The residents of Portland are getting a look at the future of police services, and response time in Portland. It’s not going to be pretty, judging from this Oregonian headline:
“Intruder with knife, boy being held: No Portland police response for 1 hour, 36 minutes.”
Time to leave.

The Other McCain calls out Fredo’s brother.
Before he became infamous for killing Grandma, the Democratic governor of New York signed into law an “affirmative consent” policy (a/k/a “Yes Means Yes”) that applies only to university campuses. Anyone familiar with human nature could predict that this law would produce disastrous consequences, because (a) college girls get drunk, (b) drunk girls do embarrassing things, and (b) the next morning they regret the stuff they did when they were drunk. This scenario accounts for perhaps 90% of all campus “sexual assault” accusations and, even if we can’t hold guys blameless in such incidents, the difficulty is determining guilt in a “he-said/she-said” situation where both participants are usually drunker than the proverbial skunk.

Four years ago the Avengers assembled to stop Donald Trump’s presidential plans.
The video clip featured a who’s who of the MCU, the acronym for Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe. Think Robert Downey, Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Don Cheadle, Mark Ruffalo and Clark Gregg. They joined a gaggle of fellow Hollywood stars to warn the nation against Donald Trump’s potential presidency in a clip dubbed “Save the Day.”
…
That was then. Today, some of these stars are re-assembling to push Joe Biden’s presidential hopes against now-President Trump. Nothing unusual there given the industry’s progressive leanings.
So what’s missing?

The ghoulish political maneuvering continued on MSNBC, Friday night, as CNN and MSNBC hosts trashed Republicans and plotted to stop Mitch McConnell from replacing the late Ruth Bader Ginsburg. CNN political analyst Gloria Borger sounded like a DNC operative as she lobbied to keep a conservative justice off the Supreme Court.

The Sellout: It goes without saying that Reid, McConnell and Co. will sell us out; the only questions are “when” and “how.” My best guess is that they team up with their respected opponents across the aisle to announce that, to solemnly honor the memory of a great American, they’ll hold off on any confirmation hearings until after the election.

ZMan pulls no punches.
After years of false promises, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg has finally made the world a better place by exited from it. Her near-death experiences had reached a number where it was starting to look as if she was immortal. She was in the hospital more than the typical nurse, but somehow always managed to recover. It turns out that her deal with Old Scratch did have an expiry date and the world rejoices. They announced her death Friday night, but who knows when she really died.
As is custom when a Progressive goblin dies, the liberal media will carry on as if she was the most important person in history. They had already made movies about her that no one watched, so they will all be wearing black armbands this week. Whatever funeral services they have for her will be turned into another circus. Maybe in honor of George Floyd, peace be upon him, they will drop her corpse next to his. Then pilgrims can pay respects to both on the same trip.
Rather refeshing, really, what with all of the RINOS and NeverTrumper cucks lining up to bow to her coffin. Ginsburg was an ACLU hack until her dying day, and her only saving grace was that she wasn’t as ‘woke’ as she could have been.

Deconstructing the Washington Post.
As I wondered at the time, what was the most important thing for readers of Washington Post to see on the front-page of the paper? A big headline focusing directly on the legacy or impact of the life of Antonin Scalia? No. In bold, large font, the Post declared, “Supreme Court Conservative Dismayed Liberals.”

GOP congressional candidate for Maryland’s seventh district Kim Klacik, whose powerful campaign ad about how Democrats have destroyed Baltimore drew the attention of President Trump, appeared on The View today and there were definitely fireworks.
While co-hosts Meghan McCain and Sara Haines were polite to their guest, liberal co-hosts Joy Behar, Sunny Hostin, and Ana Navarro were extremely hostile particularly because the young, black Republican woman strongly defended President Trump on the issue of racism. In fact, she made them so angry that the liberal hosts ganged up on her and shouted her down to end the show.
I guess black lives don’t matter when they vote Republican.

One of the phoniest and most outrageous tropes pushed by the leftist press is that they are just innocent bystanders who report the news, instead of being partisan hacks who routinely push whatever narrative the Democratic Party wants. As wildfires rip through the Pacific states, environmentalists and liberal politicians are blaming man-caused global warming. But the particular severity of this year’s fires may be traced to a different cause: arson.
There’s evidence of criminal human activity causing forest fires. Over a dozen people have been charged recently with setting western wildfires. Domingo Lopez Jr. may be the champion firebug. He started a brush fire along I-205 in Oregon using a Molotov Cocktail, was arrested, booked and later released. Then Lopez proceeded to start six more small fires in the next twelve hours before being apprehended again. Another alleged arsonist, BLM activist Jeffrey Acord, livestreamed the fire on Facebook as police arrived, then claimed to be calling the incident in.
At a time when the Left Coast cities are convulsed by riots and looting, this ought to come as no surprise.

ZMan does his weekly podcast on a subject that most people avoid.
Failure analysis is one of those things that most people do every day, but they don’t think about it that way. Much of what passes for a work in a modern corporation is exception handling, which is just solving the problems that occur when the normal business processes fail in some way. No one calls customer service to tell them that they are happy with the product and have no complaints. Those departments and the people in them exist to figure out what went wrong and remedy it.
At a higher level, smart people making big salaries spend their days trying to understand why complex systems produce unacceptable results. There are people who spend every day studying plane crashes, looking for the cause of the failure. Pretty much every quality control program is just failure analysis. The idea is to measure success against some ambitious standard and then look for the causes as to why the standard is not currently being met.

Two weeks ago, Princeton University’s president, Christopher Eisgruber, issued a letter to the Princeton community in which he admitted that the institution he has run for seven years is plagued by “systemic racism.” This is quite an admission for a number of reasons.
One of them, as I pointed out, is that it confesses to a violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act. Title VI provides that “No person in the United States shall, on the ground of race, color, or national origin, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.” Those who attend a “systemically racist” college are, by definition, subjected to discrimination by the college.
I wasn’t the only one who spotted this problem. The U.S. Department of Education has spotted it, too.
When confessing your sins, anything you say may be taken down and used in evidence against you.
I thought that the requirement that the President of Princeton identify every individual student that has been harmed by Princeton’s ‘systemic racism’ and specify the damage done is especially humorous.

This spring, public officials at all levels were thrown into a public-health crisis that made the first SARS, H1N1, Ebola, MERS, and Zika look like small potatoes. It is understandable that mistakes would be made, but officials assured us that their decisions were data-driven and that they were following science (or “SCIENCE!” as Gavin Newsom insists).
When cities and states enacted lockdowns, mostly in March and April, the U.S. had about a million diagnosed cases, concentrated in cities, particularly in the Northeast. Lots of counties in the rest of the country had few or no cases. Enacting a full lockdown in those places — shutting down all nonessential businesses, telling people to stay home, placing restrictions on interstate travel — was an excessive step that burned through a limited supply of public patience. Eight weeks of lockdowns limited the stress on hospitals and bought time, but at extreme economic cost, and that time was largely not put to good use. We would have been better off if restrictions were enacted on a local basis, depending on the prevalence of cases — although our assessment of how many cases were in an area was impeded by the limited number of tests and the difficulty of getting fast results. Some corners of the public will be highly resistant to any attempt to reinstate those restrictions, because they no longer have faith that they’re necessary.
We don’t mind ‘following the science’ so long as it is not JUNK SCIENCE, which a lot of the underlayment of these job-destroying restrictions is turning out to be.
