven will lose seats, thanks to new census numbers, was widely reported.
What was missed, though, is that the inclusion of noncitizens, including illegal aliens, in the population used to determine apportionment means that many Americans—and states—are being defrauded of their fair share of representation in Congress.
Nothing new here. The infamous ‘three-fifths rule’ in the original Constitution was the result of haggline between the slave states, who wanted to include noncitizen nonvoting black slaves for representation purposes, thereby increasing their clout in the House of Representatives, and the non-slave states, who wanted to count only citizens.

For over 2 million family farms and ranches across the country and the tens of millions of small businesses, the threat of losing generations of their family’s work is a very real possibility. Every day family-owned farms and small businesses are forced to take out loans or sell off land, equipment, property, or — in the worst-case scenario — the entire business operation to pay the federal estate tax and cover attorney fees.
In addition, the death tax forces family businesses to waste money on expensive insurance policies and estate planning. These burdensome compliance costs make it even harder for and deter business owners from expanding their businesses and creating more jobs.
Ideally, the purpose of a tax is to raise revenue for the government. To0 often, it is used as a stick to beat politically unfashionable groups to satisfy the envy of the underclass clients of the ruling class.

A deputy from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office received an earful of, dare we say it, racial abuse during a traffic stop. The deputy purchased his own body cam to protect himself during his working day. A good thing he did because he had no way of knowing that he would meet the Teacher of the Year. She was Black, and the deputy was Hispanic.
He stopped a woman for using her cell phone while driving. She started to rant as only a self-absorbed, entitled person can rant. I know that people don’t care for these traffic violations, but if it’s a sin for an officer to enforce them, he paid for that sin by having to deal with ‘Little Ms. Sunshine’.

It is only fair to wish the administration well in its efforts. However, Biden officials are more likely to succeed if they correctly diagnose the problem. And while it is common to speak of North Korea’s “threat” to America, what precisely is the danger?
Although North Korean leaders have been commonly tagged as crazy, ready to launch a suicidal attack on America, only Kim Jong-un’s late father, Kim Jong-il, looked the part with oversize glasses, bouffant hair, and platform shoes. In fact, all three ruling Kims behaved rationally, playing a weak hand well, turning a small, impoverished, and isolated nation into a global cause celebre.

Massachusetts covers 7,800 square miles of land, yet thanks to a variety of land-use rules 92 percent of its residents are confined to a fifth of that land. Even in the Boston metropolitan area, thousands of acres of open space persist. Satellite imagery reveals huge stretches of open, largely undeveloped lands as close to twenty miles from downtown Boston.

More and more the woke pandemic afflicting our elites and causing them to mask their racism is reminding me of forced busing back in the late 1960s and early 1970s—a project to which liberals (and compliant federal judges) were fiercely dedicated (even as rich liberals sent their own kids to private schools), and which was hugely unpopular.
Then, as now, many Republicans spoke in subdued tones about their opposition to busing for fear of being called “racist,” and the most vocal and direct critics of busing were Democrats like Washington Senator Henry “Scoop” Jackson. That kind of Democrat is long gone, of course, though you hear faint echoes from time to time, such as James Carville’s recent comments reported here that “wokeness is a problem, and everybody knows it.”

In light of recent Islamic terror attacks, French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin is calling for stringent security measures to be placed on convicted terrorists being released from prison. If passed into law, a released terrorist could have his movement limited, including where he can live or what public events – such as concerts or sporting events – he would be barred from attending.
In 2015, ISIS members launched a series of coordinated shootings and bombings at a rock concert in the Bataclan theater and at a soccer match at Stade de France. Some of the perpetrators, like Salah Abdeslam and Abdelhamid Abaaoud, had been radicalized in prison.

The city of Lubbock, Texas approved an ordinance banning abortion procedures within city limits and declaring itself a “sanctuary city for the unborn” Saturday.
While not the first, Lubbock is now the largest city in the U.S. to approve such a measure, but it will likely face legal challenges from abortion advocates who argue the measure is unconstitutional. The move comes just months after Planned Parenthood opened its first clinic in the city, according to the Texas Tribune.
Lubbock residents backed the measure with 62% of the vote on Saturday, joining dozens of other Texas cities that have already passed similar ordinances. Lubbock is the first of these cities to make a declaration while already having an abortion clinic within its limits.

At issue was the case of a woman who suffered burn injuries after a hoverboard she purchased on Amazon in 2015 via a third party merchant caught on fire. Amazon argued that it was merely the platform connecting customers with sellers, but the appeals court found there was a “direct link in the vertical chain of distribution under California’s strict liability doctrine.”
California’s strict liability doctrine was the hook upon which my Torts professor in law school used to hang his You Can’t Make This Shit Up stories on Friday when nobody wanted to do any work.
If necessary, Amazon can just refuse to sell products in California. Let’s see how long California can hold out.

George Floyd’s record is pretty clear that he was an habitual criminal, and indeed when he was arrested he was chock-full of illegal fentanyl, which is why he died.
