The Camp, Hill, and Woolsey Fires Are Climate Change at Work

13th November 2018

Well, no, they’re just forest fires, exacerbated by government employees kowtowing to environmentalists and failing to manage wild areas properly.

It Has Come to This: Academic Samizdat

13th November 2018

Steven Hayward at Powerline blows the whistle.

We have come to the point where even liberal academics in good standing will feel the wrath of leftist orthodoxy if they depart from the party line. So what to do? Imitate the late Soviet Union, and start a samizdat literature.

I heard several months ago that this new initiative was in the works, but now it is official. A group of scholars from across the political spectrum is launching the Journal of Controversial Ideas, which will publish pseudonymous peer-reviewed articles in a wide range of disciplines, so that authors can write candidly. It is significant, I think, that one of the prime movers behind this is philosopher Peter Singer. Let this sink in a moment—a tenured professor who has advocated the most extreme positions in favor of animal rights and even infanticide thinks academic discourse is stifled by a leftist orthodoxy. When you’ve lost Peter Singer. . .  (Many of the other editors identified so far are left-leaning, though Princeton’s Robert P. George will be on the editorial board.)

California Needs A New Economic Model

13th November 2018

Joel Kotkin is not happy.

Already anointed by The New Yorker as the “head of the resistance,” Gavin Newsom could well think he’s also king of California politics. He can both sell himself as the model of progressive virtue and also lord of the world’s fifth-largest economy, home to three of the world’s most powerful and influential companies.

California, along with New York, epitomizes what the French Marxist economist Thomas Piketty has aptly called “the Brahmin left,” which trades in digits, images and financial transactions. The other side, “the merchant right,” trades in more tangible goods such as cars, steel, oil, gas and food.

Yet here’s the rub: The vast majority of Californians are not entitled Googlers from Stanford who can spend their time obsessing about the climate or the meaning of their sexuality. The Brahmin model has worked well for the top earners, and their offspring, but most Californians were left out of the boom.

The ineffable Mencius Moldbug once mapped our modern social groups in America in terms of the Hindu Varna system (customarily mislabeled ‘caste’), and they fit remarkably well. Truly, there is nothing new under the sun.

Why Won’t Liberals Look at the Evidence On Climate?

12th November 2018

This is a theme that Steve and I have recurred to many times on this site. Today it is voiced by Freeman Dyson, one of the world’s most eminent scientists. Dyson, a theoretical physicist and professor emeritus of Mathematical Physics and Astrophysics at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, is famous among other things for unifying the three versions of quantum electrodynamics. He has been a harsh critic of the slovenly science practiced by climate alarmists.

Why Did Facebook Fire a Top Executive? Hint: It Had Something to Do With Trump

Spike Lee calls Donald Trump’s response to migrant caravan ‘inhumane’  And I’m sure Trump worries about what Spike Lee thinks.

Trump to be investigated by Congress over use of state powers to target media  Good luck with that.

Tom Steyer Lists Trump’s ‘Denial’ Of Climate Change As Justification For Impeachment  Nope, not even close.

French army mocks Trump for skipping visit to First World War cemetery in Paris due to rain  Pretty tough talk from the guys who surrendered.

#StrawManTrump What has Trump tweeted today? The latest Twitter posts from the US President and what they really mean  Where ‘what they really mean’ is code for ‘what I fantasize that they mean’.

Democrats ‘to target 85 subjects’ for Trump investigations – from tax returns to family separation  Which is fine — it’s a waste of their time and taxpayers’ money but keeps their base quiet and does less damage than whatever legislative agenda they would otherwise be pushing. Play-acting for the cameras is about the least harmful thing they could do.

Facebook Fires Pro-Trump Employee After Large Donation

Celebrities attack Trump for inaccurate tweet on California wildfires: ‘This man is demented’  Except, of course, that the tweet wan’t inaccurate; they just disagree with it, and this Voice of the Crust doesn’t hesitate to emit opinion as if it were news.

The War Inside 7-Eleven

12th November 2018

Read it.

The sun hadn’t yet risen over Gurtar Sandhu’s 7-Eleven store near downtown Los Angeles on Jan. 10 when four plainclothes U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents swarmed inside. The place was busy; a lot of Sandhu’s customers are day laborers and other working people who start early. As dozens of customers poured themselves coffee and lined up to pay for morning snacks, the agents flashed badges and told employees to stay put. Three other agents, wearing dark ICE jackets, guarded the entrance, blocking anyone from coming in. The tension was heightened when one cashier darted out the back door into the dawn.

Government employees can make  your life hell if they choose to do so, whether you’ve doing anything illegal or not, simply by the burdens they can unilaterally impose on you in the name of the regulatory state.

White Women Gonna White

12th November 2018

Jim Goad is somewhat irritated.

