Eighteen years ago, Rashin Soodmand’s father was hanged in Iran for converting to Christianity. Now her brother is in a Mashad jail, and expects to be executed under new religious laws brought in this summer. Alasdair Palmer reports.

The artist, who has shown at Ronnie Wood’s Scream gallery, has a new exhibition with a headline picture showing a Muslim woman cradling a pig.
I’m curious as to how one can tell, at sight, that it’s “a Muslim woman”. Since it’s “cradling a pig”, I strongly suggest that it is not, in fact, “a Muslim woman”.
Maple, 23, who was brought up as a Muslim, has already evoked Islamic wrath. Her exhibition at Rolling Stone Wood’s gallery earlier this year depicted Muslim women in provocative poses, including one suggestively sucking on a banana.
Apparently she just wants to be offensive. Well, Muslims have a way of dealing with that. Unlike Christians, they aren’t a religion of peace.

The greater point is not the difficulties that Pakistan has in governing these areas — after all, Pakistan exists because the British were too cowardly to resist those who demanded a tribal, religion-based state of their own in 1947, so there’s a permanent contradiction here — but that these areas are government by hostes humani generis, enemies of mankind. Until the world wakes up to the fact that the problem is not individual Muslims but rather the totalitarian ideology of Islam itself, there will always be a problem.

Yaacov ben Moshe draws an analogy — a damned good one.
My original thought was to draw a superficial comparison. I wanted to ask (especially of the feminists and people of the left) why, if it is so obvious to everyone that the common and well-documented cycle of pathological denial, minimization, deflection and projection that domestic partner abusers employ to keep control of their victims and to avoid punishment for their episodes of violence must be met by confrontation or, at the very least, the safe escape of the victim, can’t they recognize the need for confrontation and punishment for the analogous behavior by the Arab/Muslim world against Israel.

If Muslims have no trouble at all being “as American as apple pie” then surely they have no trouble viewing the defining document of the American polity, the Constitution of the United States, as worthy of their complete loyalty. And that includes, of course, the guarantees of individual rights in the Bill of Rights. And since the Bill of Rights is so very close, in so many of its key provisions — freedom of speech, freedom of conscience (which naturally includes the right to apostatize) — to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, can we conclude that American-as-apple-pie American Muslims find it puzzling that all of the Muslim countries (save for the Shah’s Iran, and most temporarily and temporizingly) have failed to subscribe to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and instead have concocted a Muslim version, the so-called Cairo Declaration, which in every essential respect, involving individual rights, fatally vitiates the original, Universal Declaration?
Reminder for the dimwitted: Islam is an oppressive totalitarian ideology with which no co-existence is possible.

Used to be that European navies, especially the British, kept piracy suppressed. Apparently that’s not an option any more.
“Somalia has no central government. We are worried that more may join the pirates to hijack ships because it’s very lucrative and there is no deterrent,” said Noel Choong of the International Maritime Bureau.
And these pirates, being Somalis, are probably … what? Presbyterians? Methodists?
“The United Nations is the only agency that can stop this menace,” said Mr Choong.
Oh, right. They’ve been such an effective force for peace in the past. Ask the corpses in Rwanda and Bosnia.

Robert Spencer reports that “the MSA of the University of Southern California became a focal point of this effort [to repudiate the genocidal hadith about Muslims killing Jews to bring on the end times] because it hosts a major online hadith collection here, which of course included the genocidal hadith. When this was brought to the attention of USA Provost, C. L. Max Nikias, he declared that ‘the passage cited is truly despicable…The passage in the Hadith that you brought to our attention violates the USC Principles of Community, and it has no place on a USC website.’ Said Nikias: ‘I have ordered that the passage be removed.’ You can see a pdf of his letter here. The USC MSA complied.”
There’s respect for scholarship.
That Hadith may have been taken off the website of the Muslim Students Association. But, like hundreds of similar Hadith, it has not been removed from the minds of Muslims. It has not been removed from the collections of the most authoritative muhaddithin or from this list of those hadiths that are often labeled as among the most “authentic.”

Most people think of clubs as recreational groups, but Laitin and Berman are using a more subtle definition. Clubs are groups that tend to be selective about their members. Unlike political parties and book-reading groups, which allow anyone to join, clubs make it difficult for people to sign up. And once admitted, members must make personal sacrifices to stay. In the case of an exclusive golf club, the sacrifice might involve paying sizable dues. In the case of some religious orders, would-be members might have to go through lengthy periods of initiation.
The “club model” of terrorism explains why cogs such as Hamdan stay loyal. Across all kinds of clubs, when members make sacrifices, they are much more likely to become intensely loyal to fellow members. Berman and Laitin think this is because the sacrifices that members make to join a club reduce their value outside the club. If you devote years to learning a religious text, that knowledge can give you social cachet within your club, but your effort counts for little outside the club.

MECCA, Saudi Arabia — Badr al-Hasnani was 18 when he got into a fight with a soccer rival and fatally stabbed him. He confessed and was sentenced to death by beheading, as prescribed by sharia, or Islamic law.
For more than two years, Hasnani has been in a juvenile detention center awaiting execution while his family has tried to save him.
The parents of the victim, Majid al-Mahmoudi, have three options under sharia: to demand punishment, to spare Hasnani’s life to receive blessings from God, or to grant clemency in exchange for diyah, or blood money.
When I was a kid, I always wondered what it would be like to go back to the Middle Ages, only taking modern technology with me. Little did I know that I could do that today, by visiting Saudi Arabia. It’s the 7th century, with AK-47s.
The Mahmoudis agreed to accept diyah, setting the sum at $2 million in cash, much more than Hasnani’s family can afford.
I guess “blessings from God” don’t compare to cold cash in Muslim lands. Perhaps they aren’t so medieval after all.
