Nearly half of Google workers worldwide are contractors, temps, and vendors (TVCs) and just slightly more than half are full-time employees (FTEs). An internal source, speaking anonymously to The Guardian, just revealed that of about 170,000 people who work at Google, 49.95%, are TVCs and 50.05% are FTEs. As The Guardian reported on Dec. 12, a nascent labor movement within the company led to the leak of a rather awkward document, entitled “The ABCs of TVCs,” which reveals just how seriously Google takes the employment distinctions.
…
There was a two-year cap on contract extensions and a weird caste system that excluded us from meetings, certain cafeterias, the Google campus store, and much more. Most notably, contractors wore red badges that had to be visible at all times and signaled to everyone our lowly position in the system.
Think ‘white people’ and ‘colored people’ in South Africa.

The prospect of a purple and eventually blue Texas thrills progressives who see the Lone Star State as the key to their drive for post-Trump domination. Before draining their champagne glasses and filling their bongs, the coastal crowd should sober up enough to consider what happens if the Texas miracle comes to an end.
Many Republicans, meantime, have come to consider Texas their sovereign territory, a deeply conservative place where even Democrats were generally pro-business and growth was the prevailing religion. This last election ended what remained of that hallucination. In virtually every big metro—the increasingly dominant geography of Texas—the Democrats grabbed control.
The same process has corrupted New Hampshire. Immigrants from high-tax high-regulation states like Massachusetts and Vermont are turning New Hampshire into a clone of the places they fled.

Dozens of retired Los Angeles employees are collecting such generous retirement pay that they exceed pension fund limits set by the Internal Revenue Service, saddling taxpayers with additional costs, a Times data analysis has found.
Their lavish pensions forced the city to establish an “Excess Benefit Plan” to pay what the pension system cannot legally cover, using money that could otherwise be tapped to fix sidewalks, fight homelessness or hire more cops.
In all, the little-known fund has paid $14.6 million to 110 retired employees since 2010, The Times’ analysis showed.
The list of recipients is dominated by former cops and firefighters whose million-dollar payouts from a separate retirement program drove their incomes well over the $220,000 annual limit the IRS allows pension funds to pay.
Jerry Pournelle often said that the purpose of government is to hire and pay government workers. Los Angeles seems to have that nailed.

On 11 December the South African Constitutional Court delivered a scathing judgment against former president Jacob Zuma’s decision in 2014 to support a Mugabe-initiated pseudo-legal maneuver to block a South African Development Community (SADC) tribunal ruling. This court had been constituted at the time of the formation of SADC and was designed to arbitrate disputes within the member states. The founding fathers of the community were explicit in the prohibition of any action taken against any person or entity motivated by race. This worked until Mugabe forcefully evicted 4,000 white farmers on the grounds of their skin color. When Zimbabwean courts were found wanting, the farmers took their case to the SADC tribunal and won. Suddenly a deified “freedom fighter” was conclusively proved to be a vicious and destructive racist, that his actions were illegal, and (all credit to the brave judges) his government was instructed to compensate the dispossessed. This was too much for Mugabe and his regional acolytes, so they simply closed the court and annulled the ruling.

If you listen to management pundits, “collaboration” is all the rage. While the term is a bit fuzzy, what’s usually meant by “collaboration” is 1) plenty of ad-hoc meetings and 2) open-plan offices that increase the likelihood that such meetings take place.
In previous columns, I’ve pointed out that open-plan offices, with all their interruptions, distractions, and noise pollution, are productivity sinkholes. I’ve also pointed out that collaboration tends to penalize the competent who end up doing most of the work.
A recent study published in Applied Psychology has now confirmed that a collaborative work environment can make top performers–the innovators and hard-workers–feel miserable and socially isolated.
Unfortunately, open-plan offices are cheaper than giving each worker his own space, and it’s easier to point to the amount of money saved than to try to evaluate the amount of productivity lost.
‘Diversity’ works the same way. All scientific studies that have been allowed to test the supposed benefits of ‘diversity’ have demonstrated that having a ‘diverse’ workforce (in the Political Correctness sense) actually impairs productivity. But that’s not in line with the Narrative so anybody who tries to say that in public is immediately silenced.

For one thing, prole and even middle class black women do not like halfies with the good hair. “Do not like” does not come close to capturing the level of resentment there. In fact, it is probably even worse to be, like Harris, an exotic-ish halfie with the good hair than if she were just a corn fed Halle Barry type. Now at least Harris is married to a nerdy white guy instead of “taking” a high status black male, but on the other hand he is an investment banking nerdy white guy, so I’m sure there are photos of Harris living it up on jet skis or whatever, in a bikini with her golden brown skin and straight hair.
Audacious Epigone adds:
Because of gerrymandering and the stubborn refusal of non-blacks to live around blacks if they can help it, the Democrat bench has few authentically black blacks on deck for the national batter’s box. This contrasts sharply to the congressional level, where many heavily black urban districts send authentically black blacks to DC. Emmanuel Cleaver can’t win a statewide election in Missouri just as assuredly as he can’t lose a reelection bid in Missouri’s 5th.
When the prep-school halfrican Obama tried to challenge the authentically black Bobby Rush for a congressional seat in 2000, he got crushed because southside blacks wouldn’t vote for a mulatto from Harvard over a former Black Panther. But when Obama ran against Hillary Clinton in 2008, he utterly dominated the black vote, 85%-15%, because he was the blackest thing on offer.

