“How hard can that be? Saying that Nazis are bad,” former President Barack Obama asked a crowd in Illinois last week.
Well, probably no harder than saying the words “radical Islam,” I imagine. Or maybe it’s slightly less difficult than not sending billions of dollars to Holocaust-denying terror regimes that have both the means and intent to murder Jews—in 2018, not 1942. And it’s definitely a lot easier than not meeting, posing, and then smiling for a picture with Louis Farrakhan. But thanks for the lecture.

Notwithstanding the nature of Mr. Trump’s treatment of Mr. Brennan, the gravest threats to free speech in democratic countries now have little or nothing to do with government action (which is what Constitutions serve to restrain). And with few exceptions, public officials now sit as bystanders to the fight over who can say what.
Communists and other totalitarians (such as Muslims) have long recognized that the most secure form of imprisonment is when the prisoner imprisons himself, what Orwell characterized as the avoidance of CrimeThink. Modern technology has allowed political actors to cut free from formal government and work their will through socialization structures. This is why the ‘long march through the institutions’ that Marxists have pursued so successfully.

My question is: What business is it of the mayor’s whether or not people use the library? This strikes me as a telling indicator of the proglodyte tendency to spend far too much time worrying that other people might be spending their time in bad ways, i.e. ways of which the proglodyte doesn’t approve.
The function of a mayor, I think, is to make sure that the taxpayers’ money is spent in an honest, efficient, and effective manner. We do not look to the mayor for ideas on how taxpayer money ought to be spent; that is the job of the city council, which is why the two functions are split. Certainly a mayor can have ideas on what those spending priorities ought to be, and certainly most mayoral candidates run on a ‘platform’ of some sort, but the place where that determination is made is the city council. That is their job.
One of the most ugly characteristics of Democrats is their uncontrollable impulse to stick their noses in other people’s business.

Someone leaked to Breitbart an hour-long video of an “all hands” Google meeting that was held just after the 2016 election. The video features Google’s co-founder, Sergei Brin, its CEO, Sundar Pichai, and numerous other high-ranking “Googlers” speaking in turn about the election’s tragic outcome. It is stunning.
All of the speakers express grief over Donald Trump’s election. All of the speakers assume that every Google employee is a Democrat and is stunned and horrified that Hillary Clinton–the worst and most corrupt presidential candidate in modern history–lost. There is much discussion about what Google can do to reverse the benighted world-wide tide exemplified by Brexit and Trump’s election. The insane doctrine of “white privilege” rears its head.
You really have to see it to believe it. Having suffered through the hour-long cri de cœur–OK, to be fair, there is a huge element of schadenfreude, too, and you will relish much of it–you probably will have several reactions: 1) These people may have certain valuable technical skills, but they aren’t very bright and are unusually lacking in self-awareness. 2) It is remarkable that they can achieve such an extraordinary monoculture in an organization with thousands of employees. It must require vigorous enforcement of right-think. 3) It is easy to see how these uniformly left-wing robots/people seamlessly transitioned into Resisting the duly elected Trump administration.

Chair umpires and other officials are shaken by what they perceive as a lack of official support for chair umpire Carlos Ramos, given that his actions against Serena Williams during Saturday’s US Open women’s final were well within the rules.
“The umpiring fraternity is thoroughly disturbed at being abandoned by the WTA,” Richard Ings, a retired, elite Gold Badge umpire told ESPN.com on Tuesday. “They are all fearful that they could be the next Ramos. They feel that no one has their back when they have to make unpopular calls.”
Ramos cited Williams three times Saturday during her 6-2, 6-4 loss against Naomi Osaka — for getting coaching signals; for breaking her racket, which cost her a point; and for calling Ramos a thief, which cost her a game. The incident has sparked heated reactions, from former and current players to celebrities to the officials themselves.
We live in a world where truth does not matter, rules do not matter, civility does not matter — what matters is the Narrative, and the mob will determine who is the victim and hence the proper victor.

Had California and Germany invested $680 billion into new nuclear power plants instead of renewables like solar and wind farms, the two would already be generating 100% or more of their electricity from clean (low-emissions) energy sources, according to a new analysis by Environmental Progress.
The analysis comes the day before California plays host to a “Global Climate Action Summit,” which makes no mention of nuclear, despite it being the largest source of clean energy in the U.S. and Europe.

Last week’s news underscored growing concerns over the politicization of tech companies. With his inimitable style, President Trump claimed on Twitter that Google shows political bias by skewing the news found in online searches. Relatedly, a group of some 100 conservative-leaning Facebook employees formed an online community to escape the strictures of a “political monoculture” and provide themselves a “safe” place for “ideological diversity” among their 25,000 co-workers.
Good luck with that. They’ll get what James Damore got.
It’s a truism that Silicon Valley leans left, but the average tech millionaire is not easy to pigeonhole ideologically. A revealing, if little-noted, 2017 study from Stanford University compared more than 600 “elite technology company leaders and founders,” 80 percent of them millionaires, with more than “1,100 elite partisan donors” of both political persuasions. The distinctions are revelatory for anyone interested in mapping the future of American politics. “Increasingly, technology entrepreneurs are using their personal wealth and firms’ power to exercise political influence,” the survey’s authors observe. “For example, recent federal candidates have referred to Silicon Valley as a ‘political ATM’.” The study found that 80 percent of tech millionaires overwhelmingly donate to Democrats over Republicans; hardly a surprising finding.
Indeed. The Democrat party is the party of the new clerisy, the establishment upper class, and all of their ‘soak the rich’ rhetoric is just virtue-signalling. The reason that they’re getting involved politically is that they’ve learned the Microsoft Lesson, that if you don’t have guys in Washington and Sacramento looking out for your interests you’re going to be pillaged by the Willie Browns of the world. Modern political life consists of the eaters and the eaten.

A Voice of the Crust relates a modern parable against the latest Heretic and Sinner.
“He’s become the caricature of the rich guy trying to keep people out, and that gives the Coastal Commission a lot of pleasure,” Mr. Pasternak said. But, he added, “I don’t think he’s doing this for money. I really don’t think he’s doing this out of greed.”
“All they said was he has to apply for a permit, and he says, ‘[Expletive] you, I’m not going to apply at all,’” Mr. Pasternak said. “It’s kind of — I mean, he’s awfully sure of himself. You could say he’s principled.”
A grudging admission, to be sure. I have to say I stand with Vinod.
