Single-Payer Nightmare: No Surgeries For Smokers, Obese In UK

19th October 2017

The chief problem with the government providing your health care is that they then get to dictate your lifestyle choices. I see very little distance from the government health care system deciding that smokers or fat people don’t get medical care to forcing a woman to get an abortion.

He who pays the piper calls the tune, and when your stuff comes from the government you have to dance the way the government tells you.

Taxing and Regulating the Competition

18th October 2017

The Antiplanner blows the whistle.

Here’s a difference between government-run businesses and private businesses: when private businesses face competition, they are forced to innovate to survive. When government-run businesses face competition, they can regulate or tax their competitors out of business.

Now consider the Chicago Transit Authority, which has lost riders in every year since 2012, partly if not mostly because of the growth of Uber and Lyft. Ridesharing has also reduced car rentals (which are taxed by the city) and downtown parking (which is taxes by the city). Although Uber and Lyft also pay taxes to the city, the city estimates it lost a net of $40 million in revenues (including transit fares and vehicle taxes) in 2016. So Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel wants to increase taxes on Uber and Lyft to make up the difference.

Meanwhile, in San Francisco, Ford subsidiary Chariot is running buses in competition with publicly subsidized Muni. This has led to demands that the city “regulate Chariot to save public transit.” The term public in public transit doesn’t refer to ownership; it refers to transport that is available to all of the public. So what they really mean is “regulate privately owned transit to save publicly subsidized transit” because, for some reason, subsidized transit deserves to be “saved” from private competition.

How Donald Trump’s North Korea Rhetoric Could Start a War  It’s amazing how many two-bit scribblers know so much more about how to be President than the guy we actually elected. Makes you wonder where the hell they were during the election. (Oh, right … scribbling.)

CNN’s Van Jones: Trump ‘Transparently Lies’ [VIDEO]  And yet he keeps winning. Why might that be, Van?

San Antonio Spurs Coach Calls Trump A ‘Soulless Coward’

Inside Donald Trump’s ‘adult day-care centre’ with the White House aides who control and coerce the President  This is one of the more entertaining of the plethora of a-priori ‘analyses’ of the Trump White House. (Trump is an ignorant fool THEREFORE he can’t be in control of the White House THEREFORE somebody else must be running things THEREFORE let’s try to figure out who that might be and how they might be operating.) In the old days this was called Building Castles In The Air, but nowadays it’s what passes for ‘journalism’.

NYC Dem Calls Trump A Sadistic Sociopath On Morning Joe I’m sure Trump things the same of NYC Dems.

CNN’s Don Lemon: Trump ‘Jealous’ Of Obama  Because he HAS to be, you know, he just HAS TOBE. Uh-huh.

CNN Reporter: Trump ‘Revels In Culture Wars’ To Unify ‘Largely White’ Base Since the reporter is ‘black’, i.e. sort of a light brown, anybody she doesn’t like has a ‘largely white base’. News flash: Trump’s ‘base’ is unified already — Trump revels in culture wars because he enjoys it, and his base finds it entertaining.

Atlanta Scrambles to Get Out of Expensive Deal It Forgot It Made

17th October 2017

Which is worse: committing to sell off public land at millions below its market value, or not remembering you’d made that commitment in the first place?

That’s the question the Atlanta Housing Authority (AHA) is no doubt asking itself as it tries desperately to get out of a deal it made to sell $138 million of land to a property development company for the recession-era price of $17 million.

The company, Integral, claims it was promised the $120 million discount by former AHA chief Renee Glover in a 2011 agreement. AHA’s current president, Catherine Buell, says she knew nothing about the 2011 deal until Integral tried to make good on it in late 2016, and that the terms are wholly inappropriate.

Ending Economic Apartheid

17th October 2017

Thanks to its greenbelt and slow-growth policies, Boulder, Colorado is the nation’s most-expensive and least-affordable housing market of any city not in a coastal state. As a result, as noted in an op-ed in The Hill, the number of black residents in Boulder declined by 30 percent between 2010 and 2016, leaving less than 1.6 percent of the city with African-American ancestry.

Portland uses the same system to cement its reputation as the Whitest City in America. An airy contrivance of virtue-signaling that has the added (but unstated) benefit of getting rid of the Useless Underclass (black). I guess the system works.

Black Liberation Group Releases New Project For ‘Electoral Justice’ For Black People

17th October 2017

Read it.

It’s amazing the amount of time black people just spend Being Black. When do they have time for real life?

The Electoral Justice Project will consist of two parts. First, the hiring of black organizers called the Electoral Justice League to focus on local strategies and champion certain issues facing the black community. The second part entails a national help desk to reach out and help black organizations with electoral strategies.

Of course, exactly why black people need ‘organizing’ is never stated. I can’t help the feeling that this is just another effort to pay people to go around stirring up trouble. ‘Local strategies’ seems to mean ‘ways we can pressure white people to pay us guilt money’. What ‘certain issues’ are going to be ‘championed’ remains deliciously vague.

The Movement for Black Lives is an umbrella group for over sixty groups that fight for black liberation. The organization released a policy platform last year, calling for an end to the war on black people and a free access to high school for all black Americans.

‘Liberation’ from what? The necessity to work hard, save money, take care of your kids, and spend time relaxing?

What ‘war on black people’? The only ‘war’ I see is the war on white people just for being white.

Man Declares ‘All White People Are Evil,’ Spits In Homeless Man’s Face

Where don’t all black Americans have access to ‘free high school’? The public school system in the United States is devoted to free school through high school for everyone, even illegal immigrants. Any black kid who is willing to study (aye, there’s the rub) can go to high school for free.

