Bill Maher closed Friday’s edition of Real Time with a hyperbolic rant directed at Republicans on Capitol Hill. In addition to slamming the congressional GOP for always sticking by President Trump no matter what, Maher compared Republican Senator Lindsey Graham to a “slave abused by fat daddy” and warned that “democracy is about to stop breathing.”
I get the impression that Bill Maher is one of those fashionable people who at one time was considered ‘edgy and entertaining’ but has coasted to a crawl where he is just on the fringe. People watch him out of inertia and he gets paid out of inertia, in the same way that certain ‘classic’ black and white films get replayed on late night TV because they are ‘classics’ rather than because they are really worth watching.

So now the left in Britain wants to take down statues of . . . (checks notes) . . . Gandhi?!? Apparently he was “a fascist, racist and sexual predator.” Anyone who read Richard Grenier’s classic book The Gandhi Nobody Knows knew this a long time ago, but I thought his anti-colonial bona fides kept him in good standing with the Intersectionale.

Before the 1960s, American blacks suffered from white people who actively tried to oppress them. After the ’60s, blacks suffered from white people who actively tried to help them. It was the latter who have, by far, hurt blacks the most.
Many black people spend an inordinate amount of time thinking about white people. Most white people spend negligible amounts of time thinking about black people. Black people find this so shocking and offensive that they refuse to believe it, clinging instead to the delusion that white people spend their time looking for ways to oppress black people.

The disease isn’t over, but the hysteria is. For many, the turning point came when public health “experts” who had bitterly denounced demonstrations against shutdowns as health hazards, responded to the Black Lives Matter riots with silence and, often, enthusiastic endorsement. That lasted until President Trump announced his intention to resume holding rallies. Once again, we are told that public gatherings are a vitally important health threat. It isn’t hard to understand the game that is being played here.

The Left are masters at political organization, and a major reason is their brutal and uncompromising orthodoxy. Step out of line, and they will whip you back. Take a few steps, and they will kill you…metaphorically or in reality, depending on the location.
That is a tremendous advantage in the political arena, because it allows them to speak with essentially one voice, and the messages are amplified by the image of unity. But the obvious disadvantage is that like the Trojans and Cassandra, the truth, if inconvenient or contrary to the cant will be ignored.
The list of the Left’s Cassandras is long, and it isn’t confined to the political. Science, engineering, even basic biology must be subsumed by the Message.

News is about providing readers with information. The opinion section is about providing readers with arguments. Readers use the information to become more informed, and better able to understand, respond to, disagree with, or otherwise digest the arguments. This process makes them better citizens. Journalism thus plays a very important civic function.
Unfortunately, only the last line in that paragraph is true.
…
In a recent blog post, the economist Tyler Cowen got it exactly right when he wrote “the feature of media that actually draws viewer interest is how media stories either raise or lower particular individuals in status… The status ranking of individuals implied by a particular media source is never the same as yours, and often not even close.”
These implicit status rankings are baked into almost every aspect of how journalism, from how a lede is written to who to quote and in what order, photo selection, headlines, font size, you name it. Print media is particularly prone to this, since the geography of a newspaper is essentially one big status playground. (I’ll never forget the time I got an angry call from a reader for burying a story above the fold on the front page. The sin was that the story he thought deserved more play was lined down the rightmost column of the page, while another (lesser) story ran across the top three columns.)

The way it works is simple. Instead of the traditional ink you’d find in everyday pens, the Forever Pininfarina Cambiano Inkless Pen features a metal alloy capable of writing on regular paper. And even without any lead or graphite, this forever pen can be used to draw and sketch with ease. And while the pen represents a new, modern way of writing, it boasts a classic, wooden design, making it a piece you’ll treasure forever.

This is mostly about AR-15s (ack!ptui!) but this paragraph lets you know everything you need to know about the author:
It reminds me of what people say when they want to convince you cats are real pets: “My cat is just like a dog!” Why didn’t you just buy a dog, then? No one ever says, “You’ll love my dog! He’s just like a cat!” This is true for the same reason no one ever tries to make fake vegetables from meat.

In this time of grieving and self-reflection, it is important for white people to think about their whiteness. It is what George would have wanted. In order to fully appreciate your whiteness, you must first understand blackness. This is something that gets missed in all of these discussions. Whiteness does not exist outside the context of blackness, because white people simply don’t care about whiteness. In order for them to care, they have to be surrounded by blackness.

Today’s unrest involves two sections of US society, African-Americans and upper-middle-class whites, who together form the axis of the Democratic Party, but it is the latter who are far more engaged in racial activism. The “Great Awokening”, the mass movement focused on eradicating racism in America and with a quasi-religious, almost hysterical feel to it, is dominated by the upper middle class.
…
That noble tradition of haute bourgeoisie revolution continues today, especially in the US. The Occupy movement, for example, is deeply opposed to the 1% but largely because they come from the 2-5%; Amy Chua cited figures suggesting that in New York, more than half it members earned $75,000 or more while only 8% were on low incomes, compared to 30% of the city. They also have hugely disproportionate numbers of graduates and post-grads among their members.
The wider Great Awokening, of which the 2020 disturbances are a part, is a very elite phenomenon, with progressive activists nearly twice as likely as the average American to make more than $100,000 a year, nearly three times as likely to have a postgraduate degree, and only one-quarter as likely to be black. Likewise with the radicalisation of American academia, with the safe spaces movement most prevalent at elite colleges, where students were much more likely to disinvite speakers or express more extreme views.

Facebook’s third party fact-checkers, selected by the liberal Poynter Institute, have officially labeled World Health Organization’s (WHO) statement about asymptomatic transmission of COVID-19 as “misleading.” Ironically, in April, Facebook used the WHO to disprove myths about COVID-19.
According to Healthfeedback.org, a wing of Sciencefeedback.org, two scientists analyzed a piece on CNBC and determined that the “statements by the WHO and the reporting by CNBC were misleading and imprecise.” The CNBC piece touting the WHO’s statement was covered up with an interstitial, or filter, and labeled “partially false.”
There’s an echo in here.

When George Floyd tried to pass a counterfeit $20 bill in a Minneapolis grocery store, did he imagine that his crime would set in motion a chain of events leading to his own death, riots that caused the destruction of millions of dollars of property, and a three-hour funeral service with a sermon by Al Sharpton broadcast live on national TV?
The grocery store has become “Mecca” for the Cult of Social Justice that worship at the Shrine of the Blessed Martyr. This reminds me of how some extremists were drawn to the Branch Davidian compound near Waco as the symbol of an “anti-government” movement that led to the bombing of the federal building in Oklahoma City.
