Black Flight to the Suburbs on the Rise

1st August 2015

Read it.

Thirteen of the 20 cities with largest black populations (including nine of the 10 largest) registered declines in their black populations from 2000 to 2010. Among central cities of the 100 largest metropolitan areas 33 experienced declines in their black populations, and 68 showed either first-time losses, larger losses, or smaller gains among blacks than in the 1990s. Clearly, the black urban presence, which has been the mainstay of many large cities, is diminishing.

Three cities with the largest black declines—Detroit, Chicago, and New York—were among the primary destinations for blacks during the Great Migration out of the South in the first part of the 20th century. However, black losses were not confined to northern cities. Southern and Western cities such as Atlanta, Dallas, and Los Angeles were also among those losing blacks in 2000-2010.

Private Schools Saving the Day in the Third World

31st July 2015

It turns out, inefficient public education isn’t just an American or even a Western problem. Across the world, public schools are failing kids, yet there’s some good news to be had: private schools are on the rise, even in the poorest of countries.

Conspiracy or Code of Conduct?

30th July 2015

John C. Wright sums it up.

One of the arguments against the Anthropogenic Global Falsehood Theory is that so many scientists cannot be cooperating in maintaining a falsehood because such a conspiracy could not be maintained secretly.

I propose a simple rebuttal: the thing is not a conspiracy. It is a code of conduct that springs out of the worldview called Political Correctness.

When a large group of people take it as a maxim of their code of conduct that believing what is politically useful rather than what is true, it is not a secret that they do not believe nor say the truth. This is not a conspiracy except in the sense that Taoism or Monarchism is a conspiracy.

It is a shared worldview. Political Correctness differs from other shared worldviews in that it is, at its core, at its root, utterly dishonest. Political Correctness is the attempt to think whatever is approved thought, and not to think the truth. Whether it counts as lying when you yourself pretend you believe the lie with all your might is an interesting question for a psychopathologist. From a practical point of view, it is a lie.

So if everyone in the worldview lies, and lies in the same way about the same topics, this is not a conspiracy. It is not secret. Everyone outside the cult (who cares to look) knows political correctness is a lie.

It is a lie about … everything.

Pathway to Codswallop

30th July 2015

Steyn on illegal immigration.

Every sentient Republican voter knows that “comprehensive immigration reform” is Beltway-speak for legalizing 30 million law-breakers while incentivizing 30 million more.

On their public statements, it is difficult to know what these guys really believe on immigration from one week to the next. Which in itself is rather strange: after all, among what Hillary Clinton calls “everyday Americans”, most people who want an end to illegal immigration have held that view consistently for some time; they were not, a year ago, gung ho for amnesty, in-state tuition discounts, no-questions-asked drivers’ licenses, pathways to citizenship, and another 30 million unskilled Latin-American peasants to start the comprehensive tango anew. But half their presidential candidates were. Odd. Yet, if you had to plump for one side or the other, if you had to toss a coin, wouldn’t the safer bet be that, with all the above, it’s their amnesty phase (which oddly enough tends to occur in the presidential off-season) that represents their genuine position?

Gideon’s Servants and the Criminalization of Poverty

29th July 2015

Read it.

In ways that slip beneath the doctrinal radar, public defenders often behave like social workers. They find drug treatment and jobs for their clients, and intervene with landlords and employers. Conversely — and ironically — many civil welfare service providers act increasingly like law enforcement officials. Teachers call the police on their students, while welfare case workers often refer their clients for prosecution. This role-switching — by criminal lawyers and civil servants alike — is a function of the tight connection between criminalization and poverty: poor people tend to get swept up in the criminal system and such encounters tend to make people poor. This nexus is particularly powerful in the world of minor offenses and urban policing in which crime, unemployment, racial segregation, and lack of social infrastructure swirl around in one large, nearly inextricable mass. As a result, criminal justice actors are heavily preoccupied with defendants’ social welfare even as the welfare state routinely treats its clients as presumptive criminals. These hydraulic forces affect every official actor — from police officers to prosecutors to emergency room nurses and public school teachers. But public defenders play a special role. Their multi-faceted service commitments to both criminal and welfarist outcomes reveal deep features of the criminal system itself and its conflicted governance relationship to its most vulnerable constituents.

Gang of Calais Migrants ‘Reached Britain Through Channel Tunnel’

29th July 2015

Read it.

