Actually, the best way to avoid living with your parents is to join the military, although I suspect some would count that as ‘the cure worse than the disease’.

The conventional wisdom is that ‘primitive’ societies, as they become more industrialized and affluent, will in turn come more and more to resemble the Enlightened West. Well, it ain’t necessarily so.

During the early stages of the “pandemic”, I experienced instances of rationing in supermarkets. The most prominent examples were toilet paper, hand soap, and hand sanitizer, but rice, pasta, and other foodstuffs were also affected. The consumer was advised that there would be a limit on the number of each item that he could purchase on any given trip to the grocery store.
Last week I noticed the same thing with butter. Customers were told that they could only purchase one (or two) items of each butter product sold by the store.
Similar rationing has now appeared in Germany. According to the following report, the war in Ukraine will only make matters worse.

It is hard not to be cynical about “the media” these days, especially if you work in it. Spend any significant amount of time reading newspapers and magazines, watching cable news, or following discussions on Twitter, and you notice that a great deal of what is written and broadcast has a drearily predictable quality. Indeed, discrete events seem almost irrelevant except insofar as they can be slotted into pre-existing storylines.
Take the debates surrounding the trucker protests in Ottawa. The mainstream press, by and large, has attempted to assimilate the protests into categories familiar from the Trump years.
According to Politico, “far-Right” truckers, some of them sporting “Confederate and Nazi flags”, have “wreaked havoc on Canadian cities”. In the Guardian, one writer warned that the “siege of Ottawa” was an “astroturfed movement funded by a global network of highly organised far-Right groups and amplified by Facebook’s misinformation machine.” Slate, after dropping the trigger words “militia”, “hate”, “extremist”, and “Nazi”, called the protests an “armed occupation of a G-7 capital”. All linked the truckers with the domestic threat posed by Fox News, the Republican Party, and the American far-Right.

To young people living in democracies, authoritarianism may seem like a long-forgotten part of their country’s history. For as long as they can remember, their fellow citizens have had the right to voice their opinion and to organize freely, political parties have competed in meaningful elections, and the legislature and courts have checked their governments’ actions.
But these experiences are far from universal. Many countries are not democracies; and almost all countries that are democratic are younger than a lifetime. This means that for most people, life under authoritarianism is either their current experience, or they remember a time when it was.

What’s happening in Massachusetts mirrors a broader battle over who has the “right to repair” increasingly complex electronic products — from iPhones and farm tractors to the family car.
About 75% of Massachusetts voters sided with the auto repair industry in 2020 by passing a ballot initiative that’s supposed to allow car owners and their preferred auto shops to more easily peek into a car’s trove of online data. Automakers have been fighting it in court ever since.
And two of them, Subaru and Kia, said that rather than run afoul of the new law, they would disable their wireless “telematics” systems from new models in the state. Car buyers and dealerships have been feeling the effects.
The Hyundai system is called BlueLink and it allows one to do some amazing stuff. I don’t use even a third of it, but it’s nice knowing that they’re available. The ability to remotely start and de-ice the car is worth a lot in winter. This strikes me as just dog-in-the-manger attitude on the part of the manufacturers.

As I got to know these people, I had many conversations during which I tried to advise them on how to avoid these difficult circumstances in the future. I was often surprised to discover that they already knew full well what it would take to avoid these circumstances in the future. But they had no intention at all of modifying their behavior for the simple reason that they preferred the inconvenience of arrest to the discipline of managing their own affairs.
And it wasn’t even a matter of the money. The modest payment plan for their traffic citations, which would have been acceptable to the city, could have often been funded for less than they spent in one week on cigarettes. To say nothing of the money they spent on weed.
It also wasn’t the case that they robotically went about their lives without an explicit point of view about their choices. They almost always had a very well-developed worldview that informed their choices and, more to the point, they were conscious of what it was and could readily articulate it.
Many people are criminals because they prefer to be criminals. They have a choice and they make it. Society is not to blame; their circumstances are not to blame; nothing extrinsic is to blame — they are.

I could wax on about how bad things are going to be, or how we oughta this, and we oughta that. Yes, yes, I agree, academically.
But in reality, we aren’t going to do a damned thing, and that’s the best outcome we may realistically hope for. I’ve said since the first term of the Obama administration that we are no longer capable of doing things, because we are always just one election away from internal Marxist sabotage at the top. And now that the deep state shenanigans are plain for all to see, they are emboldened, rather than cowed by the sunlight.

