Sawtooth swings—up-and-down ripples found in everything from stock prices on Wall Street to ocean waves—occur periodically in the temperature and density of the plasma that fuels fusion reactions in doughnut-shaped facilities called tokamaks. These swings can sometimes combine with other instabilities in the plasma to produce a perfect storm that halts the reactions. However, some plasmas are free of sawtooth gyrations thanks to a mechanism that has long puzzled physicists.
Researchers at the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) have recently produced complex simulations of the process that may show the physics behind this mechanism, which is called “magnetic flux pumping.” Unraveling the process could advance the development of fusion energy.
Dr. Krebs obviously has good genes. I hope she plans on having offspring that don’t speak Turkish as their first language.

Mitochondria are tiny organelles that fuel the operation of the cell, and they are among the first parts of the cell to die when it is deprived of oxygen-rich blood. Once they are lost, the cell itself dies.
But a series of experiments has found that fresh mitochondria can revive flagging cells and enable them to quickly recover.

Mexican President-elect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador is planning to create a specialized border force to combat illegal immigration across Mexico’s borders, according to his hand-picked security chief.
The new force is aimed at stanching the flow of illegal immigrants and contraband from Central America and will also be deployed to Mexico’s northern border, Alfonso Durazo said, according to Bloomberg. It is part of Lopez Obrador’s broader strategy against regional violence, corruption and poverty.
No doubt special busses will be provided to carry them straight to the U.S. border.

The world’s largest analysis of so-called “jumping genes” has revealed the crucial role of an element known as L1, which the new data shows entered humans about 150 million years ago.
The foreign piece of coding has proved particularly dynamic and is responsible for many of the accelerated changes in human evolution since then.
However, without it humans would be free from the crucial genetic mutations which cause many deadly cancers.

The last time we looked at Brightline, Florida’s private moderate-speed rail line from Miami to West Palm Beach, it had killed three people before even opening for business. Since then it has killed five more. While you might think that people will learn not to cross the tracks in front of fast passenger trains, it turns out that freight trains on the Florida East Coast Railway (which owns Brightline) have consistently killed about two people per month for the last several years.
This helps explain why some Florida residents are vehemently opposed to Brightline’s plans to extend service to Orlando. So far, opponents have been unable to stop the train in the courts.

Incumbent New York Democratic Rep. Joseph Crowley, the fourth most powerful Democrat in the House, lost to his Democratic Socialist challenger Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in the New York primary on Tuesday.
Crowley lost with 42.4 percent of the vote to Ocasio-Cortez’s 57.6 percent of the vote with 88 percent of precincts reporting, according to a New York Times report.
Ocasio-Cortez, who is 28 years old, ran on a progressive platform of Medicare for all, a federal jobs guarantee and abolishing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, according to her campaign site. Cortez is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America and she praised the DSA, saying that she is “so honored to have their endorsement” in a June 4 tweet.
Apparently Democrats think that the way back to power is to run to the Left. Good luck with that.
UPDATE: Loser Joe Crowley: “I can’t help that I was born white”
No, but it’s your mistake to be a Democrat.
Steve Sailer’s take: Rep. Joe Crowley (D-San Juan Norte), Retire In Peace
The fourth ranking House Democrat Joe Crowley lost badly in his primary to a 28 year old Puerto Rican socialist lady who wants open borders and free handouts, which sound like quite a combination. (After all, open borders and generous welfare have worked so many wonders for Puerto Rico that practically nobody lives there anymore. So let’s extend the PR Plan to the 50 states. But do we Americans have somewhere else to go the way Puerto Ricans have Orlando? I should check into that …)
But wait, there’s more: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez: 28-year-old socialist Latina woman from Bronx hailed ‘future of Democrats’ after primary defeat of Joe Crowley
The message here appears to be that there is no future for white men in the Democrat Party. Let’s see how that plays out.

California has long had a collection of courts that are accustomed to weaken, sometimes to the point of invisibility, the traditional notion that you have to show that a particular party caused a particular injury before you can recover from them. The robot arm is performing a peculiar kind of Sisyphean task. It hovers over a glistening pile of cooked chicken parts, dips down, and retrieves a single piece. A moment later, it swings around and places the chunk of chicken, ever so gently, into a bento box moving along a conveyor belt.
This robot, controlled by software from a San Francisco–based company called Osaro, is smarter than any you’ve seen before. The software has taught it to pick and place chicken in about five seconds—faster than your average food-processing worker. Within the year, Osaro expects its robots to find work in a Japanese food factory.

I dearly love classic American breakfast food. I delight in the kind of cheap hot breakfast you get at humble roadside diners. I think it’s one of the glories of our folk cuisine and will cheerfully eat it any time of the day or night.
I posted a fancy breakfast-for-two recipe a while back (Eggs a la ESR). What follows is the slightly plainer breakfast I make for myself almost every morning. It’s the stable result of a decades-long optimization process – I haven’t found a way to improve it in years.