A GROUP of Calais migrants reached Britain by storming the French port and sneaking through the Channel Tunnel during this week’s incursions, the Home Secretary has revealed.

Guess the Channel Tunnel is not looking like such a great idea.

Speaking after a meeting of the emergency Cobra committee, Theresa May said an undisclosed number of migrants had stormed the French port before illegally entering the UK through the 30 mile tunnel.

You would think that there would be some responsibility on the part of the French government to make sure that this sort of thing doesn’t happen, but apparently not.

Man Dressed as Woman Sexually Assaults Man at City College

29th July 2015

A man dressed in a crop top, miniskirt and blonde wig sexually assaulted another man on the campus of San Diego City College over the weekend, officials told NBC 7 Monday.

According to the college police’s account, the suspect was bold. They say he came onto campus at about 7:15 Sunday morning and attacked a man on the patio in front of the administration building, forcing the victim to perform a sex act. The location is roughly the center of campus.

Saw that coming.

Parents Should Be Banned From Smacking Children, UN Tells Britain

24th July 2015

Read it.

In a wide-ranging report, the UN Human Rights Committee called for Britain to implement a number of measures in order to comply with international treaties, including the holding of independent investigations into murders and other human rights abuses during Northern Ireland’s Troubles and improvements to the way human rights abuses by the Armed Forces overseas are dealt with.

It also said the age of criminal responsibility – which is 10 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and eight in Scotland although children there can only be prosecuted when they reach 12 – was “not in accordance with international standards” and should be raised.

Who hires these people? And why?

In Texas, an Illegal Immigrant Crime Wave

23rd July 2015

Read it.

Christian Adams reports that an internal report by the Texas Department of Public Safety, obtained by PJ Media, finds that illegal immigrants have committed hundreds of thousands of crimes, including nearly 3,000 homicides, in Texas. According to the Department of Public Safety’s analysis, foreign aliens committed 611,234 unique crimes in Texas from 2008 to 2014, including thousands of homicides and sexual assaults.

My, what a surprise! Aren’t you surprised? I’m sure surprised.

They’re already criminals just by coming here. They’ve already proved that they’re willing to break the law if they get some advantage by it. Why is it news that they break other laws when they get here?

Talking About Illegals With Our Politicians

23rd July 2015

Read it.

In 2013 U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement let 36,000 illegal aliens out of its custody. Of the 87,000 criminal convictions committed by the aliens, 15,635 were for drunk driving. These are offenses that the U.S. government doesn’t consider “serious crimes.”

Most of these crimes take place in sanctuary cities—that is, cities where the local government has given up enforcing the law. These sanctuary cities look like Latin America: a white upper class nominally in control while a brown, dumbed underclass services them while running on slave labor.

Murder Incorporated Denies Wrongdoing

23rd July 2015

Read it.

On the radio, one of the top-of-the-hour news blurbs was that Planned Parenthood dismissed all allegations from an unnamed video as being fraudulent, an attempt to scare women and hinder their reproductive rights.

Nothing more was said. That was given as straight news, as if it were a newsworthy item. There was no context, no explanation, and the other side of the story was simply “pretended”out of existence.

The unnamed video, of course was the one where a top officer for Planned Parenthood (as Murder Incorporated is called on the cubicular bizzaro world, where all things are backward) was dickering for money over how much for each organ harvested from late term abortions. She described how the forceps would grasp the dismembered baby body in the proper spot, so as to not damage the expensive kidneys, lungs, or other juicy bits that bring a fine price on the medical meat market.

Feminism as Totalitarian Ideology

23rd July 2015

The Other McCain continues his trip through the swamp.

Feminist gender theory, explained by Professor Salih in her synopsis of Professor Butler’s influential 1990 book, Gender Theory: Feminism and the Subversion of Identity, is totalitarian in two senses of the word. First, it is a political invention, a belief system that claims to define reality in order to advance the claims of a group to exercise complete power. Second, feminism is a totalitarian movement in that its adherents employ methods of terroristic intimidation to silence those who dissent from feminist ideology. This is most evident in academia. On those rare occasions when any critic of feminism appears on a university campus, they are met by angry mobs of feminist protesters.

So Many Stupid Kids Are Going to College, Marine Officers Are Actually Getting Dumber

22nd July 2015

Read it.

A new study indicates that Marine Corps officers’ intelligence has consistently declined over a 35-year period, and researchers are placing the blame on the “democratization of college,” that is, an ever-expanding pool of college graduates.