You have to wonder how much of this stuff is just made up to have something to do other than real life.

Guantanamo Bay Prisoners ‘Being Left at Death’s Door’ by Trump’s New Hunger Strike Policy

16th October 2017

Read it.

Sounds like a plan.

Look, a ‘hunger strike’ works only if whoever you’re ‘striking’ against can’t afford to let you die.

If that doesn’t apply, a ‘hunger strike’ is only a slow form of suicide.

I suspect that, unlike Obama, Trump really doesn’t give a shit if some jihadist at Gitmo starves himself to death. And I don’t see the people who have been calling him a Nazi and The New Hitler having a lot of influence over him with respect to changing that policy.

So all of the handwringing that will inevitably occur in the DemLegHump Media is just hot air. It worked with previous Establishment politicians, but it won’t work with Trump. This is just another case of the old Crustian playbook not working with someone who is not of the Crust. When will they learn? I suspect never.

After Several Major Tax Increases, Connecticut Still Can’t Make Ends Meet

16th October 2017

Read it.

The rising cost of public employees’ retirement benefits has prompted the state to raise taxes three times in the last eight years. The public employee unions are adamant that the problem can be solved only by more taxation, and they have threatened to sue if any changes are made to the present payouts. Gov. Dannel Malloy and the General Assembly haven’t been able to agree on what to do, leaving the state without a budget for more than 100 days.

The state is $74 billion short of what it needs to fund those retirement benefits and the state’s bonded debt obligations. As of 2014, according to The Wall Street Journal, Connecticut ranked 48th in pension funding, meeting only 50 percent of its obligations. The state is looking at a budget deficit of $3.5 billion, out of a budget of about $19 billion.

The last time Connecticut faced financial difficulties of this size was in 1991. From 1984 and 1990, the cost of state pensions increased by 119 percent, according to The Connecticut Mirror. That led the state to impose its first-ever income tax. But the income tax revenue—$126 billion over the following 25 years—did little to restrain spending, and funding for pension programs is still inadequate. Retirement costs and debt services were 12 percent of the state budget 20 years ago. In this fiscal year, they will be 31 percent.

The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people’s money.

The Bergdahl Deception

16th October 2017

Read it.

Students of ancient history may recall that in May 2014 the Obama administration traded five high-ranking Taliban terrorists held at Guantanamo for Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl. In 2009 Bergdahl had walked off his base and set off a manhunt that proved costly in blood and resources. Taken into custody by the Taliban, he was turned over to the Haqqani network.

President Obama announced Bergdahl’s return in a Rose Garden press conference featuring Bergdahl’s parents. Obama pretended it was a great triumph when it was at best a pitiful reflection of his obsession with closing our detention facility at Guantanamo. (The White House video of Obama’s announcement is posted here.) To add the customary insult to the unusual injury, Obama failed to provide Congress with the mandatory 30 days’ notice about the plans to transfer the Taliban officials from Guantanamo.

Who better than national security adviser Susan Rice to go out and lie about it on Obama’s behalf? Speaking on one of the Sunday gabfests, she earnestly assured us that Bergdahl had been “captured in combat” and “served with honor and distinction.”

Today Bergdahl pleaded guilty to the charges of desertion and misbehavior lodged against him. Sentencing is to occur on October 23. All in all, a case that in its various facets perfectly represents the character of President Obama and his administration.

Salon’s Top ‘Conservative’ List Is Nearly All ‘Never Trump’ Liberals Who Hate the Right

16th October 2017

Read it.

Over the weekend, liberal online magazine Salon put out a highly mockable list of their top “25 Conservatives Actually Worth Following on Twitter.” The story made a splash on social media, because it seemed Salon’s only criteria for being a “worthy conservative” is that you had to be an outspoken “Never-Trumper” and a fierce critic of the right. Brownie points if you support Obamacare and spew profanities at the president.

What didn’t count? Actually being a smart, thoughtful commentator on conservative ideas and a warrior against the liberal media.

Salon’s list is so out-of-touch from what a conservative is, that they even include virulently anti-conservative commentators like CNN’s Ana Navarro and the Washington Post’s Jennifer Rubin.

Well, to Salon, they probably look conservative.

California, Adios!

16th October 2017

Jim Goad in on the road.

I spoke with friends who are planning to leave the state because they’re terrified of saying a positive word about Donald Trump for fear of having their heads smashed in with bike locks. And I don’t blame them, seeing as how the state has thrown a collective conniption ever since he announced his candidacy. Californian radicals threw some of the most violent tantrums at Trump rallies during the entire campaign, and, of course, Berkeley gets incinerated every time someone to the right of Che Guevara tries to make a peep.

If you removed California from the 2016 presidential election, Trump would have smashed Clinton in the Electoral College in a 306-177 rout. He also would have flogged her in the popular vote by nearly 1.5 million.

Behind Trump’s Latest Moves: A Return to Constitutional Government

15th October 2017

Read it.

Do you remember how glum Barak Obama looked after last year’s election? It wasn’t because he liked Hillary Clinton. Instead, he was mourning for the last four years of his administration. He was looking at all his unconstitutional executive orders going down the tube.

Obama kept the Affordable Care Act looking healthy via an extra-constitutional grant of $1 trillion to health-insurance companies. That required congressional approval, and Obama’s decision to bypass Congress was held unconstitutional by a federal court. President Trump’s decision Thursday to halt the bailout makes the litigation moot and represents a return to constitutional government.
