One of the most popular articles 15 years ago talked about the problem of the loud BEEP-BEEP sound made by heavy equipment backing up. This sound travels for huge distances and is the bane of everybody who is anywhere near construction, which is a lot of people, a lot of the time. The reason the blog post is popular is a lot of people come looking for solutions.

The noise is there for a reason of course, a large fraction of workplace deaths are people crushed by equipment backing up. Nobody wants to make that easier to happen.

A company called Brigade came up with a solution in 2000 and patented it. Their solution was simple. Instead of a pure, penetrating beep tone, they use a broad spectrum white-noise or pink-noise pulse. That pulse is very obvious to somebody beside the truck, but it fades into the background noise very quickly and so doesn’t travel to people who don’t need to hear it. Brigade also says the tone can be heard better with less energy, and people are better able to determine the direction it is coming from.

Those who first mandated the beep thought it was good that it was annoying and impossible to ignore — and thus went for a distance. Because it “travels” like this, on any construction site (or near one) you are hearing them all the time. You become used to them and even start to ignore them, and that is why people still get crushed.

Apple’s AirTags are again making headlines for being involved in a stalking incident. According to a report from local news outlet WGRZ, officers from the West Seneca Police Department in New York are warning that AirTags have been involved in a pair of alleged stalking cases over the last month…

In the first instance, which occurred last month, a woman went to the West Seneca Police Department after her iPhone presented a notification about an AirTag found moving with her. In this situation, officers found an AirTag “under the bumper of the woman’s vehicle.”

In the second instance this week, a different woman received the same notification on her iPhone. She then went to the police department, but officers were unable to locate an AirTag.

According to a Fox 2 Detroit report, Nelson visited the Great Lakes Crossing shopping center in Auburn Hills, where he spent about two hours. After departing, he got a notification on his phone that informed him he was being tracked by an unknown AirTag.

Nelson was able to tap on the notification, and his iPhone provided him with the option to play a sound on the AirTag, which is one of the safety features that Apple has made available in addition to the tracking notifications. Following the sound the AirTag emitted, Nelson found it under the drain cap in the trunk of his car, which had required the thieves to unscrew the cap and place it inside.

I wonder if this is a marketing trick by Apple? If you’ve got an iPhone, it will notify you of this sort of thing; supposedly Android phones will do the same, but I’d hate to depend on that.

If this happened to me, the first place I’d drive to would be a police station. Fortunately, nobody ever wanted to steal a Hyundai, so I’m safe.

The resignation of Beverly Gage, professor of history at Yale and director of the Brady-Johnson Grand Strategy Program, is the great brouhaha of the last weekend.

You can read the specifics in this New York Times article; the short version is that Nicholas Brady, a former Treasury Secretary from the Bush senior days and one of two mega-donors funding the program, objected to an article written by a program professor condemning Trump for demagoguery. This caused him and Charles Johnson, who together endowed hundreds of millions of dollars to Yale to create and support the program, to look closer at its current curricula. Brady and Johnson did not like what they found and have been using various legal mechanisms to try and either change the way the course is taught or pull their money from the program.

My point is that media bias is such that journalists will never use the words “lesbian” and “murder” in the same story, unless a lesbian is a victim of murder. The belief that journalists must always act the part of publicity agents for the “LGBTQ community,” results in a one-sided portrayal of gay life — everything’s wonderful and everybody’s happy under the rainbow flag — which is just unrealistic. So when I get a story like this (and thanks to the regular reader who emailed me the tip), it’s my duty to give it an appropriate headline, for the sake of balance.

U.S. drug agents are expanding operations in China – six years after America’s largest trading partner and global rival emerged as the main source of chemicals used to make highly lethal fentanyl. It’s now claiming 65,000 American lives a year.

The small crew of about a dozen Drug Enforcement Administration agents, including those in new outposts in Shanghai and Guangzhou, is nearly double the number in 2018. They face what seems like mission impossible: collaborating with Chinese agents to try to bust traffickers hidden somewhere in a sprawling export supply chain that’s linked to 160,000 companies.

“It’s such a massive chemical industry, and then there are layer upon layer of traders, brokers and freight forwarders,” says Russ Holske, the DEA’s director for the Far East, who set up the new offices in China before he retired. “It’s a daunting challenge.”

If ignorance is bliss, the Western world should be ecstatic. Even as colleges churn out degrees and collect fees, and technology makes information instantly accessible, the basic level of literacy, as measured by such things as reading books and acquainting oneself with the past, is in a precipitous decline. Rather than building a vital world with our technological culture, we are repeating the memes of feudal times, driven by illiteracy, bias and a rejection of the West’s past.

Over half of American adults have a reading level below the equivalent of sixth-grade level (11- to 12-year-olds), and book reading outside of school or work among the young in particular has declined markedly. A survey conducted in 2014 found slightly over half of American children saying they liked to read books ‘for fun’, down from 60 per cent in 2010. This is not just an American trend. A landmark study by University College London tracked 11,000 children born in 2000 up to age 14 and found that only one in 10 ever did any reading in their spare time as teenagers. The Covid-related lockdowns, notes one recent UN study, raised the number of children experiencing reading difficulties from 460million to 584million.

But the system suddenly disengaged high beam and switched to low beam, for no obvious reason. There was no oncoming traffic and the system shouldn’t react to the reflective markings since they’ve been visible by the side of the road all along.

But in that movie, violent criminals only had one night each year to run wild. Unfortunately, in America today they are running wild every single night.