Brookings Institution researchers Matthew F. Cancian and Michael W. Klein looked at General Classification Test (GCT) scores from 1980 to 2014, finding a steady decline, which is troubling since the GCT predicts success in the military.

Officer scores dropped by 8.8 points, moving from an average of 130.9 in 1980 to 122.1 in 2014.

Not good news.

This Year’s Model

22nd July 2015

Read it.

Certification as the liberals’ official angry black man is a lucrative gig. The market is upscale, but the job is only temporary. Fashions change, or rather remain subject to a cycle. The job isn’t easy; it requires high attainment in the art of performance. Black rage must be precisely matched to liberal guilt.

James Baldwin provides the original model, in the essays originally published in the New Yorker and then collected in The Fire Next Time. Baldwin was a deeply literary man working at an elevated height, but the descent from Baldwin was steep. The sixties and early seventies served up new models on an almost annual basis. Before long we had Stokely Carmichael, Eldridge Cleaver, and, lest we forget, George Jackson.

Migrant Crisis Chaos: Two Injured After Falling Off Lorry and 10 Others on the Run in UK

22nd July 2015

Read it.

TWO illegal immigrants have been seriously injured after falling from a lorry and another 10 are on the run in the English countryside as Britain’s migrant crisis continues to spiral out of control.

The pair are thought to have climbed under a lorry at Calais, clinging on for a further 60 miles after reaching Dover before succumbing to tiredness and tumbling onto the motorway.

Welcome to the wonderful world of illegal immigration. Be thankful that you only have a hundred miles of ocean to watch, rather than a thousand miles of desert.

There are almost 4,000 migrants, mostly from Africa, living in squalid camps in and around Calais waiting for their chance to make the crossing to Britain.

And what are the French doing about that? Why, nothing. It’s what the French do best. God forbid that they should send them back where they came from.

Attracted by a generous benefits system and an abundance of black market work, many are going to increasingly dangerous lengths in an attempt to enter the country.

My, that certainly sounds familiar.

Hackers ‘Remotely Carjack’ Jeep From 10 Miles Away and Drive It Into Ditch

22nd July 2015

Read it.

Hackers have remotely carjacked a Jeep, took control of it and crash it into a ditch.

Two men used a laptop and a mobile phone to seize control of the Cherokee model as it drove at 70mph along the motorway – and turned off its engine, slammed on the brakes and ramped its wind-screen wipers to maximum speed.

They were also able to take over its steering – albeit only when it was in reverse – its brakes and its locks.

This is one of the reasons why I don’t drive an American-brand car. There’s more to Detroit being a disaster area than just a penchant for electing black Democrats.

As Beijing Becomes a Supercity, the Rapid Growth Brings Pains

20th July 2015

Read it.

For decades, China’s government has tried to limit the size of Beijing, the capital, through draconian residency permits. Now, the government has embarked on an ambitious plan to make Beijing the center of a new supercity of 130 million people.

Guess they bought the regressive ‘density’ argument. Always knew that was a Commie plot.

The planned megalopolis, a metropolitan area that would be about six times the size of New York’s, is meant to revamp northern China’s economy and become a laboratory for modern urban growth.

The technical term for that is ‘behavioral sink’.

“The supercity is the vanguard of economic reform,” said Liu Gang, a professor at Nankai University in Tianjin who advises local governments on regional development. “It reflects the senior leadership’s views on the need for integration, innovation and environmental protection.”

In other words, if they’re all in one place, they’re easier to control.

But the new supercity is intended to be different in scope and conception. It would be spread over 82,000 square miles, about the size of Kansas, and hold a population larger than a third of the United States. And unlike metro areas that have grown up organically, Jing-Jin-Ji would be a very deliberate creation. Its centerpiece: a huge expansion of high-speed rail to bring the major cities within an hour’s commute of each other.

I want to know where they’re going to get the water. And where they’re going to put the sewage.

But some of the new roads and rails are years from completion. For many people, the creation of the supercity so far has meant ever-longer commutes on gridlocked highways to the capital.

Ah, yes, reality is what happens while you’re making plans….

Senselessness and Sensibility

19th July 2015

Mark Steyn speaks truth to power.

A fifth victim of the Chattanooga jihad boy has died: Petty Officer Randall Smith, US Navy.

