Back in 2011 the United States and China both introduced electronic fire control systems for 40mm long-barrel grenade launchers. Nearly a decade later both of these longer range, highly accurate 40mm weapons are still in production. Both are niche weapons and popular enough to keep getting made and upgraded.
40mm is about an inch and a half.

Minneapolis got away with being a liberal city for quite a while, but the rot was deep and the decline was inevitable. Now the city vies with Seattle, Chicago and Baltimore as a haven for crime. When the crime was limited to minority neighborhoods, Minneapolis’s city fathers–to the extent any are left–were willing to put up with it. But that is no longer true. Murder now reaches into the heart of “progressive” Minnesota.

As I’ve often mentioned, a psychiatrist who blogs under the name Scott Alexander at his site Slate Star Codex (an anagram of his pen name) emerged as the most brilliant new public intellectual of the 2010s. His combination of extremely high IQ, unbelievably long attention span, and an almost saintly disposition have endeared him to many.
But now his blog is gone, because the New York Times was about to dox his real surname.
This is why we can’t have nice things.

One of the most pernicious phenomena of modern times is the collusive lawsuit. This is how it works: a left-wing organization sues a government agency that is also controlled by the left. The lawsuit alleges that the agency is obliged to do something that the agency would like to do, but the Democrats can’t get it passed. Then the parties–supposedly adverse, but actually in collusion–“settle” the case by having the agency agree to do what it wanted to do all along. If all goes well, a court enters an order enforcing the settlement. So the net effect is that a policy that the Democrats couldn’t get passed is now a court-ordered mandate. This happens often.

So many wealthy people are rushing to move away from the big cities that it is creating a bit of a “real estate boom” in many suburban areas, small towns and rural communities. Fear of COVID-19, a collapsing economy and the tremendous urban violence that we have witnessed in recent weeks have combined to create a frenzy of activity. Last week, my wife and I heard from a friend in New York City that is all of a sudden desperate to move to another state, and I certainly can’t blame him for wanting to relocate. If I was in his shoes, I would be wanting to move too. But at this point so many people are all thinking the same thing that the demand for housing in certain areas threatens to greatly exceed the supply.

While we’re on the subject of selective indignation, the Great Repudiators will stand exposed as shameless hypocrites if they don’t loudly demand that Yale University change its name, for it is well known that the university’s namesake Elihu Yale was not just a slave-owner but a slave-trader—an act the United States made a capital offense decades before it got round to abolishing slavery. We know they won’t change it—and we all know why, though of course the oh-so-race-sensitive leaders of Yale won’t admit it publicly. Alumni would be furious and donations would plummet, and I suspect even radical black students at Yale wouldn’t want the name changed. Symbolism is one thing, but having “B.A., University of New Haven” on your CV just won’t sound as prestigious.
Note; There actually is a University of New Haven, and it languishes in (perhaps deserved) anonymity.

The highest honor in Britain, personally bestowed on recipients by the Queen of England, has come under fire over accusations of racism and resemblance to the killing of George Floyd.
…
A Change.org petition says the image is “highly offensive” and “reminiscent of the recent murder of George Floyd by the white policeman in the same manner presented here in this medal.”
I can see no evidence that this is intended as a parody.
Truly, you can’t make this shit up.

In Minnesota, Democrats control the House side of the legislature, but Republicans control the Senate. Thus, if police “reform” is to be enacted, the two parties must agree.
They don’t. Republicans are in favor of reform legislation. They back eleven steps including banning choke holds and requiring officers to stop colleagues from using excessive force. Those two measures alone, if followed, would have saved the life of George Floyd.
But Governor Walz calls the Republican proposal “weak sauce.” He and his fellow Democrats demand a more radical bill.
Among the provisions Democrats insist upon are restoring voting rights to tens of thousands of felons (which has nothing to do with police reform) and placing the state’s attorney general, Keith Ellison, in charge of prosecuting police killings. They also demand a ban on “warrior training” which, as I understand it, teaches police officers how to fight off attacks.
Democrats want felons to be able to vote because felons are more likely to vote Democrat than Republican, as the most cursory thought will reveal to be true. It’s just another case of ‘Let No Crisis Go To Waste’ political maneuvering.

This article is being published on the second day of what will likely be the longest summer in American history. After a hyper-claustrophobic national lockdown that took us from the end of winter to the cusp of summer, suddenly the blacks decided to get angry.
I jest, of course—not that the blacks are angry, but that they were the ones who made the decision. The decision was made for them through a meticulously managed plan of indoctrination and selective access to information.
They were told who to blame. And blame them they did. Ironically, they were told this BY the people who were actually to blame, but that’s the way it always works.

The cesspool that is the United Nations Human Rights Council has decided that its top official, a Chilean socialist called Michelle Bachelet, shall “prepare a report on systemic racism, violations of international human rights law against Africans and people of African descent by law enforcement agencies, especially those incidents that resulted in the death of George Floyd and other Africans and of people of African descent.” The “systemic racism” and human rights violations are assumed. Apparently, Bachelet’s task is to write these conclusions up.