Ten years ago, if you had asked the general population, what the difference was between gender-fluid, gender non-conforming, transgender and transsexual, few could have told you. Today, our primary school children can not only answer that question but may find themselves, with or without their and their parents’ knowledge, in class with a “trans kid”. Such is the all pervasive influence of the campaigners who have shaped the teaching on this in our schools.

Public schools have broken a sacred trust. Parents have both the right and responsibility to care for, teach and train their children. When they send them to a public school (or a private one, for that matter) they are allowing that school to teach those children on their behalf. It is a sacred trust. The parent is trusting the school to provide education for the children on behalf of the parent whose job and right it is to bring up their children as they see fit.
It is not up to the educator to decide what kind of person they would like to produce. It is not up to the educator to instill values in their children that are contrary to the wishes of the parents. It is not up to the educator to make the children do something the parent does not want them to do. For educators to do this, as it is being done today, is to break a sacred trust.
People who send their children to ‘Christian’ schools have know this, and acted on that knowledge, for half a century. The Pandemic Panic has brought reality home to those who thought that living in a Ritzy Suburb meant that the local public schools were as safe for People Like Us as private schools would be.

At least one person was killed and another five were wounded in a shooting during a protest in Portland over police violence. According to preliminary reports from the scene, the shooting took place Saturday night at Normandale Park in the Oregonian city following a “confrontation” between a protester and a nearby homeowner, both of whom were reportedly armed.
Oddly enough, the police apparently didn’t shoot anybody.
The number of homicides in Portland last year surpassed the number in more populous cities such as San Francisco and Boston, and was more than double the number of slayings in nearby Seattle, which has a population of nearly 200K more people.
Doesn’t sound to me as if ‘police violence’ is the problem.

A band of Native American activists and eco-extremists left a crew of pipeline workers deeply shaken – while causing millions of dollars in damage – at a Coastal GasLink pipeline work site, according to a news report in the Vancouver Sun.
Security at the site called for help after a band of about 20 people, some wielding axes and other weapons, broke through a fence protecting the site. At one point, the attackers allegedly tried to light one of the vehicles on fire…while a crew of workers was inside.

A mom of four children in Prince William County, Virginia, says security guards blocked parents from entering Wednesday’s school board meeting and physically removed another mother from even entering the building.
Merianne Jensen, whose Feb. 2 speech to the school board against mask mandates went viral, arrived an hour early to attend Wednesday’s meeting. But she and other parents were blocked from entering the meeting room and instructed to sit in a foyer.
“They didn’t want to hear our voice,” Jensen told The Daily Signal after leaving the meeting Wednesday night.
It was there that Jensen saw another mother being forcibly removed by school security guards. She posted the video on Twitter, where it received tens of thousands of views.

Binyamin Appelbaum, the lead writer on economics and business for the New York Times editorial board, is by all accounts a union man. In his recent essay on “The Power in Numbers”, he concluded with a rousing demand: the Government must “protect the rights of Americans and ensure every worker is free to seek strength in numbers”.
On paper, his piece had all the hallmarks of an inspiring call to arms: it was illustrated with a photo gallery of smiling workers; it took a swipe at Amazon and Starbucks; it celebrated how the “movement retains pockets of strength”. It was inspiring, that is, until we remind ourselves that the NYT is one of the most the aggressively anti-union newspapers in the media — an attitude that trickles all the way down from the dynasty that still controls the paper to this day.

I wrote here about what I called “a Princeton-Morgan Stanley joint venture in discrimination.” My reference was to Morgan Stanley’s Freshman Enhancement Program, which is available only to Blacks, Hispanics, Native Americans, and/or LGBTQ college freshmen. All other freshmen need not apply. Princeton participates in the program.
Today, former White House Counsel Boyden Gray sent a letter on behalf of the Project on Fair Representation to Morgan Stanley and Princeton University. It warns them that the Freshman Enhancement Program is illegal. The Project on Fair Representation is led by Edward Blum who also leads Students for Fair Admissions, the plaintiff in the discrimination suit by Asian-Americans against Harvard.
Gray’s letter is here. It states that “while the program proclaims to serve laudable goals. . .the use of race, ethnicity, and sexual orientation discrimination to advance these goals is blatantly illegal and immoral.”
As it undoubtedly is.