I’m afraid the makeshift memorials of flags and other patriotic memorabilia that have sprung up on the edge of the police tape depress the hell out of me. A no doubt sincere veneration for the military apparently can only express itself with a feeble passivity that is a large part of the problem. This isn’t a time for the bumper-sticker bromides of “We salute our heroes/Thank you for your service/We support our troops”. Among the dead are men who waged a bloody and hard-fought battle to retake Fallujah …only to come home and die unarmed in a crappy shopping mall at the hands of a halfwit fanatic whose family had been under the leisurely money-no-object scrutiny of the bloated security apparatus for years.

A Chinese-made teddy bear from Wal-Mart is not an appropriate reaction. Righteous anger is. And there’s not a lot of evidence of that. At that parking-lot memorial, the public seems to discern that such anger is no longer an approved sensibility – whereas a teary generalized sadness gets plenty of media coverage. This is the same media, by the way, that, after a couple of perfunctory questions about Chattanooga, asked Josh Earnest for more details about the “father-daughter weekend” President Obama is currently enjoying in New York. Golly, you’d almost get the impression they’re really not that sad at all.

Screw the cakes and balloons. We who did not know them cannot mourn them: That is for their friends and family. The nation’s duty is to avenge them – so that they did not die in vain.

Let’s Face It, Planned Parenthood Is Evil

15th July 2015

Read it.

In America, it’s illegal to donate money to a candidate without first reporting it to the government. Even then, if you give more than is permissible you might end up in jail.  In this country, you can’t add trans fats to your foods or smoke cigarettes in your own bar. Here, Little Sisters of the Poor can’t tell the state they’d rather not buy condoms and bakers can’t tell a couple they’d rather not participate in their wedding.

But it’s completely legal to kill an unborn baby for convenience and then sell its parts for cash.

Quite frankly, I don’t see a lot of parenthood in their plan. Perhaps they ought to be sued for false advertising.

At a Loss for Words

15th July 2015

Matt Gibson says what I’ve been thinking.

It’s official—words no longer have meaning.

As a proud member of society’s educated, progressive elite, I’m thrilled. Since Bill Clinton famously disputed the definition of the singular third-person present form of the verb “to be,” many of us have looked forward to a time when all words would be rendered completely meaningless. Thanks to Chief Justice John Roberts and his recent King v. Burwell ruling, that dream has finally been realized.

See, for too long we have allowed “words” and their “meanings” to obstruct us on our quest for social justice. The long, slow march to the Utopia of American Socialism will never end if we have to rely on “words.” There are simply too many of them and they all mean different things. That’s why this decision is so powerful—the “words” are still there, but they no longer “mean” anything beyond what we want them to mean.

“Diversity” and “Inclusion” Litmus Tests for Tenure

13th July 2015

Read it.

Colleges generally weigh teaching and research as more important, but “service” can play a significant role.

These are areas that universities should rightly take into consideration when weighing whether to make a person more centrally part of its core faculty. What is outside the realm of relevant criteria, however, are ideological litmus tests, which violate academic freedom and freedom of conscience. “Service” can’t be used to favor Democrats over Republicans (or vice versa); omnivores over vegetarians; pacifists over NRA members; or proponents of a gold standard over stalwarts of the Federal Reserve. The list of possible litmus tests is inexhaustible. But the list of actual litmus tests currently used by universities is pretty short.

There is now one in place at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech). The test is for “diversity” and its close companion “inclusion,” both of which take up significant real estate in the university’s newly updated 2015-2016 promotion and tenure dossier guidelines.

“I Feel Like”: This Has to Stop

11th July 2015

This phrase is almost never used to describe one’s feelings. It is almost exclusively used to describe an opinion. “I feel like that would look better in blue.” “I feel like the Republicans hate poor people.” “I feel like we should have a media strategy instead of a product strategy.” It is used when there is the slightest hint of disagreement, or any opinion is expressed that the speaker is uncertain about. In either case, it is used as a verbal softening: a way to have an opinion without having an opinion. “I’m not saying you’re wrong, I just feel like you’re wrong.” You can question my idea, but you can’t question my feelings.

Sanders calls himself a “democratic socialist,” not to be confused with New York City mayor Bill de Blasio’s preferred label, “social democrat,” but both believe that more power and wealth in the hands of government (and less in the hands of free people and the free market) is a good thing. America’s First High-Speed Rail Project

7th July 2015

Read it.

