Just as everyone with half a frontal lobe had expected, the WSJ reported late on Monday that according to an initial U.S. assessment, “Iran was likely behind the attack” on the two Saudi Arabian oil tankers and two other vessels damaged over the weekend near the Strait of Hormuz, a U.S. official said, a finding that, whether confirmed or not, will certainly inflame military tensions in the Gulf and likely result in a global proxy war that drags in the US, China and Russia. Oh, and that would be the Persian Gulf for those wondering, not the Gulf of Tonkin, which is where another famous False Flag naval incident occurred.

The reason is simple: The victims are Jews, who the left now considers to be near or at the bottom of the “Progressive Stack” and not worthy of defending from unprovoked street attacks, and the perpetrators are by blacks and Hispanics, who are at or near the top of the Progressive Stack and therefore cannot be criticized, even if they’re knocking out a minority group for no reason except that they’re Jews.

John’s post yesterday about how Denmark’s left-leaning social democrats are turning against immigration—not just any immigration but specifically from you-know-where—has prompted me to writing about a broader dilemma that, sooner or later, America’s liberals will need to confront.
Milton Friedman and other libertarians long argued that you can have high rates of unskilled immigration, or a generous welfare state, but not both. The basic thought is that high rates of unskilled immigrants will eventually bankrupt the welfare state, and while this may yet prove true, the deeper reason is not fiscal, but cultural and social. This is what the Danes have figured out.

Reporters today believe that their coverage serves higher agendas of social justice, identity politics, “equality,” and diversity. To the degree a news account is expanded or ignored, praised or blasted, depends on its supposed utility to the effort to fundamentally transform the country into something unlike its founding.

Notable about all this is that workers plainly agree that Amazon’s working conditions are pretty logical. Indeed, according to the New York Times Amazon reached 300,000 employees faster than any public company in history. It wouldn’t have if conditions were of the “sweatshop” variety, and if the work culture were defined by “human suffering.” Unemployment is presently low, there are countless employers out there that aren’t Amazon, yet people flock to Amazon.

Sharing was supposed to transform our world for the better. Instead, the only thing we’re sharing is the mess it left behind.
Markets are self-organizing, based on the incentives inherent in any given situation and the amazingly sophisticated operations of human ingenuity. Ignorance of this basic fact is one of the chief causes of the disasters that can often plague the best-laid plans of mice and men, not to mention governments and tech start-ups.

Jim Goad takes a look behinds the myths.
Why the hell are these mass shooters always straight white males?
Well, for starters, because they’re not. According to a study of mass shootings in the USA between 1982 and February 2019, 62 out of 110 shooters were white, which comprises 56% of the total. Since non-Hispanic whites accounted for nearly 80% of the public in 1982 and currently hover at about 63%, whites have consistently been underrepresented as mass shooters over the past 37 years.
I’ve previously written about a similar myth—that there are no black serial killers. In reality, blacks are overrepresented among the ranks of serial killers by anywhere from 200% to 400%, and that’s assuming that no one counts gang members as serial killers.
Why the myths, then? It’s almost as if some people harbor intense racial hatred for whites.

We have been writing for years about the fact that any European who expresses skepticism about the wisdom of mass immigration is immediately branded “far right,” no matter what his other views may be. This has had the unhealthy effect of driving voters toward parties that, in some cases, have indeed been unsavory. But it was probably only a matter of time before “mainstream” parties would see the writing on the wall.

I doubt that anybody living really appreciates the shit that black people had to go through before the changes in the mid-60s. The fact that race-pimps and professional victims have metastasized that achievement into the cancer that race relations have become doesn’t detract from the significance of the achievement itself.

But since the company’s founding in 1948, nothing about Dr. Bronner’s has been conventional. Its CEO, David Bronner, a ponytailed vegan surfer who wears tie-dyed shirts and drives a rainbow-colored Mercedes-Benz, has planted hemp seeds on the Drug Enforcement Administration’s lawn and was once arrested for locking himself in a cage outside the White House.
Michael Bronner, David’s more buttoned-up brother, says that social media, where so many beauty and wellness brands have built virtual empires, is “essentially amoral.” Dr. Bronner’s calls itself the “fighting soap company” because so much of its revenue goes toward activism. Most revealingly, perhaps, the brand claims that the first ingredient in all its products, from soap to coconut oil to household cleaner, is “love!” — exclamation point and all.
I see a lot of virtue-signaling, not very much in the way of ‘wellness’.

