The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) discovered the largest continuous natural gas deposit in the country, stretching across the Gulf Coast states of Texas and Louisiana.

USGS estimates between 4 billion barrels of oil and 304.4 trillion cubic feet of natural gas sit untapped in the Haynesville and Bossier shale formations. More natural gas was found in these two formations than any other continuous assessment the USGS has ever conducted.

California, by contrast, as discovered the largest continuous Sanctuary City deposit in the country.

Race wars never go away for the left because they allow liberals to separate us into victim classes. If people don’t consider themselves victims, they don’t vote for the left. Expect to hear a lot about this as Nextflix just dropped the trailer for its stupid show, Dear White People yesterday.

What became clear to me in this exchange is that the passive voice is itself unsuited for the lexical landscape of United’s email, which itself is part of a larger world we now find ourselves in, where corporate and government bureaucracies rely heavily on language to shape our perception. Munoz’s email relies heavily on the passive voice to evade culpability, but he also employs a host of other rhetorical moves that collude to put the blame on the man who was assaulted and carried out on a stretcher. Like a well-trained bureaucrat, Munoz used an array of syntactical choices in a predictable, quantifiable, and deliberate manner, and it’s time we recognize it for what it is.

Cue mandatory derogatory references to the Left’s boogeymen Nigel Farage and Donald Trump.

As I’ve written elsewhere, the thrust of these style guides falls back to a weird kind of masculine virility. The terms themselves—“passive” and “active”—rely heavily on received tropes of gendered norms, and for that reason alone we should be suspicious of them.

Just lookin’ for phobes, man, just lookin’ for phobes.

The term “officer-involved shooting” is a perfect example of bureaucratic speech: It invariably is paired with an active verb (“an officer-involved shooting occurred”) and yet the entire purpose of the construction is to imbue the scene with passivity. Police did not kill anyone; a shooting just occurred and it happened to involve officers. There is no actor in an officer-involved shooting, and not even any real actions. We don’t even technically know who was shot, only that an officer was somehow involved. An entire syntactical arrangement consisting of a subject (“police”), a verb (“shot”), and an object (“a civilian”) are transmuted into a noun (“shooting”) with a compound adjective (“officer-involved”) attached. It’s almost as if nothing took place at all.

This is even more obvious in the Politically Correct phrase used for partial-birth abortion: ‘intact dilation and extraction’, which could be something involving a car crash and the Jaws of Life.

Protests broke out at the International Affairs Symposium at Portland’s Lewis & Clark College Tuesday when radicals outside, frustrated at being stymied, started pounding on the door of a debate on immigration, as if trying to break in. But the true hero of the event was a black Muslim student from Sudan, a country included in Trump’s travel ban, who heroically grabbed the bullhorn from one of the screaming yahoos and lambasted them for disrupting the event.

He told them that because of them, the event ended abruptly, robbing him of an opportunity to ask his question. He pointed out that if they want change and reform, they are going about it the wrong way if they won’t even let people talk—showing that, ironically, a foreigner, has a better grasp of free speech, tolerance, pluralism, and open dialogue than the protesters speaking on his behalf.

Gunnery Sgt. Joseph Felix faces charges of cruelty and maltreatment, drunk and disorderly conduct, failure to obey a lawful general order and obstruction of justice, TECOM announced Wednesday in a news release. This comes more than a year after the March 18, 2016, death of Raheel Siddiqui, 20, of the 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, who was killed at Parris Island after falling nearly 40 feet down a stairwell.

Felix was one of Siddiqui’s drill instructors. Prior to Siddiqui’s death, Felix had been accused of making another Muslim recruit exercise in the shower and then ordering the recruit to sit in a commercial dryer, an investigation found. Felix is accused of turning the dryer on several times while taunting the recruit about his religion, such as asking if he took part in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

This is intolerable.

Far be it from me to prejudge a judicial matter, but if he’s found guilty, I hope they hang him.

“The Patriotic Millionaires, who I am a group of, and Responsible Wealth members, we are all feeling like we could pay more taxes” LaMagna said on in an interview March 31.

Varney repeatedly asked the millionaire CEO why he doesn’t act on his feelings. “Why don’t you pay more in taxes? You could just write a check. Why don’t you?” LaMagna excused his inaction by saying “it would be like me putting a drop in the ocean.”

“No,” Varney exclaimed “it’s putting your money where your mouth is.”

Which, of course, they refuse to do, because it’s all a big lie, as I have explained many times in these posts.

Frustrated, Varney argued that men like LaMagna, who have accrued wealth over time can actually avoid paying income tax. However, wage earners would be subject to these higher taxes. “I just think it is outrageous that wealthy people should tell strivers, people who make money in income, that we pay more tax but you won’t do it. That’s outrageous.”