Despite continued evidence that high-speed rail is a waste of money, reporters still write articles lamenting that high-speed trains in America are “elusive.” It’s elusive for a simple reason: it makes no sense, being slower than flying, less convenient than driving, and far more expensive than both.

The problem with trains is that they take you and people you don’t know from where you aren’t to where you don’t want to be at a time that is inconvenient to you. This naturally recommends itself highly to Democrites and other statists.

What’s changed between 1906 and today? Today we have trains that can go roughly twice as fast as the train Miller proposed, but we also have planes that go at least five times as fast. We also have automobiles that can take you anywhere you want in an urban area, while the trains can only serve a few points because every stop reduces the average speed and makes the train less viable.

What hasn’t changed is the cost. After adjusting for inflation, building high-speed rail lines across mountains, such as the coastal mountains between San Francisco and Los Angeles and California’s Central Valley, is still extremely expensive. Even in the relatively flat area between Tokyo and Osaka, proposals for a high-speed maglev project call for 80 percent of the route to be in tunnels. Why spend all that money when we have planes that can fly over the hills at twice the speed of the trains?

Because the regressives want to cancel the 20th century, and getting rid of planes and automobiles (except for the Crust, of course) is a big part of that.

Security inside the undersea link was once more brought into question as traffic was disruption as some 150 mainly young men tried to get on board UK-bound freight trains just after 10.30pm local time.

“From 10:30pm, around 150 migrants attempted to enter the platforms,” a Calais spokesman said.

Police confirmed: “Riot officers had to intervene to restore orde. Services were disrupted until the very early hours. There are attempts to get into the Tunnel pretty much every night, but this was one of the worse,” the spokesman added.

A Eurotunnel spokesman added that it “suffers from attempted intrusions every night”.

Richard Fernandez looks at the oddities of modern politics.

A picture doing the rounds of Facebook  shows a picture of Supreme Court justice Clarence Thomas and actor George Takei, who called Thomas “a clown in blackface” for dissenting with the majority decision on gay marriage.  The caption says: “Thomas votes for the party that freed his ancestors.  Takei votes for the party that put him, personally, in an internment camp.”  The irony comes from the fact that there is often something more powerful than experience.  That impulse is the need to belong.  Intern me, only let me belong.

Powerful social movements do not promote diversity, except superficially.  What they sell is membership in a group.  That is the core product of religions, clubs, political parties — and until recently, nations.  The left is no different.  It doesn’t want its members to think independently but follow the party line, to parrot the narrative. The party line must be served, no matter when, no matter what.

Just a few hours ago an illegal immigrant gunned down a young female tourist on Embarcadero wharf.  ”The man … was in a Bay Area jail less than four months ago and should have been turned over to federal immigration officials upon his release, instead of being set free, according to the Department of Homeland Security.”  But Bay Area authorities couldn’t turn him over they explained, because it would have run counter to the prevailing political narrative.

What matters is not what you do, but who sent you.  Governors that round up illegal immigrants are accused of infringing on the federal government’s prerogative to control the borders.  But not so officials  who let illegal immigrant killers stick around to murder following “city policy”. Anyone who maintains that Obamacare is a failure will be accused of criminal right wing delusions, unless of course you’re Bernie Sanders and want to replace a failing Affordable Care Act with Single payer.  Then it’s okay. The different lies not in the act, but in the actor.

… and Then They Came for Amy Schumer …

A friend points out that some Social Media Justice Warriors are starting to get a sense that they could turn this type of thing into an institutionalized shakedown system like Jesse Jackson perfected back in the 1970s:

What’s becoming clear is that, besides pulling big numbers for yourself as a freelancer if YOUR opinion piece is the one that gets the avalanche started on an entertainer or writer, what the SJWs want is for Hollywood to share their money with them by hiring SJWs as consultants. In exchange for money and the gesture of deference, they will guide the writers and entertainers away from the arbitrary, and constantly changing, landmines.

Nice movie you got here. It would be a shame if anything bad happened to it.

Keep in mind that Rev. Jesse is both a problem to Corporate America and The Solution: he’ll provide your Fortune 500 behemoth with racial benediction if you, say, hire companies who donate to his operations to run your cafeteria (badly) and the like.

That helps explain the long tenure of Jackson and Sharpton at the top of the seemingly greasy pole of black grievance-mongering. Jesse understands how the game is played and is in it for the long haul.
