The School Shootings That Weren’t

29th August 2018

This spring the U.S. Education Department reported that in the 2015-2016 school year, “nearly 240 schools … reported at least 1 incident involving a school-related shooting.” The number is far higher than most other estimates.

But NPR reached out to every one of those schools repeatedly over the course of three months and found that more than two-thirds of these reported incidents never happened.

And this is NPR, so you know it’s true.

Think Local

29th August 2018

ZMan describes the difference between reality and ideology.

For most of human history, we understood that people are not the same. Different people had different customs, different gods, different material habits and of course, they looked different. When describing the people of a foreign land, writers and storytellers would spend a lot of time describing these differences. Julius Caesar, in his commentaries on the the conquest of Gaul, was at his best describing the looks and dress of the Gauls. It not only made his tale interesting, it made a point. The Gauls were not Romans.

In one of life’s ironies, as the Left is about to impose its belief in the blank slate and extreme egalitarianism on society, science is unearthing contrary evidence on a near daily basis. It’s fair to say we now have a mountain of science supporting the claims made by our side of the great divide, with regards to human diversity. That mountain grows larger with every new bit of evidence from the human sciences.

I remember the gradual process whereby the metaphor for immigrant assimilation changed from ‘the melting pot’ to ‘the mosaic’. Supposedly, rather than all of these foreign cultures fusing into some sort of mixture, everybody would keep his or her own particular culture and just wander around as isolated grains of whatever. The current lie that is taken as dogma by the proglodytes is ‘diversity is our strength’.

Precisely the opposite is true: Diversity is the very definition of weakness. A melting pot produces an alloy, a mixture with qualities not present in the original components; typically, an improvement. A mosaic remains bits of separate stuff stuck together; the slightest pressure on the sticking stuff and the whole thing fragments. The term ‘Balkanization’ is never used as a compliment.

Cynthia Nixon Fights Back — Against ‘Sexist’ Debate Venue Temperatures

28th August 2018

Read it.

Actress-turned-gubernatorial candidate Cynthia Nixon has laid out one very specific demand going into Wednesday’s televised debate with her primary opponent, New York’s incumbent Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo: she wants the temperature in the debate hall of Hofstra University on Long Island raised to 76 degrees for the event.

A top Nixon strategist, Rebecca Katz, reportedly emailed WCBS-TV ahead of the event, suggesting that a failure to agree to that particular temperature setting could be viewed as “sexist.” The New York Times, upon obtaining a copy of that email, reported, “Ms. Katz wrote that working conditions are ‘notoriously sexist when it comes to room temperature, so we just want to make sure we’re all on the same page here’.”

I’m really curious how a temperature can be ‘sexist’. I think it’s more a case of the candidate being ‘moronic’.

Russia! Russia! Russia!

28th August 2018

The Other McCain blows the whistle.

As I’ve been saying for months, the Mueller “investigation” isn’t really an investigation, it’s a cover-up, intended to conceal or distract attention from the illegal means by which corrupt Obama administration operatives sought to sabotage the Trump campaign. As the latest revelations show, however, the so-called “mainstream” media were an integral part of this anti-Trump operation, and so you cannot expect Democrat-controlled organizations like CNN and the Washington Post to tell the public the truth about all this. If all you know is the “news” you get from CNN, you have no idea what actually went on in the manufacturing of the phony “Russian collusion” story.

Against Identity Politics

28th August 2018

Francis Fukuyama turns over a rock.

For the most part, twentieth-century politics was defined by economic issues. On the left, politics centered on workers, trade unions, social welfare programs, and redistributive policies. The right, by contrast, was primarily interested in reducing the size of government and promoting the private sector. Politics today, however, is defined less by economic or ideological concerns than by questions of identity. Now, in many democracies, the left focuses less on creating broad economic equality and more on promoting the interests of a wide variety of marginalized groups, such as ethnic minorities, immigrants and refugees, women, and LGBT people. The right, meanwhile, has redefined its core mission as the patriotic protection of traditional national identity, which is often explicitly connected to race, ethnicity, or religion.

Chicago, 50 Years On

28th August 2018

Read it.