LaMagna insisted that he only is referring to people earning more than $1 million a year. But, Varney again blasted him for his hypocritical refusal to voluntarily donate his own money to the treasury. “There is nothing stopping you from writing a check to the government if you think that the government can use that money wisely and they need it. Why don’t you do it?”

“It works when the collective does it” LaMagna argued. “That’s the point.”

No, the point is that the forms of taxation that these slimeballs want to increase are not the forms of taxation to which they are liable. The point is to sweet-talk the stupid into raising taxes on themselves that these guys will still be able to avoid.

The tense interview concluded with Varney berating the CEO for his hypocrisy. “You come on this program saying you want me to pay more on taxes, but you won’t voluntarily write a check to the treasury, and you’ve got the wealth and I don’t.”

A clarification, before I continue (since deliberate misconstrual is itself a tactic of the phenomenon in question). By political correctness, I do not mean the term as it has come to be employed on the right—that is, the expectation of adherence to the norms of basic decency, like refraining from derogatory epithets. I mean its older, intramural denotation: the persistent attempt to suppress the expression of unwelcome beliefs and ideas.

So this is how I’ve come to understand the situation. Selective private colleges have become religious schools. The religion in question is not Methodism or Catholicism but an extreme version of the belief system of the liberal elite: the liberal professional, managerial, and creative classes, which provide a large majority of students enrolled at such places and an even larger majority of faculty and administrators who work at them. To attend those institutions is to be socialized, and not infrequently, indoctrinated into that religion.

As the Associated Press explains, the action was brought by three demonstrators –Kashiya Nwanguma, Molly Shah and Henry Brousseau — who were shoved and harangued by Trump supporters after they attempted to disrupt a campaign rally on March 2. The protestors say they were attacked by members of the crowd at Trump’s bidding.

Professor Jordan Peterson of the University of Toronto, who has recently sparked controversy for opposing social justice initiatives, was denied research grant funding, according to his Twitter account.

One of the things I endeavor to remind people of consistently when I am asked to speak to groups around the country is to consider the possibility that we are led by a pack of idiots. This is not out of any animus toward our leadership class, but borne out of experience. I have seen cabinet secretaries who type with two fingers. I have listened as senior staffers with authority over constructing legislation in a particular scientific field engage in debate on whether or not the moon landing was a hoax. I have seen a man charged with revolutionizing incredibly complex government information technology systems who did not know how to use a thumb drive. I have seen the bill from a highly paid consultant, an incredibly expensive bill, for a PowerPoint deck that I had seen him present for another client with different logos. And, more personally, I have been told at many varied points in my career by accomplished people why the thing I wished to build was impossible, why it would be a failure, and why I should instead join company X, Y, or Z, none of which are relevant or in some cases even exist today. This is why we should never forget the possibility that underneath the façade of government and business, which projects authority and success, there are a host of fools who are just along for the ride and got to where they are by dint of internal politics, a nice resume, and good timing.

Astronomers signed an agreement with the Spanish government to build the giant Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) in Spain’s Canary Islands, if it can’t be put on top of a mountain in Hawaii. Protesters repeatedly attempted to block the construction of the telescope and have attempted to stop it with lawsuits.

Native Hawaiians are trying to block the telescope because they consider the mountain sacred. Environmentalists also opposed the project, and their opposition forced the U.S. National Academies of Science to reconsider 15 years of planning to construct TMT on Mauna Kea.

I have an idea: All white people depart Hawaii and leave it to the natives and Barack Obama. They can go back to eating poi and we won’t have to listen to them any more. Eventually the Japanese and Chinese will own the place and raise the tone a great deal, at which point it will be safe for civilized people to return.

When you buy something physical—a toaster, a book, or a printer, for example—you expect to be free to use it as you see fit: to adapt it to suit your needs, fix it when it breaks, re-use it, lend it, sell it, or give it away when you’re done with it. Your freedom to do those things is a necessary aspect of your ownership of those objects. If you can’t do them, because the seller or manufacturer has imposed restrictions or limitations on your use of the product, then you don’t really own them. Traditionally, the law safeguards these freedoms by discouraging sellers from imposing certain conditions or restrictions on the sale of goods and property, and limiting the circumstances in which those restrictions may be imposed by contract.

But some companies are relentless in their quest to circumvent and undermine these protections. They want to control what end users of their products can do with the stuff they ostensibly own, by attaching restrictions and conditions on purchasers, locking down their products, and locking you (along with competitors and researchers) out. If they can do that through patent law, rather than ordinary contract, it would mean they could evade legal limits on contracts, and that any one using a product in violation of those restrictions (whether a consumer or competitor) could face harsh penalties for patent infringement.

Our ‘intellectual property’ laws are insane.
