Scott Johnson at Powerline looks at Democrats reverting to type.
Democrats now freely display the sort of anti-Catholic bigotry that JFK was thought to have vanquished in the 1960 presidential campaign. As they have done with so much of their history, the Democrats have deposited JFK and the 1960 campaign down the memory hole.
I wrote about the anti-Catholic bigotry on display in the Senate Judiciary Committee in 2017. It was the subject of my City Journal column “The unfunniest senator” (that was Minnesota Senator Al Franken, before the fall). At the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Amy Coney Barrett’s nomination to the Seventh Circuit, Senators Dick Durbin and Dianne Feinstein conducted a mini-inquisition of Barrett’s religious views. “Do you consider yourself an orthodox Catholic?” Durbin asked. Feinstein concluded her questioning by telling Barrett that “the [Catholic] dogma lives loudly within you, and that’s of concern.” They all but asked Barrett whether she is now or ever has been a member of the Catholic Church.
How soon before they ask her whether she takes her marching orders from the Pope? (You know, that child-abuse enabler in Rome.) The Democrats were known for their anti-Catholic sentiments during the Jim Crow era, and they seem to be sneaking up on their traditional anti-Semitism. How long before they start dissing black folks? It’s only a matter of time….

John Derbyshire turns over a rock to see what crawls out.
Anyone who pays attention now understands the game being played down there. Juanita pays a sum of money to the coyotes, memorizes a sob story they feed her, rounds up her kids—or hires someone else’s from the coyotes—treks north to our border, presents herself to Border Patrol, or to immigration officers at a port of entry, regurgitates the sob story, lingers in detention a few days being interviewed and signing forms, then gets a ride to the nearest big-city bus depot.
Recently, I went to a talk by Todd Bensman, who worked intelligence at the Texas border. A regular chore for workers at those big-city bus stations, he told us, is sweeping up the piles of ankle bracelets illegals cut off as soon as they get there.
Court appearance? Yeah, right. She’s in, and will never be deported. And so are her children. Or “children.”
The Gestapo at their most pluripotent couldn’t keep track of all the illegal immigrants that seep through our porous system every year. The KGB would find it a challenge but could probably do it.

A new city policy requiring public signs on brick buildings warning they might collapse in an earthquake is part of a long history of white supremacy aimed at forcing black people to move out of neighborhoods, the NAACP of Portland, Oregon, says.
The group on Thursday decried the policy affecting some 1,600 unreinforced masonry buildings that are on average 90 years old, many in areas with a predominantly black population, The Oregonian/OregonLive reports .
The policy “exacerbates a long history of systemic and structural betrayals of trust and policies of displacement, demolition, and dispossession predicated on classism, racism, and white supremacy,” the group said.
I am not making this up.

Paul Mirengoff at Powreline unpacks the news.
The New York Times reports that “in the days after President Trump fired James B. Comey as F.B.I. director, law enforcement officials became so concerned by the president’s behavior that they began investigating whether he had been working on behalf of Russia against American interests.” The Times cites “former law enforcement officials and others familiar with the investigation.” They say the FBI investigation ended when Robert Mueller was appointed. If this specific charge remained under investigation, Mueller did the investigating.
If it’s true that the FBI undertook the investigation described by the Times, this tells us plenty about the FBI. It tells us nothing about Trump.
Whenever any of the DemLegHump Media say ‘according to anonymous sources familiar with the matter’, they’re just making it up.

Mexican authorities discovered five abandoned vehicles and at least 20 bodies at a rural location 56 miles west of McAllen, Texas, Wednesday, CNN reported.
News of the discovery came just hours after CNN White House correspondent Jim Acosta reported on the area’s apparent safety and tranquility. (RELATED: Tucker Mocks ‘Renaissance Poet’ Jim Acosta For Border Wall Video)
“We’re not seeing any kind of imminent danger. There are no migrants trying to rush toward this fence here in the McAllen, Texas, area,” Acosta said in a video posted to his Twitter account Thursday. “No sign of the national emergency that [President Donald Trump] has been talking about. As a matter of fact, it’s pretty tranquil down here.”

