Many measures of poverty exist. The official poverty line is used as a guide as to who should get federal assistance. The state where the largest share of people fall below that line is Mississippi; California is roughly in the middle. But the official poverty line is the same in every state and takes no account of different living costs or of public assistance. So in 2011 the Census Bureau came up with a Supplemental Poverty Measure (SPM), which most social scientists think a better way of comparing levels of poverty across the country. By this yardstick, 19% of Californians were poor in the three years 2015, 2016 and 2017, the highest rate in the country excluding the special case of Washington, DC. The national average was 14.1%.

Not coincidentally, California and D.C. are both Democrat one-party areas.

Right now the person who is trying most strenuously to seem like not-a-Democrat is Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill. She’s touted an ad saying she’s not “one of those crazy Democrats.” When asked by Bret Baier at Fox News to identify a “crazy Democrat,” McCaskill named a Missouri state senator, Maria Chappelle-Nadal, who happens to be black, as the old saying goes. Chappelle-Nadal is reported to have said that Donald Trump should be assassinated. (But remember: it is Trump’s violent rhetoric that is the problem today. Rinse and repeat. Get on CNN.)

The White House’s Council of Economic Advisers issued a report called “The Opportunity Costs of Socialism” to a scathing reception on social media: “dreck,” said the economist Justin Wolfers, while Paul Krugman referred to it as “amazingly dishonest.”

I’m here to tell you that I have read the entire report, and many of the sources it cites, and most of it is correct.

Tongues were clucked, tuts were tutted, and the culprit turned out to be the church’s liberal staff organist, David Stang. “Stang stated that he wanted to mobilize a movement after being disappointed in and fearful of the outcome of the national election,” said Theodore Adams, a local prosecutor.

After doing some investigative work, it can now be revealed that the Pueblos Sin Frontera (People Without Borders/PSF) — the group that organized a caravan back in April — has a track record of links with the international Quaker movement, historical Democratic Party donors, U.S. government bureaucrats, and perhaps even a senior Mexican diplomat.

One of the Bad Ideas of recent years that bothers me most — because it is both widely believed among the elite and easily demonstrable as wrong — is Richard Florida’s theory of the “Creative Class” … The problem is that this is a reversal of cause and effect. Prosperity attracts artists and intellectuals to a city, but they are not the ones who create the basis of prosperity. Ancient Athens was famed for its architecture and philosophy, but its prosperity was due to the success of the Athenians in commerce and in war. Through the Aegean port of Piraeus, the ancient Athenians developed a vast merchant empire, establishing colonies throughout the region, as far as modern-day Turkey and Italy, and the wealth obtained by trade enabled the Athenians to equip a powerful army and navy. The Athenians were an adventurous, enterprising and warlike people, and it was these qualities that made their city wealthy, thus attracting the artists and philosophers. Richard Florida’s “creative class” theory gets this causation exactly backwards, confusing certain traits of wealthy places (especially tolerance of homosexuality) as the reason those places became wealthy.
