Who Is Winning the Food Delivery War?

10th September 2017

Read it.

This is an interesting ‘space’, as the tech writers say. For some reason, even though I am notorious among my friends for being boring and unadventurous when it comes to food, I am strongly attracted to meal delivery services like Blue Apron. And my native indolence responds to the appeal of Amazon Fresh and Instacart, although the economics don’t work out for two people who eat out more often than not. Still: Interesting times.

America’s Big Educational Problem

9th September 2017

Steve Sailer cuts to the chase.

The big problem is obviously that America is running out white children to use to integrate public schools.

Perhaps progressives will soon demand a court-ordered white child breeding program to increase the number of white children to be drafted into the Integration Corps.

Harriet Harman Brands Jacob Rees-Mogg a ‘Deadbeat Dad’ Following His Admission He Has Never Changed a Nappy

9th September 2017

Read it.

A ‘deadbeat dad’ is somebody who doesn’t support his children, not somebody who plays the beta male at home. All this aside from the fact that people of Rees-Moggs class have servants to do that sort of thing; I doubt that his wife has changed any more ‘nappies’ than Kim Kardashian.

Harriet Harman is a real piece of work — like most Leftists, an unabashed hypocrite.

Here’s what she says: ‘Harman is a committed feminist, having said, “I am in the Labour Party because I am a feminist. I am in the Labour Party because I believe in equality.”‘

Here’s what she does:

In 1996, Harman sent her younger son Joseph to St Olave’s Grammar School, Orpington, a selective grammar school, whereas she had sent her elder son Harry to the Roman Catholic London Oratory School, a grant-maintained school. Harman said of St. Olave’s: “This is a state school that other children in my son’s class will be going to… And admission is open to every child in Southwark irrespective of money or who their parents are”. In fact, no child in Southwark was eligible to apply for admission to St. Olave’s Grammar School, places were solely awarded based on academic ability and only to children from the London Borough of Bromley. No other children from her son’s class or school went to St. Olave’s that year or any other year. Neither did her son have to pass the entrance exam taken by all other pupils.

(This from that notorious right-wing source Wikipedia, so obviously it Can’t Possibly Be True.)

The Tory MP, who has emerged as one of the favourites to become the party’s next leader, quickly responded by saying he would “lose little sleep over Harriet Harman’s disapproval”.

Exactly right. The dogs bark, but the caravan moves on.

Looting And Lawlessness Breaks Out After Irma Barrels Through

9th September 2017

Only to be expected — there are Democrats everywhere (even in Texas, which is why there was looting in Houston after hurricane Harvey).

‘Wait a minute, you have no evidence that these are Democrats.’ Really? Look who favors ‘redistributing income’ from those who earn it to those who don’t (and who make up the ‘Democrat base’).

All Democrats are looters at heart, even when they pretend to be ordinary citizens. When you seen crime breaking out where gangsters live among law-abiding citizens, it’s not too far a stretch to guess who’s behind it.

Attractive People May or May Not Be Better Lawyers, But They Do Get Paid More

9th September 2017

And rightly so.

I should get paid more than my ugly brother, and this has proven to be the case.

Hurricanes Don’t Blow Away Economic Law

9th September 2017

Read it.

The debate over the morality and efficiency of so-called “price gouging” during natural disasters and other emergencies provides a unique opportunity to explore some of the most fundamental ideas in economics. Understanding those ideas is important not just for the economics of emergencies, but for how market economies operate in more normal times and why they are superior to the alternatives.

The biggest advantage of market economies is the way in which they tie together how we decide who will get to purchase and consume goods with the way in which those goods are supplied. Market prices are not only a good way of determining who should get goods. They also work to encourage people to supply more or less of the good depending on how much in demand those goods are.

The laws of economics are not suspended in an emergency, no matter what the laws of politicians attempt to do. When goods are more scarce, they will be costly to obtain, whether those costs are in terms of money or something else. The importance of letting market prices do their job and determining who gets what is that this process is also the way in which we make sure that there is stuff to be allocated in the first place. The only way to make sure we have sufficient production is to let market prices determine consumption.

The Top Three Arguments Against a Universal Basic Income

9th September 2017

Read it.

The first argument, which nobody in these degenerate modern times ever mentions, is that it is fundamentally immoral, because it steals from one group of people in order to give unearned income to another group of people. The primary motivation for this institutionalized theft, in a quasi-democratic state like America, is to buy the votes of the underclass under the Clever Plastic Disguise of Compassion. ‘He who robs Peter to pay Paul can always count on the support of Paul.’

John McCain: The Anti-Trump

9th September 2017

Read it.