I think this is well argued. We are long past he day when almost every girl was taught to cook in Home Ec in high school. Most men would rather eat junk food than prepare a nutritious meal, and women who have a full-time job don’t feel like spending an hour over a stove when they get home.

During the first Jobsian era at Apple, I used to joke that Steve Jobs cared deeply about Apple customers from the moment they first considered purchasing an Apple computer right up until the time their check cleared the bank. Of course, in later years, the check was replace by a credit card, and check clearance was replaced by the 15-day return period, but Steve’s and Apple’s focus remained the same.
What do most buyers not want? They don’t want to see all kinds of scary-looking controls surrounding a media player. They don’t want to see a whole bunch of buttons they don’t understand. They don’t want to see scroll bars. They do want to see clean screens with smooth lines. Buyers want to buy Ferraris, not tractors, and that’s exactly what Apple is selling.

I was back: I was at MLA (short for “Modern Language Association”), the annual pageant for literary studies, my old vocation. Here scholars gather every January, performing the time-honored rite of solemnly chanting 20-minute papers before one another in hotel conference rooms. And here, until recently, the field held interviews for its ever-dwindling pool of tenure-track professorships. They’ve largely switched to Skype now.
…
All around them, the humanities burned. The number of jobs in English advertised on the annual MLA job list has declined by 55 percent since 2008; adjuncts now account for all but a quarter of college instructors generally. Whole departments are being extirpated by administrators with utilitarian visions; from 2013 to 2016, colleges cut 651 foreign-language programs. Meanwhile the number of English majors at most universities continues to swoon.

A proposed hike in Illinois’ annual registration fee for electric vehicles, from $17.50 to $1,000, is being called unfair by current EV owners, and a sales disincentive by manufacturers — just as the new technology is beginning to gain broader traction.
“It’s outrageous,” said Nicoletta Skarlatos, 56, of Chicago, who bought a Tesla Model S five years ago. “I thought Illinois was progressive and would want to encourage EV ownership.”
Illinois is progressive, and these ‘progressive’ politicians have realized that electric vehicles are toys for the rich — and what do they do with the rich? Soak ’em!
The justification for the dramatic hike? Electric vehicles don’t provide the state with any gas tax revenue.
And tax revenue comes before everything. Democrat pols to taxpayers: Pay us now or pay us later, you’re gonna pay us.

In a nutshell, this team found that if you start learning a language before the age of 18, you have a much better likelihood of obtaining a native-like mastery of the language’s grammar than if you start later. This is a much older age than has been generally assumed and is really interesting for reasons I’ll get into a bit later.
I question the characterization of 18-year-olds as ‘adults’ but it’s still interesting.

ZMan indulges in a little schadenfreude.
Way back in the olden thymes, there was a pop act called Milli Vanilli. They were sold as an R&B duo from Munich, but both members were black. That added to their appeal, even in the pre-woke 1980’s. Their debut album was wildly successful in Europe and the US, selling millions of copies. They won a Grammy and had a world tour. The whole thing fell apart when they foolishly revealed that neither of them sang the songs on their album and their shows were lip-synced. They were disgraced and that was the end of the act.
There is a whiff of that with the fallout from the Ben Shapiro interview on the BBC that has been making the rounds. He agreed to be questioned by Andrew Neil, without bothering to learn anything about the format of the show. The setup is the host grills the guest, giving them a chance to rise to the occasion and show their stuff. Alternatively, as in the case of Ben Shapiro, it is a chance for the guest to reveal themselves to be a lightweight incapable of playing with the big boys. It was not a good day for Ben Shapiro Inc.
ZMan doesn’t have much use for Ben Shapiro. I don’t dislike him as much as ZMan does, but I can’t say that I like him very much either.
