Congress, Baseball, and Fake Statistics

9th August 2018

Read it.

Since I developed the vice of reading the New York Times, I have seen many a daft story, for which the recent controversy about Sarah Jeong can be adduced as Exhibit A. This morning, however, I read the most delightfully bizarre headline I think I have ever encountered: “Sharice Davids Could Become First Lesbian Native American Congresswoman.” She would also thereby be the first lesbian congresswoman from Kansas.

What is at issue here is not homosexuality or racial politics, which I can address elsewhere. My quarrel is with made-up stats.

In the age of the Participation Trophy, this is a not unexpected development.

The Two Lessons We Should Learn From Apple’s Success

9th August 2018

Read it.

First thing to think about is that Jobs was born in 1955. His biological mother, an unwed graduate student, gave birth and arranged for his adoption. This was 18 years before abortion became legal in America by way of Roe v. Wade.

If Jobs was conceived 18 years later, or if Roe v. Wade had become law of the land 18 years earlier, there is some chance that there never would have been a Steve Jobs. The life that would have become Steve Jobs could have been another in the vast sea of abortion statistics. There would be no Macs, iPods or iPhones.

And I would not be comfortably retired now.

Social Media Has Infected Millennials With False Hope

9th August 2018

Read it.

Slacktivism is an urban term referring to the sense of participating in a cause just to feel good with no actual actions taken to fight the problems. This is occurring among millennials. They see a hashtag trending on social media about a social issue, they use it in a tweet that gets a lot of attention, and they feel like their work is done; they never seek out actions to solve the problem.

They mistake Virtue Signaling for actually Doing Something Constructive.

Doomed to failure. Suicide rates will be going up in the next ten years or so.

(Not that there’s anything wrong with that.)

Washington State Considers Legal Action Against NRA Over Branded Insurance Programme

9th August 2018

Read it.

The state’s new investigation into the NRA’s Carry Guard programme, which offers liability insurance for gun owners, comes after New York governor Andrew Cuomo sent a letter to other state governors earlier this week, urging them to investigate whether the NRA’s Carry Guard programme is being sold illegally in their respective states – and to block the sale of products if so.

Mr Kreidler had already ordered a cease and desist for four of the NRA Carry Guard liability insurance products found to be in violation of state law back in April. The state insurance commissioner said in a press release that the new investigation resulted from concerns the NRA was still promoting misleading products.

If he’s worried about ‘misleading products’, he needs to investigate the so-called ‘Democratic Party’.

Dems Duck Peking Traitor Case

9th August 2018

Ace of Spades turns over a rock.

Good morning kids. Lots of things to cover this Thursday but in the lead I want to shine the spotlight on a story that is for sure going to get lost in the sauce, and intentionally so. Because for the media to give it the attention it deserves means it would have to destroy the political party and movement it has been pimping since the birth of the nation (no pun, but still), as well as expose the utter baselessness of the charges against President Trump – The revelations that an aide to Senator Dianne Feinstein, who has been working in her office for the past 20 years, has been spying for the People’s Republic of China. The details of all of this, as you can well imagine, are sketchy at best. At first it was reported he was her driver, and then it came out that he was an aide. Later, we learned that officials knew about the guy but they didn’t prosecute because his activities were political in nature and not espionage (or espionage-espionage, if you will). And the haziness is due in no small part to the desperation by the Dam-Media complex to avoid a scandal that potentially is as huge as Obamagate and Hillary’s emails especially 13 weeks from a midterm election they are desperate to win. And also because it kind of sticks a fork in the whole Russia-Collusion farce which has more forks in it than a bull in a Tijuana matador ring.

Modern Slavery Prosecutions Rise by a Quarter Amid Criticism of Government Crackdown

Islam has no problem with slavery. Never did.

One of the most ironic aspects of modern politics is the number of black people who become Muslim while complaining about white responsibility for slavery, when Muslims (Arabs and others) were among the chief traffickers of slaves from medieval times into the twentieth century.

Armor: Russians Get Schooled In Syria

9th August 2018

Read it.

The Russians came up with several new techniques that they are now teaching to their own troops after the Syrians tried in successfully. One of the key lessons was that even with modern ATGMs a moving vehicle is much harder to hit than a stationary one. Modern fire control systems enable tanks (at least the more modern ones, which the Russians supplied Syria with once Russian troops arrived in Syria in mid-2015). With tanks that can fire accurately on the move the Russians developed the “carousel” maneuver in which attacking tanks adopt a circular formation of up to ten tanks moving around in a circle and firing on targets when tanks are on the side of the circle facing the enemy.