Bethan Roper died on the Great Western Railway train near Twerton, Bath, on 1 December.
The 28-year-old charity worker was returning home to south Wales from a Christmas shopping trip in London with friends when the accident occurred.
Her head was out of the window of a door on the train, which was travelling at 85mph, when it was struck by the branch.
A report by the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) found a yellow “caution” label above the door said, “Do not lean out of window when train is moving”.
Let that be a lesson to us all.
Think of it as evolution in action.

A San Diego television station on Thursday said that CNN had asked for a “local view” and then “declined to hear from us” after past reports from the station showed that a border wall was effective.
A CNN spokesperson pushed back on KUSI’s claim on Friday, calling it a “non story” since the network ultimately didn’t book any reporters from stations in the San Diego area.

A year after the passage of a sweeping law that capped deductions on state and local taxes — hitting homeowners hardest in places like New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, where state income and property taxes are among the highest — brokers from low and no income-tax states like Florida are racing to get the word out about how rich the savings are in their markets, above all for top earners.

Washington Post Columnist: The Networks Need To De-Platform Trump Good luck with that. He’s the only one shoring up their business model. They would soon find that they need him more than he needs them.
Ace of Spades comments:
For some time, the conservative movement has been divided between liberals who don’t really mind liberal rule because they like liberals because they are liberals, and actual conservatives, who feared, correctly, that the left was as serious as Hitler when it has repeatedly told us exactly what it intended to do, which is to punish and suppress any speech they think is “wrong.” They have repeatedly told us that all issues are now “beyond discussion,” and they have repeatedly proposed methods of punishing/criminalizing those who engage in such wrongthink.
Many of us said that there could be no compromise with this. Liberal Bill Kristol doesn’t need to fear the liberal censorship state, because he’s a fellow liberal and is useful for fighting their current political fight, but anyone who is actually opposed to leftwing hegemony and speech criminalization does need to fear them– as they fear us.
Well, we’re now at the point where the left has agreed (funny how they’re always so swift to agree about revolutionary proposals in such a short window of debate, almost as if they have been deciding these things behind closed doors before introducing to the public) that even The President can no longer be permitted to offer his unfiltered arguments to the public.

The 1976 National Emergencies Act gives presidents sweeping authority as well as allowance in federal regulations to declare an “immigration emergency” to deal with an “influx of aliens which either is of such magnitude or exhibits such other characteristics that effective administration of the immigration laws of the United States is beyond the existing capabilities” of immigration authorities “in the affected area or areas.” The basis for such an invocation generally includes the “likelihood of continued growth in the magnitude of the influx,” rising criminal activity, as well as high “demands on law enforcement agencies” and “other circumstances.”
Democrats have not objected to use of this authority regularly by past presidents, including roughly 30 such emergencies that continue to this day. Other statutes afford additional emergency powers. Indeed, a report by the Congressional Research Service in 2007 stated, “Under the powers delegated by such statutes, the president may seize property, organize and control the means of production, seize commodities, assign military forces abroad, institute martial law, seize and control all transportation and communication, regulate the operation of private enterprise, restrict travel, and, in a variety of ways, control the lives of United States citizens.”
Democrats never imagined that the Imperial Presidency would come back and bite them squarely on the butt. They’re used to dealing with Ordinary Republican Politicians, like the Bushes or McCain or Romney, who wouldn’t dare push their power as far as it could legally go. But that was then — and this is now.

So… NASA and the EPA can maintain essential operations with only 5% of their workforce, evolutionary biologists are nonessential drains on the taxpayers, NOAA meteorologists can’t attend the American Meteorological Society convention on the taxpayers’ dime… Maybe I’m just a bit jaded, but how does the word “vital” fit in here? Can you think of a better example of a nonessential government employee than an evolutionary biologist?
The ugly underside of the rock is the assumption that if the government doesn’t fund science then no science will get done. Certainly that has become the expectation among scientists in these degenerate modern times.
