Prizes are awarded on the basis of criteria. Presumably those criteria are connected some way with the reason for the prize. For example, a prize for winning a race is given to the person who runs the fastest, which is innately connected to the nature of a ‘race’.
To assert that we don’t have enough diversity in prize-winners (or race-winners) is to assert that the prizes ought to be awarded on some basis other than the reason for the prize. The ultimate expression of this would be to award the prize based on ‘diversity’ and totally ignoring the actual reason for the prize. Doing so fundamentally ignores the purpose for having a prize in the first place. Prize winners will win prizes for who they are rather than what they do.
It is totally absurd for a site called ‘Wired Science’ to publish so anti-science an article.
Welcome to the Axis of Drivel.

Just as Rush Limbaugh did, from New York.
Maine Gov. Paul LePage announced that he plans to move to Florida to escape income and property taxes, at a Monday press conference.
“I am done with politics. I have done my eight years. It’s time for somebody else,” LePage said Monday, announcing his decision to vacate the state, the Portland Press Herald reported.
Well, if Gillum gets elected Governor of Florida, that haven might disappear.

There is no state law against this at present, and I wouldn’t hold your breath waiting for a one-party state to write one that forbids soliciting campaign cash from state vendors. Chicago politicians may consider themselves experts at extorting cash for pay to play, but Oregon politicians are at the very least their equals. Perhaps extortion might be too harsh a description. Taxpayers are paying for these state vendor contracts, so money laundering might be a kinder description.
Willie Brown was the master of this in California, but every Democrat politician probably has this as a basic skill.

Paul Mirengoff reads this stuff so you don’t have to.
The leftist media insists that President Trump is encouraging anti-Semitism even though he has never made a statement that fairly can be considered anti-Semitic. It relies in part on untenable inferences from statements by Trump that have nothing to do with Jews, and in part on claims that anti-Semitic incidents have risen since Trump became president.
What does the Times usually say about Trump? ‘Without evidence’?
Bellafante (or is it the police?) tactfully declines to say how many of those apprehended for anti-Semitic hate crimes are Muslims and how many are black. We learn, however, of the Muslim livery driver who jumped out of a car, started beating up a Jew, and yelled “Allah.” And we just learned that person who wrote anti-Semitic graffiti all over a synagogue in Brooklyn is an African-American and Democratic activist.
I don’t think you can blame Trump for the Muslim driver’s assault. The same goes for the Democratic activist, though I suppose it’s possible he thought he was helping his Party by contributing to the narrative that Trumpism causes anti-Semitic incidents.
Imagine that.

In the U.S., local cops have an admirable record of not falling for many Hate Hoaxes.
…
On the other hand, cops in Britain appear fairly enthusiastic about persecuting violations of political correctness in social media or somebody saying something rude on a bus. Those are somewhat different than Hate Hoaxes of course. Do British cops do a good job of unraveling Hate Hoaxes?

Bret Stephens, one of the tame “conservatives” at The New York Times, has an op-ed to which my attention was drawn this morning: “Why Aren’t Democrats Walking Away With the Mid-Terms?“.
…
Bret Stephens is a Bobo who believes that “the real threat of the Trump presidency isn’t economic or political catastrophe. It’s moral and institutional corrosion — the debasement of our discourse and the fracturing of our civic bonds.”
Stephens seems not to understand that — in the view of anti-Bobos — civic bonds were fractured long ago by the Bobos who championed school busing, affirmative action, and all that followed under the heading of identity politics, including “open borders”. The anti-Bobos of the North were taken for granted as reliable Democrat voters, largely ignored (by both parties), and then sneered at by Democrats. Hillary Clinton’s characterization of the anti-Bobos (of all regions) as “deplorables” was merely confirmatory, and probably enabled Trump’s victory by putting him over the top in Iowa, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. Trump’s genius has been to speak the language of anti-Bobos and make them feel as if they are valued.

Members of the Black Panther Party marched through the city of Atlanta, strapped with assault rifles and brandishing Stacey Abrams campaign signs.
In a video posted on the group’s Facebook page on Saturday, members of the Black Panther Party are seen marching through the West End neighborhood of Atlanta in support of Stacey Abrams gubernatorial campaign. As they marched, the Black Panthers carried assault rifles and continually shouted slogans such as “black power” and “power to the people.”

Steven Hayward turns over a rock.
There’s a joke that’s been going around for a while that runs: “How do you know someone is a vegan? Because they f—— tell you!” Certainly veganism seems to be more than just a preference for a vegetarian diet; there is a moral unctuousness to it that seems to go hand in hand with a PETA membership card.
Which brings me to Megan McArdle’s column in the Washington Post a couple days ago relating how a food magazine editor was fired for making a joke about vegans, “How Many Vegans Does It Take to Screw Up A Meal?” But McArdle goes on to note that this story is about more than just a joke at the expense of vegans; comedy itself is starting to become a suspect category for the left’s cultural commissars….

Many measures of poverty exist. The official poverty line is used as a guide as to who should get federal assistance. The state where the largest share of people fall below that line is Mississippi; California is roughly in the middle. But the official poverty line is the same in every state and takes no account of different living costs or of public assistance. So in 2011 the Census Bureau came up with a Supplemental Poverty Measure (SPM), which most social scientists think a better way of comparing levels of poverty across the country. By this yardstick, 19% of Californians were poor in the three years 2015, 2016 and 2017, the highest rate in the country excluding the special case of Washington, DC. The national average was 14.1%.
Not coincidentally, California and D.C. are both Democrat one-party areas.

You may well be surprised that Hondurans currently located in Mexico have rights under the U.S. Constitution. The complaint appears to be premature at best. But the reality is that asylum represents a massive loophole in our immigration laws. Asylum is supposed to be available to people who face persecution in their home countries on grounds of religion, race, etc. It was never intended to apply wholesale to entire populations on the ground that their country is poorly governed.
So I thought.

Israel has developed and used a more powerful version of its decade old Stuxnet malware to infect and damage Iranian networks and strategic systems. The new Stuxnet has not received a name (as have earlier Stuxnet successors like Duqu, Gauss and Flame) but the impact was so serious and the rumors and gossip inside Iran so widespread and detailed that the Iranian government admitted at the end of October that there had been an attack but that it “was being controlled.” In Iran that’s government-speak for “we got a major problem and we’d rather not talk about it.”

The problem is with who’s left standing. They are a very large group. Parents have been known to complain. The deans are ready for them: yes, her scores were great, but other people’s scores were even better.
But what if they weren’t? We have a system of college admission that proclaims—shouts—that it is based almost wholly on merit. Yes, it is admitted, there are legacies and athletes and diversity as well, but those who benefit from those categories must also have met very high standards of measured academic ability. Their threshold is also pretty daunting. At our most prestigious schools, this is often true.
And Harvard is at the very least one of our top schools. So what is that lawsuit all about?
As an undergraduate at Yale in the mid-1970s, I was in a seminar taught by Jack Hexter, whom I encourage you to look up, devoted to the writing of history. One of the participants was a Yale Law student, who happened to be black, and we undergraduate were all stunned by how (a) ignorant and (b) incompetent he was. He knew very little history and could barely write a coherent sentence.