Young Girls Creeped Out by Older Scientists Constantly Trying to Lure Them Into STEM

9th August 2018

Read it.

With responses ranging from “squirming in discomfort” to “completely discouraged from studying science and engineering,” a nationwide poll group of high school-age girls revealed Tuesday that the nation’s young women are being utterly creeped out by scientists twice their age constantly attempting to lure them into the study of science, technology, engineering, and math. “They’re always hanging around our classrooms and sending us targeted messages online—they sometimes even offer us money if we’re into their sort of thing. It’s so desperate,” said 13-year-old Tessa Levin, recounting the several times she and her friends had been approached by the type of much older chemical engineers or web developers who frequent science fairs with the hopes of involving girls in non-profit mentorship programs or computer programming sleepaway camps. “They always try to treat us like we’re special, but the truth is, they’ll go after pretty much any girl under 18 who can draw a simple parallel circuit diagram. They’re clearly trying to groom girls for their weird lifestyle from a young age. At first it was kind of funny, but the more we learn, the more it just seems gross.” The poll also revealed that some scientists also seem to have a thing for young black and latino boys.

From the Onion, of course. But you can see how easy it is to gin up a crisis by the way it’s reported.

Researchers Insert a Spider Web Gene Into the Silkworm

9th August 2018

Read it.

Spider silk is a bit of a dream material, stronger than steel by some measures yet incredibly light and flexible. Obtaining spider silk, however, is a bit of a nightmare, as most spider species are both extremely territorial and prone to cannibalism. While we have managed to identify the genes that are needed to produce silk, inserting those into other species hasn’t worked out especially well, since silk formation depends on fairly precise mixtures of several proteins, as well as how the spider extrudes the fiber.

A Chinese group is now reporting some progress in overcoming at least some of these challenges. Their trick was to insert the genes into a domesticated species that already makes something like spider silk—specifically, the species that gave us the term silk. The new bit of genetic engineering has resulted in a silkworm that produces a hybrid silkworm/spider material that’s not as tough but is a bit stretchier than native spider silk.

The Great White Culture War

9th August 2018

David French does a deep dive.

With each passing year, I grow more convinced that Charles Murray’s Coming Apart and J.D. Vance’s Hillbilly Elegy represent two of the best vehicles for understanding our times. Though they’re not specifically political, they help us understand the profound differences between different white American communities — differences that are often exacerbated in our polarized age.

French makes a good point, that the great battle these days isn’t between whites and non-whites but between Cloud People white and Dirt People whites.

Federal Flood Insurance Is Now a Disaster Itself

8th August 2018

Read it.

An instructive example is the current debate over reauthorization of the National Flood Insurance Program, enacted in 1968. Passage of this bill was in response to escalating premiums on privately issued flood insurance. It was thought that by mandating coverage, the federal government could manage flood insurance more efficiently than the private sector.

After 50 years of experience, this program has run up a $25 billion deficit. Millions of American taxpayers now shoulder the burden of covering this $25 billion shortfall to protect a small percentage of the population, which continues to build and re-build in designated floodplains.

If your house floods out, you ought not to be able to rebuild in the same place and still get any form of insurance, government or private. Otherwise you’re just rewarding stupidity.

The Emmett Till Effect

8th August 2018

Steve Sailer describes it, and its consequences, to great effect.

“Emmett Till” and “white privilege” are mutually reinforcing pieces of the mental architecture of the average NYT reader. If you ever feel twinges of skepticism about the current stress on “white privilege,” just remember how Emmett Till’s murderers got off due to their white privilege and your doubts will recede.

Or if you start to wonder whether the reason we keep hearing over and over about this Eisenhower-era case is that it’s increasingly a man-bites-dog story, just remember how much everybody talks about “white privilege” all the time. So there must be many examples more recent than 1955, but the white male power structure is keeping them a secret. Or something.

Colleges: A Force for Evil

8th August 2018

Walter Williams is not optimistic.

Many of the nation’s colleges have become a force for evil and a focal point for the destruction of traditional American values. The threat to our future lies in the fact that today’s college students are tomorrow’s teachers, professors, judges, attorneys, legislators, and policymakers.

I’m wondering when we’ll see companies, rather than requiring a college degree for a position, will require that applicants not have a college degree before they can be hired. It sounds odd but I think we’ll eventually wind up there.