For both good and ill, Sen. John McCain of Arizona is the closest the Republican Party has to the opposite of Donald Trump. He is the moral conscience that promises to check the president’s excesses, and he is the hypocritical Washington lifer whose cynical rhetoric and interventionist passions helped create the Trumpian backlash in the first place.

Trump has accomplished more in six months as President than McCain has in 30 years in the Senate.

That ought to tell you all you need to know.

Four of the five refer to proglodyte white women; it’s not surprising that a black guy can’t make distinctions.

Penn Law Prof. Amy Wax on Her Controversial ‘Return to Cultural Norms’ Editorial

8th September 2017

Read it.

University of Pennsylvania law professor Amy Wax argued in an editorial that many of the problems plaguing American society—opioid abuse, unemployment, inner-city violence—can be traced to “the breakdown of the country’s bourgeois culture.”

Wax and her co-author suggested the “re-embrace” of cultural norms such as education, marriage before children, and respect for authority by Americans would “significantly reduce society’s pathologies.”

The firestorm that followed the editorial’s publication culminated in 33 members of the Penn Law faculty publicly denouncing Wax in an open letter published in The Daily Pennsylvanian. The professors did not engage Wax’s arguments on the merits, but instead spoke of their concern for an ideal educational experience in which people “respect one another without bias or stereotype.”

In other words, she was subjected to a Two Minute Hate for ThoughtCrime by those who love Big Brother.

Not really news, but a useful reminder.

Houston’s Anarchic Zoning Laws Are an Affront to Sim City

8th September 2017

Read it.

Recently Almighty God smote the city of Houston as punishment for its pathetic lack of zoning laws. I am an expert in zoning laws, having spent roughly 4,000 hours playing Sim City in high school instead of losing my virginity.

Going forward, Houston can either embrace zoning and place itself in the steady hands of technocrats who designate where bodegas, trailer parks and whatnot go, or it can stick with the present organic model, letting a bunch of mouth-breathing humans organize the city from the bottom up.

I know what Sim City would do.

Turn-based strategy games typically follow the Centrally Planned Economy of which the Soviets were so fond. That doesn’t really train you for real life, unless your ambition is to become a Faceless Bureaucrat in some future Democrat Oceania. But they are a lot of fun, and (among other things) demonstrate quite plainly that a centrally planned society will crash & burn nine times out of ten, and the tenth time is still pretty grim.

Government Barriers to Private Solutions

7th September 2017

Americans are witnessing the power of private individuals and businesses to solve pressing problems stemming from Hurricane Harvey. From the boaters and monster truck drivers engaged in search and rescue operations to local stores opening their facilities to displaced families, there’s no shortage of examples of private individuals and businesses stepping in to assist Houston in its recovery.

It’s a good thing the private sector didn’t wait for the Federal Emergency Management Agency to do all the work, because the government would have been unable to handle everything on its own. It’s true of many disasters. Recall the tremendous support during the Katrina disaster of 2005. The American people stood on their own as an example of endurance and generosity—even more remarkable than the federal, state and local governments’ responses.

Today’s SJW Is Tomorrow’s Obergruppenfuhrer

7th September 2017

Severian does some analysis.

As Marxism is Calvinism minus God, so modern “social justice” ideology is Marxism minus Marx.

Calvinism’s two fundamental tenets are:

  1. mankind’s total depravity, and
  2. predestination

Only a tiny fraction of mankind is destined to be Saved; you’ll know you’re one of them if you hate the rest of humanity almost as much as you hate yourself.  Since this is not a psychologically sustainable creed, even for such world-class haters as the Puritans, in practice Calvinism was endless, frantic displacement activity – the famous “Protestant work ethic.”  Drop God, and Puritans become Yankees — dour, hectoring pharisees who call you a whore while they’re fucking you over to make a few bucks.

Lessons From the Bear

7th September 2017

ZMan looks at the New Russian Enemy (not to be confused with the Old Soviet Enemy, which wasn’t cool).

For the last few years, the American ruling class has been obsessed with Russia. The Bear Scare in DC over Trump’s alleged ties to Putin is just one ridiculous element to the obsession.  At some level, even the dullards in the media know it is nonsense, but the Cloud People are convinced that the public shares their hatred of the Russians. China and Israel are much more involved in our elections, but they are not suitable bogeymen, in the minds of our betters. To them, the Russians are the scariest of scary monsters.

The Russia-Trump story is just a sideshow, of course. The neocon insistence that we start World War 3 over Ukraine is much more representative of the ruling elite’s hatred for the Russians. Steve Sailer has done yeoman’s work documenting the neocon warmonger’s efforts to stoke the fires of Russophobia. It’s not just the neocons. The Left has gone down a similar path, accusing Putin of being the new Hitler and claiming he has plans to invade Europe. The public face of the ruling elite is sure that Putin is very bad.
