Special Interest Groups Want to Slaughter the Lab-Grown Beef Business

14th April 2018

Read it.

Most ‘industries’ are cool with government regulation — they see it as a way to stifle competition and prevent that ole debbil ‘disruption’. (Witness the reaction of cab companies to Uber and Lyft, or hotels and motels to AirBnB.)

This is behind Mark Zuckerberg’s call for government regulation of FaceBook; he (rightly) sees it as a method of locking in FaceBooks effective monopoly on the social media space.

The Left Needs to Chill Out About Christianity

14th April 2018

Read it.

There are things the left really hates, but it seems to me that they hate Christianity more than anything.

This has been demonstrated repeatedly throughout time. Be it booing God at the DNC, or their irrational hatred of politicians that openly show their faith.

The Witch-Hunt for Heretics and Sinners knows no bounds.

We want to pray for those in need, eat our chicken sandwiches, and run our businesses in peace. I wish many on the left felt the same way, but we’re constantly assaulted with evangelist mobs of this or that interest group as they “boo” our God during their political conventions.

“You will be made to care,” says the left.

“Eat mor chicken,” says the Christian.

America’s Sinking Public Pension Plans Are Now $1.4 Trillion Underwater

13th April 2018

According to a new report from the Pew Charitable Trusts, the states collectively carry more than $1.4 trillion in pension debt—and only four states have at least 90 percent of the assets necessary to meet their long-term obligations to retirees. The Pew paper, which is based on states’ 2016 financial reports, shows that pension debt increased by about $295 billion since the previous year, making 2016 the 15th consecutive year in which state-level pension debt increased.

Orange County Cities Are Revolting Against California’s Sanctuary State Law

13th April 2018

Read it.

At least 11 towns in Orange County have taken steps to officially oppose Senate Bill 54, the divisive law that sharply limits cooperation on immigration enforcement between California officials and the federal government.

The opening salvo in the battle between Orange County and Sacramento was fired on March 19 by Los Alamitos, a city of about 12,000. In a 4-1 vote, the council agreed to exempt Los Alamitos from SB54 over concerns the law was forcing local officials to undermine federal law.

State legislators in Sacramento were “bullying local elected officials into violating our oath of office,” council member Warren Kusumoto said at the time.

Though it is Orange County’s smallest city, Los Alamitos proved to be a bellwether for other jurisdictions in the county

Why Undertakers Are Worried

13th April 2018

Read it.

Besides having to offer more diverse services, the trade also faces increased competition in its products. Its roots are in carpentry. “You’d buy an expensive casket and the funeral would be included in the price,” remembers Dan Isard, a funeral consultant in Phoenix, Arizona. The unwritten agreement was that the dead would be treated with dignity and that families would not ask if there was an alternative to the $1,000 or $2,000 coffin, or whether embalming was really needed. The business has something in common with prostitution, reflects Dominic Akyel of the University of Cologne. It is legal (as prostitution is in some places) but taboo, “and certainly not to be discussed or haggled over”.

Once I die, I don’t care what happens to what’s left — although I must mention St. Barbara Monastery, which makes nice plain caskets for the Orthodox.

According to a report in the Guardian, Coleridge’s lead coffin, along with those of his wife Sara, his daughter, his son-in-law and his grandson, were discovered in the crypt of St Michael’s church in Highgate – which was built on the site of a demolished mansion.

Literary pilgrims have travelled to the church for years to pay their respects at a memorial plaque to Coleridge in the church, unaware that his remains were concealed just below the memorial slab inscribed with an epitaph he wrote himself.

They must have it confused with something build from Legos.

The banner, which reads “DISMANTLE WHITENESS AND MISOGYNY ON THIS CAMPUS,” was installed under a highly frequented archway near the school’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. What they’re really raising awareness of is the degree to which college students these days are mind-numbed robots. The ‘conversation’ they want to start consists of them saying SHUT UP and everyone else complying.

Saudis Threaten to Turn Qatar Into an Island

12th April 2018

Read it.

Dubbed the ‘Salwa Canal’, the project is to be funded entirely by private investors from the KSA and UAE and executed by Egyptian firms, building on their experience widening the Suez Canal.

The canal would run from Salwa in the west to Ras Abu Gamys, 37 miles (60 km) to the east. It would be more than 200 yards (200 m) wide and 50-65 feet (15-20 m) deep, and thus be able to accommodate merchant and passenger ships of up to 968 feet (295 m) long and 108 feet (33 m) wide, with a maximum draught of 40 feet (12 m). The estimated cost would be around 2.8 billion Saudi riyals (app. $747 million).

As it is a unilateral project, the canal would run entirely on KSA territory, less than a mile (about 1 km) south of the Saudi-Qatari border. This would leave a strip of Saudi territory on the new island, which the Kingdom aims to use to install a military base, and a dumping site for waste from a nuclear power plant, yet to be built.

That would be amusing.

How We Screwed Up Nuclear Power

12th April 2018

Read it.

“We”, of course, meaning the government.