For those not following along at home, Mayor Bill de Blasio holds a personal grudge against these rebellious Jews. Many Orthodox Jews continued to hold gatherings during the NYC lockdown. When Orthodox Jews held a public funeral, de Blasio threatened to arrest them.
Mind you, the event organizers actually met with NYPD to arrange their event in the safest possible manner. Can the same be said of the Black Lives Matter protests? While I wouldn’t advocate the arrest of anyone holding a peaceful gathering, why has de Blasio encouraged those protests while threatening funeral attendees?
Other Brooklyn Orthodox Jews have been outraged that playgrounds are closed. Why can people march in the streets if children can’t play on a playground? So the rebels did what good rebels do: They brought bolt cutters and reopened the parks themselves. When new locks arrived, they cut them again. Thus far, they’ve cut the locks 25 times.

Steve has a jaundiced view.
According to a well-known former Republican, the reason Trump’s rally didn’t do well is that leftist liars took a large number of tickets fraudulently. Left-leaner Steve Schmidt, who worked as a strategist for people like McCain and Schwarzenegger, brags that his daughter and her friends have hundreds of tickets. Legislator and former bartendress Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez also bragged about the fraud and said she was proud of the people who had done it.
It’s a sickening moment. People who hate Trump are too stupid and immature to understand that subverting democracy is a great evil.
Some time ago, I predicted that America would one day be ruled not by Democrats or Republicans but by people with smartphones. I said technology’s ability to coordinate people was getting so strong, we would reach a point where elections and laws would lose their power. Everyone can’t be in the police or the national guard. It’s impossible to control Americans when a sufficient number of them are united in real time by gadgets. It looks like we’ve just seen a big step toward true technocracy administered by complete idiots. The Beast is discovering his hands.

They say he hires protesters and rents buses to transport them. Some say he has people stash piles of bricks to be hurled into glass storefronts or at police.
George Soros, the billionaire investor and philanthropist who has long been a target of conspiracy theories, is now being falsely accused of orchestrating and funding the protests over police killings of Black people that have roiled the United States. Amplified by a growing number of people on the far right, including some Republican leaders, online posts about Soros have skyrocketed in recent weeks.
I love the smell of conspiracy in the morning.

he British author Douglas Adams had this to say about airports: “Airports are ugly. Some are very ugly. Some attain a degree of ugliness that can only be the result of special effort.” Sadly, this truth is not applicable merely to airports: it can also be said of most contemporary architecture.
Concur.
The fact is, contemporary architecture gives most regular humans the heebie-jeebies. Try telling that to architects and their acolytes, though, and you’ll get an earful about why your feeling is misguided, the product of some embarrassing misconception about architectural principles. One defense, typically, is that these eyesores are, in reality, incredible feats of engineering. After all, “blobitecture”—which, we regret to say, is a real school of contemporary architecture—is created using complicated computer-driven algorithms! You may think the ensuing blob-structure looks like a tentacled turd, or a crumpled kleenex, but that’s because you don’t have an architect’s trained eye.
Said training is a bug, not a feature.
The authors appears to believe that the current excrescent architecture is somehow the fault of ‘capitalism’, which version unspecified, and that causes me to scratch my head — capitalism? No, proglodyte public fascism, continuing the tradition of Soviet brutalism. Geez.

We humans are pattern-finding creatures. Even the most primitive tribes — the kind that wear coconut codpieces and eat grubs — understand, and embrace, the notion of cause and effect. The phrase “cargo cult” is brutally overused in Our Thing, but it’s worth remembering what “cargo cults” actually are.
…
You think the Cosplay Communards up in Seattle have ever actually read the “intersectional” gobbledygook they’re spouting? I taught college for a lot of years, y’all, and I promise you: I could assign Harry fucking Potter and maybe one in four of them would read it. Two others would be too busy getting drunk and laid, and the fourth wouldn’t do it just on general principles. The idea that these goofballs can even spell “reification” is laughable. Like the New Left of which they are very pale reflections — pun most definitely intended — they’re only mouthing this stuff as their excuse to flip cars and break shit. I guarantee you, you could get them quoting Hitler himself at their rallies if you took his name off it. “Interest slavery,” anyone?

Father Daniel Moloney is the latest victim of cancel culture’s inquisition against all who question the Black Lives Matter movement. Moloney was forced out of his job as the Catholic chaplain of MIT last week after a university administrator deemed his writings on the death of George Floyd “deeply disturbing” and the Archdiocese of Boston asked him to resign.
In a blog post and an email to students published at the beginning of June, Moloney spoke out about the errors of the new approach to fighting racism — dividing people, accusing them of prejudice, and canceling those who disobey — and called instead for a Christian path of charity and solidarity.
Yeah, I can see how the New University and the New Catholic Church would have a problem with that.
Never more glad to be Orthodox.