Last Tuesday’s deeply anticipated/dreaded “Blue Wave” that threatened to engulf the midterm elections turned into an underwhelming Blue Trickle, and white women are getting blamed for it. If you recall, they also got blamed for electing Donald Trump when exit polls suggested that 53% of the Caucasian Sisterhood voted for him.

“White women gonna white,” lamented Elie Mystal, a doughy, smirking black man who makes a living complaining about living in a country that affords him the sort of wealth and comfort that would be unimaginable in his backward, disease-ridden Motherland.

(In case you need an interpreter, “[Blank] gonna [blank]” is one of those ghetto linguistic inanities along the lines of “it is what it is.” By saying that “White women gonna white,” Mystal is saying that white women are going to do stupidly racist and unforgivably selfish things because that’s what white women do. It’s almost as if they can’t help themselves, but maybe if we bark at them and yell at them and relentlessly shame them they’ll realize that we, not they, know what’s best for them, and there’s nothing bigoted or condescending about that at all, so why the hell aren’t they listening to us?)

The Washington Post Is a Partisan Rag, Critics Say

12th November 2018

Read it.

The Washington Post keeps coming up with ways to broadcast anti-Trump screeds in a form that misleadingly suggests its reporting the news honestly. We’ve become familiar with variations of the following locution: “This report is based on interviews with 38 individuals with knowledge of the situation, including senior White House officials.” It allows the Post to pick and choose among the people it talked to and report pretty much whatever it likes — even if most of these people, including all the ones at the White House with first-hand knowledge, said something different.

Now, the Post is attacking Trump in headlines attributing the attack to “critics.” Today, for example, the lead headline on the front page (paper edition) blared “Trump’s absence rankles critics” (a reference to Trump missing a ceremony in France honoring the World War I dead, due to bad weather). The Post has also used this approach to headline writing accuse Trump of racism, among other things.

Critics said lots of unpleasant things about President Obama. I don’t think the Post ever wrote headlines that parroted these attacks and then attributed them to critics. “Obama too anxious to cut deal with Iran, critics say” was never a Post headline, I’m pretty sure.

How Immigration Changes Britain

11th November 2018

Read it.

Almost nothing is discussed as badly in America or Europe as the subject of immigration. And one reason is that it remains almost impossible to have any sensible or rational public discussion of its consequences. Or rather it is eminently possible to have a discussion about the upsides (“diversity,” talent, etc.) but almost impossible to have any rational discussion about its downsides.

That’s because Immigration => Diversity, and Diversity is a good unmixed with any possible bad.

This attitude arises from the proglodyte view of Change. Progress is Good and since Change leads to Progress then Change must be Good as well. Conservatives know that Change doesn’t necessarily lead to Progress and so Change is just as likely to be Bad as Good. A proglodyte will push every button on the control panel in the sure and certain knowledge that the result will be an improvement. A conservative knows that doing so is more than likely going to break something. This is why a society with proglodytes in charge sooner or later degenerates into a dystopia like Zimbabwe or Venezuela or the Soviet Union.

Sailer’s Law of Female Journalism Redux

10th November 2018

Steve Sailer is not yet tired of being correct, which is (unfortunately) not quite the same as winning.

Since 2009, I’ve gotten a lot of mileage out of Sailer’s Law of Female Journalism: “The most heartfelt articles by female journalists tend to be demands that social values be overturned in order that, Come the Revolution, the journalist herself will be considered hotter-looking.”

But female journalists continue to strive tirelessly to make my snark look like a Law of Nature. For example, here’s a colossal new article in the New York Times by a white-looking part-Asian woman editor about how devastating it is for her to look in the mirror in this racist society due to White Privilege.

One of the positive developments of the last few years has been the collapse of respect for the mass media by white people. Blacks always assumed the media was run by “the man” and no one really cares what Hispanics think, so the mass media has always relied on gullible white people. Most whites have always assumed the media was biased in favor of the Left, but now most white think the media is just making stuff up. Older whites still fall for the lies coming out of the magic box, but younger people assume it is all fake news.

AEI: “If the United States had open borders, how many immigrants would come?”

10th November 2018

Steve Sailer fisks some cucks.

As of 2014 perhaps 3/5ths to 2/3rds of all Puerto Ricans lived in the 50 states rather than PR, so this doesn’t seem like a particularly reassuring example. And since 2014, things have gone really badly in PR and maybe we are now up to perhaps 70% of Puerto Ricans being on the mainland (or Hawaii, which has more than a few Puerto Ricans from old sugar cane days). And that’s despite lavish tax breaks and welfare to keep them on the island.

The Democrats benefit from letting PR fall apart via corruption, incompetence, and apathy, so that Puerto Ricans will move to Orlando and vote Democratic. We’ll find out whether that strategy has already tipped Florida blue shortly.

But reproducing Puerto Rico globally doesn’t seem to worry AEI too much …