Arthur Herman has a good recollection over at National Review of the climax of the Democratic Party’s disastrous 1968 national convention in Chicago exactly 50 years ago on this date. It was unhappiness with the grassroots of the party that led to the “reforms” that disempowered party bosses and insiders and made the Democratic Party more populist (that’s before “populism” became a dirty word for liberals), resulting in such sterling subsequent nominees as George McGovern, Jimmy Carter, Walter Mondale, and Michael Dukakis.

I remember ’68. It wasn’t a good time.

Another Gun-Free Zone Experiences a Shooting Tragedy

27th August 2018

Read it.

America experienced another tragedy over the weekend — this time in Jacksonville, Florida — and like the overwhelming majority of mass public shootings, Sunday’s incident also occurred in a gun-free zone.

Two bystanders were killed after a gunman opened fired at a Madden 19 Tournament at Jacksonville Landing, an open-air retail center with stores, bars and restaurants. Jacksonville Landing prohibits the possession of any type of firearm, regardless of whether it is carried legally or not (except for by law enforcement), making it a gun-free zone.

“Possession of a weapon, even if legally carried (except by law enforcement officers) is absolutely prohibited on Landing property,” according to the Jacksonville Landing website.

Yeah, I guess that worked out really well for them, didn’t it? If I didn’t have anything better to do I’d make up a bunch of signs that said CRAZY MASS SHOOTERS, GET YOUR VICTIMS HERE! and plant them in front of any establishment advertising itself as a ‘gun free zone’. Maybe they’d get the message.

I’m waiting for somebody wounded at a mass shooting at a ‘gun free zone’ to sue the establishment. That would be entertaining.

The Apotheosis of McCain

27th August 2018

Rush Limbaugh is having a great deal of fun this day playing sound bites of Democrats tongue-bathing McCain (now that he’s dead) in conjunction with what those same Democrats said about him (The New Hitler) when he dared to run for President against the Half-Blood Prince. Once he performed his Republican Duty by losing, he went back to being the war-hero darling of the DemLegHump Media. CNN’s Jake Tapper has admitted that the chief value of McCain’s death is that it provides them with a rhetorical stick with which to beat Trump.

Just as Doonesbury’s Reverend Scott Sloane was the Fighting Young Priest Who Can Talk to the Young, John McCain was the Maverick Republican Who Can Reach Across the Aisle. Like the other members of the RINO Fringe in the Senate, his function was to trash-talk his own party and provide bipartisan cover for whatever silly scheme Democrats had on their menu.

Landmark Trial Reveals ‘Holy Grail’ Diet Pill That Boosts Weight Loss Without Harming Heart

27th August 2018

Read it.

Sold as Belviq in the US since 2013, lorcaserin is the first weight-loss medicine to successfully pass a long-term safety study now required by regulators to stay on the market.

Taken twice a day, the drug is an appetite suppressant that works by stimulating brain chemicals to induce a feeling of fullness.

Appetite suppressants only work to lose weight for people who only eat when they are actually hungry. Most people eat three times a day out of habit, and eat beyond the full point because they were trained by their parents to eat everything in front of them. (Remember the ‘Clean Plate Club’? I do.)

The key to weight control is to stop eating when you stop being hungry, no matter how much food is still uneaten. Yes, you wind up wasting food at first, but you soon adjust your portions to your appetite.

What Mohammed? What Koran? What Mecca?

26th August 2018

Read it.

The following video is an excellent introduction by Dr. Jay Smith to the deconstruction by Western scholars of the Koran, Mohammed, and Islam itself. Using hermeneutics, textual analysis, archaeology, and other modern disciplines, he demonstrates that the three principal elements of Islam could not possibly be factually true in the way they are traditionally expounded:

1. Mohammed
2. The Koran
3. Mecca

The archaeology and relevant historical documents simply do not support the traditions of Islam. Something happened in Arabia between the 7th and 10th centuries, but it certainly wasn’t what is described in the Koran, the Hadith, and the Sira.

Actually, the headline could more accurately be phrased as ‘John McCain and [insert name of Republican President here]: No Love Lost’.

McCain and his fellow semi-Republicans Murkowsky, Snow, Collins, and Graham, would have been in the Good Old Days conservative Democrats; they only reason they’re in the Republican party is that they have no political future in the party of Bernie Sanders, Maxine Waters, and Chuck Schumer, whereas the ‘maverick’ schtick gives them a slim path of opportunity.