A lawyer for French teacher Peter Vlaming asked Tuesday that the Virginia Supreme Court take up the case, Vlaming v. West Point School Board.
“No government can force any Virginian to express messages that violate their core beliefs,” Chris Schandevel told The Daily Signal after arguing for Vlaming before Virginia’s highest court.
Schandevel, a lawyer with the Christian legal organization Alliance Defending Freedom, asked the court “to reinstate the lawsuit that [Vlaming] filed in state trial court,” which dismissed the case without explanation last August.
As previously reported by The Daily Signal, the West Point School Board fired Vlaming in December 2018 after he declined to use male pronouns to refer to a female student who identified as a transgender male.

Many people have noted the similarities, as far as practical application, between 20th century fascism and modern managerialism. The starting place for the comparison is the marriage of corporate power and state power. Instead of harnessing the two in the name of socialism and nationalism, the two sides exist within the managerial state in the furtherance of technological and financial capitalism. The system is also decorated with the language of Western liberalism.

“This is about keeping Canadians safe, protecting people’s jobs,” Mr Trudeau told a news conference on Monday.
He said the police would be given “more tools” to imprison or fine protesters and protect critical infrastructure.
Mr Trudeau told reporters the legislation would be applied temporarily and in a highly specific manner.
Critics have noted that the prime minister voiced support for farmers in India who blocked major highways to New Delhi for a year in 2021, saying at the time: “Canada will always be there to defend the right of peaceful protest.”
Mr Trudeau’s invoking of the Emergencies Act comes as demonstrations across Canada enter their third week.

Imagine you were planning a conspiracy to limit the number of doctors in America. Certainly, you’d make sure to have a costly, lengthy credentialing system. You would also tell politicians that America has too many doctors already. That way, you could purposefully constrain the number of medical-school students. You might freeze or slash funding for residencies and medical scholarships. You’d fight proposals to allow nurses to do the work of physicians. And because none of this would stop foreign-trained doctors from slipping into the country and committing the crime of helping sick people get better, you’d throw in some rules that made it onerous for immigrant doctors, especially from neighboring countries Mexico and Canada, to do their job.
Okay, I think you’ve caught on by this point. America has already done all of this.

Rebecca Brannon describes herself as an independent photojournalist covering Minnesota politics, protests, and riots. Rebecca has the nerve to do much of her reporting from the inside. If I have the chronology right, Rebecca got inside the “two hour black bloc Antifa protest” on Lake Street in Minneapolis, and the perpetrators are not happy about it. They don’t really want the exposure.
Say this for the Star Tribune. The paper’s nonfeasance is appreciated. Indeed, the Star Tribune’s nonfeasance is a critical component of the bizarre hellworld that Minneapolis has become.

“It really has required a lot of soul-searching, a lot of reading of the literature to try to think of what were plausible reasons that might account for this.”
And by “this,” she means the outcome of a study that lasted more than a decade. It included 2,990 low-income children in Tennessee who applied to free, public prekindergarten programs. Some were admitted by lottery, and the others were rejected, creating the closest thing you can get in the real world to a randomized, controlled trial — the gold standard in showing causality in science.
Farran and her co-authors at Vanderbilt University followed both groups of children all the way through sixth grade. At the end of their first year, the kids who went to pre-K scored higher on school readiness — as expected.
But after third grade, they were doing worse than the control group. And at the end of sixth grade, they were doing even worse. They had lower test scores, were more likely to be in special education, and were more likely to get into trouble in school, including serious trouble like suspensions.

There are many reasons why an industry can become concentrated within a narrow geographic region. Externally generated increasing returns to scale i.e. a firm becomes more productive simply by being near other firms producing the same thing, is an observation that goes all the way back to Alfred Marshall. That’s the story of Hollywood and Silicon Valley, not to mention a million other micro-industries. The story of journalism, however, is different, because it is not the capital or labor market opportunities, but specifically the labor itself that is concentrated in a narrow location. The “Writer living in Brooklyn” Twitter/LinkedIn/Muckrack bio is a cliche at this point for a reason. But why are they all in Brooklyn? And why do I get the sense that I can summarize at least half of them as White children of the upper-middle class who paid full-freight for an English-adjacent degree from an expensive liberal arts college?
