Where Do We Go From Here?

6th October 2018

John Hinderaker at Powerline looks at the future.

Brett Kavanaugh will be confirmed to the Supreme Court tomorrow, bringing to a close one of the most appalling episodes in American political history. The Democrats’ shameful treatment of Robert Bork in 1987 has distorted our politics–not just the politics of the Supreme Court–for the last 30 years. But the slanders the Democratic Party directed toward Kavanaugh were, if anything, even more disgraceful. We will feel their impact for many years to come.

So, looking to the future, what are the notable features of our political landscape?

Cultural Studies Hoax Mostly Being Brushed Off as Tiresome BS

5th October 2018

Read it.

All fields have at least a few weak journals. All fields can boast of plenty of lousy journal articles. All fields are embarrassed by occasional frauds. All fields suffer from ideological biases or conflicts of interest that interfere with good scholarship.

But I can’t think of any serious field in which an amateur who’s done a few month’s reading could even produce a plausible parody, let alone a paper that would be taken seriously by dozens of editors and peer reviewers. If that’s all it takes, a PhD is a meaningless five-year waste of time.

Gee, how did that come about?

They can’t be treated as dumping grounds for impassioned mediocrities and then ignored.

If they are, and everyone tacitly agrees to sweep away the whole episode because the hoaxsters didn’t get IRB approval or something, it just gives the game away: these fields exist only to placate troublemakers, and nobody in the serious parts of the university cares about them.

So these fields are basically a parking garage for people who would otherwise just be troublemakers, and whose only utility is that they pad out headcounts in universities who then paid for them through federal student aid programs. Traditional universities who wail and moan about the frauds being perpetrated on unsuspecting students by for-profit vocational schools are essentially doing the same thing in a Clever Plastic Disguise.

Susan Rice Expresses Interest in Challenging Susan Collins for Maine Senate Seat

5th October 2018

Read it.

The only reason Susan Collins has a Senate seat as a Republican is that she doesn’t act like a Republican most of the time. The reason Democrats haven’t made a healthier push against her is because they’d rather have a dependable RINO inside the Senate Republican ranks than Just Another Democrat. It saves them time and effort.

I hope Susan Rice tries it. That will provide a forum in which people can point out all of the illegalities and other unsavory activities Susan Rice has indulged in while under the wing of the Magic Negro. Because her maternal grandparents were Jamaican she is officially ‘black’ although she looks about as black as Kemala Harris. (Ever noticce how Real Black People always love to vote for Nominal Black People who actually look like white people? Why is that?)

Plotting the Demise of the Death Tax

5th October 2018

Read it.

Technically known as the estate tax, the death tax is the penalty that families must pay when a loved one dies and leaves them significant assets. It was created a century ago to help fund World War I. Naturally, it outlasted that conflict.

Proponents make it sound like the death tax affects only the super-rich. But whatever its original intention, that’s not how it operates.

The tax has destroyed countless family-owned businesses over the years. To pay the amount due, surviving members are often essentially forced to liquidate the business or sell big pieces to outsiders.

Superglue Stitches

5th October 2018

Read it.

In 2000, the FDA approved a new version of tissue adhesive for human use, sold as Dermabond. This new composition, octyl-cyanoacrylate, is a longer chain, still more flexible, and possess the yet-unexplained ability to inhibit bacterial growth — a godsend in surgery. It’s strong enough that it will likely replace a lot of suturing altogether someday. Small quantities of octyl-cyanoacrylate are sold to non-medicals for “research purposes” — it’s the genuine stuff, only in dispensers that aren’t sterilized, and therefore not approved for human use (only animal use).

To use any cyanoacrylate on a wound, keep it on the surface layer of skin, not down in the well of the wound – imagine you are taping the top of the wound together. The glue sloughs off by itself in time.

Police Say Murder Victim’s Fitbit Identified Alleged Killer As Stepfather

4th October 2018

Read it.

Police charged 90-year-old Anthony Aiello with murder in California after it was discovered his stepdaughter’s life ended within the 15 minuets he was at her house on Sept. 8.

Karen Navarra, 67, was wearing a Fitbit fitness device when her stepfather, Aiello, made a short trip to her home to deliver homemade biscotti and pizza, The New York Times reported Wednesday. Navarra was found by a co-worker, and her home was reportedly strewn with her blood and pizza. She suffered deep cuts to her head and neck and was found holding a knife in her right hand.

During police questioning, Aiello was confronted with evidence that his stepdaughter died while he was still in her home. Navarra was wearing a Fitbit, the fitness wristband that tracks steps, GPS location, and heart rate. After these functions were explained to him by police, Aiello was told that Navarra’s pulse quickened and then slowed to a stop five minuets before home security cameras recorded him leaving her home.

Let that be a lesson to us all.

Maybe I ought to get an Apple Watch, just in case.

The Big Hack: How China Used a Tiny Chip to Infiltrate U.S. Companies

4th October 2018

Read it.

Nested on the servers’ motherboards, the testers found a tiny microchip, not much bigger than a grain of rice, that wasn’t part of the boards’ original design. Amazon reported the discovery to U.S. authorities, sending a shudder through the intelligence community. Elemental’s servers could be found in Department of Defense data centers, the CIA’s drone operations, and the onboard networks of Navy warships. And Elemental was just one of hundreds of Supermicro customers.

During the ensuing top-secret probe, which remains open more than three years later, investigators determined that the chips allowed the attackers to create a stealth doorway into any network that included the altered machines. Multiple people familiar with the matter say investigators found that the chips had been inserted at factories run by manufacturing subcontractors in China

The Chronicle of Higher Education Whips Out the ‘Fascism’ Smear

A big part of the “progressive” campaign for control over society is to frighten people into believing that non-progressives are a terrible threat. That’s why they keep ranting about fascism’s constant, looming presence in America.  It’s imaginary, but serves their purposes.

A few weeks ago, The Chronicle of Higher Education published an absurd essay by Yale professor Jason Stanley in which he argued that whereas higher education used to be a bulwark against fascism, deplorable Republican politicians are trying to change it so that our colleges will aid and abet their terrible agenda. Along the way, Stanley takes a nasty jab at my organization, the Martin Center.

The Revolutionary Man

4th October 2018

Zman pulls it together.

Radical feminist Andrea Dworkin is credited with coining the phrase “war on women” in 1989, when she first used the phrase in a book introduction. Perhaps sensing she had something useful, she later used it in a book title. Democrat politicians have used it ever since to gaslight single female voters. Given the life of Mx. Dworkin, it is no surprise that the phrase is one of those fine examples of the Opposite Rule of Liberalism. The actual war on women has always been from the cult-Marx radicals of feminism.

I am reliably informed by Yale classmates who knew her that Andrea Dworkin habitually wore overalls.

Republican Voters Are Angry

4th October 2018

Read it.

And rightly so.

A poll by, of all people, National Public Radio shows that the Democrat smear campaign against Judge Brett Kavanaugh has motivated Republican voters ahead of next month’s midterm elections. In July, according to NPR’s polling, Democrats enjoyed a 10-point advantage — 78% to 68% — on the question, of whether the elections are “very important.” In a poll conducted this week, however, 80% of Republicans say the elections are “very important,” compared to 82% of Democrats. In other words, the GOP’s voter intensity has increased by 12 percentage points in less than three months, and only the Kavanaugh confirmation circus can explain this. “The result of hearings, at least in the short run, is the Republican base was awakened,” pollster Lee Miringoff told NPR.