Half a century ago, nuclear power was on track to out-compete fossil fuels around the globe, which would have reduced the price of electricity, the amount of harmful air pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions associated with climate change. Then came a dramatic slowing of new construction and research into safer and more efficient nuclear reactors.

According to Australian National University researcher Peter Lang, the ’60s and ’70s saw a transition “from rapidly falling costs and accelerating deployment to rapidly rising costs and stalled deployment.” Had the initial trajectory continued, he writes in the journal Energies, nuclear-generated electricity would now be around 10 percent of its current cost.

What happened? Anti-nuclear activism and regulation.

“Firewalls” and “Taint Teams” Do Not Protect Fourth and Sixth Amendment Rights

11th April 2018

Alan Dershowitz on the Cohen raid.

  • The Fourth and Sixth Amendments prohibit government officials from in any way intruding on the privacy of lawyer/client confidential rights of citizens.
  • The very fact that this material is seen or read by a government official constitutes a core violation. It would be the same if the government surreptitiously recorded a confession of a penitent to a priest, or a description of symptoms by a patient to a doctor, or a discussion of their sex life between a husband and wife.
  • The recourses for intrusions on the Fourth and Sixth Amendments are multifold: the victim of the intrusion can sue for damages; he or she can exclude it from use by the government in criminal or civil cases; or the victim can demand the material back. But none of these remedies undo the harm to privacy and confidentiality done to the citizen by the government’s intrusion into his private and confidential affairs.

Clear the Runway: The Fight Over ‘Uber for Planes’ Is Coming to Congress

11th April 2018

Read it.

How does the government screw things up? Let me count the ways….

Long before anyone was talking about the sharing economy, private pilots across the United States were already engaging in it. They used bulletin boards at general aviation airports to advertise planned trips to prospective passengers who might want to come along for the ride and share the costs of the flight.

When drivers do this, it’s called ‘carpooling’ and they get special lanes to drive in and Greenie points that cannot be traded for valuable prizes.

Pilots do that because flying is an expensive hobby. The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association warns would-be aviators to be prepared to spend more than $225 an hour when all flying costs—including fuel, insurance, and airport fees—are included. Since private pilots have to log at least three takeoffs and landings every 90 days to maintain their licenses, there aren’t many viable ways to dodge those costs. So they’ve been sharing costs with passengers since at least the 1960s. For pilots, it’s a crucial method of financing a flying habit. For passengers, it’s an alternative way to reach a destination.

In the age of Uber, it has the potential to be much more. But the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) stands in the way.

In 2014, the FAA shut down attempts to turn those analog billboards into digital ones, ruling that pilots who use online flight-sharing apps would be regulated as “common carriers” like commercial airlines. While that ruling doesn’t directly ban those apps, no private pilot making weekend trips in a single-engine Cessna is going to subject himself or herself to the additional licensing and certification requirements (or mandatory liability insurance) necessary to be a commercial pilot in the eyes of FAA.

In the wake of the agency’s ruling, one of those just-launched apps, FlyteNow, took the federal regulator to court. But last year the U.S. Supreme Court declined to take the case, seemingly grounding the apps for good.

Now Congress has an opportunity to overrule the FAA.

Ghosts of Africa

11th April 2018

Steve Sailer looks at stuff that proglodytes would rather he didn’t.

On the one hand, America’s most sacred value has recently become “diversity,” which is conceptualized as a sort of all-purpose supplement, our vitamin D, that makes everything better. Despite, or more likely because of, all the evidence that demographic diversity generally makes life more awkward, we are constantly lectured that diversity is a magic elixir that make all institutions, including America itself, less divisive.

On the other hand, Americans also tend to act as if the only kind of racial diversity that interests them is blackness. In America, diversity isn’t actually a variety of races, it’s being black.

For example, over the last generation, African-Americans have won a proportional share of acting Oscars, while no American-raised Mexican actor has even been nominated since the 1980s. Yet barely anybody, not even Mexican-Americans, cares much about the latter, while the media got all worked up during the #OscarsSoWhite brouhaha over a supposed black lack. To the American press, diversity demands, in effect, that blacks win all the prizes.

The Ideology of Illegal Immigration

10th April 2018

Victor Davis Hanson lays out some inconvenient truth.

Gang members next door and dead dogs dumped in your yard? Don’t complain, or you’ll be called racist.

Illegal immigration has become so deeply embedded for so long within contemporary power politics, demography, and cultural change, so charged with accusations of racism, nativism, and xenophobia, that we have forgotten its intrinsic contradictions.

We saw a glimpse of reality with the recent “caravan” of Central Americans. With a strong wink and nod from their Mexican hosts, the travelers assumed an intrinsic right to march northward into the United States. Had they done so, they would have confirmed the impression, advanced during the last administration, that the border is porous and that a sovereign United States and its citizenry have scant legal right to secure it.

The makeshift memorial included one card saying the 37-year-old – who had armed himself with a screwdriver for the intrusion – was “too good to walk the earth”. Another, apparently from the Vincent’s daughter, read: “You was the best…you would do anything for your family, especially us girls.”

But the tributes have now been ripped down, with burst balloons, soiled cards and ruined flowers left strewn across the pavement of South Park Crescent, Hither Green.