Well, actually, they don’t claim that.
What they do claim is: “Surging levels of greenhouse gases could make people tired, forgetful and stupid.”
Of course they could. But are they? No such claim is made.
But increased levels of carbon dioxide could not just affect office workers but the entire population by the end of the century, according to scientists at University College London.
Again, that weasel-word could.
This is just more climate-change alarmism, ‘journalists’ who ought to know better seizing on tentative research conclusions to justify their Chicken Little agenda.

At present the UK has over 66 million people. I doubt that protests involving less than a thousand people are going to impress anybody whose job it isn’t to report on it as if it were important.
Note the assumption that only the government can solve the climate change problem, implicitly by forcing people into behavior that they would not naturally do.
Note the meta-assumption that every problem is by its nature a political problem that requires political action to solve.

Traditional school systems have a programme of social normalisation, in which children of the same age, regardless of condition or mental ability, are thrown together in the hope that the abnormal can learn to get along with their chronological peers simply through the process of ‘rubbing off’ or imitation. This programme usually bites the dirt along with the child, who is subject to bullying, ostracism and isolation. Parents who are essentially normal, who survived the school system themselves, are often at a loss to deal with the fact that not only is their child dysfunctional but the school itself seems to be out of whack.
— h2g2
One of the most persistent criticisms of homeschooling is that homeschooled children aren’t ‘socialized’ properly, i.e. trained to Play Well With Others. Since most existing schools are the equivalent of primitive tribes in their social structure and activities, I’d say that’s a feature, not a bug. If the supposed supervising adults associated with my high school had known half of what went on when the adults were not in the room, they would have been scared shitless.

In last week’s Power Hour, the Z-Man noted that one major reason Trump gets so little Establishment push back for tangling with China–despite the real dangers involved–is because our elites are legitimately worried about the Middle Kingdom. Crowding out top American colleges, stealing the intellectual property elites live off of, pricing them out of major cities–these are problems the Chinese pose to the cloud people a country like Mexico does not.

Texas and an alliance of 19 states argued to the judge that they’ve been harmed by an increase in the number of people on state-supported insurance rolls. They claimed that when Congress last year repealed the tax penalty for the so-called individual mandate, it eliminated the U.S. Supreme Court’s rationale for finding the ACA constitutional in 2012.
The Texas judge agreed. He likened the debate over which provisions of the law should stand or fail to “watching a slow game of Jenga, each party poking at a different provision to see if the ACA falls.” He also wrote that it’s clear the individual mandate is the linchpin of the law “without marching through every nook and cranny of the ACA’s 900-plus pages.”

The obvious question is: Exactly how does this help migrants? How does it advance whatever agenda these people are pushing? What is it about dance, specifically, that relates to immigration?
The obvious answer is that it’s totally irrelevant — but that’s not the point. The point is that these people have very little scope for virtue-signaling, but their need for virtue-signaling is so compulsive that whatever they actually can do (in this case dance) they do in the hope that it will be credited to them for righteousness. It’s not about helping migrants, it’s about doing something that will allow them to feel good about themselves.

How could any reasonable person oppose diversity and inclusion in the workplace? Answer: Because “diversity and inclusion” in the work context is actually a euphemism for something else.
…
“A desire for equal outcomes among all identity groups, and disadvantaging individuals in overrepresented demographic categories.”
I have yet to see any supporting evidence for the popular proglodyte myth that ‘diversity’ is a strength rather than a weakness. All of the actual studies I’ve seen suggest that working with people who don’t look like you raises questions of trust and coordination rather than otherwise.

A seven-year-old migrant girl died just hours after being taken into the custody of U.S. Border Patrol, suffering from dehydration and exhaustion as a result of the strenuous journey — but a Washington Post headline made it appear as though Border Patrol bore responsibility for her death.
…
But beginning in the fourth paragraph, the Washington Post’s own report refutes the notion that Border Patrol bears responsibility for the girl’s death.
Noting that she began to suffer from seizures just over eight hours after being taken into custody and that her temperature quickly spiked to 105.7 degrees, WaPo reported that emergency responders were called right away and the girl was revived and taken to a hospital. She died within 24 hours of being transported, and Border Patrol records show that she had not been given food or water for several days prior.

Asian-American parents and civil rights groups filed a lawsuit against New York City officials Thursday over a plan that would increase admissions for black and Hispanic students to elite schools in the city.
This diversity & inclusion stuff is all very well and good when cruising the underclass for votes, but let’s not get carried away.
Black and Hispanic students make up 68 percent of the city’s population with 9 percent receiving offers to attend specialized high schools.
That’s because black and Hispanic students can’t be bothered to go to class or study, which is why they don’t qualify.
Asian-American students, however, make up 62 percent of the population at the city’s elite high schools,
Asian-American students have parents that make sure they study and get good grades. Tiger Mothers and all that.
The plan promoted by Mayor Bill de Blasio would set aside 20 percent of seats at each of the elite high schools for students coming from low socioeconomic backgrounds, according to WaPo.
The implication being that they will be admitted despite having not qualified through the entrance exam, i.e. affirmative-action admissions.
“Furthermore, this costly expansion (estimated at $550,000) is just another futile effort by de Blasio to mask his failures to improve K-8 education in black and Hispanic communities: under his watch, math and English proficiency rates among black and Latino students from grades 3 through 8 are less than 50% of performance levels among Asian and Caucasian American students,” the AACE press statement said.
How crass of them to bring that up.
“Our schools are academically stronger when they reflect the diversity of our City,” New York City’s Department of Education (NYCDOE) spokesman Will Mantell told TheDCNF.
Evidence to support this common Lefty fairy tale is never produced, of course. In reality, diversity will very obviously make the schools academically weaker by putting young proto-thugs in the same classrooms as actual students.
