If you want to understand San Francisco’s self-inflicted housing crisis, look no further than the city’s very first zoning law, commonly known as the Cubic Air Ordinance, which set a disturbing standard for the city’s eventual missteps. Proposed in 1870, during a time of rampant real-estate speculation in a boomtown renowned for its lawlessness, the new law required boarding houses to offer a minimum amount of space per tenant. Officials claimed this would promote safer housing and improve residents’ quality of life, a noble cause for government intervention.

The Other McCain has figured it out.
In a comment on last night’s post, Daniel Freeman described the Democrats’ strategy in the Kavanaugh confirmation process:
Step 1: Present a non-disprovable claim.
Step 2: Demand that it be disproven.
Step 3: ???
Step 4: Profit!
It’s the “Underpants Gnomes” plan, you see.
The Senate Judiciary Committee has scheduled a vote on the Kavanaugh nomination Friday morning. My brother Kirby suggests that Judge Kavanaugh’s accuser will find an excuse to skip Thursday’s hearing.

Victor Davis Hanson lays out what most of us already know.
In our 1984 world, the accused is considered guilty if merely charged, and the accuser is a victim who can ruin a life but must not under any circumstance be made uncomfortable in proving her charges.
Doublespeak abounds. “Victim” solely refers to the accuser, not the accused, who one day was Brett Kavanaugh, a brilliant jurist and model citizen, and the next morning woke up transformed into some sort of Kafkaesque cockroach. The media and political operatives went in a nanosecond from charging that she was groped and “assaulted” to the claim that she was “raped.”
In our 1984, the phrase “must be believed” is doublespeak for “must never face cross-examination.”

ZMan pokes around.
The conventional model for framing Western politics, since the French Revolution, is the Left-Right axis. This dates from when supporters of the king sat to the right of the president in the National Assembly, while supporters of the revolution sat to the left of the president. Ever since, the Left are the radicals of one sort or another, who seek to overturn the present order in favor of something else. On the Right are the defenders of the present order, but also those who seek to restore a past order.
That means radical republicans in the 18th century, like the American Founders, would be on the Left, along side 19th century Marxists or even 21st century queer theorists. In the 18th century, Thomas Jefferson was a radical. In fact, he was a supporter of the French Revolution. It also means that modern Civic Nationalists, who claim allegiance to the Founders vision of republican order, are on the same side as 19th century monarchists and 20th century fascists. It turns out that libertarians are the real Nazis.

Steve Sailer has some fun.
My impression has long been that Bill Gates is, deep down, the Protestant guy appalled by Irish Catholic fecundity in Monty Python’s Meaning of Life. But even if you are Bill Gates, you have to be worried about coming out and saying: There are going to be way too many black people if we don’t do something fast.
Earlier this week, Gates came out of the closet about how worried he is about African population growth in an interview with the UK Telegraph. But now he’s written an op-ed for the NYT that treats the subject so gingerly that most of the commenters don’t seem to have much of a clue what’s Gates is driving at.

If ‘climate change’ were actually a thing, then a good case could be made that the priority of the government ought to be first to deal with a general threat to everybody before problems of individuals or classes of individuals.
But it’s not. It’s the alarmist agenda of certain pseudo-scientists who have taken their particular conceits and turned them into a religious test for the Left.

Gun control advocates often use some version of the phrase “if it saves one life” in order to justify their ineffective proposals. This week, the anti-gun editorial page of the Chicago Sun-Times offered a different take. Fearful that the Right-to-Carry was getting too much good publicity in the wake of an Illinois concealed carry permit holder’s heroic actions, the Sun-Times editorial board felt it necessary to lecture its readers, “One brave rescue of a Cicero cop doesn’t justify concealed guns.”
I am not making this up. I wish I were.

Thirty five years ago, Ronan Farrow got drunk at college, went to a party, and cosied up to a woman he wasn’t married to. How do I know? A woman at the same party thinks she might remember the party, isn’t sure Farrow was there, can’t quite remember what he did (or didn’t) do, but, on the advice of her lawyer and the yellow press, she understands that accusing him now might 1) advance her career and 2) might damage Farrow, whose views she doesn’t like.
In the light of this accusation from someone he never met, Farrow was relieved from his beat poring over other people’s sex lives at The New Yorker, the literary sewer that used to be a magazine. Titters and tongue-clucking all around as the panting masses wait for the next witch to be hauled out, publicly humiliated, and dispensed with. Wot larks.

This is actually an online form that you can fill out. The first question is, “Did you ever, as a teenager or younger man, behave toward women in ways you may now regret? If so, how? And how has that experience stayed with you over the years?” You get 175 words to answer that one.
I wonder: what is the chance the Times will survey women on whether they have ever behaved toward men in ways they now regret? Are we supposed to assume that can’t happen?
Get in tune with the zeitgeist! Men Bad, Women Good!
This is a good example of how Narratives get advanced. Christine Ford’s allegation is almost certainly false, but who cares? The Narrative marches on, regardless.
Indeed it does.

Earlier this month, a federal court invalidated California’s ban on premises advertising relating to handguns (but not other firearms), disparaging the state’s proffered justification for the law as nothing more than “mere speculation and conjecture.”
If the courts are going to disallow ‘speculation and conjecture’ to rule, what shred of the progressive agenda will survive?
