All air traffic control applicants are required to complete the biographical questionnaire. Those who “pass” are deemed eligible. The questionnaire gives more points to an applicant who answers that he has not been employed in the previous three years than it does to an applicant who answers that he has been a pilot or is a veteran with an air traffic control-related military background.

Incumbent New York Democratic Rep. Joseph Crowley, the fourth most powerful Democrat in the House, lost to his Democratic Socialist challenger Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in the New York primary on Tuesday.
Crowley lost with 42.4 percent of the vote to Ocasio-Cortez’s 57.6 percent of the vote with 88 percent of precincts reporting, according to a New York Times report.
Ocasio-Cortez, who is 28 years old, ran on a progressive platform of Medicare for all, a federal jobs guarantee and abolishing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, according to her campaign site. Cortez is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America and she praised the DSA, saying that she is “so honored to have their endorsement” in a June 4 tweet.
Apparently Democrats think that the way back to power is to run to the Left. Good luck with that.
UPDATE: Loser Joe Crowley: “I can’t help that I was born white”
No, but it’s your mistake to be a Democrat.
Steve Sailer’s take: Rep. Joe Crowley (D-San Juan Norte), Retire In Peace
The fourth ranking House Democrat Joe Crowley lost badly in his primary to a 28 year old Puerto Rican socialist lady who wants open borders and free handouts, which sound like quite a combination. (After all, open borders and generous welfare have worked so many wonders for Puerto Rico that practically nobody lives there anymore. So let’s extend the PR Plan to the 50 states. But do we Americans have somewhere else to go the way Puerto Ricans have Orlando? I should check into that …)
But wait, there’s more: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez: 28-year-old socialist Latina woman from Bronx hailed ‘future of Democrats’ after primary defeat of Joe Crowley
The message here appears to be that there is no future for white men in the Democrat Party. Let’s see how that plays out.

Paul Rahe is not afraid to ask the hard questions.
There will be midterm elections in November. It is the perfect time to separate the sheep from the goats and force the Democrats in the House of Representatives to take a stand against the species of incivility advocated by Maxine Waters … or stand in her defense. The people of this country have a right to know where the Democrats stand.

John Hinderaker turns over a rock.
Justice Sotomayor wrote the dissent that Democrats were hoping for. It is a fiery denunciation of President Trump, but one that includes little material relevant to the case. She quotes, at great length, statements that candidate Donald Trump made during the campaign about wanting to restrict all Islamic immigration. One problem, of course, is that the order at issue doesn’t bar all Islamic immigration–it affects only a tiny percentage of it. The fact (if it is a fact) that Trump would have preferred to issue a different order, obviously can’t make the order he did issue unconstitutional.
Justice Sotomayor and Justice Ginsberg, who joined in her dissent, do not shy away from the conclusion that if another president had issued the same order, it would have been valid and constitutional. It is only Donald Trump who can’t issue this proclamation, on account of various statements he made that the justices interpret as being hostile to Islam. If Hillary Clinton had issued the same order, it would have been fine.
I therefore see the Sotomayor opinion (and the Breyer opinion, too, although it is more circumspect) as political, not legal, documents. They reflect the Democratic Party’s continuing refusal to accept the result of the 2016 election. In their view, Donald Trump isn’t really our president: he doesn’t have the powers that any other president would have.
So we have two Justices of the Supreme Court who would have made a blatantly wrong decision for partisan political purposes. I think that’s grounds for impeachment. But that’s me, and I have more testosterone in my hangnail than the whole Republican Congressional delegation.

The robot arm is performing a peculiar kind of Sisyphean task. It hovers over a glistening pile of cooked chicken parts, dips down, and retrieves a single piece. A moment later, it swings around and places the chunk of chicken, ever so gently, into a bento box moving along a conveyor belt.
This robot, controlled by software from a San Francisco–based company called Osaro, is smarter than any you’ve seen before. The software has taught it to pick and place chicken in about five seconds—faster than your average food-processing worker. Within the year, Osaro expects its robots to find work in a Japanese food factory.

A New York Times journalist at the center of questions about media ethics and how information leaked from intelligence services reached new heights Monday after a report from the paper shows the reporter had dated more than one member of the Senate Intelligence Committee.
Ali Watkins, currently with The times, faced scrutiny after a Department of Justice investigation revealed that she was having a romantic relationship with Senate Security staffer James Wolfe, a man around 30 years her senior, while she was working at other outlets like BuzzFeed news and Politico.
Round, round, git around, Ah git around….
While Watkins disclosed her relationship to editors in the past, her reporting on intelligence issues never received a disclaimer about any supposed conflict of interests.
The Daily Caller News Foundation confirmed on June 8 that BuzzFeed News, Watkins’ earlier employer, knew about her relationship with Wolfe but the outlet chose to never disclose this fact at the bottom of any of her reporting.
My, what a surprise. Aren’t you surprised? I’m sure surprised.

Read a review of the BBS program in The Times of London.
For anyone interested in the often fraught relationship between politics and the media, Reporting Trump’s First Year: The Fourth Estate (BBC Two) was a big draw. Documentaries exploring the internal workings of newspapers are nothing new but Liz Garbus’s series about The New York Times promised particularly rich pickings, capturing the embattled mood at the newspaper during the USA’s most turbulent political period in living memory.
I’m sure you can see the elephant in the room as well as I do.
But there was also something missing in Garbus’s account: any sense that a newspaper is made for readers, or anyone other than journalists and wonks, for instance. Or that those working for it might have political agendas of their own.
Oh, say it ain’t so….

It’s summer reading time, we’re told. Apparently people who read nothing more substantial than the back of the cereal box now go to the beach with 1,000-page tomes and settle back to read while squinting and slapping bugs.
But what makes a summer book? It can’t be Russian literature, since that would call for snow. It can’t be something scientific. If you showed up at the beach with “A Brief History of Time,” everyone would kick sand in your face. “Hey, look at the loser, improvin’ his mind! Get him!”
No, it has to be a genre novel, something invariably described as a roller-coaster ride, because everyone remembers how much fun it was to read a book on a roller coaster. So let’s look at some examples of summer beach reading…

John Derbyshire summarizes what we know.
As of last Friday, you’re probably acquainted with the backstory behind Time magazine’s current cover picture of a weeping tot who, according to Time, had been ripped from her mother’s arms.
The true story—uncovered by the British press, of course, not by our own worthless hacks—is that the child comes from a comfortable middle-class family in Honduras; that the child’s mother long fantasized about living in the U.S.A.; and that she at last acted on her fantasy, paying six thousand dollars to people traffickers and heading north without telling her husband, who is left in Honduras with their other three children, aged fourteen to six.[ Honduran father reveals daughter was never separated from her mother, By Daniel Bates and Karen Ruiz , Daily Mail, June 23, 2018]
The husband tells us that to the best of his knowledge child and mother have not been separated … though child and father obviously have, by several hundred miles, at the mother’s initiative.
