Judging fairly how well states are doing at educating their children

15th November 2007

Steve Sailer tries to sort the grain from the chaff. It isn’t easy.

The facts are obvious, boring, and depressing, so people make up silliness to have something to say.

Don’t they always.

Iranian Policy Questioned at Alexandria Town Meeting

14th November 2007

Read it. “Iranian Policy” of course doesn’t mean “the policy followed by Iranians” but rather “American policy toward Iran”. Foreigners don’t have “policy”, you know; that’s George W Bush, and It’s All Bad.

Markets in Everything: Cheat Offsetting

8th November 2007

Read it. The comedian George Carlin once famously said, “If you nail together two things that have never been nailed together before, some schmuck will buy it.” Apparently this works for concepts as well.

Usually this sort of flim-flammery is thought of as being distinctly American, but the fact that this is a British firm demonstrates that the roots go far deeper.

Why is science no longer interesting to Westerners?

7th November 2007

Read it. Perhaps because whining to the government pays better? That’s just a guess, you understand.

President Bush’s official science adviser is a Democrat, which shows the current administration’s level of interest in science.

Boy, doesn’t that say it all.

Define ‘Baptist,’ give three examples

4th November 2007

Read it. Be your own Protestant church. Any number can play.

People in America forget (if they ever knew) that Christianity isn’t just a religion — it’s a church, an organized community with a hierarchy of authority and defined criteria for membership, just like the Boy Scouts or the Marine Corps.

This is why I always have to laugh at the “evangelicals” who bitch and moan about Mormons not being “real Christians”.

Guys, from the standpoint of the Church that was founded by the Apostles, you aren’t “real Christians” either.

BOURNE TO RUN, AND RUN, AND RUN

3rd November 2007

Mark Steyn on the latest Bourne flick. My reaction to the film, which I really enjoyed, was to pray to God that our CIA was even half as effective as what we see on film. (He said No.)

Are Holy Communion rules legal?

2nd November 2007

Read it. I can’t imagine getting worked up about this, but apparently other people do. Sort of like forcing yourself into a club that won’t have you; sort of destroys the whole notion of “club”, doesn’t it. Of course, that’s usually the point, a dog-in-the-manger attitude that underlines the eternal truth that misery not only loves company, it will move heaven and earth to get it.

For that matter, if ACT UP attacks the sacramental elements of the Mass, is that a hate crime of some kind?

Yeah, but the penalty is enforced by somebody with a lot broader jurisdiction than the Feds.

Liberal or Progressive, Same Old Nonsense

Remember How TJX Was The Worst Data Breach In History? Well, It Was Actually Worse

30th October 2007

Read it. It would appear that the only sure way to avoid identity theft is never to give your personal information to anybody — and that includes the government.

Of course, that means you have to pay cash for everything. And that won’t get you an iPhone.

I’m not a big fan of punitive damages in lawsuits against corporations, since that only hurts the stockholders rather than the actual culprits. However, I’d be up for some cruel and unusual punishment on corporate managers that breach their fiduciary duties.

Oops! Cold Spring starts to realize they just kicked to the curb their top fundraiser

26th October 2007

Steve Sailer delights in pointing out inconvenient truths — and, unlike AlGore, he’s right.

Considering the lame-brained ingratitude involved, if I were Watson I’d make the rounds of the donors I’d previously contacted and urge them not to give to Cold Spring.

The Leopard’s Spot (On)

26th October 2007

Jeremy Wagstaff has some comments on the new Apple operating system; Vista is looking even more lame, if possible.

Leopard looks hot, and makes Vista look impoverished and, I suspect, somewhat irrelevant, like someone trying to sell aluminum siding to people who realise that while people still have it on their houses, no one really wants it anymore. Apple see what people want and give it to them.

And that about says it all.

Immigration Raids Cut Illegal Alien Use On American Farms

26th October 2007

Read it. I guess enforcement works.

The farmers enjoy big subsidies on their crops. Plus, they get ethanol subsidies. On top of all this, their illegal alien workers cost us far more (e.g. in education and health care for them and their kids) than they pay those workers in salaries. Enough already.

What he said.

The League of Extremely Rich Donors for Free Speech
